When ACD 30" monitor gets hot, kernel_task utilizes all CPU on Mac Book Air

I've been having a problem with my system slowing down due to the system "kernel_task" taking over all available CPU (up to 150% of a CPU on my dual core Mac Book Air). I've figured out some of the parameters of the problem, and it seems related to having the Air hooked up to an external monitor:
1) It seems to only happen when the Air is attached to an external monitor, which in my case is a 30" Cinema Display (which is through a Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter -- not sure if this is relevant)
2) It only happens when the monitor itself is physically warm to the touch (actually the back gets quite hot).
3) When the kernel_task takes over, and I unplug the Air from the DVI Adapter, kernel_task usually settles down (to 5 - 10% CPU utilization) within 30 - 60 seconds
4) If I plug the Air back into the DVI adapter at this point (while the monitor is still warm), kernel_task CPU utilization immediately jumps up to 130 - 150%.
5) If I wait until the monitor is cool before plugging the Air back into the DVI adapter, kernel_task stays in the normal 2 - 10% CPU utilization range for 30 - 90 minutes and the process starts all over again (at this point the monitor is usually quite warm / hot again)
Rebooting doesn't seem to help (if the monitor is hot, kernel_task starts hogging the CPU right after booting up).
Has anyone experienced a similar problem? Any thoughts about possible remedies, or ways to further isolate the problem?
I appreciate your reading this somewhat bizarre tale of woe.
Thanks,
Marc

After upgrading to 10.5.7 this week my MacBook Air goes into kernel_task spin-mode within minutes even when the machine is idle. There are many discussions about this, the longest of which is here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9458471&#9458471

  • HT5219 Can I use 2 displays when I connect a 1920x1080 display through Thunderbolt to the 27 cinema display when it´s connected to the all new 13" Mac Book Air with thunderbolt?

Can I use 2 displays when I connect a 1920x1080 display through Thunderbolt to the 27 cinema display when it´s connected to the all new 13" Mac Book Air with thunderbolt?

Thank you, I have read that I could daisy chain the HD RAID enclosure on one of the thunderbolt ports with another monitor, if the monitor were at the end of the chain, but I do not know if the other port would still simultaneously support yet another external display at the same time.

  • How do I get a video signal to an external monitor via the mini-display port on my Mac Book Air?

I can't get a video signal out through my mini-display port on my Mac Book Air (version 1).  Thus I can't feed BBC iPlayer to an external monitor.  There is some connectivity - the MAC wallpaper is broadcast, the mouse pointer is visible and sound is transferred.  Is it likely to be a cable connection problem (though the cable works with a Windows operating laptop)?

First, what you said is contradictory. You say "can't get a video signal", then say"the Mac wallpaper is broadcast, the mouse pointer is visible". "No video signal" means an absolutely black, blank screen. It sounds like you have plenty of signal.
I am supposing what you are seeing is actually a blank desktop, which is to be expected if your settings are such that you are extending the desktop, instead of mirroring it.
Within the preference panes is a setting that allows you to change this. Open System Preferences, click Displays, and then click Arrangement. You will see that you are extending the desktop. Change that setting.

  • Why did I get a free numbers app on my mac book air but not on my imac?

I got a free download of numbers on my mac book air but not on my imac. Why is this?

    Hi Pamela,
If it was free on your Air it should be free on your iMac too.  Perhaps you should doublecheck that:
Your iMac is running Mavericks (the version of Numbers available for download from the App Store requires Mavericks)
Your iMac is signed into the same App Store ID (usually, but not always, the same as the Apple ID you use to connect to iCloud) as your Air.

  • Getting an error when setting up Apple ID on new Mac book air

I am setting up new Mac book air and getting an error at the sign up with Apple ID. Says couldn't sign in because of a server error. Try signing in again

I got this error when setting up a new iMac. I now beleive the reason was that I had already restored accounts and files from a Time Machine backup, and it then connected me to the Apple ID during the login. It is a flaw in the setup process that it didn't check for that and skip the Apple ID step.

  • I have a mac book air 11". When I boot up connected to the huge Thunderbolt  screen it detects the detects the fact and gives me great quality. now I am travelling away from the scree it boots up, nice picture, then switches to rubbish resolution.

I have a Mac Book air 11". Normally at home I connect this to a large Thuderbolt Screen. When booting up it some times gets confused and offers me a low resolution result, but some plugging and unplugging of the screen fixes this. I assume it sometimes "sees" the big screen and sets the resolition accordingly. Sometimes does not. But now... I am away from big screen and cannot get the Macbook air on its one to deliver anything other than really poor resolution. I ahve done displays and chosen all three - but no better. And I have said Choose the Best ONe... again not luck. Any ideas. I read in back posts this was a problem a few years ago.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
I believe you have a failing GPU (aka Video Card). Run AHT and see what it tells you. Do not be afraid to run it up to three times in succession if at first it does not detect an error (sometimes errors that are caused by overheating will not show up until the computer is stressed enough - repeating AHT will do that).
As an aside - the MBA was not designed to take the place of a desktop. If you are powering your MBA by leaving it permanently attached to the thunderbolt port on the monitor you are shortening your battery life.

