Whats the sweet spot for the count of Photos per Library?

1) How many photos should be there in a Library at max. to have iPhoto perform efficiently?
2) Does the iPhoto Library database performance depend on the size of the photo or the count of photo?
I have a collection of some 7000+ photos of 2.5MB on average.
Should i put all of them in a library or different library?
Also if i have to set up different library i want to have backup of them in a DVD for each library. So, technically my library should not exceed 4.5GB
Now my confusion is:
If i have say 3GB of original photos in the library then technically i'll have around 3-6GB of photos in both Original and Modified folders.
Going through the forum I have found that there are 2 ways of backing up photos:
1) Through "Export" to a Folder and writing the folder the a media.
2) By Copying the Library Folder completely to backup media.
If my assumption is right then,
1) in case of "Export" method, i'll be having a collection of the total number of photos i have. i.e. if i have 3000 photos then the exported folder will contain 3000 photos.
2) in case of "Copying" then i'll be copying the OriginalModified+Datadatabase, and i could restore them as a library when needed.
Please let me know if my assumption is right or wrong.
Thanks,
Sapam

1) How many photos should be there in a Library at max. to have iPhoto perform efficiently?
iPhoto is rated to 250,000 pics. After that there is no right answer based on iPhoto. What you need to take into account after that is Hardware. The max for an efficiently perfoming iPhoto will be very different for a Mini with 512MB of RAM and a MacPro with 8 Gigs of RAM. Other factors include the size of the disk and the amount of free space on it.
2) Does the iPhoto Library database performance depend on the size of the photo or the count of photo?
The count of the photos - and then some. The files are stored in the Finder. So a 1 MB file takes the same amount of space in the iPhoto database as a 10MB file. However, what does impact on the size of the library file are things like the number of albums, books, slideshows etc., Smart albums, in particular, can slow down the app launching. So, it's not just the number of photos but the organisation as well.
So, what's your Hardware and what do you mean by efficiently? I have a 15k image library that's some 40gigs in size on my iMac with 2 gigs of RAM. I'm very happy with it's performance.

Close.
Think of it this way:
Want to save the current versions of your pics only? Select the pics in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. Export them to a folder on the desktop. Burn that with the finder. Now you have the up-to-date versions of your pics. pop that disk in any computer and there they are.
Want to save your Library - that is Originals, Modifieds, database files etc?
1. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder to an external HD or burn it to DVD
or
2. Use the Share -> Burn command. This will burn a disc that will mount into another iPhoto, and pics can be dragged to the new iPhoto from it. You can burn your entire library, or break it into albums and burn in groups of albums if your DVD isn't big enough.

  • What could cause iPhoto '11 to not update the count of photos in my library?

    Hi folks,
I've been adding photos pretty consistently over the last few weeks, and I've noticed the number of photos in my iPhoto library never changes - see below. It's been at 14,774 photos for a number of weeks now. I just imported 17 additional photos, and the 14,774 count didn't change.
Has anyone experienced this? What is the solution to fix? What does it possibly mean, if anything?
    Thanks!

In the iPhoto Preferences, turn off items counts and then turn them back on again.

  • Whats the point of Photos if you don't use the cloud?

I find iPhoto useful as quick reference library for my images. Most of the time I use Lightroom & Photoshop, but iPhoto and Aperture have their uses. Given my experience of the apallingly poor (virtually non-existant) synchronisation using iCloud with Pages, Numbers and Keynote that I have experienced over the past few months despite repeatably checking that I have the latest versions etc. I will NEVER store my images on someone else's servers. To that end, what is the point of Photos?
I own a number of 2TB & 3TB hard drives which store my images and backup reliably and which I have already paid for. Why would I want to pay Apple to store yet more copies and suffer the inevitable loss of control over retrieving them, which is what I have experienced with Pages, Numbers and Keynote.
As regards synchronising with all my devices - no thanks. I can easily copy images to my iPad via iTunes. No doubt Apple will remove this option at some point to force us to rent space on the Cloud. When that happens I will abandon Apple totally. You have been warned Apple execs!

