Wheel Sensitivity

I was wondering if there was a way to change the sensitivity on the touch wheel for the Classic. My iPod does not respond when I am trying to circle the wheel through my case. Also, without the case I kind of have to press firmly to rotate sometimes leading to an actual button click. Any suggestions?

The wheel works by the electrical capacitance from your finger (that's why it won't work if you use something like a pen on it). If the case is preventing the wheel from sensing this, you need to find another case. There's no way to adjust the sensitivity, but you could try this.
iPod wheel is unresponsive after waking from sleep.
Also, I believe that the latest software update addressed an issue of wheel sensitivity. Not sure though as I never had this issue. Is the iPod software up to date?

  • How to Adjust Touch Wheel Sensitivity

My 80 Gb iPod touch wheel is too sensitive. Once a menu item is selected, selection often moves above or below selected item when moving finger to ENTER position. Has been this way since purchase. Recent comparison to another iPod confirms that mine is much more sensitive. Have tried clear protective screen/wheel cover which doesn't help. Is there a menu selection/option to adjust touch wheel sensitivity? Any help would be much appreciated.

No. There is no option to adjust the Click Wheel
touchiness. But, I agree that the new iPod Click
Wheels are very touchy. That would be a very nice
    addition but very doubtful.

  • 120GB iPod Classic Wheel Sensitivity

I bought a 120GB iPod Classic from Best Buy in January and I find the click wheel sensitivity is really, really bad. As in, I have to press the center button in order to scroll most of the time. If that doesn't work, I have to flip the hold switch so it'll work. Even when it does work, the movement is incredibly choppy (you can imagine how annoying this is when I'm trying to fix the volume).
Is this normal or will Apple be able to do something since it's still under its one year warranty? I'm just really frustrated that I dropped $280 dollars on something that doesn't even work well.

I'm having the same problem with a brand new Nano. If that's the way the "new" iPods are working, it's completely unacceptable! Mine hangs up and even pressing the buttons does little to help it because I end up pressing them 5-10 times before anything will happen. I've sent an inquiry to the support team, so it'll be interesting to see what they recommend. I'll re-post if I receive any useful info about it.

  • 160 GB Click Wheel Sensitivity

It seems like my new 160 GB Click wheel isn't as sensitive as my 80 GB was. Is anyone else having this problem? On my 80 GB I would barely touch it and it would scroll but on the 160 you have to keep your finger still for a couple seconds and then turn it and apply a little more pressure. Thanks for the help.

i am also having this same problem however with the 80gb ipod classic, i used to have an 80gb ipod video, i now have the 80gb classic and the click wheel hardly works compared to the old one, also it does not pick anything up throught ipod socks, unlike the video where it picked up every tiny movement, also when scrolling through menus it sometimes stops or never even starts. applying pressure to the click wheel does help but avoiding pressing the buttons while applying pressure is difficult and not pratical while on the move, the only advice i can give from experience is press on it harder and just hope that apple come through with the new firm ware sooner rather than later which will hopefully improve sensitivity. if anyone has any other solutions to get the click wheel working better than it is now i would be grateful. cheers.

  • Wheel sensitivity :: pls help, thanks!

    Hi all,
Just got my first ipod prdt (nano) 2days ago. Im just wondering how sensitive shd the wheel be? is there anyway to adjust its sensitivity? for now, i feel its a little insensitive/sticky at times, but i do not know if i did not press hard enough while turning or is it meant to be just a little insensitive?
    Please help. thanks in advance!

from what I understood about the wheel, is after you reset the ipod or wake it from deep sleep(where you see apple logo) and you use the wheel fast or slow thats when it calibrates. Dont quote me on it.
Try resetting the ipod(hold Menu + select till apple comes up) and run you finger around the wheel real slow. The reaction of the wheel will be slow then. Reset it agian and run it real fast. For better reaction, you might have to warm your finger a little before using the wheel.

