Whats up with IMAP + Gmail + Apple mail

Dear folks,
I've been searching the entire (no really) internet for some answers but nothing seems to work and it's starting to annoy me now! The problem is that i've been using IMAP and Gmail perfectly for years on my mac. Recently i bought a new macbook pro and all of a sudden i cant receive any more emails! It just says it cant reach the IMAP server 'cause my password/username isn't right. I've tried just about anything. I know about the terminal trick where you delete some hidden folders and the capthca tricks. I've tried them all, nothing seems to work!
I pay Apple a lot of money so it really bothers me that something like receiving email is such a big deal.. Can anyone please help me with this problem? It shouldnt be so hard right?
Thanks guys!

As you're trying to connect via IMAP is it safe to assume that you don't have any local emails stored? If you don't you could try wiping the Mail settings and start from scratch - see if that makes any difference. I only suggest that as accessing gmail via IMAP is working for me.
If that doesn't work then as a long shot, what does imap.gmail.com resolve to for you? For me it's currently 209.85.229.109 (I'm assuming they have a few machines) and what happens if use that IP address instead of the URL?

  • IMAP Gmail + Apple Mail = strange behavior?

I'm using Apple Mail 3.0 and Gmail IMAP. I have several mailboxes (Gmail calls them "labels", I guess) set up in Gmail's webmail application, and they are mirrored on Apple Mail. I have also set up Gmail to download mail from three different POP account.
Here's the problem: for some reason, when I click on a message that has been downloaded from one of the POP accounts in the inbox in Apple Mail, it still appears as "unread" in Gmail webmail and in the "All Mail" Gmail folder in Apple Mail.
Somehow Gmail doesn't know that I'm clicking on the message, so it stays marked "unread". Because it stays marked unread, it is not automatically deleted after 30 days as it should be (I've been told that the 30-day period is not related to the date the message was sent, but to the time it was first accessed.) This means that I have several months of old messages stored on the Gmail server (and in my Gmail folders in Mail) that I don't want there.
Or it means that I have to manually go into the Gmail "All Mail" folder, either on Gmail webmail or in the "All Mail" Gmail folder in Mail on my computer, and manually click on the messages to mark them as read. This gets VERY tedious throughout the day.
Anyone else encountered this issue and figured out how to resolve it?

Sorry, I just noticed something. The problem is not only with the mail that comes in from the Fetch accounts. It also happens with mail sent to Gmail.
In the left-hand column of Mail 3.0, there's a folder called "Gmail" with a triangle next to it. Let's say a new mail comes into my inbox to my Gmail address. If I click on it in the inbox, it gets marked as unread in the inbox. However, I still see a "1" next to the Gmail folder indicating there's an unread message. If I click on the triangle to expand the folder, and then click on "All Mail", the folder seems to "update" itself and the unread email is marked as read (without me clicking on the actual message).
Otherwise, it seems to stay marked unread. Why is this?

  • IMAP Gmail & Apple Mail: Organizing Emails

I’ve just switched from POP to IMAP on Mail.app in an effort to synch my iPhone and my Mail.app. I followed the step-by-step instructions on Gmail’s support page. I’ve got a few questions . . .
    1) What’s the best way to organize the thousands of emails archived in the new All Mail Folder? I’d like to create basic folders (i.e. Work, Family, School) to sort my emails.
    2) Can I use the Apple’s “Sent” Folder (the one with the paper plane icon) to view all of my sent emaisl? Or will my history of sent emails forever be stored in the Gmail “Sent” subfolder?
    Thanks.

    Hi Ishrak,
I apologize, I'm a bit unclear on exactly what you are trying to log into with your Apple ID, or what exactly you are seeing (alert message, directions, etc) when you try to do so. If you continue to have issues with your Apple ID, you may find one or more of the articles linked from the following page helpful:

  • What's the difference in Apple Mail using "On My Mac" folders vs Export Mailbox?

What's the difference in Apple Mail using "On My Mac" folders vs Export Mailbox?

