Whats with these huge firmware updates???

So i figured i'd only need 8 gb of space on a iphone so i bought a 8gb, but of course you dont actually get 8 gb you get about 7.2 after the OS and apps that are preinstalled. Then these 250 mb firmware updates come along and now 2 make it 500 mb and were not even on 2.1 yet and i;m thinking gezz when 2.1 comes along i'm gonna only have about 6.8 or 6.5 gb left to use.
Has apple thought maybe we should think about how large these updates really need to be so people can actually enjoy the space left on for media and what not?????
Anyone wanna contribute to this tread???

thanks for clearing that up for me, i wasn't sure if it added or replaced it so that makes much more sense to me now.
Would a 2.1 update though add to the exsisting update or does it do the same thing as a firmware up date and replace the existing one???
as far as i've been told 2.0.? are firmware and 2.? are software update, so does this mean more space added.....
....oh and yes i wish i had bought a 16g but at the time the 16 were really hard to get your hands on and a 8g was available without standing in a long line up.
I'm only hoping in 2 years apple will have 80g iPhones that would be awesome!!!!!

  • What Happened to the Firmware update?

    Hey Everyone-
I downloaded a SMC 1.3 firmware update the other day. (not exactly sure of the name but I think I am close). It stated it was for the fans not working properly. I focused on this (it may had said more) because I have been worried about how hot the top of my keyboard near the Fn keys and the underside mostly where the battery is. It has always checked out OK according to the Apple Store, a few Applecare techs, and the main place I think in TX.
Lately it has been getting real hot and I do not keep it on but I could tell the fans would occasionally go on.
After I installed this update I cannot hear the fans work. i have used it so it gets hot but still no fan noise. At least the noise I use to hear I thought was the fans. I did do the resetting of the SMC (not sure of spelling) stuff it sayid but still can't hear the noise I thought was the fans.
I went to look the next day for the update and it was listed right on the support page but not tonight. It was under the Java updates because the next day I had a Java update pop up in the schedule for software updates.
Would they take the update away? It was there and now it is gone. Not sure what that means. Any opinions?

I have 23000 photos in my iphoto. what is the best way to save these photos and erase them from the
computer so it will run better?

  • Problems with waking after firmware update ...

    Hi ya'll - quick question.
Did the latest firmware update last night and have noticed that waking the computer from sleep has become a problem, maybe once every three times I try to wake it? The backlight visibly turns on and illuminates the black screen, but the password box dosen't ever pop up, leaving me with a plain cursor. I'll try to hit random buttons (not that I think it'll help, but you know) and the 'Funk' sound plays, so I know the computer is working and is on. I have to hold the power button and restart it everytime. Any reason this might be happening now, after the update? It used to every now and then, and had sllooow wake times before the update, the latter of which has been fixed. The update was performed right and completed itself, etc.
    Thanks for any help!

i also have problems waking it up since the efi firmware update! i primarily use the macbook only with an exernal display and wake it up by plugging in the power, lan, display and usb connectors, i.e. quite often, i don't even open the lid. since the firmware update, i regularly get a light blue screen and nothing happens. i then have to restart it through the power button as well.

  • Compability with OSX for firmware updates?

Considering a new phone, and keeping the firmware-update from Asha to Belle in mind, will it be (or is it) possible to install new windows phone firmware on your phone from OSX?
I don't have a Windows OS in the house, and would like to keep it that way on pc-level. But with the news of today I wonder if I should stick to Nokia. (I still like the Symbian)
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Windows Phone OS and firmware updates are always OTA by either mobile data or WiFi.
Getting apps to the phone is done through the webinterface for the store followed by sending the app by either mobile data or WiFi

  • What does the message "Firmware Update Failure. Disk Write Error" mean?

Everytime I try to update my iPod on my computer it tells me that I have to update it before I can transfer songs. I tried another computer and it will update properly and transfer songs just fine. For some reason it does not work on this computer but i've uninstalled everything and tried from scratch. Does anyone know what could be wrong? maybe a usb malfunction?

    Hi,
What kind of computer are you plugging the iPod shuffle into? Is it a Mac or a Windows-based PC? Is it a desktop or a laptop?
Try to connect the iPod shuffle to a different USB port or a different computer and then try to Restore the iPod shuffle with the latest iPod updater.

  • What are benefits of firmware update for LCD TV 46XV645U?

