Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu and check the processor.
If you're using a PowerPC G4 or G5 Mac, nothing; they can't be upgraded past 10.5.8.
If you're using an Intel Mac, click here and look the applications up.

  • G4 17" aluminum on 10.4.11, what's the newest OS version it can use?

I have an old powerbook g4 and it's been on 10.4.11 for a long time, there's a few things I wanted to run but they won't run on the old OS, what's the newest I can upgrade too?
Anyway to find out if my applications will function above 10.4.11?
If not I'm not sure I want to bother.
I also heard that there was a rebuild option, for a few hundred they'd replace anything that was damaged.
Here's the info from the system profiler:
    Hardware Overview:
    Machine Name: PowerBook G4 17"
    Machine Model: PowerBook5,7
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (1.2)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 1.67 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 167 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.9.1f1
    Serial Number: W8510-----
    Sudden Motion Sensor:
    State: Enabled
    Version: 1.0

The highest OS you can run is Leopard 10.5.X. 10.6 cannot run on a PowerPC processor. With the clock sped andRAM you have plus the video chipset (should be a Radeon 9700 with 126MB VRAM) Leo should run well.
Anyway to find out if my applications will function above 10.4.11?
If there is a particular third-party application that must run under the higher OS, you'll need to contact the developer. You could ask in the Leopard OS forums but I suspect you'll ge the same answer. Most apps that work in 10.4 should work in 10.5
I also heard that there was a rebuild option, for a few hundred they'd replace anything that was damaged.
The "flat-fee" thing is the "Depot repair." It repairs things that are worn/failed but "damaged" is a little different. It's my understating that the computer qualifies for depot repair if it shows no evidence of physical damage. Dropped or dunked computers need not apply, You'd also need to check to see if the depot repair is still available for a G4. Your model still shows as "supported" from a service standpoint, but what the depot can do depends on parts available.

  • Firefox 4 is awesome, but the main backbone addon of the same i.e.IDM cc... that is not working with it...thats the main drawback for user like me which makes us to immediately shift to the older version of firefox, and stop using the new version 4...

Try to include the IDM cc version which works with firefox 4 tooo, like the all other older versions...

You might try using the add-on 'NoSquint' which allows numerous zoom options specific to each page you visit & keeps your settings - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/nosquint/
If you want to go back to 3.6x, you will find it here:
    http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
In most cases you can simply "upgrade" (meaning downgrade) directly from the installation. It would be a good idea to save your passwords & bookmarks just to be on the safe side.

  • HT3669 I have an Epsom 1250 photo scanner that will not work with my new iMac.  I get an error report indicating 'scanner ot available' and the indicator light on the scanner goes to red.

When I try to use the scanner I get error message 'scanner not available' and the scanner indicator goes red .  I have contacted Epsom who advised me to run System update on my Mac several times which I havedone to no avail.  The scanner is in working order as it works satifactorily with my 'Windows' laptop.  The scanner is listed as being included in the driver updates but It would appear that the driver on my iMac supplied  in any update is not suitable.
I am currently running OSX 10.8.4
What steps should I now persue to be able to use the scanner?
    Alan.

    Howdy Susiesdad,
I would suggest the troubleshooting steps from this article named Troubleshooting printer issues in OS X found here http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3147
Don't let the name throw you off, the troubleshooting is relevant for scanners as well.
Follow these steps until the issue is addressed:
Make sure that the printer is powered on, has ink / toner, and that there are no alerts on the printer’s control panel. Note: If you cannot clear an alert on the printer's control panel, stop here and check the printer's documentation or contact the manufacturer for support.
Ensure the printer is properly connected to a USB port on the Mac or AirPort base station / Time Capsule. If the printer is a network-capable printer, make sure that it is properly connected to your home network.
Use Software Update to find and install the latest available updates. If an update is installed, see if the issue persists.
Open the Print & Scan pane or Print & Fax (Snow Leopard) pane in System Preferences.
Delete the affected printer, then add the printer again.
If the issue persists, try these additional steps:
Reset the printing system, then add the printer again.
If the issue still persists, reset the printing system again.  Download and install your printer's drivers. Then, add the printer again.
    All the best,
    Sterling

  • Firefox keeps asking me to update however when I check the updates compatability I find that it wont work with my security software [avg free] being reluctant to leave my computer open to attack I am not updating until this problem is resolved

*Firefox does not disable your security software, just the toolbar that it installs. Your security software is still working in the background to protect you.

  • I have recently upgraded to 4.0. Worked great. I have other software that will not work with this new version. Where do I go to download "older" version until I can get this problem resolved? Thanks

I contacted to tech support of the software and "they are working on it".