One (On My Mac) is a set of folders, the other is a way to export a mailbox for archiving or transfer to another machine.
What do you want to do, these are not even similar.

my youtube app is gone dissapeared, whats up with that, did Apple secretly removed it because it can't be deleted?

It is not gone and Apple did not remove it.
It is either on one of the home screens or in a folder, unless restrictions have been enabled and it was blocked.
Check Settings > General > Restrictions.  If Restrictions are enbabled, is YouTube restricted?
If all else fails, Settings > General > Reset > Reset Home Screen layout.

  • Blank Emails with Attachments from Apple Mail if received into Gmail IMAP.

    Hi
I have noticed that if I receive an email with an attachment from someone using Apple Mail to my Gmail IMAP account (in Apple Mail) the body of the text is blank. I get the attachment but the only way to read the body of the email is to show the Raw Source. Has anyone else had the same problem and does anyone have a solution?

Not me and I use gmail's IMAP service with Apple Mail frequently. You're probably better off posting this question on google's gmail forum which you can get to via the help section on the gmail.com web site.

  • Gmail & Apple Mail not playing nice via IMAP

Would like to get feedback from other users who are Gmail subscribers and use Apple Mail as their main application.
I have had good success with ML Apple Mail...Snow Leopard I preferred Sparrow.  Until recently I had no issues and everything was playing nicely.  However, in the last 2 or so weeks I have noticed odd behaviors between the two platforms.  What I noticed first was that mail that was read on my phone was still showing unread in Apple Mail.  A re-sync didn't solve it but a quit and restart of Mail did.  Hmmm.  Now I also notice that sometimes in deleting mail my whol folder for my Gmail account would show nothing and a restart of the program would fix that.
Yes, I did do quite a bit of searching on the internet.  I had deleted the account and restablished it...no fix...deleted library folder containing the mail data so it would rebuild...no fix.  So I thought maybe it was an issue with IMAP and Google.  I'm an apps user so I actually got a response from Google.  They have no fix other than telling me to use Thunderbird as "Due to the way in which Apple Mail is coded, we don't officialy support Apple Mail 5 or 6 as IMAP clients."  Huh?  Geez, I didn't have any issues before.
Oh, and yes, I have read How To's on setting up Apple Mail with Gmail.  Before using Sparrow on SL, I had used Apple Mail for quite some time.  So not new to using it with Gmail.
So I am wondering what others are experiencing and any fixes they might have if similar.  I don't like using the web interface and have gotten use to the flow of ML Apple Mail and like it.  I am trying Postbox and will also try Thunderbird (though the lack of program advancement is a bit of a negative).
    Thanks for any input.
    Mike

I noticed some views but no suggestions.  Is anyone else experiencing the issue of read Emails on phone still showing unread in Apple Mail?

  • How should I mark a message as spam when using Mail with IMAP Gmail

    Hi,
I've been using Apple Mail 3.2 with Gmail's IMAP for several month's and am very happy with the setup. One feature of Gmail that's great is the spam filtering, however, every day a couple spam messages get through the filtering. My question is this: What's the best way to train Gmail of a spam message?
Accessing Gmail through the Safari allows you to mark a message as Spam. I assume that Gmail then does something to train its algorithm that spam has been received so that a similar message will go direct to the Spam folder the next time its received.
I prefer to deal with my email via Apple Mail or via the iPhone Mail and have been moving spam messages to the Spam folder. Does this action do anything to train Gmail's spam filtering so that a similar message will go direct to the spam folder?
    Thanks

    Hello Hal:
I think you will get a better answer to your question by contacting G-mail. In my case, I use AOL mail in Apple's mail application. AOL catches the vast majority of spam/junk and it is placed in a spam folder. The few that get through seem to be trapped by Apple's mail and placed in the Junk folder.