  • Why my mac book air warms up more and more often, more and more hot

Why my mac book air warms up more and more often, and more and more hot

I have this problem too when I use heavy applications like big intense games. When you use this, a lot of memory and CPU space is taken up. This causes the fan to spaz out. The fan tries to cool it off, which in turn makes an awkward loud noise. If it makes noise/and/or gets loud, go to "Activity Moniter" and see if anything is taking up a large amount of CPU %. If anything is 30%-70%, that a lot. Earlier, I transfered 2,400 pictures from my iPod to my Air, and it went crazy. Within like 3 minutes of it transferring, it got hot. I looked at the CPU %, and it was anywhere from 80%-somehow like 230%. Anything like games or apps or a lot of internet browsers can warm it up. One other huge thing that can cause this is airflow. If you operate it on like a pillow or something soft and/or somewhere with low airflow/circulation, your computer will get hot. So, either use it in your lap or on something like a table, and try not to overwork the computer. If neither of these things help, bring it in to the Apple store. I hope this helped! Good luck!

how do i get more memory on my mac book air? is says that i can add 2 more gig ??? or wat files can i delete

Macbook Air memory is soldered to the logicboard.
You can only get 4GB or 8GB (2012 Models) in the Air when you order it that way.  Otherwise, you're stuck with 2GB.
Unless you're talking about hard drive space - then it is upgradeable - click HERE to see which one corresponds to your model.

  • Why can't I get Back To My Mac to work in both directions between my 2011 Mac Book Air and my 2012 Mac Mini?

Why can't I get Back To My Mac to work in both directions between my 2011 Mac Book Air and my 2012 Mac Mini? The network uses a Time Capsule. Everything works when connecting from the Mini to the Air, but the reverse is not the case, none of the Mini's drives are visible, and the screen sharing option is not available. I've tried the measures already suggested in online articles, everything seems to be configured correctly using my iCloud account. I'm at a loss, any suggestions would be appreciated.

I've now managed to get the service running in both directions, but not in the way I had anticipated. I had to create a second account on the Mac Book Air, this also has administrator privilages, everything works fine when connecting from this acccount. However, this is not the way I would expect to work, none of my documents, applications and settings would be available, unless I laboriously duplicated them to the new account.
Also, I've yet to get the service running from outside my home network.

  • For college/grad school should i get ipad 3 or mac book air?

for college/grad school should i get ipad 3 or mac book air?

Nobody can tell you which one is best for you, it's a personal preference. However, here are a few factors you might want to take into consideration:
1-They're two different devices that serve different purposes. The way you take notes in an iPad is different than the way you would on a MBA. On the iPad, with apps like Evernote and Notability you can take more complete notes than with a MBA. You have the option to have audio notes, write with a Stylus, make diagrams by hand to explain/relate concepts easily. With the external keyboard (for that I'd recommend using the Apple Wireless Keyboard with the InCase Origami Workstation) you could type just as fast as you would on a MBA and format the text just like you would on the MBA. However, for bigger (possibly partner) papers, the MBA would help you. You could start the paper on the iPad without any issues (using Pages or even Evernote) but you'd need a laptop/computer to finalize the project.
2-Portability wise, they're both incredibly light. The iPad is somewhat smaller = lighter but with the keyboard they're about the same. The fact that with the ipad + keyboard combo you can take out the keyboard only when you need it, for me, is an advantage be ause when I don't want to use it, it's not in the way. For others, it's a disadvantage because you have to carry two items instead of one.
3-MBA let's you access all websites and most file types. If one of your classes requires you to go to the Browser and see a Flash enabled page, the iPad would not be of much help. Same goes for any programs you might need to install. On the MBA you'll most likely be able to do so. On the iPad, chances are there won't be an app for that.
4-Aonce you already have a MBP, I'd go for the iPad. If/when the iPad falls short(because of the limitations mentioned above) you can use the laptop. And in the mean time, use the iPad for everything else. That way you get the best of both worlds. You'd only need to take the MBP when you know you'll need it and wont have to carry that weight all the time.
6-Studying (reading, highlighting, annotating) is easier and more intuitive on the iPad. The iPad is great for reading, combine that with the fact that you can leave comments/notes just like you would on a physical piece of paper, and you've got the best way to learn IMO.

You can, but how are you going to back up those other files?  When (not if) your Time Capsule fails, you risk losing them.  See #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule for details.
Then can i access these files only on the time capsule without connecting it?
Not sure what you mean.  You have to connect a computer, either via Ethernet cable or wirelessly, to read or write to the disk.
