When and when not to use Appletalk?

Our network manager and the Tech Dept. boss (I am the Mac Support guy in a cross-platform school district) are concerned- no, panicking, that Appletalk is too "chatty" and interfering with the network. We have Cisco VOIP installed, and I've seen no problems- but the Novell network manager mentioned a minor (latency?) issue that got blown out of proportion. We are running mostly OS X (Panther and Tiger) on iMacs, eMacs, and iBooks- printing to both USB inkjets and Appletalk network laser printers- from OS X, but also Classic or OS 9. Is there an urgent need to switch to IP printing, and what do we give up in the process besides familiarity for all concerned (especially users)?

AppleTalk really isn't necessary anymore unless you have very old printers. If you have multiple subnets, I would make sure multicast routing is enabled on your network as this makes setting up newer printers a breeze since most support multicast DNS (Bonjour). For IP printing I would recommend making sure printers have reserved IP addresses and DNS names. Also make sure LPD/LPR is enabled on the printers.
If you are going to disable AppleTalk you have to do it at each client. It's not something you can turn off at the switch. You can disable AppleTalk routing, but that doesn't eliminate the chatter. Speaking of chatter you mentioned Novell. If you're still using IPX, it's just as, if not more chatty than AppleTalk.

  • I have an macbook air and iPad 2. Then I upgraded to OS X YOSEMITE everything when downhill . it will not finish downloading and could not even used my FaceTime . Help pls.

    To Whom It May Concern,
I have a MacBook Air, Ipad 2 everything was fine. Then I upgraded it to OS X Yosemite , everything when downhill, can not even use FaceTime . i have tried everything. Can somebody help me out on this please. Thank you.

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite

  • Satellite 1400 enters stand by after 30 mins when it's not in use

    Hey all.
I have just installed a 256Mb RAM module, so I now have 384Mb RAM. Since this has been installed, the computer enters stand by mode after about 30 mins when it is not in use. I have tried to change to power management settings, but when I click on power management in the Toshiba console, nothing happens! Likewise when I use the power management from the control panel (in windows XP), it tells me to use the Toshiba console! Help! How do I change the time before the computer enters stand by mode??
    Cheers

    Hi
First of all if the Toshiba power saver is installed on the notebook so the windows power options doesnt work.
All power settings should be changed or set in the power saver.
You have to choose the power saver mode and click details
There you should see 3 tabs.
Check the second tab Power saver there you can change some settings, also the stand by time. After this procedure you have to apply the changing.
Check also the 3rd tab System Power mode
Check also a similar posting about a power saver

  • Lets discuss F4V and when and when not to use it.

Ok, from my understanding, all F4V is is H.264 video and AAC audio combined in flash container that supports cue points etc... I am trying to figure out the benefit when Flash Player can play the H.264/AAC content in the MP4 container just the same (minus cue points). Just what are the advantages (if any) of using F4V over the MP4 container?
Consider the following scenario. I have a bunch of videos that have already been encoded to MP4 using H.264. There is no current way to get these MP4 into the F4V container outside of re-encoding causing further loss. However, all new content is encoded using the F4V container. Lets say that in a year I decide that F4V isnt working out for me or I want to make my videos accessible to Ipods, Media consoles, or for playback in Windows Media Player in Windows 7, there is no tool to take the content in F4V and rewrap to MP4. All of these scenarios will force a re-encode.
One of the benefits I like with F4V currently is in the Media Encoder and how it allows the user to use the source input resolution and framerate where as the H.264 option, I have to manually change size and framerate. Doing that isnt so bad when all files are the same size and frame rate but sometimes I may have 10 diffent sizes and manually going into each file and finding size and adjusting is a pain in the ***.
I would prefer not to use mixed formats but it just seems like using F4V will lock me into the container forcing me to re-encode later on should I change my preferred method of delivery.
Can anyone shed some light on this?
P.S. Posted this in the Flash forum and got no hits on it and want to try it here since this deals more with Media Encoder.

    Thank you.

    Hi
I meant when they test a percentage of devices as part of quality control - to make sure that a particular batch of phones is defect free and market ready
The Call time is apparently the total time one spends talking on the phone between total resets and wipes

  • JAAS. BEA, when and how should I use it?

    Hi,
I am confused and I hope someone at BEA sees this post or someone who knows the
answer steps up and clarifies this issue for me - please.
I have a basic web application, WLS 7, using Struts, Toplink, Oracle 8i. Pretty
standard. In 6.0 we used RDBMS realms to Authenticate and Authorize our users.
We used the web.xml to indicate we were using FORM based authentication and the
SECURITY CONSTRAINTS were using role names that matched what the RDBMS Realms
    were pulling from Oracle.
As I read the docs and look at the examples I see all the old stuff is deprecated,
I do see I have the option of running in compatability mode - however I don't
want to do this if this is not the way things will be done in the future.
I followed the steps in the excellent post by Aaron Mulder "Weblogic 7 RDBMS Realm
Procedure" and create my own Authentication provider, deployed it and it seems
to be running. However I am now having problems getting the web.xml to "kick"
when I try and access a resticted resource I am not sent to my FORM Based authentication
login page... shouldn't I be? I would think the security constraints would be
loaded correctly and same with the LOGIN config stuff and that WLS would just
use all the providers but that it would know what to do for things like _security
check and all the contraints in the web.xml.
Am I going down the correct path? Do I just need to now write an Authorization
provider too? In my test in my Authentication provider I put everyone into the
"Administrators" group and use that in my web.xml. I would expect I would be sent
to the login page first, then WLS would upon form submittal, check the Authentication
provider, then my code would say all users are "Administrators", then it would
check that with the web.xml security constraint, then if the role matched would
send me on to the page.
Help :> I just want to get this working and make sure I am using the correct paradigm.
    Thanks,
    Jerry Rodgers