  • Help with imap gmail account via mac mail

What are the best settings for gmail as imap in mac mail?
I have my gmail account set up with mac Mail as an IMAP account.
I notice that in the last few weeks?? not sure how long, my mac mail is taking forever to load.  I opened the activity window and it seems like there are so many things happening.  I did find an old account that was still had some activity and while I had delteed it, I did need to do a few more steps to get it out of the process.
Now, as it still seems to take forever for my inbox to fully load, I began looking into the settings.
I am not able to change the settings for trash and I think saving the deleted messages to the server could be a waste of time.  This is the advanced setttings page
the trash is 'grayed out' and won't allow me to uncheck the 'store deleted messages on the server'.  Anyone know how to change this?
Also, I want to uncheck 'store sent messages on the server' as I think that will save a LOT of process activity, but gmail's directions for imap accounts says to leave it checked.  Not sure why, any thoughts?
    Michelle

I'm not familiar with CalbeOne, but you can follow the instructions they provided at their site:
    http://help.cableone.net/HSD/mycableone/migrate/default.aspx
You might also want to make sure you followed their transfer instructions.
Build your accounts in Mail as per the POP or IMAP settings provided. When adding accounts to Mail, when you get to the first screen, you can hold the option key down when you hit continue for more options on the Mail configurations rather than the standard defaults.
If you are viewing these accounts at the gmail website, then you might need to do some configuration there also. I'm not sure on how much they are integrated with gmail.

  • Simulate gmail archive behavior with iCloud and apple mail (lion)

does anyone know of a way to configure an iCloud mail account in apple mail (lion) such that the delete button actually archives email?  i'd like to simulate the behavior of a gmail account in apple mail, which does just that, i.e. delete sends messages to the "All Mail" folder.  in this case, i'd like it to send emails to the "Archive" folder.  as i have one gmail account and one iCloud account, it would be great if there was one consistent means of archiving mail, versus using the ctrl-cmd-A shortcut for iCloud mail.
iOS 5 actually has such a setting to do just that: "Archive Messages" under the iCloud mail settings.  so it seems strange to me that apple mail would not.
    thanks!

Actually, Apple has always supported using custom folders in iMap for Deleted Messages, Drafts, Sent, & Junk. But I agree that with the release of 10.7.2 and iCloud with their new Archive feature, they haven't made it easy!
I run my Mac in Swedish, so forgive me if I don't remember or get the exact wording of each option 100% correct, but I'm sure you'll figure it:
In Mail Settings under your iCloud account, and in the middle tab (Mail Box Functions?), under the trash option at the bottom, make sure that:
Move deleted mail to the trash can is Checked!
Save deleted mail on on the server is Checked!
Delete trashed (?) mail permanently is set to NEVER!
Then go back to the main mail window and display the folders for your iCloud account on the LH side
    Select your achive folder.
Go to the Mail Box menu in the menubar, Select "Use this mailbox for..." and then Select trash.
You will not notice that your archive folder now appears under the trash can in Apple Lion Mail (and the deleted items folder that is no longer the trash will appear under the folders).
This works a treat, and in fact I use this for Gmail as well. If you're interested, I have so much mail in all mail, but I want to have everything in Apple Mail. I also get to have a private backup on my Mac (and Time Machine).
So, in Gmail, I have an "Apple Trash" folder which I link to deleted items as above, and which every six months or so I relabel (in the gmail app) to another folder. That way I don't have 50,000 mails in my trash. I don't activate All Mail in Gmail's IMAP because everything I have is always in at least one other folder / lable which syncs to my mac!

  • Gmail apple mail password

I am using Apple mail to send/receive mail from Gmail Account, it was working properly. Yesterday I changed my gmail pasword from website for securiy, and then my Apple mail send a warning. So naturally, I changed my password too in Apple Mail Gmail Account, but it seems it doesn't work. It continued to say I can't connect to imap.gmail.com
    I've tried:
    1. Check Apple mail for gmail account setting, no problem.
    2. Check online gmail account IMAP is enabled.
    3. Delete the gmail account in Apple mail, recreate again, doesn't work!
    4. Try my password on the website and i m sure i typed the same password.
It also failed on my iphone4S too.
    HELP!

