When adding an external hard drive, should you connect it directly to your iMac or to your Apple Extreme router?
That depends on what you are using it for. The advantage of connecting it to the router is that you can share the drive over your home network and/or over the Internet. That can be convenient but drive access is performed at network speed - slower than when connected directly to the computer. If you need/want to share the drive, connect it to the router, otherwise connect it directly to the computer.

What are you actually trying to accomplish? Backing up the library, or moving it?
If backing up don't delete anything.
If moving did you move the library files as well? Ideally you would copy the entire iTunes folder out to the external drive then shift-start iTunes to connect to the relocated library. This method makes it easier to move the library to a new drive or computer later and keeps everything together for backing up. Rather than delete everything rename the iTunes or iTunes Media folder first (depending on which approach you took) and make sure the library still works before deleting.

What external hard drive to you recommend to free up space on an old Macbook Pro?
My Macbook Pro is approx. 5 years old. I have since gotten an imac, however would like to use my old Creative Suite 2 on the macbook. When I updated it to "Lion" - it denied access to my creative suite apps. I have since contacted Adobe, and they have given me a solution to get it up and running again, however, my startup disk is just about FULL. Therefore I can't upgrade or really even open more than one app without getting the warning pop up about getting rid of some files asap or risk malfunction of the laptop.
What external hard drive do you recommend to get the most bang for my buck in terms of offloading a massive amount of photos to in order to be able to use the laptop again?Your picture folder would have to be 10 times larger and then it would be close to 1 TB in size. I have an aphorism, 'one cannot have too much storage'. If the bank account can afford it, follow Ralph's advice and do go for the larger storage drive. Given enough time, you might just grow into it..
Now there is an issue that you should consider. Since these pictures will no longer be on your MBP, do you want to have them backed up? If so, you then are going to need an additional HDD to store the backups. All HDDs will eventually fail, you just do not know when.

What size external hard drive should I purchase? I'm not tech savvy, so please speak slowly. I'm looking at OWC Mini Stack Classic to match my older Mac Mini. Do I need 500 GB, 1 TB or more? Plus, I have to add memory to upgrade to Snow Leopard. How much memory do I need and should I have an expert install it ?

In my mini configs - both older and newer flatter model - I have kept their ministack external drive on top of the mini; with 3 or 4 little rubber feet added to the mini's base to give it a bit more elevation from the surface they are sitting on and a bit better chance to breathe. I'm not impressed by the very small air intakes on the bottom and the hot air that often comes out the back or how warm the case feels. Especially in the heat of summer.
I do turn the ministacks on/off as needed (primarily for backups once a week) as they're not entirely quiet and sometimes seem to have a low hum vibration. Nothing crazy. I just like it as dead quiet as possible sometimes. Plus the fan does not turn off even if the mini and ministack drive have shut down. The newer wide & slim model does seem a bit quieter than the older model.
Check through system profiler to see if your system has 2x1GB or 1x2GB. Most likely it is 2x1GB and you'd need to remove both to double your ram. On the off chance it has a free slot; a single 2GB stick would get you to 4GB. Check on the cost difference between the 2x2GB kit and a 2x4GB kit. I have an older core duo mini that functions fine with 2x2GB of RAM and 10.6.8. But, if you plan to continue to use the mini for several more years as a primary machine including upgrading the OS to Yosemite; it might not be a bad idea to just max it to 2x4 8GB. Yosemite really likes RAM to maximize performance.
Along the lines of keeping the same mini and doing upgrades. The biggest speed improvements are made by replacing the original internal hard drive with a flash drive. Of course this is a more technical upgrade, you really need to take the mini apart more and you have to weigh the cost of the upgrades and possibly paying somebody to do them; vs the cost of a newer system which would have a significantly faster processor and other improvements. -

I have a WD my book external hard drive plugged into my imac and I want to share it over my network with my apple tv. I went into system preferences > sharing, checked "file sharing" and added my external hard drive to the shared folder. So now it is listed in "shared folders" but under "users" everything is grayed out (it says "read and write" for "everyone" - but "read and write" is grayed out, and it doesn't let me add or subtract users). Now I can access all of the folders I shared from my imac except for the externalhard drive. I know there are some action scripts, am i right?Ok, here are the steps to take. Doing this involves generating two scripts, the first of which will have the system monitor the attachment of a hard drive, and the second which will conditionally open iPhoto. To make these and set them up, perform the following steps (it is a little involved, but will get you the result you want):
Script 1: A launch agent to monitor attached hard drives
1. Open the Terminal utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder. Then copy and paste the following command into it and press Enter, which will open up an editor program in the Terminal:
pico ~/Library/LaunchAgents/iphotodrive.plist
2. Now copy and paste the following text to the Terminal window in its entirety so it is all entered into the Terminal editor:

3. Use the arrow keys to navigate your cursor down to the place where it says /Users/USERNAME/Library..., and change the text of "USERNAME" to be the same name as your account home folder. For example, my login name in OS X is "tkessler" so my home folder is also "tkessler," so for me this is what should go in place of "USERNAME" in the text above.
4. Now press Control-O to save the file, and then Control-X to exit the editor (use Control, and not the standard Command key here).
Script 2: A shell script to open iPhoto when your drive is attached
1. Type (or copy and paste) the following command in the same Terminal window to make the second script in the same editor:
pico ~/Library/iphotodrive.sh
2. Now copy and paste the following text into the Terminal editor:

