Whats the real size of a 1TB drive?

Hello,
Whats the real storage size of a 1TB drive? I just formatted a 1TB drive in Disk Utility using Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and the disc is running about 931.5. Where does the rest of the storage go?
thanks

-> http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1867 (this article is for iPods but this info applies to all disk drives)
"Why the difference? Most hard disk manufacturers measure disk size this way: 1 MB = 1 million bytes (1000 * 1000). A 4 GB disk, therefore, is one that holds 4 billion bytes. Computers, including Windows computers, Macintosh computers and iPod, measure disk size this way: 1 MB = 1 048 576 bytes (1024 * 1024). The difference in these two calculations is what causes the drive to appear as 3.7 GB on a computer, but actually be a 4 billion byte disk."

  • How do you increase the volumne size of a hard drive partition?

how do you increase the volumne size of a hard drive partition? the drive is set up into 3 partitions C, HP_tools and, recovery, C has space and would like to move some to HP_tools that is full. when I run backup I get drive full. I have run backup now to an external drive so that is not an issue.

    Hi,
Firstly please don't keep anything in HP_TOOLS except things have been there. You can use Windows systems tool called Disk  Management. Please use the following tutorial:

  • How do I find out what the file size is before I purchase and download a movie?

I cannot find the file size for movies or TV shows anywhere on iTunes. I need to know how big the file is before I download it.

    What is "Other"
It’s generally a combination of local caches from apps, browsers, mail, Messages, Reading List, saved games, app-specific documents and data, notes, and voice memos.
You can backup and restore to reduce "other" but they will start building up over time.

  • Whats the best size Sorenson or other for Pro Tools session

Having trouble creating reels that are small enough in size to hand over for sound. They are using Pro Tools
My reel sequences are about 15 mins, 23.98, letterbox, 16bit, 48k
I've used the sorenson video 3- but its way to big. Any idea on what size the custom size setting should be? Looking for best yet smallish file.

Welcome to the discussions, Mark. What size are you looking to create? What are you using to compress?

  • Whats the real name of the orange, green and black 3.5mm jac

So what is the real name of the three orange, green and black 3.5mm jacks?
Only i cant really search for orange, green and black anywhere other than here

    yourdogsmom wrote:
Yeah but is there not a name for all three cables?
EXAMPLE - red/white/yellow are scart cables.
scart cable doesn't have any color....http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scart?red/white/yellow are A/V cableyellow for video, red and white for audio. Those 3.5mm cable Creative uses are simply stereo cable. What Creative do is join 3 pieces of stereo cable together only. Nothing special about them.

  • Whats the REAL FX5500-T128 memory bus?

    Hello everyone!
I already searched for the same question in the forum, finding several posts about it, and none of them is usefull, all have lies and insults, i just want the real information, without fanatisms. Im a proud user of a MSI K8N Neo Plat. so, im not going to bash MSI without a cause.
Here are the other posts i found:
    GeForce FX 5500-T128
    FX5500-T128 memory interface 64bits or 128??
I think the MSI lies: See the true 64 or 128 bits
Here an Admin posted a link
MSI GeForceFX 5600Xt-TD128 vs. GeForceFX 5500-T128
To the MSI USA site where MSI says NOTHING about the memory interface but he manages to QUOTE the site saying 64bit. Even when on the previous post everyone in the forum was saying the card has 128bit (except the actual owners of the cards --weird, eh?)!
Also, im going to quote the following statements:
Here, in the MSI MIAMI Site, it says the following:
    http://www.msimiami.com/spanish/products/detail_spec/FX5500%20-T128_spa.htm
    Quote
    # Performance
    # Dobles RAMDACs: 350MHz.
So, there is NO ONE who actually knows the real memory bus on this card?
This is the official MSI Forum! There should be at least one person from the company crawling around! I cant believe that a forum hosted on msi.com.tw has no one from the company to clear out things like this.
Also there is some that say the card with 4 memory chips are 64bit, well, this one has 4 memory chips if you have a good look at the picture on the site above.
Another thing that misleads me (and several people) is that MSI usually call the 64bit cards FX(gpu)-T(memory) while the 128bit are FX(gpu)-TD(memory) (although the D, I think is more related to the DVI thing).
I was about to buy this card, and im really pissed off with MSI for not being clear on what they are selling, im emailing them right now to see if they had an error on the site or whats going on.
I really hope no-one takes this post as offensive, but i find all this very confusing (not to say disturbing)

    elcuervito,
One way to find out exactly what you have is with RivaTuner. As an example, here is the portion data pulled on my Vid Card:

  • Whats the real price???