  • IPod Click Wheel Sensitivity

I just got a 5g iPod, and I noticed that the scroll wheel is less sensitive than the previous iPod I owned. Is this a defect, or is this normal?
It's quite annoying, sometimes I have to click a button, and then scroll. Otherwise the wheel just ignores my finger. And sometimes when it works, it seems like I have to actually push against the wheel to make it respond.

Doesn't sound normal to me. Is the iPod software up to date? Have you tried restoring the iPod (which will bring it up to date)?
See: How to restore the iPod to factory settings.

  • IPod Classic' Click Wheel Sensitivity

I just got iPod Classic 80Gb. The click wheel is so bad. Sometimes it doesn't work. I have read in this forum about this issue and found a lot of people also have this issue. I was thinking to exchange with the new one because I still have the warranty. Do you think I just wait for the firmwire fixes it or just exchange it. Is it possible to exchange with this issue? I had iPod Video 30Gb 5th generation and it was a lot easier to adjust with the click wheel.
    Thanks,

That may work for some, but for me it is the opoposite. If my fingers are too dry (I tend to have very dry skin) I need to add a little oil or just a lick of my finger in order to get the wheel to respond better. Yes, I have the latest firmware.
So if the above cleaning does not work for you, try the opposite - add a bit of moisture to your finger.

Additionally I suppose (not sure though) that the technology behind a click wheel is similar to that behind the laptops' touchpads or trackpads. Advices like those below work for me:
    http://tech.yahoo.com/gd/cleaning-your-laptop-s-touchpad/153160
*Carefully clean finger oils and dirt from your laptop's touchpad with a damp cloth; you can also add a small amount - less than 50 percent of the solution - of isopropyl alcohol.
Touchpads are sealed, so you probably don't have to worry about a touchpad problem developing because of dirt or dust. Touchpads can become slippery or sticky from the transfer of oils or other substances from the fingers of those troublesome humans who use them, though")

  • Why Is The New Click Wheel TERRIBLE?

What happened to the flawless design of the click wheel on all previous ipod models.
The new click wheel on the iPod classic is absolutely terrible. It is unresponsive, highly unsensitive, slow and works maybe half the time especially when scrolling counterclockwise.
APPLE, Why the sudden change? I can't even control it through my jeans anymore.
Before you ask any questions, no I am not using any case, my iPod is naked and brand new. Any other iPod I have owned was super responsive and had perfect click wheel sensitivity and worked through my jeans or any case it was in.
I am very unhappy with the new click wheel. Who else is with me?

Well, if it is a defect, which I think it is, it is very common. I'm on my third 120 GB classic. First one had a buku of issues with skipping songs, shutting itself off etc., but the click-wheel was flawless.
Sent that one back to apple, received replacement which had same skipping and restart issues with the added joy of the click-wheel laziness you are describing. Sent that one back, got third unit yesterday, also installed new version of software. Skipping issues and restarts seem to have gone away, but having problems with this click wheel. I'm giving it a couple weeks, and I'll send this one back too. When listening to music, it's not that big of a deal when the wheel goes to sleep and I've got to click it back into action, but while trying to play games it becomes very problematic and unacceptable.
I bought my first ipod second hand and loved it. This is my first new iPod, and it's killing me with aggravation. I have heard before that you should wait until 90 days after any apple release so they can work the bugs out. Seems to hold very true with this experience.