For the Mac, try deleting the password entry in Keychain Access. However, if you are also having problems with the iPhone, maybe both systems are having trouble with the password itself.
Does the Connection Doctor (Windows menu) in Mail give any hints. You can also show details and run the connection doctor again and see what messages are passed back and forth. The gmail server may post something back that gives a hint above what is in the blinky light screen.

  • Gmail / apple mail, assuming mavericks upgrade issue. Messages from/to and subject header do not match displayed message

    Hi Everyone
Hoping someone has had a similar issue and can help me sort it out.
Since Upgrading to mavericks a few weeks ago, I notice the follwoing issue in my apple mail when searching older messages (newer ones seem fine at the moment).
A lot ( I cant say all, but quite a few well into the 80-90% plus of messages sent pre update) have gotten scrambled. I can search from/ to and subject headers, and they correspond with each other. But when i select the message Im looking for, the message desplayed is from a different sender (with a diferent subject)
Ex I search for JohnDoe (happens if i use search function or just go manually looking thru folders) and subject "Quote", Message comes up (or I find as in manual search). When i select the message the message displayed is not the correct one. Its From JaneDoe with a subject "Thanksgiving" and its message.
Obviously making it a little tricky to track down previous emails.
My mail provider is Gmail (which I have heard mavericks / apple mail have been having lots of issues with).
Hopeefully someone knows what I can do
    Thanks
    BigRed81

    Hello BigRed81,
I have a question on this subject.  I am having the same issue.  I followed the link to the support page for rebuidling a mailbox.  It states :
"When you rebuild mailboxes for IMAP and Exchange accounts, locally stored messages and attachments are discarded, and the messages and attachments are downloaded again from the server to your Mac. Your mailbox appears empty until the download is complete."
I use gmail just for my Inbox.  I pull off all of my messages from the server by filing them on my mac.  So my concern is if I rebuild a mailbox, my mail account is gmail imap, and I do not have copies of my emails on the gmail server anymore that I will lose the majority of my mail because there is nothing to download again.
Do you know if this will happen?  Or I should not be concerned?
    Thanks

  • Gmail, Apple Mail, and excluding mailbox spotlight indexing

    Hello,
I use Apple Mail with my gmail IMAP account. Therefore I have a big mailbox "All Mail" where I have duplicates for all emails in "Sent" and my other tags (mailboxes in Apple Mail).
Whenever i search for something, I always get duplicate results, one from Inbox, the same email in All Mail, for example. I've added the "All mail" mailbox to the list of Spotlight exclusions, but Apple Mail seems to ignore this, because I still get results from that mailbox.
Also tried resetting hte spotlight index but this doesn't fix it.
Any ideas on how to force a mailbox not to be indexed by spotlight?
    Thanks.

Thanks, Andy. I should have posted a closure statement on this thread as I finally figured everything out. The most frustrating thing is Google's own advice at http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=78892# couldn't further from correct. After many hours of experimenting with settings, I finally came up with the correct ones. In fact, I'm in the process of writing an article about it since there is simply no definitive guidance on the web that I've been able to find in the time I've searched.
Your comments are on target...everything on the *Behaviors Tab* needs to be checked (excepts Notes) and the *Delete when* settings must be set to Never. But there are a few other things that must be done, including some changes on Gmail Settings before Mail and Gmail will be perfectly synchronous. I'll post the entire solution on this forum when I finish the graphics.

  • Gmail & Apple Mail glitch--can't download msgs to two computers?

I have two Mac laptops with two Apple Mail accounts (one is new MacBook Air). When I get a new message in Gmail, it only downloads to whichever computer I open next and does not download to the other. Is there any setting in either Mail or Gmail POP that I can set so that all incoming messages are downloaded to both computers?
    Very much appreciate your help

Yes - in Mail's Account Preferences, under Advanced, untick "Remove copy from server".
Having said that, I strongly urge you to use IMAP for GMail access. Not only will this method not delete mail from the server, you're kept in sync (you only need to check a new message once on one computer; it will be marked as read on the other computer) and you can use server-based folders. You can enable IMAP in your GMail webmail settings (the same place you enabled POP).