    Hey everyone...
In 2010 I bought a LCD TV 46XV645U, and have never updated the firmware. I see that there is an update from 2011. I am wondering what benefits this update provides. The reason I ask is because my set is working fine and I have heard of firmware updates bricking devices, so I want to make sure it is worthwhile before proceeding.
    Thanks!

If you have an answer to this question would you mind posting it?
I'd love to see some release notes for the formware for this product.
    Thanks!

  • N86 problem with gps after firmware update

J2ME-apps crashes or hangs with external gps after upgrade to firmware 30.009. This worked before the update.
The phone is a N86 RM484 and external GPS is a Globalsat 359.
The apps in question are GC LIve (http://live.geocaching.com/dl) and a homebrewn app.
When using external gps I only have "external gps" activated in "positioning methods". When using internal gps all options EXCEPT external gps are activated.
"OVI Maps", "Google maps" and "GPS status" all work fine with external GPS.
I've tried to reset the phone with three different methods but none fixes the problem. Methods I've tried: *#7780#, *#7370# and the acrobatic 4-button combo.
I'm all out of ideas, and hope someone has a solution. / Richard

    Hi again!
I've used ovi suite to reinstall prior to a reset, and also after a reset. It makes no difference to the problem
What would happen if I wiped the entire built in mass storage (E? There's lots of folders and files there that seems to be untouched regardless of reset method. Could it make things worse?
    Other ideas very welcome!
I'm not at all interested in demo versions of games that come bundled with this phone and all private stuff is backed up.

  • What is the correct firmware update check URL for a Westell VersaLink 327W?

Hi, I was wondering what the correct URL is for the modem to check for updated firmware on the Westell VersaLink 327w. My model is the  D90-327W15-06 and its current firmware is 04.04.03
To clarify, I'm looking for the URL that goes in the box at the top of the upgrade page in the router's advanced settings. That link is a screenshot of what my page currently looks like.
Since I first got this modem 2 or 3 years ago, it has never been able to properly check for updates. I've tried changing the URL to point to the Verizon support page for manually downloading the firmware but that doesn't seem to work either. I'm guessing the URL should point to a specific file, possibly an xml or something? I don't remember what the original address in the box was but it didn't work anyway.
I'm pretty sure I am running the latest version (04.04.03) and manually upgrading isn't a problem if a new version comes out but its always bugged me that the built-in check has never worked right for me so I figured I'd ask on here for the heck of it. At the very least I'd like it to be able to check version information even if it can't upgrade automatically.
Does the built-in firmware check work for anyone else using the 327w or similar model? If so, could you kindly copy/paste the URL on your modem's firmware page? Even if you have a different modem, it might help me figure out the right address for my own. Thanks!

    #1 Go to http://www.verizon.net/central/vzc.portal?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=vzc_help_contentDisplay&linkflag=use...
#2 Make sure that use save as.
#3 After you save the file, go into your router's upgrade screen.
#4 Then use the file that you downloaded earlier to upgrade the router..
If you have any questions as how to do this..
#1 Be sure to take screen shots.
#2 And be sure that you use tinypic.com as your image host.

  • Problems with the E2500 firmware update

I already updated the firmware but all the times there is an interruption in the power electricity supply (and unfortunately we are having too many here ...) I'm loosing the wi-fi signal. When the power electricity is back, the wi-fi network name is not even appearing in the list of available wi-fi.
To restablish the signal I need to take out the power cable for at least 10 seconds and connecting again. It's poping up a Management Mode / Firmware upgrade window and then I need to follow the procedure for the firmware upgrade again. When finishing the process, the wi-fi is available again (I do not need to define anything else, the wi-fi name / password / ... are the same it used to be). sometimes I need to follow this procedure more than once ...
But sometimes is not enough and I need to reset the router, take out the power cable for at least 10 seconds, connecting again ... Interesting to mention tha the wi-fi name / password / ... are already ok (the reset is not affecting such definitions).
But I need to follow nthios procedure two or three times a week due the power electricity issues.
My conclusion is that the firmware upgrade is bringing this issues. What can I do to avoid this problems?