To downgrade to Firefox 3.6 first uninstall Firefox 4, but do not select the option to "Remove my Firefox personal data". If you select that option it will delete your bookmarks, passwords and other user data.
You can then install the latest version of Firefox 3.6 available from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html - it will automatically use your current bookmarks, passwords etc.
To avoid possible problems with downgrading, I recommend going to your profile folder and deleting the following files if they exist - extensions.cache, extensions.rdf, extensions.ini, extensions.sqlite and localstore.rdf. Deleting these files will force Firefox to rebuild the list of installed extensions, checking their compatibility, and reset toolbar customizations.
For details of how to find your profile folder see https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Profiles

  • In the earlier version of fire fox there was reload icaon. but with the firefox latest version i can't found it. is it exist with latest version?

with fire fox 3.5 there was a reload icon witch we can reload the page.but with the fire fox 4 i couldn't find a such a icon. My Question is is it exist with the fire fox4.

The 'Reload" button has been incorporated as part of the address bar. You'll find it at the far right end of the bar. If you want to put it back in the toolbar, you can go to: View > Toolbar > Customize and drag the "Reload" button to the toolbar. If you don't see the icon there, drag the one from the address bar and use that instead.

  • 7.0.1 will not work with Adobe acrobat pdf creator 1.1 - what, if anything can I do to 'make' pdfs?

wish I were smart enough to add details.... here's the best I can do: before installing 7.0.1 it says the adobe will not be compatible

You can't use system restore to go back to a previous Firefox version. SR only restores a few specific files and not all files. You will have to do a reinstall of your Firefox version.
You can find the latest Firefox release here:
    *Firefox 8.0.1: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
    *Firefox 7.0.1: ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/7.0.1
It is possible that there is a problem with the file(s) that store the extensions registry.
Delete the files extensions.* (e.g. extensions.sqlite, extensions.ini, extensions.cache) and compatibility.ini in the Firefox profile folder to reset the extensions registry.
New files will be created when required.
    See "Corrupt extension files":
    *https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Unable+to+install+add-ons
If you see disabled, not compatible, extensions in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions" then click the Tools button at the left side of the Search Bar (or click the "Find Updates" button in older Firefox versions) to do a compatibility check or see if there is a compatibility update available.

  • Whats the best Mal-ware and anti virus program that will check all of programs and see if there's anything hanging around from surfing

I will dissent. For a one time scan you could run Sophos. It will probably only pick up something meant for Windows, if at all, and it may throw a false positive at you, so don't be in a hurry to delete anything. I see you're running 10.8, which has some built in protection, but since it's an '09, you probably migrated stuff over from an earlier OS or Mac and it's also possible you weren't (or haven't been) observing safe browsing techniques, so it may find something genuine.

For the Sophos forum in order to get more help, if needed.
    http://openforum.sophos.com/t5/MacTalk/ct-p/FTT_MAC
When done, you can leave it if it's not causing any problems (but not set to auto scan) or uninstall it.

And don't let any A-V allow you to become complacent. It's only going to find something already catalogued, but it won't find any brand new threats.
Also, make sure you do not run Java (not JavaScript) in the browser. (Or just don't install the plugin, to begin with.) That would be asking for big trouble. Java is buggy and relentlessly exploited by malware.
Also, pay attention to updates in all your most used applications, Flash included.

  • The FASFA.edu.gov website for my financial aid will not work with Firefox newer than 4.0. How can I downgrade long enough to complete the application?

I contacted the online help there and was told there is nothing they could do and that I should go find another computer with a less current version of Firefox or IE.!!!! UGH....Government!

Yes as a one off using IE is probably the easiest answer. Another solution is to use Firefox3.6 portable (http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable/localization#legacy36 ) . Whilst on Firefox 5 it is worth using the feedback button or link (http://input.mozilla.com/en-US/feedback#sad ) so that the problem is logged.

  • HT3258 The scanner on my Canon inkjet printer MG6200 series will not work with Mountain Lion. How can I fix this?

The MP Navigator software in my scanner cannot be opened since I installed Mountain Lion. Canon say they don't have a way of fixing this, so is there a solution out there I wonder?

I have the MG6250 and MP Navigator v5.0.2 is working on my 10.8.2 Mac, so I don't know why the Canon support is telling you that it cannot be fixed.
To use MP Navigator you must have the full scanner driver installed. And when it is installed you then need to configure MP Navigator to use the networked MG62xx.
Also ensure you are using the latest version of MP Navigator. Try trashing the one you currently have in Applications > Canon Utilities and then installing this latest version.

Try Safari > Preferences > Advanced and down the botton tick Show Develop Menu In Menu Bar. Now you will see Develop in the top menu in Safari, click on it to open the drop down window, go to User Agent and select Internet Explorer and see if this allows you to open the page. Otherwise, as Deggie said, it's up to a Windows Install on your Mac through Bootcamp or Paralells or the like to run IE within Windows.
