When adding fonts where SHOULD they be placed

It seems that fonts can be added to the two font folders as well as Font Book. I like to keep related items together, but fonts in the system library cannot (?) be put into font book, and if fonts are added to the system library what good is Font Book? Also what fonts are necessary in the system font list? It seems that the foreign language files could be deleted - or not?

Every font in system font is necessary, that's why they are in system font.
For managing fonts, just use font book, and let the system fonts as they are. Font book also just handels the Library Font and Personal Font folder.

Adding Fonts Where?

What is the difference between the fonts located in Library>Fonts and System>Library>Fonts? (why are there two locations, and what's the difference?) I'd like to add some fonts that come up as missing when I load documents created in Classic but am unsure where they get added -- do they go in one of the above, or both?

System/Library/Fonts - Fonts vital to the OS, do not touch.
/Library/Fonts - Fonts that can be be used by all Users.
Users/shortname/Library/Fonts - Fonts that can be used by particular user i.e If user is Paul, only Paul can use those fonts. If he wants others to use them, he moves them to /Library/Fonts
I believe that 3rd one is where your fonts should go, but someone with more knowledge than me may be able to explain it better.
If you use Font Book to install your new fonts, it should put them in the correct place automatically.

just make sure your CLASSPATH includes cloudscape.jar. Not just the path, but also the jar filename.
There is also a jre/lib/ext path in your java installation where you can dump your jar file so it will automatically be seen when you run your program.

Corel has it right when it comes to type (but not much else...)... select a type group and when you look through the font list a flyout with a sample comes up... is there a way to do this in Illustrator? because as of right now Illustrators font list setup is just awful...

Adobe InDesign CS4 fonts - where'd they go?

Using a PC. I work for a municipal govt which finally upgraded me from adobe CS to CS4 this past year. I mostly use InDesign for my work publications and was thrilled to have some new fonts with the new CS4 on my system (fonts like Baveuse, Blue Highway, Burnstown Dam, Carbon Block, Kredit, Earwig Factory, Hurry Up, Planet Benson2, Teen, Pupcat and more).
But within the last month, all of these particular fonts (and others) have totally disappeared. I can't use them at all in InDesign now. So how do I get them back? Were these particular fonts on a certain install disk? My IT dept reinstalled the entire suite yesterday, but it didn't bring back the missing fonts...
Also where are fonts supposed to be stored on my computer? (If they are supposed to be in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CS4\Fonts - there's nothing in this folder at all.)
I am by no means an expert with CS4, so if you can give me any help, please give it to me in layperson terms. I'm trying to do the best I can here. I appreciate your responses in advance. Thanks!

Well, you can put fonts there, just by dragging them off the disks and dropping them in to that folder - if you do that, then InDesign can use the fonts, but no other programs will be able to do so.
You didn't say which version of Windows you were using, but if you're using Windows 7, you can right-click on any font file and choose "Install" depending on your system settings. That will make the fonts available to all the programs on your computer, not just InDesign. If your IT department understands that you're an InDesign user who needs to be able to install fonts, that method will work. If it doesn't work, it'll give you an error message that is probably NOT "Hey, you're not allowed to install fonts" but "These font files are corrupt." If you see that, it probably means that your IT department has not given you the power of installing fonts, which means they'd need to do it.
In Windows XP, you actually have to navigate to the Fonts folder (Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Fonts) and then choose File -> Install Font.

Where should JavaBeans be placed when using Tomcat?

I want to use a javaBean from inside a JSP, but it seems like Tomcat can't find the bean (...can't find the class).
Is there a particular catalogue where the bean-classes should be placed?
My test-JSP looks like this:

Your problem most probably is that your class isn't a member of a package. A recent change to the way java/tomcat works is that classes in the default package (ie no package) aren't visible any more.
Put your class in a package(eg SimplePackage), so your className would become simplePackage.ASimpleBean
The class files should be placed under your web-inf/classes directory on your web application.

Query slow down when added a where clause

I have a procedure that has performance issue, so I copy some of the query and run in the sql plus and try to spot which join cause the problem, but I get a result which I can figuer out why. I have a query which like below:
Select Count(a.ID) From TableA a
-- INNER JOIN other tables
WHERE a.TypeID = 2;
TableA has 140000 records, when the where clause is not added, the count return quite quick, but if I add the where clause, then the query slow down and seems never return so I have to kill my SQL Plus session. TableA has index on TypeID and TypeID is a number type. When TablA has 3000 records, the procedure return very quick, but it slow down and hang there when the TableA contains 140000 records. Any idea why this will slow down the query?
Also, the TypeID is a foreign key to another table (TableAType), so the query above can written as :
Select Count(a.ID) From TableA a
-- INNER JOIN other tables
INNER JOIN TableAType atype ON a.TypeID = atype.ID
WHERE atype.Name = 'typename';
TableAType table is a small table only contains less than 100 records, in this case, would the second query be more efficient to the first query?

