When am i entitled to have my macbook exchanged for a new one?

I bought my Macbook PRO 17 inch last Sept4, 2007 in hongkong.
July 8, 2008, it froze. A portion of the screen displayed a pixellated image and all the proggrams, including the Tiger OS froze. after i hardbooted, it worked. but in the next 20 minutes or so, a) it still froze b) the LCD didn't light up at all, c) an error message was all i could see on the display and i coudn't get past it.
July 9, 2008, i brought it to the apple technical support in my country, here in the Philippines. About 5 days later, i got a text message saying that the problem was the logic board and the optical drive and that they've already ordered for the parts and will inform me as soon as they fix it.
I drop by the following week (wednesday, i think) just in case my laptop is ready for release, and i find out that it is already fixed. i bring it home and it works fine.
July 17, 2008, same errors happen. It freezes, Part of the screen pixellates, same error reading that i cant get through.
July 18, 2008. i Bring it back to the apple apple technical support and am told that its a software problem. a technician fidgets with it on mac's version of pc's DOS. He tells me that it can't be fixed on Disc Utility though the problem can be viewed there. he releases the laptop back to me this same day telling me that it is fixed.
July 27, 2008. Same problems occur again. Freezes, part of the screen pixellates, same error reading that i cant get through.
I am told that the parts get shipped from Singapore and that sometimes, they get reconditioned parts. not brand new.
I demand that they replace my laptop since i doubt that they can really fix it.
a) Lack of faith. If they knew what was wrong with it in the first place, they should have been able to fix it the first time.
b) reconditioned parts?
c) whatever is in my laptop ruins new or reconditioned replacement logic boards
d) it can't go on forever, this going back and forth from the repair center.
I am told to call the apple 1-800 number to request for a replacement.
July 28, 2008 I call the apple 1-800 number. i talk to a service officer named ELVIS.
he denies that they use "used" or "reconditioned" replacement parts. It is a very long and excruciating phone call with a very defensive support officer, yet in the meantime, my laptop is in limbo. so is my work. i am leaving for a trip the coming weekend and i will need a laptop.
July 29,2008 i drop be the apple technical/service center and demand that they give me a service unit while they try again to fix my laptop. they promise a service unit the following day.
July 30,2008. i drop by to get the service unit. it is a scratched and battered 1 5inch macbook pro. unpresentable, but it will have to do while they try to fix my laptop.
It is August 18,2008. almost 40 days since i first took my laptop to the apple service center. i still do not have my laptop. I've called Elvis last friday, August15,2008 and he has no answers for me.
when will this problem be solved?

No computer fixing takes this long, at least not knowing what is going on... Call and ask for updates. If they cannot provide feedback, tell them to call you back within a certain number of days (say, 48 hours) to provide you with feedback.
If they still don't know what's going on with your computer, well that's at least getting to embarrass them by then for sure. As soon as you have reached a certain psychological barrier you set for yourself (say, 1 month, 2 months...) being without your own machine, start pressuring them for a new one.
Apple computers have a one year warranty even without Apple Care... You said you bought it last September, early September. Ask them to give you a new machine by then at the very maximum, since it is already past mid-August. Be firm, calm, and level-headed, write down anything you might want to say beforehand, don't ever sound like you hesitate or are confused on any issue. Communication is an art and a science, you have to persuade, achieve your goals, avoid confusion, acquire information, et cetera.
Every day that passes without your machine is money lost for you, time and energy lost, and ultimately, you paid for something which is devaluating and not even in your possession. I feel the same way about my car when dealership X or collision center Y promises one week repairs and it takes longer. They are always in the wrong not to follow up on their promises, and they know it. As powerless as they might be, they have to respect their customers. It goes a long way. I converted about a third of my faculty and my friends to Apple goods and services, so I expect respect in return. Word of mouth is a dangerous tool.
Good luck,
Dr Sly

You might get something for it here

if it is in working condition you might be better off selling it locally

  • Is it possible to exchange for a new macbook pro?

I have a 2010 macbook pro with my apple care already expired since summer of 2011. I haven't had any problems with it until this past month where the hard drive became corrupted and the computer started getting really slow and "laggy" and the fans constantly spinning faster and louder than normal. I took it to the local apple store and they fixed the hard drive and replaced a few parts with a charge of $300, but the other problem still persists. I took it back to get it repaired again, but later on in the day I got it back, the problem is still there. Is there anyway I could just exchange the macbook pro for a new one? I'm really needing it for this school semester but I haven't been able to use it at all because I keep taking it back to get repaired.