    Hi
I just want to know the real price of the new iphone 3G. cos i want to buy one and i want to buy from USA>...
its not here yet.and someone told me its like 700$ is it real??
and do anyone know when it will be in QATAR and how much it will be??

The iPhone is sold in the U.S. as carrier locked with AT&T only.
The iPhone 3G in the U.S. can be purchased at an AT&T or Apple Store and activation with AT&T is required at the store when the iPhone 3G is purchased.
No one here knows when the iPhone 3G will be available in QATAR and if so, what the price charged will be which is determined by the cellular provider for the iPhone in each country.

  • .oneColFixCtrHdr - Vertically center container no matter what the window size is

    The site is leescottfineart.com
I want the container to vertically center no matter what the viewer's window size is.
    Any suggestions - thanks, Patti

Vertical centering is a Print concept; not appropriate to web design except for special situations like Splash/Intro pages or business cards.  See demo below:
    http://alt-web.com/TEMPLATES/vertical-center.html
Horizontal centering is all you need in most situations.
If you feel the page would look better with some top margins and padding, add them to the body CSS code.

  • How do you Determine the Largest Size/Fastest Speed Hard Drive

In general, how do you determine the maximum hard drive size/speed you can upgrade to?

As long as the drive your are considering physically fits as already stated there is no maximum size you can install. Please complete your profile so we know what machine you have.
If your machine is covered by a warranty or AppleCare I would recommend against installing another HD as this may invalidate the warranty. I would recommend in that case using a Firewire 800 external HD instead.

  • Moving LR catalog ( ie . ircat files )  and the real photographs to a new drive , can you do this in LR ? or seperatly and which do I do first ?

I want to get everything off my hard drive and work in catalogs on an external drive but I need all my older photos moved too .

You move your catalog file using your operating system. Move it to wherever you want it to be, and then double-click on it. Please understand that your catalog file ought to reside on your fastest disk; if you move it to an external drive you may notice slower performance.
You move your photos via this procedure: Adobe Lightroom - Find moved or missing files and folders
It doesn't matter what order you do it in
You used the phrase "work in catalogs" (plural), may I recommend that you work with a single catalog, there are usually plenty of advantages to using a single catalog, and no real disadvantages

  • Whats the difference btwn 320gb & 500gb  hard drive??

Can someone just give me some clear differences between a 320 gb and a 500 gb hard drive?  I didnt really understand all of this and it wasnt really explained or I wouldve gotten a larger hard drive.  Ive been told it is cheap to get a bigger hard drive when you first order but Apple will charge a lot later (you pay parts & labor)...
Lately, Ive been getting concerned that if I start using all the programs, downloading apps, taking photos, movies, and downloading music, I will end up filling it up.  Also I heard that your external hard drive should be double the regular hard drive..but they dont sell them in 640gb?  I guess thats because Time Machine makes copies of everything multiple times.
Anyway , just was curious of the hard drive and what experienced Mac users have found...How much hard drive do you use?  I just assumed since 320 was what it came with, that was fine. Some people tell me youll never come close to filling that, but I dont have a lot on my computer right now (just 4000 songs and maybe <1000 photos and a few minutes of video) and it already says its 60gb+ full...so if I start taking a lot of photos and videos, wont it fill up quickly?
    Thanks

    180GB

Yes, users tend to collect stuff like pack rats. So the larger the drive is up front the less often it has to be replaced.
However  we can still do it ourselves and not violate the warranty/Apple Care as long as there isn't any damage, they won't cover it of course.
Also I heard that your external hard drive should be double the regular hard drive..but they dont sell them in 640gb?  I guess thats because Time Machine makes copies of everything multiple times.
More than double as TM keeps changes of cetain files that were changed so you can retireve earlier versions, to a certain point of course.
Anyway , just was curious of the hard drive and what experienced Mac users have found...How much hard drive do you use?
I use a hold option bootable clone, so my external hard drive only has to be the size of my internal boot drive, but it can be larger.
so if I start taking a lot of photos and videos, wont it fill up quickly?
    Heck yes, especially HD video.