TableA now has 230000 records and 28000 of them has the TypeID 2.
I haven't use the hint yet but thank you for your reply which let me to to run a query to check how many records in TableA has TypeID 2. When I doing this, it seems pretty fast. So I begin with the select count for TableA only and gradually add table to join and seems the query is pretty fast as long as TableA is the fist table to select from.
Before in my query TableA is the second table to join from, there is another table (which is large as well but not as large as TableA) before TableA. So I think this is why it runs slow before. I am not at work yesterday so the query given in my post is based on my roughly memory and I forget to mention another table is joined before TableA, really sorry about that.
I think I learn a lesson here, the largest table need to be in the begining of the select statement...

CS5 Goodies Fonts, where do they really go?

I am asking this question because i have herd 5 different answers from friends and web designers about where the CS5 Goodies Fonts go from the purchase CD's. I have them in a folder now, should I store them in the system folder or copy them to the programs directory for each application.
Is there a way to put them in a folder so that "all adobe applications" can utalize them for production and publishing.

to use a font in any application, it must be installed on your system. either left click a font you want to install or right click it and then click install.

EXS & Kontakt Libraries - where should they go?

I have Logic 8 plus Kontakt 2.0 and a few other plug ins.
I have just got a 500Gb USB HD and filled it with loads of WAV's and samples for use with Logic and Ableton etc.
Within these samples there are a few Kontakt .nki and EXS folders that look like they have been set up for these samplers.
Does anyone know where i should put these so that EXS and Kontakt can seem them within there library lists/file browsers?
Are they ok to be on a seperate drive?
I also have some AKAI cds and an Emu Library CD but my G5 says these discs arent readable? Is there a special way to import these so that the EXS can read them?
(Also whilst im here can i put AU presets/sounds on my 3rd drive ie: FM& extra sounds/Absynth extra sounds? - will these be read ok?)

I'm not at my DAW but there are some general rules: USB drives are not good for audio. They are just too slow. Though you can find a writing 480Mbits/second on the disk but in fact that speed is maximum which means that you can't expect it all the time. A firewire disk is standard these days for audio (FW400 and 800).
The NKIs can be anywhere but you have to point Kontakt on them (there is a feature to rebuild database - this is a time consuming step so be patient, it can take even 10-15minutes) or just browse your disks everytime you want to use your samples. There are 2 kinds of Kontakt programs - they can be just in an NKI file (programs and samples in one file) or separate programs and related samples. AFAIR the programs and related samples should be in the same folder to avoid unwanted 'where is that sample?' Kontakt messages.
EXS - do the folders contain only samples (ie wavs or aiffs)? If so you can't use them directly in EXS - you have to prepare programs for them which is time consuming. If luckily there are .exs files, to there you have to copy them to an appropriate place in your system drive. They should be in 'Sampler Instruments' folder but I don't remember now where it is located - try to find it in finder. Probably you'll find several folders with the name - try to put the .exs files in each and observe the resluts (launch Logic then relaunch etc). Samples can be anywhere and the sampler should find them easily, though it can take some seconds.
AKAI disks - I don't remember but the EXS can read such disks. Just open the options menu and it should explain you what to do.

Font Book validation problem when adding fonts

I installed 10.6.2 last night and then turned the machine off as normal.
This morning I start up and every action is followed by 10-30 seconds of spinning beachball action.
The only process using up more than about 2% was fontworker which I've since found out is the startup font building/analysing/caching part of Font Book.
I've read the suggestions on here about removing font caches, removing font libraries, etc. and have tried them all.
The only way I've managed to get the system back up to 100% is to remove all fonts from my libraries (1500+ fonts) and run with just the system fonts installed.
The problem I now have is that every time I try to add a font, the Font Book validation progress bar comes up, stays there for a minute or so per font and then says there's a serious error and it can't be validated and must not be used.
I've tried it on lots of different fonts from lots of different sources (Adobe, Monotype, Microsoft, T22, Linotype, even some I've done myself with Fontographer/Fontlab) and the symptoms are identical.
Any help happily received.