  • Apple mouse scrolling is too sensitive in Yosemite

I've use a wired USB Apple mouse with scroll ball (A1152) on my iMac 27", and since upgrading to Yosemite, the mouse scrolling has been way too sensitive and doesn't allow any fine adjustment of scrolling speed/acceleration in system preferences. In the Mouse preference pane, the 1st position on the Scrolling slider is way too slow–a full scroll of the bar down moves about 1/4 of a full webpage at native resolution with very slow acceleration. The 2nd slider position is not any faster than the 1st. The 3rd slider position accelerates way, way faster, and scrolls a distance of about 8 full pages using a moderate flick of the scroll ball. At this high sensitivity, I need to scroll fairly carefully to move only one page. In a finder window with 500 items, it accelerates fast enough to move from top of the list to the bottom with less than one full finger swipe of the ball at moderate speed. Any setting from 3-8 on the Scrolling slider is the same speed and acceleration and is way too fast to use in a well-controlled manner. The behavior system-wide and is the same in any browser (Safari, Firefox, Chrome). This is nothing like how it behaved in OS X Lion through Mavericks over the past four years. Also, I can set the scrolling slide to the 3rd position, close system preferences, and go back in to find that it has set itself to the 2nd position, but the scrolling behavior is that of the 3rd position until I move the slider again.
I've trashed some .plist files from ~/Library/Preferences/ that I thought would reset things (com.apple.driver.AppleHIDMouse.plist and others) upon logout/login, but the behavior persists. I've tried a few pieces of software to try to override mouse settings, and while they will affect the mouse tracking speed and acceleration, they don't work well at controlling the scroll speed. I've reset the PRAM and SMC. I've created a new user account. Nothing has allowed usable adjustment of scroll speed/acceleration of the Apple mouse.
Any suggestions on how I can regain in Yosemite the usable adjustment of scroll speed/acceleration that were in all previous OS versions would be appreciated.

Try setting the scroll wheel scaling manually, by running the following command in the Terminal and then logging out and then back in to re-load the settings:
defaults write -g com.apple.scrollwheel.scaling -float VALUE
In this case, try values of 1, 0.5, 0.25, etc, decreasing in half each time to see how the scroll wheel sensitivity responds, and then use the one that works best. Alternatively, you can use the system preferences to set the sensitivity to the two values you have used so far, followed by running the following command between each to see what the value is for each:
    defaults read -g com.apple.scrollwheel.scaling
Then you can determine some intermediate value to use, and use the first command above to set it to that value (again followed by logging out and then back in so the value will load).

  • Firmware 1.0.3. = Dysfunctional Nano

    Hello Everyone,
Upgraded to version 1.0.3 on my 1 month old 8gig Nano this morning... the results were rather poor. Battery no longer charges when plugged into the USB, and it resets automatically once it's disconnected from my Powerbook G4. Running the latest versions of iTunes and OSX, reset and reinstalled everything that Support recommends.
So far it seems that this is just one of the problems with 1.0.3, as others are already 'popping up' on other forums. If your previous version of firmware is working fine for you, I would NOT recommend upgrading to 1.0.3.
Looks like it's back to the store for a refund. Too bad...
    Al

I think I agree with you. Maybe not with the click wheel sensitivity, but there's a general feel of sluggishness with 1.0.3.
I think it might be something not releasing resources / CPU quickly: most obvious manifestation is that the scrolling song title in the "now playing" screen slows down, but I can easily demonstrate it by the effect on the right-side of menus:
    1) Start with a "sleeping" iPod (hold Play/Pause to turn off)
    2) Hit Play/Pause to turn on.
    3) Hold MENU to return to the main menu
    4) Note the right-side of the menu behaves as expected: nice panning photos / album art / clock etc
    5) Now start playing a video
    6) Hold MENU to return to the main menu
    7) Note the right-side of the menu is now a blank(ish) grey background, no matter what option you've selected
    8) Depending on how lucky you are, either the normal floating-pictures will re-appear on their own or you'll have to do something like start a tune playing and then going back to the menu to restore expected function.
I should also note that the iPod feels slower to start/stop using the PLAY/PAUSE button too.
In summary: I don't think they've adjusted anything with the Click Wheel itself, but since the Nano is generally feeling sluggish, the effects of using it make it act too sensitive....
[Just a theory, just a theory....]