if [ -d /Volumes/"IPHOTODRIVE" ]; then
open -a iPhoto;
fi
3. Again use the arrow keys to navigate, and edit the text IPHOTODRIVE to be the exact name of the drive you would like to spur iPhoto to open. The name will be case-sensitive, and spaces are OK within the quotes.
4. Again save this file by pressing Control-O, then press Control-X to quit the editor.
5. Next ensure this new script can be run, so to do this now copy and paste the following command:
chmod +x ~/Library/iphotodrive.sh
Now to activate these scripts you can log out of your account and log back in, and they should work as expeted, and will launch iPhoto only when a drive named "IPHOTODRIVE" (or whatever you edited this entry to be) is attached to the system. This procedure will create two files at the following locations on your computer, so to undo it simply remove these two files followed by logging out and back in, and you should be good to go:
/Users/USERNAME/Library/iphotodrive.sh
/Users/USERNAME/Library/LaunchAgents/iphotodrive.plist
If you run into any problems, then write back here and we can figure out if there are any nuance details to cover for your setup. -
I am going to upgrade to Lion. First have to back up computer. What external hard drives should I buy in order to use time machine. I have a 320 GB hard drive. Don't have too much on computer.

Buy an external drive 320G or larger (much larger is preferable). I do not recommend you use TM for this, instead download a copy of Carbon Copy Cloner and make a clone of your drive. Once this is done you have 2 choices, you can download and install Lion on your internal drive just as you planned or download and install Lion to the external clone, the 2nd method allows you to test the Lion install before committing to it. If the clone with Lion is to your liking then just clone it back to the internal. -

I have a Macbook pro 13" A1278. I purchased it around december 2010. I have a HHD 3.5" drive desktop select II 1.5TB. I purchased it around Febuary/March 2011 to use with my Macbook pro. Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo. Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears. You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore. Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset. From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab. Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup. You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod. Again, say "yes." -

So I have collected so much music and movies in iTunes that my internal HD is practically full. (Library is over 500GB of 1TB and the rest is taken up with my apps and programs.) It's time to purchase an external hard drive to transfer my library to. Furthermore, I currently have a 2TB WD My Book for Mac that I am currently using for backup. The My Book is also full and Time Machine is deleting the oldest backups to make room for the current ones.
Here is where I need everyones advice. I am planning on purchasing a 3TB WD My Book for Mac. I am planning on purchasing more movies for iTunes. Which external hard drive should I use for what? Option A or B
Option A: Put my iTunes library on the 2TB external hard drive and use the 3TB for backup
Option B: Put my iTunes library on the 3TB external hard drive and continue to use the 2TB for backup

I am getting a brand new iMac this month and was wondering what is the process of using this back up to restore my new computer exactly how my old computer was? When you turn on the new iMac for the first time, Setup Assistant will ask you to restore a backup, so connect the external disk and follow steps to restore all your files to your new iMac. Your new Mac will have the same settings and programs as your old computer.
In other cases, I would recommend to restore the whole backup without using Migration Assistant or Setup Assistant, but a Late 2012 iMac uses a special OS X build, so the OS X version that you're using on your old Mac won't work on the new one. I have photos on an external hard drive. When I try to import them to iphotos they appear as a thumbnail (?), small in size. How is the photo restored to its original image. If I try to print, it comes out pixelated. I have many photos on hard drive and would like to restore to original size. Using Leopard OS
and the only time I see the pixellation problem is when the original photo's file size is small.
What did you expect? Of course if the file size is small it won't print well. There isn't enough data to create a reasonable quality print.
Web Photos are - typically - very heavily compressed to speed up downloading. I've seen Facebook photos - for instance - lose 90% of their file size after being "processed". There is no way that a 20kb file is going to print well at any size greater than a postage stamp.
So, basically, the problem you have is the photos you are importing, I'm afriad.

Lost file associations when disconnecting/reconnecting external hard drive
Dear iTunes pros,
I have a question that I haven't been able to find an answer to despite searching various forums.
I used to have all my music in the iTunes Music folder on my local drive. But some time ago I added to the iTunes library a lot of music that I had on my external hard drive - importantly, when adding it, I did not choose the consolidate library option as 1) I don't have enough space on C:\ to move all that music from the external hard drive to the iTunes Music folder on C: 2) for that particular collection I wanted to keep my original folder structure and not have it rearranged by iTunes according to the standard artist/album/file format.
Everything was well until I disconnected the external drive and reconnected it again. Now iTunes cannot play any of the files that I have on the external drive -- I get an exclamation point next to each one saying that the original file cannot be found.
This would be normal if I tried to play these files with the hard drive disconnected -- obviously then iTunes cannot locate the files as they are not there on the system.
But once I have reconnected the external hard drive, shouldn't the cross-references in the iTunes library files work correctly again? I have not changed anything with the files, the paths remain correct, so why can't iTunes see the files? (Let me add that there is nothing wrong with the hard drive -- I can easily play the files with other players - or even with iTunes! - if I simply go to their location on the external drive and double-click on them)
How do I get my file associations back? Let me add that I don't want to consolidate my library at this moment.
I hope there is an easy way to do this as obviously manually reconnecting several thousand library entries to files is not an option.
I will be immensely grateful for any ideas.My guess is that the drive letter to your external drive has changed. This can happen with Windows if you don't affix it to a specific letter permanently. Try this:
1- Check to see what letter Windows currently has assigned to your external drive. Next you need to check to see what iTunes thinks the letter should be. If you know that the drive letter changed and remember what it was, skip step #2 & 3.
2- Locate your "iTunes Library.xml" file and make a copy. Open the copy with Excel if you have it, Internet Explorer can also open it.
3- Look for an entry like "file://localhost/E:/My%20Music ..." In this example iTunes knows my files are on my E:/ drive. Close the copy of the .xml file.
4- If iTunes and Windows are reporting different letters then you need to tell Windows what the letter should be. Go to Windows Disk Management and assign the letter that iTunes last used for the drive. I believe there is an option to make the letter permanent.
5- Open iTunes and you should be good to go.