What I don't understand is your comment that you use iPhoto as a quick reference library for your photos? Why would you not use Lightroom for that purpose - a much better photo management tool than iPhoto is.
As to why you would use Photos - again it would depend on your answer to the above question. The same way you import your photos into iPhoto you can import them into Photos and use it as a "quick reference tool". And you don't have to enable iCloud Photo Library, just keep your photos on your own computer/drives. I don't use iPhoto (my wife did) and I used Aperture and Pixelmator (a Photoshop-lite alternative). I plan on using Photos (and the iCloud Photo Library) to the photos that my wife and I take with our iPhones (and the ones we decide to save from Facebook) mainly. I occasionally will add some photos from Aperture (or Lightroom when I get around to migrating to that from Aperture) that my wife wants access to.

  • Sweet spot for used or refurbished Air?

i have a 2009 MBP and i was digging the idea of a 12" macbook to get myself portable with a netbook or quickbooks or website editing, social media worthy machine that i can throw into my bag b/c right now the 2009 13" is too much of a beast and basically doesn't do much for me. also, if i get a 15" MBP to replace the 2009 it is going to be way to heavy to take around on a regular basis. basically i am using the mac pros for work but would like a portable daily machine to get things done with.
is there such a thing as a high powered, sturdy AIR that i could pick up either used or refurbished?
i have two Mac Pro's that are just awesome machines and i'd like to start feeling that way about my laptops.
    THANKS in advance

tech specs are not what i am looking for. i have no practical baseline and i'm not that tech/spec oriented.
here's what i'm hoping for: "i have a 2013/2014 11" air and i absolutely love it. i run some CAD, MS, pages, we site editing, quickbooks and some adobe programs. it's my daily use computer and goes everywhere in my bag. battery life is great. i also have a 15" MBP and if i have to get heavy work done i brimg that".

  • What the **** is this Upgrade My Library option all about?

It says that for a bargain price of £2.00 I can upgrade my copy of Funf by Clinic, 25p a song it is and 40p a video. If I pay them for this, they will send me a new copy to replace my existing copy.
Why oh why would I want to?
What is it better quality or something?
    Funk dat.
Explain it to me please somebody.

    Hi, STU9000!
I think that Upgrade your Library thing is just so you can get the song or video as a DRM-free file. I'm really not sure if there is a quality difference; I have upgraded a few of my songs but I don't remember if the file sounded any different. You could try for yourself and buy one upgrade and see if there is a difference.
Oh, and if I remember correctly, iTunes will ask you if you want to delete the old file after the upgrade; don't do that, that way you can compare the files.
    Hope this helps!

  • What Is iCloud Storage For? Movies? Photos?

I want a way to save my photos, files and movies so that I can remove them from my hard drive. I use Time Machine with an external hard drive, but since this constantly overwrites old files, I am concerned that I will inadvertently lose these. I used to back these items up on DVDs, but with iTunes 11, I can't do this. I understand that iCloud syncronizes my contacts, photo stream, calendar, and so on with all of my connected devices. But what is the additional storage for if I cannot place my movies, pictures, and so forth there?
I have used Apple products for quite a long time, but I have to say that I am baffled by all of this. Does iTunes automatically keep my purchased songs and movies, which would allow me to remove those I don't use on a regular basis from my computer? If not, can these be stored in iCloud?
Sorry for the convoluted question, but I cannot figure this out, and I am feeling dumber by the minute!

All of the services allow you to earn more, only DropBox makes you start at such a low level.

Nope, still wrong. A complaint was made to the FTC by a security researcher for alleged misleading claims, but it has never been investigated by the FTC and none of the researchers claims upheld. To re-use part of your reply to me: "check your facts before posting". ;-)
After the investigation DropBox had to change their claims to show that Employees were able to see your files, (unlike the previous claim that they could not)
DropBox has suffered from numerous breaces of security, 2011, 2012, 2013 and earlier, you can use what you choose, and you can continue to choose to gnore the breaches, it's no issue for me. Read these:

  • What was that trick for getting songs from Ipod to library??

Hi, a long time ago (like 4 months), I asked if there was anyway for me to to transfer songs from my ipod to my library. Some person (sorry I forgot your name, it was 4 months ago) posted a way to do it without a program. I printed it out but lost it. The only thing I remember about the trick was that it involved connecting the ipod to the comp and opening up the ipod options so that when you saved the music files the computer would be preoccupied with the options window or something to that effect. Thanks for the help.

Well, when I first got my iPod, I brought it to a couple of my friends and they hooked it up to their itunes and gave me about 3-400 songs. So when I brought it back to my house I needed a way to get the songs from my iPod to my library. Now I have a new computer that I am bringing to college, so I want to put all 800 something songs on my new computer's itunes library. Thanks for the help, I'm goignt to try it right now.