  • Keyboard issue with cursor jumping to point on the page when typing

When I type on my notebook keyboard (HP Pavilion dv6-6167cl) it frequently jumps somewhere else in the area where I previously typed causing me to stop and correct what it did and move back to where I intended to type.  I have the latest driver for my Synaptics Touchpad driver already.  Any idea why this happens.  This is my second laptop, different manufacturers where I've had this same problem so I'm beginning to think it's a common issue with notebooks.  Any suggestions?  Thanks.

    tdunnusa,
It may be inherent to the way in which you use the devices (keyboard and Touch/ClickPad).  Maybe not ... the drivers are not perfect.  We can all attest to adventures with Clickpad mystery entries..
Depending on the level of touch sensitivity (located under Pointing)
AND the level in the PalmCheck-Enhanced ACM setting, things can get a bit weird;  even touching the surface lightly can set the mouse cursor off course.
    Consider / try the following:
In your Synaptics Settings > Properties,
    Open the Pointing section,
Click on Sensitivity (to highlight) >> click on Spikey blue wheel (Sensitivity settings) >
Set the sensitivity level way over to the right side (Less sensitive)
    Apply
    Next:
Click to Open PalmCheck-Enhanced ACM  >> click on Spikey blue wheel (settings)
Slide the PalmCheck over to the RIGHT to Max
    Apply
Youcan adjust the Advanced filter zone - that is, control where  you can use the TouchPad for certain gestures and how long it takes for the zone to activate.   This can help for particular kinds of gestures, though it won't help for accidentally contact like brushing the surface with the palm of your hand.
These settings, when set to maximum, are likely too extreme - they may give you an idea whether the issue is related to how you are using the TouchPad.
    Kind Regards,

  • N78 transitions broken since update

According to the changelog of what issues the firmware update was meant to fix, display colour corruption was one of them. I didn't even have this to begin with, but now I do! Before the update when the camera key was held, the screen's orientation would visibly flip to the side, but now it just goes blank for a moment instead
It's the same when the browser screen is rotated, and the "gliding" effect of the selection square in the apps menu has gone too.
Not to mention since they've "tweaked" the sensitivity of the navi-wheel it's next to useless. Ugh.
Has anyone else had these problems since the update?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Well I feel stupid! I was checking through the themes/settings menus etc. but couldn't find the option for transitions, now I see they're called "Theme effects". Thank you once again psychomania
(that said I'm still not happy with the decreased Navi-wheel sensitivity!)

  • Avid Artist Transport Misbehaving

I've submitted a support request to Avid, but just cross-checking here in case anyone has run into the problem and found a solution.
When I run the jog/shuttle on either the Avid Artist Control or the MC Transport, the cursor advances in approx 1-minute increments, instead of frame-by-frame. So of course it's useless.
Randomly, the MC Transport jogs as it should, but it won't scrub sound.
Adjusting wheel sensitivity in EuControl makes no difference.
In any event, all firmware is up to date, EuControl is up to date.
    I'm using cs6, OS 10.8.2

Check http://www.roaringapps.com/ for your Avid software to see if they mention its compatibility with your operating system.  If not, please ask Avid for support.

  • How do I adjust SUPER-sensitive click-wheel???  It's driving me nuts!

How do I adjust SUPER-sensitive click-wheel??? It's driving me nuts! There has to be a way to tone it down. I didn't see anything in the settings or on iTunes with it plugged in. I've compared it to many others and mine is horrible. I can't even click any of the function buttons without the click-wheel operation spinning. PLEASE HELP! Thanks a million. (3rd Gen Nano)

  • Click wheel not sensitive in one spot

This may sound funny, and maybe I'm just not getting it, but it appears that my click wheel has no sensitivity one one spot. For example, when I scroll through songs, as I go around the wheel, there is one spot where it stops and then when I move past it, it goes again. I've noticed that when you put your finger on the wheel, a scroll bar appears, and if I put my finger on the spot, nothing happens, like it can't tell my finger is there. I just exchanged my iPod and noticed the same thing on the one I just changed. Is this a common problem on iPod classics?

There seems to be no sensitivity problem with the location you're describing on my click wheel. Try to reset your iPod and see if that works. Take it to an Apple store for support it all else fails.