First, go back to the Apple Store and inquire about their repair. Their work is guaranteed for a period of time but I am unsure about its duration.
There is no trade-in or trade up program but full time college students are entitled to discounts on new purchases. Ask about that too.

I have bought an iPhone 4S in Brazil and I would like to know if I can replace my old iPhone for a new one (iPhone 5S), at some Apple Store in USA, if I pay just the difference between both values.

    You're welcome.
I would advise against that for the reasons I provided.
Could I have my iPad 2 for the new one paying the difference between their values?
No. Sell the existing yourself and use the proceeds to purchase a new iPad.

  • I have a password problem. After importing data and settings from one MacBook Pro to a new one, I have to put my iCloud password in when re-starting, but the password from the old computer in when waking the computer from sleep.

I have a password problem. After importing data and settings from one MacBook Pro to a new one, I have to put my iCloud password in when re-starting the new computer, but the password from the old computer in when waking the computer from sleep. I want to use my iCloud password on both computers consistently. How can I fix this?

The only other place to change a password for the computer login is in Users & Groups preferences. But I don't really know enough here to fix your problem. You can try fixing the keychain:
iCloud- Frequently asked questions about iCloud Keychain
    Tutorial: Resolving Keychain Issues
If you can't access your keychain, or forget your password If you can't get into your keychain file because you've forgotten your password or the keychain file appears to be corrupt, there are a couple of options.
First, if you've forgotten your password, you can use the "Keychain First Aid" utility to make the keychain password the same as the login password. This can be accomplished via the following process:
      1. Open Keychain Access (located in Applications/Utilities)
      2. Go to the "Keychain Access" menu and select "Preferences"
      3. Click the "First Aid" tab
      4. Make sure the "Synchronize login keychain password" box is checked
      5. Close the Preferences window
      6. Go to the "Keychain Access" menu and select "Keychain First Aid"
      7. Enter your username and password
      8. Click the "Repair" button
The second option is to completely delete your keychain then recreate it. This routine is useful if your keychain appears to be corrupt or otherwise inaccessible. This can be accomplished as follows:
      1. Launch Keychain Access (located in Applications/Utilities)
      2. Click "Show Keychains" in the lower-left corner of the window.
      3. Select the problematic keychain from the left-hand pane.
      4. Navigate to the "File" menu and select "Delete Keychain '(name of keychain)'"
      5. Check all options for deletion and press "OK"
      6. Create a new keychain by going to the "File" menu, then "New" and selecting
          "New Keychain"
      7. You can now make this keychain your default if you desire by selecting it, then
going to the "File" menu and selecting "Make '(name of keychain)' Default"
Login as root and perform repair In some cases, problems with keychains can only be resolved when logged in as the root user.
First, you want to enable the root user:
      1. OS X Mountain Lion: Enable and disable the root user
      2. OS X Lion: Enable and disable the root user
      3. Mac OS X 10.6: Enabling the root user
      4. Enabling and using the "root" user in Mac OS X
After enabling the root user, and logging in under this account, again open Keychain Access. First attempt repairs using Keychain First Aid, and failing that, delete then recreate the keychain as described above while logged in as root.
Persistently asked for stored passwords If you are persistently asked for passwords in various applications that you have specified should be remembered in a keychain, your "login" keychain may not be active for one reason or another.
Navigate to ~/Library/Keychains/ (this is the Library folder inside your user's home folder). Find the file named "login.keychain" and double-click it.
Failing that, select the "login" keychain within the Keychain Access application and make sure it is the default keychain by going to the "File" menu and selecting "Make 'Login' Default"
Turn off Keychain synchronization in applications having problems If specific applications are experiencing issues when accessing password-protected material, the Keychain may be to blame.
The above comes from an article published on MacFixit.com.

I have a MacBook pro that has power issues and will not start but the hardrive is fine.  I do not want to lose all of my files so I was wondering if it's possible to transfer my hardrive from a older Macbook pro to a new one if I were to purchase a new one?  Also, the software is not updated as the computer hasn't worked for about 2 months.
Also, if it is possible to transfer the hardrive, would my iTunes music transfer as well?  It is not saved in the cloud.
Thanks for your help, it is much appreciated.