Normally that would work, however I've already tried that - and to the other 2 font folders just in case - and I get no more fonts listed in my menus than I already had.
Just for clarification I've tried them in:
- Home/Library/Fonts (i.e. my user account folder)
- /Library/Fonts (at top level)
- /System/Library/Fonts (at top level)
I've tried restarting with them in one folder at a time, then tried it again with them in all 3 folders.
I should have followed the rule "If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it." as 10.6 and 10.6.1 were working fine, as was 10.5.

How can I bypass a potentiometer that feeds into a drive controller by using an SCC-AO10 module? Which wires must I cut and where should they connect to the SCC-AO10 module?

I am trying to bypass a potentiometer that controls a wind tunnel DC motor. The potentiometer (10 kohm) has a greeen wire (+10V) a blue wire (ground) and a red wire (AI1 voltage, 0-10 V). These three wires feed into an ABB mounted drive controller that somehow converts the 3-phase (220-240V) power to a signal for the DC motor in the wind tunnel. I want to make a velocity control loop for the wind tunnel speed in Labview and I must bypass the potentiometer. If I am planning to use a PID that equates a measured velocity to the setpoint velocity, how can I get a output signal from my SCC-AO10 to the drive controller? I have been asked to use a switch that would allow the potentiometer to be used or the automatic control loop in Labview. Which wires will I need to cut from the potentiometer and where will I have to connect them on the SCC-AO10?
Has anybody done this and the PID for a wind tunnel motor? Please help me if you can.

Thanks for looking out. We have a PCI-6251 connected
to a SC-2345 box. In the box we are taking temperature and pressure
measurements from the wind tunnel for the velocity measurement with a TC02 and a AI04. The
windtunnel has a control panel where the ABB drive controller connects the 3-phase to the wind tunnel motor. The controller has a +10V reference voltage, an output frequency reference (0...10V), and a ground that feed from the potentiometer. The controller also has a +24V (max. 200mA) auxiliary voltage output which appears to drive the motor. From what I understand, the potentiometer's position is the function (output frequency reference). We eventually want to make a velocity setpoint input in Labview that will drive the motor accordingly. I am guessing the best way is to make use of the controller. I was wondering if you could help me figure out the cable connections necessary to bypass the potentiometer and generate a signal from Labview that will drive the motor. Again the 3 cables from the potentiometer are: greeen wire (+10V), blue wire (ground) and red wire (AI1 voltage, 0...10 V). I have seen that the SCC-AO10 needs a ground and the positive lead wire. I am not sure how this compares to how the potentiometer is connected.
We are using Labview 8.2.

Notes - Where Should They Be?

I have figured out that Notes from my iPhone are in Mail>Reminders>Notes. There I have On My Mac (the iPhone notes), MobileMe, and Gmail notes. I have figured out that if I paste and match style in Mail, I can then 'Sync Now' in MobileMe and my USB connected iPhone gets the additional/updated Notes. What can I do with the 'MobileMe' Notes option, and can it become the master Notes repository between my Macs, PCs, and iPhone?

Installing 10.6 ended up duplicating all my Notes via MobileMe, but after I deduced which ones were the duplicates and deleted them I am OK again.

N80 - where should mp3 files be on memory card

I have an N80 and use Apple Macs. I use the Thrubb application to tranfer music. Where should they reside on the memory card ? When I transfer to Sounds > Digital I can't see them via Music Player but can via Gallery.

With the music player, remember to update the music library: Music > Options > Music library > Options > Update Music library

HELP! Where should I put my codecs and plug-ins!?

I do a bit of amateur editing, and I have a bunch of codecs and plug-ins. And a few months ago, I realized I MIGHT have been putting them in the wrong folder!
Macintosh HD / Library / Quicktime
So... I "copied all" and I pasted into the OTHER folder that seemed to have some codecs and plug-ins:
Macintosh HD / System / Library / Quicktime
Then, I "copied all" from THAT folder into the other folder, not overwriting duplicates.
I DO remember that there were some in BOTH folders before I started adding...
HELP! Where should they all go?

Um, mpeg2, Divx, etc... flip and perian are fine, but don't come anywhere NEAR allowing you to play the totality of formats out there.
However, I guess my question should have been, which ones are "Apples" and which ones aren't... I'd love to NOT have duplicates in both folders.
Is there anywhere that lists the "default" Apple Quicktime Pro codecs and plug-ins that should be in that "apple only" folder?