  • What's the difference between photos and albums

I'm trying to figure out what the difference between photos and albums is on my ipad 'photos' programme.
What I'm really trying to do is to delete photos from my phone so that I'm not going over 5GB on my icloud and I don't want to lose them, so I'm checking to see where they are stored on ipad.

    Hello julian
As far as what iCloud backs up, it is backing up the photos and videos in the Camera Roll. If you want to ensure that your pictures are backed up, then follow the steps in the last article to import them to your computer. One thing to note is that you cannot import your albums that you create. If those photos are not in your camera roll, import the photos to your camera roll.

  • Re: RAM - Sweet Spot

    Hey guys,
Does anyone know of any benchmarks out there that tests for the RAM sweet spot for Adobe Premiere Pro CS5?
Windows 7 64-bit Professional can support up to 192GB of RAM.  When is it too much RAM?

    Hey guys,
Thanks for the link to PPBM5, I will definitely check it out!
Also for the 'memory chips' or DIMM size as they say in the industry, there are actually 16GB DDR3 ECC Registered modules out there.  The cheapest is the Hynix 16GB (DDR3 ECC Registered) at memorydepot.com for $500.  All the new server/workstation boards support it (well actually the memory controller embedded on the die of the AMD and Intel CPUI's support it).
The upcoming AMD Interlagos and Xeon E7-xxxx chips will support 32GB Modules (Samsung is the first to provide the actual chips to ODM's).
I think the main thing for me (keep in mind I have yet to check out the PPBM5 site yet, so my opinion may change after having checked it) is to get a motherboard that has the most expandability so that later on I can add more RAM.  Right now I really like the Asus KGPE board (this is an AMD Opteron Socket G34 chipset) as it has 16 DIMM slots with each of them supporting up to 16GB sized modules!
Yes I know that Windows 7 64-bit Profissional/Ultimate only supports up to 192GB, but again it is about future proofing as my current motherboard 'only' supports 16GB in total.
Also I like the AMD Opteron platform (Socket G34) because future AMD chips (at least for the next cycle of SKU's) will support the SAME motherboard without having to buy a new one unlike with Intel.
Althernatively there is the SUPERMICRO MBD-H8SGL-F-O motherboard which is also Socket G34 for AMD and is a SINGLE socket board with 8 x DIMMs with each DIMM supporting 16GB modules, this would be a good economical choice.  The board is also half the price of the Asus KGPE.
Intel however doesn't seem to have the same value offering, although yes they do perform better with Premiere Pro CS5 so it may be worth the price premium.

  • IOS 8:  Where can I see count of photos in an album?

How do I see the count of photos in an album on my device?  Don't tell me to look in iTunes on the Photos tab.  Too many times iTunes doesn't sync all the photos in an album and I liked to cross check the counts on the device.  It doesn't appear I can do that any more in iOS 8 (Thanks Tim!).
Or is there something I'm missing?

If you are CM07, this is NOT a simple how exactly do you detect that a computer is a VM? You can guess by looking at the manufacturer name but it is only a guess.

  • Imported Photos But Front Row Says "No Photos In Library"  --- What Gives?

I imported many (about 3500) photos into iPhoto. When I launch Front Row, it says I have no photos imported. Does anyone know if I'm doing something wrong?
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    - Brad Jacob

Hi! same problem occured today. I am runing the latest version of frontrow and iphoto. This is it:
    - I had a mere 40 photos in my iphoto library yesterday, and I could view them with out any problem in frontrow and iphoto.
    - This morning i copied 3000 images from a DVD to my harddrive and then imported them to iphoto via the drag and drop method. I had also checked the option "copy images to my iphoto-library" in my iphoto prefs.pane.
    - Everything worked well and all my images were copied to iphoto and organized into their different categories. I checked my iphotolibrary in "finder" to make sure my images were in the "originals" folder, which they were, and still are.
    - Then I deleted the other files from my hd, knowing that they were saved in the library.
    - Then I ran frontrow and got the message "no photos in library", the 40photos i had yesterday could not be viewed anymore and my 3000 new photos could not be viewed in frontrow.
    - iPhoto on the other hand works perfect as it always has. And all my images are displayed there.
    - What`s up? Is there a special folder that frontrow checks for images? could this be where the problem is?