You computer is probably perfectly repairable, but if you want a new one anyway, it is perfectly possible to transfer the data from the faulty one.
But it would be a mistake to simply put the old HD in the new computer.
    These are the steps:
Remove Hard drive from faulty computer. (very easy on Unibody MBPs, do-able but not so easy on older MBPs)
Put it in a cheap enclosure
    Connect it the new computer
    Boot up new computer.
If the new computer has never been run before the Setup Assistant will ask if you want to import your apps, data, settings etc from either another mac, another HD connected to the Mac or a Time Machine back up.
Obviously chose the second option (another HD connected to this Mac) and follow prompts.
If the new computer has already been run (so Setup Assistant doesn't run when you boot it up), you will need to use Migration Assistant...or run the installer again so that Setup Assistant runs again.

I have a very old (by computer standards) MacBook Pro, and a newer one.  I've been using the old one mostly for iTunes, into which I have only CD entries.  For a long time, years, the old MacBook pro ceased entering the song titles.  This is very time consuming for me, so I finally investigated a bit further.
I discovered how to enter the track titles onto my newer MacBook Pro, and was so pleased!  But when I tried to do the same with the other laptop, it failed.
What I did, basically, was what the Apple Help suggested--choose iTunes General Preferences, etc.etc.  And yes, I did upgrade the old laptop to the newest iTunes version.
Am I just wasting my time here? Is there some reason why an older Mac Pro will not do what the newer one will, with regard to iTunes?
My older laptop is a 2.6 GHz Core Duo; it has 36 GB of "memory available."  The newer one  a 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7. It has 284 GB of memory available.
Both are using the same version of Snow Leopard--10.6.8.

hi, I have a macbook pro with a new hard drive installed and restored. My WD external drive backup on time machine now wont let me access the files. I get a prompt saying 'you do not have permission to access the files' After my new drive was installed I plugged in time machine and it started backing up. I paused it when I realised that it was running for more than a few minutes. I now realise that it probably started backing up the new hard drive all over again. Which makes me think that the original back up must be on the WD back I cant seem to access it. Any ideas would be helpful.

Eww, thanks for your reply, as it makes good sense, and common sense is practical when you walk into an Apple store.
I guess all the reviews and great specs of the new MB pro's made me want one...
I should probably use my current setup till it is totally outdated or simply is beyond repair.
I could ask Santa Claus for one, but by than, the 2012's will be coming out..:)
Thanks Eww for your reply, IAN....

  • Hard disk in mums macbook failed, bought a new one, formatted it first. Have tried starting it with every possible key and I either get flashing question mark folder or a cursor.

Hard disk in mums macbook failed, bought a new one, used sata adapter cable to format it for mac first. Connected it and have tried starting it with every possible key combination and I either get flashing question mark folder or a cursor. A disk is stuck in it so I can't boot from OSX, and yes I have tried every option of starting to try and eject disk but none work. HELP ME!

Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
      1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
left mouse button until the disc ejects.
      2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
      3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
      4. Press COMMAND-E.
      5. If none of the above work try this: Open the Terminal application in
your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
            /usr/bin/drutil eject
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into Single-user Mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.
If you have a 2010 MBP or later, then you can use Internet Recovery. Start by rebooting the computer. At the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION-R keys until a Globe appears in the upper part of the screen. This process can take upwards of 15 minutes to get connected to the Apple network servers. You should eventually see the utility screen of the Recovery HD. You may now go about the process to install Mountain Lion:
    Install Lion/Mountain Lion on a New HDD/SDD
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
    1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select your external hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • I'm buying a new Macbook Pro this week and am wondering what is the best way to copy over the software I have from my existing Macbook Pro to the new one? eg. Photoshop and Office etc. I no longer have the CDs.

I'm buying a new Macbook Pro this week and am wondering what is the best way to copy over the software I have from my existing Macbook Pro to the new one? eg. Photoshop and Office etc. I no longer have the CDs.

Ya know what I'm on a brand new MBP just about 24 hours old and you know whats been working amazingly for me. I have a 27inch iMac as well and i've just connected it to my network and been dragging files and apps across the network onto my new MBP. Its really working fast and its flawless. You could always do that option, Just go into sharing options and turn them on for both Macs. Then just click and drag. Of course they have to both be on the same network for this to be possible.
    Look at my network.
Shared is what your looking at.  I click on there see all my computers files and then drag the ones i want form its folder to my MBP folders.  Hope that helps if your looking for a very simple way on a wireless network.