Just to give more information about the comments received and the existing situation:
    - the router was always connected to a surge protector
    - the surge protector was always connected to a voltage stabilizer
In addition I tried all the suggested corrective actions, including downloading again the FW file.
Nothing is solving / changing the situation.
The UPS would be expensive to be installed for a home use.
The warranty is already expired and I'm leaving outside the USA.
I'm lossing too much time to re-established the wi-fi router set up.... Sometimes I  need to try several resets before the Management mode / firmware upgrade windows is poping up.
That seems I'll need to buy a new router. Perhaps I'll need to try a different brand.
If you would have any different approach to betaken, please, let me know.
Thanks all of you for the support provided.
    Regards

  • Problem with N73 after firmware update

Recently I tried to update the firmware on my Nokia n73. Somehow the cable got disconnected and the phone died. I read everything on the topic here and went directly to the nearest NCS. There they repaired my phone and updated the firmware to V3.0638.0.0.30 (everything else shown after *#0000# is: 30-10-2006, RM-133, Nokia N73 (05)). But after that, I noticed that when I press the multimedia button, it opens directly the music player, instead of a list of applications. Also when I hold down the menu button it shows both the standby icon and the music one. My problem is that I mostly use the camera, not the music player, and it seems (to me) that it slows the phone down (especially when going through the image gallery). So I was wondering if anyone can tell me how to close the music player, or at least how to change back the multimedia button to a list of applications. I am using the standard 128mb miniSD. Thanks in advance and cheers from Bulgaria.

  • 2 problems i have with my N82 (Firmware Update, As...

I have one N82 mobile and i was not able to update its firmware. Everytime i try to update (with Nokia Software Updater v1.4.23en) from version 10.0.046 to 11.0.117 is telling me "Updating Software Fail". It regognizes my mobile and it has downloaded the update from nokia server, but everytime i have tryed to update it fails and it is asking me to retry. I have checked the FAQs and i am sure that i have a valid SIM card inserted, Power/Internet connection is not lost during update, i have removed and inserted again a fully charged battery, and the Device is in Normal profile. Can anyone help me please?
Another problem i have is that i couldn't find where to go if i want to assign an mp3 as a ringing tone for a specific person. When i go to "Contacts>i select a contact>Ringing Tone" it gives me only 2 options. "Download Sounds" & "Default tone". Wasn't suppose to be another option for assigning your own songs?
Thanks for any possible help you can give me!

    Hi 123musicv
I had similar problems with NSU v1.4.23en which in my situation was only resolved by un-installing all Nokia applications, cleaning up the registry and re-installing NSU.
Incidentally you can install NSU without PC Suite being present and in this case PC Connectivity Solutions is downloaded at the same time.

  • Can no longer use Transfer to SD card with the new firmware update 23.0.1.A.3.12

I just got the latest update for my Z2. My device now has a firmware 23.0.1.A.3.12.
I encountered a problem. I can no longer transfer photos to SD card thru the Transfer to SD Card under Storage.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

@Thommo. Oh hi, no. This is just a theme I installed to change the buttons recently. The problem was there before I did this change. As proof, here it is again after removing the theme and applying the default theme of Xperia.
Regarding the SD card write capability permissions, I do not know how to do that really. Can you please show me?
Also, all I did this morning was update the firmware my Z2 based on the email I got from Sony Support and an alert from the Update Centre. I used the PC companion which also alerted to be updated before the download of the firmware began, which I did too. After the successful update, the phone restarted and used it normally.
Then until the notif told me that my storage is more than 75% full, and prompted to transfer files, which I do all the time by the way, but this time, this error occured.

  • Performance enhanced with recent os/firmware update: Benchmarks

Hey, Benchmarked my system using xbench before and after the updates in the same conditions and got a 25% improvement! My original score was 54.36, the new one is 67.53. I do not know much about xbench or benchmarking but the user-interface test went from a 23 to a 47 which im guessing is showing they are making the os faster and more able to handle the new intel processors. Has anyone else ran xbench before or after, or just want to post what there getting for there benchmarking scores. The program xbench is free and can be found here www.xbench.com

They will never issue a rollback to the previous version of the Android OS.

  • Need help with DVD model/Firmware update info

I am sorry to post here but have found no other way to try and get help or information about a Toshiba, (supposedly) slim style internal DVDRW unit, TS-632H, for our computer.  The label on the unit says Toshiba Samsung, and the complete number on the label is Tsst corp CDDVDW TS-632-H. (This is what is also shows in Device Manager/Properties for the unit.  We are trying to find the (real) model of this unit so we can determine the firmware version to make sure we have the latest version on the unit and to see if there are any specific drivers for the unit.  Thank you for your help and again, sorry if this may be the wrong forum and maybe directing us to an appropriate forum would be appreciated if there is such one.  Thank you.

The information you see in the Device Manager is correct. If you can furnish the full model# be of great assistance.  There, try this-- Free Download TSST DVD Drive Firmware for Toshiba Notebooks  You should be concerned that the driver is up to date as it more of an asset to you.