You use JAAS when running in the app maybe, that is up to the container. It
is transparent to the developer. If your writing a J2EE app, you do not need
to write JAAS modules. Use j_security_check and the rest is handled through
    the container.
You don't need that runAs() shit or LoginContxt.login() etc.
Only if you are outside the container.
Go head, reinvent the wheel. JAAS is meant for people who write containers,
not for people who use them.
Way to add confusion to an already clouded issue.
Also, let me explain J2EE authorization
You said: "As far as I know, J2EE does not specify how the authentication
is performed, so I don't know how you can say that JAAS goes
    against the J2EE spec."
Dude, you define security restraints (authorization) to whatever resources
you want through a web.xml or ejb-jar.xml by asigning roles to them.
Im doing it as we speak.

    Michael:
Please see my posts (8771 and 8772). You do use JAAS
when running an app within the WLS container. In fact,
you already are, whether you use the OOTB "new" security
SPI authentication providers or are in Compatibility
Security, in which case you're using JAAS through an adapter
    to your old-style Realm.
Concerning "standard" authentication, the J2EE spec says:
"The web client forwards the authentication data to
the web server, where it is validated by the web
server... The validation mechanism may be local to
the server, or it may leverage the underlying
security services. On the basis of the validation,
the web server sets a credential for the user."
(Also, see section J2EE.3.3.2, "Non Goals").
As far as I know, J2EE does not specify how the authentication
is performed, so I don't know how you can say that JAAS goes
against the J2EE spec. WLS chose to use JAAS for authentication
    because it's a Java-based implementation of a "standard" (PAM)
and Java security developers are familiar with it...
Jerry, it sounds like you're doing the right thing. You
will want to move away from the old Realm and get out of
Compatibility mode. I'm not sure what specific problem
you're having - if you're not being directed to your login
form page, my guess would be something else is wrong. That
is, I wouldn't expect to see a problem in the new ATN provider
crop up until after you had submitted your form info to
j_security_check. If you're not getting to the login page
at all, it would seem there might be a problem with a URL
mapping in a web resource collection, or something like that.
    Just a guess.
Also, I don't think you need to implement your own provider
unless the one that's there doesn't meet your needs. In other
words, I can't see any reason why your authentication provider
couldn't work just fine with all the other WLS OOTB security
    providers.

  • How do I log off my DSL/Firefox Internet connection when it is not in use?

With my old dialup/Firefox Internet connection, I could return to the provider's home screen and click on a button to log off. I do not want to be connected to the Internet 24/7, but want to log off when I am not using the service. The provider says I should unplug the incoming cable, but if I do it this way several times a day, it won't be long before I need a new cable. Please tell me that there is a better way.

  • New version of Firefox is missing settings. I cannot block ad links or animated pictures any more. I have uninstalled Firefox and plan not to use it now.

The new version of Firefox does not allow me to block sites from displaying media that I don't want. Many site advertisers trigger unpleasant animations and pics and I refuse to use a browser that does not allow me to block those. Because of this I have uninstalled and deleted Firefox from all my computers, including programs, settings, and registry entries.
If I get a reasonable answer from Mozilla on the settings I am missing then I will re-install Firefox, and if not then I'm never using Firefox again.

None of the solutions above allows me to block display of all images on a web page or to prevent scripts from running. Preventing pop-ups does not cut it. I want to see a web page that, without my explicit permission, displays nothing but text on every site. This has to do with regular content on pages, not advertisements. So far, it seems, the new Firefox is unable to provide this security.
These days so many 'advertisers' (so they call themselves) are competing more and more viciously to hijack web pages that I need to access by using auto-linking and animated images to get around ad-blockers. I need to be able to block everything except text on a page unless i give specific information to allow it for a particular site - some sites do not allow those ads and I can release the restrictions on those sites.
I am not using Firefox, and also have some complaints about other browsers; I am considering doing all my work on the Tor browser.

You might try a forced shutdown to begin with, hold down the top and home buttons together until the device shuts down, then restart it.

You may most likely need a HP Toolbox FX to configure the settings and put password protection.
Open HP ToolboxFX in one of these ways:
In the Windows system tray, double-click the HP ToolboxFX icon ( ).
On the Windows Start menu, click Programs (or All Programs in Windows XP and Vista), clickHP , click HP Color LaserJet CM2320 MFP Series , and then click HP ToolboxFX .

  • Print link on report shows 'no data found' when LOV has not been used

    Hi all,
I have a simple standard report that queries data based on the value in a Select List. This Select List allows users to pick a year for the report. The LOV has a default of TO_CHAR(SYSDATE,'YYYY').
If I open the page using the associated Tab everything wotks OK. However, if I open the page via a button on my home page, the prink links fails:
The page opens OK, the select list defaults OK and the report shows the correct data. However, if I click on the 'Download as CSV' or 'Print' links I get 'no data found'.
If I update the LOV to 2010 everything works. If I set it back to 2009 evenrything works. I just cant get it to work when I open the page.
I have tried adding computations to get this to work, but this does not seem to help.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hi,
It would depend on what has been added, if anything, to the redirect. The redirect should just function as though you had typed in a URL into the address bar and pressed Enter. The page doesn't get submitted, so any data entered onto the page itself is, unless it is already in session, lost. A button, however, should submit the page and Apex will store all values in the session. So, if the value you need for the LOV is from the previous page, then this is the preferred method - but, note, that the redirect can also store values provided the page item name and the value is included in the redirect's URL string
