Whats the easiest way to display a message in a GUI (pop up box)

What I want is to display messages (like, OK or ERROR) in the GUI in a pop up box (windows), is there any special java component or do I have to create a dialogbox?
I mean, something similar like the FileChooser.

Take a look at JOptionPane. Here is a link to the Swing tutorial on JOptionPane:

Way too complicated. If you want to change the color or style

  • What's the easiest way to have a message box?

Hey, i'm making this game and i have one frame and i have and one panel inside, and when the user completes the game i want a message box to popup saying "Congratulations, You Won!"
At the moment when the user wins the game, i've just put a "System.out.println("You've Won"); but i want a message box to appear on top of the game. What's the best and simplest way to achieve this?
I tried replacing my "System.out.println("You've Won") with JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null, "You Won!"); and that just caused the whole thing to freeze up.
    Thanks

I did as you suggested and changed the "null" in

JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(this, "You Won!"); to refer to the JPanel which contains the game code. And? Any benefit (unlikely)?
Sorry for my lack of explanation about freezing up, what happens is the message box appears, but the inside is completely transparent and so i can see the game display behind it. And if i click inside it, then it does nothing but change the focus to that window. When i said freeze before i meant, it becomes "non responding" and so I have to open "Task Manager" and close it that way. This sounds like a thread issue. Are you calling JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(...) off of the EDT, the Event Dispatch Thread?

im wishing to sell my g4 powerbook after upgrading very quickly and wish to erase all data properly. i have no install disc so cannot do it this way nor do i have a firewall connection cable as ive read on a few discussions already, is there an easier alternative? i thought about deleting everything manually but i'm afraid i may miss things and this would take up alot of time also.
thanks in advance and much appreciated!

Follow these instructions step by step to prepare a Mac for sale:
Step One - Back up your data:
           A. If you have any Virtual PCs shut them down. They cannot be in their "fast saved" state. They must be shut down from inside Windows.
           B. Clone to an external drive using using Carbon Copy Cloner.
              1. Open Carbon Copy Cloner.
              2. Select the Source volume from the Select a source drop down menu on the left side.
              3. Select the Destination volume from the Select a destination drop down menu on the right
                  side.
              4. Click on the Clone button. If you are prompted about creating a clone of the Recovery HD be
                  sure to opt for that.
Destination means a freshly erased external backup drive. Source means the internal
                   startup drive.
Step Two - Prepare the machine for the new buyer:
              1. De-authorize the computer in iTunes! De-authorize both iTunes and Audible accounts.
2, Remove any Open Firmware passwords or Firmware passwords.
              3. Turn the brightness full up and volume nearly so.
              4. Turn off File Vault, if enabled.
              5. Disable iCloud, if enabled: See.What to do with iCloud before selling your computer
Step Three - Install a fresh OS:
         A. Snow Leopard and earlier versions of OS X
              1. Insert the original OS X install CD/DVD that came with your computer.
              2. Restart the computer while holding down the C key to boot from the CD/DVD.
              3. Select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu; repartition and reformat the internal hard drive.
Optionally, click on the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass.
              4. Install OS X.
              5. Upon completion DO NOT restart the computer.
              6. Shutdown the computer.
         B. Lion and Mountain Lion (if pre-installed on the computer at purchase*)
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because
it is three times faster than wireless.
              1. Restart the computer while holding down the COMMAND and R keys until the Mac OS X
                  Utilities window appears.
              2. Select Disk Utility from the Mac OS X Utilities window and click on the Continue button.
              3. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click
on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
              4. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on the Security button
and set the Zero Data option to one-pass.
              5. Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
              6. Quit DU and return to the Mac OS X Utilities window.
              7. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
              8. Upon completion shutdown the computer.
*If your computer came with Lion or Mountain Lion pre-installed then you are entitled to transfer your license once. If you If your computer came with Lion or Mountain Lion pre-installed then you are entitled to transfer your license once. If you purchased Lion or Mountain Lion from the App Store then you cannot transfer your license to another party. In the case of the latter you should install the original version of OS X that came with your computer. If this is not possible then simply erase the drive. You need to repartition the hard drive as well as reformat it; this will assure that the Recovery HD partition is removed. See Step Three above. You may verify these requirements by reviewing your OS X Software License.

  • Whats the easiest way to share iTunes library between two accounts

    Hi all
I have my account in leopard that has my entire music collection. I have just created a new account for my wife and would like her to have access to my library, having said that, I like my play lists and it would be ideal for her to have her own.
Any idea's on how to archive this

Move it from the Music folder of your home folder on the iMac to the same location on the MacBook Air; this can be done through target disk mode, or an external drive, or file sharing over a network. iTunes Store authorization won't automatically transfer, and any rented movies moved in this way won't play on the MacBook Air.

  • Whats the easiest way to migrate my itunes data from old failing PC to new PC so I can sync on new PC?

I have a failing PC that I sync my Ipad and Iphone to now. I have a new PC that I want to start using for this function. How do I migrate my Itunes Data Etc...so that I can sync on the new PC and not lose my apps, music, pics etc....There has to be a simple-stupid way of doing this. I have already downloaded Itunes on the new PC and just waiting for an answer to go forward.

These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
If you have an iOS device that syncs with contact & calendar data on your computer you should migrate this information too. If that isn't possible create a dummy entry of each type in your new profile and iTunes should offer to merge the existing data from the device into the computer, otherwise the danger is that it will wipe the information from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.

i would not do that wirelessly. first it is less reliable and, second, depending on the size of your lib, it may take ages. instead, connect both macs via ethernet cable or firewire (starting up the "source" Mac in target disk mode).
either drag & drop the entire iTunes folder from the source to the target or use the recommended steps here.

  • What's the easiest way to select all my files from all the folders on a hard drive and place into one folder?

    Hi there,
I have about 30,000 images all in hundreds of folders. I'm wondering what the easiest way to get them all into one folder so I can select and convert them all from .psd, .tiff, etc all to jpg. The reason I'm doing this is because the folder structure is such a mess, that I'm just going to import them all into aperture to sort everything. But the .tiffs and .psds are 100 mb each so I want to scale them to jpgs that are only 4 or 5 mb before I even think about importing them into aperture.
I tried doing a search for "kind is image" and it shows them all but a ton of them are renamed the same thing so when I try to select all and move into one folder it tells me I can skip that one or stop copying.
Any thoughts or ideas on this?
    Thanks,
    Caleb

    Hi russelldav,
one note on your data handling:
When  each of the 50 participants send the same 60 "words" you don't need 3000 global variables to store them!
You can reorganize those data into a cluster for each participant, and using an array of cluster to keep all the data in one "block".
You can initialize this array at the start of the program for the max number of participants, no need to (dynamically) add or delete elements from this array...
    Edited:
When all "words" have the same representation (I16 ?) you can make a 2D array instead of an array of cluster...

    Dear all,
I am looking forward to display a set of error messages(in a internal table) during the execution of the program to the user.

whats the easiest way to do the above exercise please, ive got elements 6, and also cs2  ?  thanks to all who help  lolwitphoto

    Good day!
    I’d recommend
    • making a Selection based on the object to be colorized (using whatever Selection Tools seem appropriate – Lasso, Magic Wand …)
    • creating a Solid Color Layer of the intended Color and setting it to the Blend Mode Color (Layer > New Fill Layer > Solid Color)
    • and then making whatever further corrections seem necessary
