When Arch meets Source-based
Hello there!
I've been an arch64 user for about half a year now and recently tried out Gentoo (Though I havent been really successful at custom kernels yet...).
Both distros are absolutely awesome, each it's pros and cons. Arch's BSD Style init + PKGBUILDs and simplicity, and Gentoos source-based and *complex*(in a negative way) customizability + USE flags
Are there currently any distros involving Arch's KISS and BSD style init, but with a source-based flavor? That would be my definition of the ultimate distribution.
I'll probably stay with Arch anyway but would still like to know
Thanks in advance! ~Sander

@catwell: AviSynth 3, sadly, is pretty much a dead project. I swear I will help work on it once I am useful in that area But for now, it's 100% unusable. As for USE flags, I disagree. They don't have to be complex (and they actually aren't too much). The problems arise I have found when you start setting USE flags because you _think_ you will use features in the future, or when you try to set all USE flags at the very beginning. Just roll with it, and set them when you need them. Although, more profiles containing average USE flags for different system use cases would not hurt at all.
@jcolinzheng: I agree on the configuration aspect completely. Gentoo should really have a structured, simple config system. Arch has demonstrated that you can do that without sacrificing power, I don't think source-based has to be necessarily too much more complex. As for LFS, it's real nice to learn with and just plain have fun with, but is hard to use as a main distro - mostly taking time to track upstream bugs, security flaws, patches needed, etc... it's ridiculous how much work distros do just for packaging (thanks Arch, btw ).
@alecmg: Agreed. OFFTOPIC{ Try comparing default KDE 4.1 to KDE 4.1 compiled with the 'kdehiddenvisibility' USE flag, and LDFLAGS="-Wl,-O1 -Wl,--enable-new-dtags -Wl,--hash-style=gnu -Wl,--sort-common -Wl,--as-needed". No, I'm not in ricer mode I've been experimenting with Funtoo long enough to know which flags are and aren't worth setting (e.g. CFLAGS="-O2 -march=native -pipe" is as good as it gets... more just fscks things up almost always). Startup times of KDE and some apps are boosted exponentially, assuming you had a fast PC to begin with. Some packages have problems with --as-needed, and to a lesser extent the dtags one, but they are getting fewer and fewer (and those two are the biggest helps). }

Is it possible to use Arch like a source-based distro?
I installed Gentoo on a spare box recently, and rather liked the idea of a source-based distribution. It's nice to think that the natively compiled code is optimized for my processor, even though even many Gentooists admit that the practical performance gains are minimal. However, Gentoo is less KISS-oriented and less bleeding edge than Arch, and I love Arch too much to switch anyway. I was wondering if one could recompile an entire Arch system using processor-specific optimizations like Gentoo, and maybe even have some equivalent of Gentoo USE flags? I can't manually recompile every package, and then do it again every time there's an upgrade - that would be too tedious. So, is there some automated method - to essentially use Arch like a source-based distribution? Can ABS help, or maybe a community-contributed tool? And finally, for a source-based and yet Arch-like distribution, what do you guys think of CRUX? Given that their documentation and community is much smaller than ours, is it very bothersome to install and maintain a desktop system using CRUX?

Rebuild everything from source:
bauerbill --build-all -S $(pacman -Qq)
Build all available upgrade from source, including dependencies:
bauerbill --build-all -Syu
Install new package by building from source, including dependencies:
bauerbill --build-all -S <pkgname>
Bauerbill also provides an "AutoPatch" option that enables you automatically apply patches to PKGBUILDs and install files when building from source so you only have to edit a PKGBUILD once.
*edit*
Of course, you could simply enable "BuildAll" in the configuration file and skip the flag.
@Xyne
So bauerbill will build all the deps for packages from source too [dependency resolution] and build from source packages from groups [ex. xorg, gnome, kde, xfce4, etc]?? I'm having a hell of a time with pacbuilder as it's not as functional as I had hoped, so I am thinking of using bauerbill, if it does what I need or is actually functional as pacbuilder but more functional [deps, patching, etc] then i'll use it exclusively! Thanks for any help.

Error While Activating BI Web service data source based on MDM XI.
Dear experts,
Need help with an error that i am getting for a BI data source based on XI MDM. An extra field was added in the data source as part of business requirement and it works fine in dev environment but when we transported the changes to Q environment it is always giving following error.
The web-service based communication structure in the data source in QA is not getting updated with the new field in the target system.
Any inputs or pointers would be appreciated.
Thanks,
AbhishekMany thanks for your help. This solved the issue for our .NET code, however the leak is still present in the report designer. I was also wondering if you could help further: because of the limits on the java memory process is there a way to ensure that a separate java process is started for each report that is loaded in my report viewers collection? Essentially the desktop application that i have created uses a tab control to display each type report, so each tab goes through the following code when displaying a report and closing a tab:
Is there a way to ensure that a different Java process is kicked off each time that I display a different report? My current code in c# always uses the same Java process so the memory ramps up. The code to load the report and then dispose of the report through closing the tab (and now the Java process) looks like this:
private void LoadCrystalReport(string FullReportName)
ReportDocument reportDoc = new ReportDocument();
reportDoc.Load(FullReportName, OpenReportMethod.OpenReportByTempCopy);
this.crystalReportViewer1.ReportSource = reportDoc;
private void DisposeCrystalReportObject()
if (crystalReportViewer1.ReportSource != null)
ReportDocument report = (ReportDocument)crystalReportViewer1.ReportSource;
foreach (Table table in report.Database.Tables)
table.Dispose();
report.Database.Dispose();
report.Close();
report.Dispose();
GC.Collect();

Problem with R/3 Data Source based on Function module in SAP BI
Hi,
We have a data source based on functional module. When we load data from R/3 to BI we face the following error.
" No end-confirmation arrived in the Warehouse from the source system."
We are getting data but due to no end confirmation from the source system, the load become timed-out and status becomes "RED". When we change the status to be "GREEN" and proceed tha load further, load is fine.
Please suggest us a suitable solution.
Thanks in Advance,
GeethaHi Geetha Devi Ramalingam.
I faced the same problem since yesterday. I just resolve the issue.
So here is my solution :
try this code :
FETCH NEXT CURSOR s_cursor
APPENDING CORRESPONDING FIELDS
OF TABLE e_t_data
PACKAGE SIZE s_s_if-maxsize.
IF sy-subrc <> 0.
CLOSE CURSOR s_cursor.
RAISE no_more_data.
ENDIF.
if you add your
bold
IF sy-subrc <> 0.
CLOSE CURSOR s_cursor.
RAISE no_more_data.
ENDIF.
bold
than the sy-subrc may be equal and than your CLOSE CURSOR s_cursor. will have no effect
it work for me hope it will for u
Hard luck!

Generic Data source based on Infoset
Hi,
I have a Generic data source based on Infoset. i need hostorical data from this data source, when i extract it is given me only current data. Infoset based on PNPCE logical database, in the Infoset query (ECC6) when i select "All" it gives all data, but when i extract with RSA3 with perticular personal number it just give me 1 record,
Please help me to fix this problem.
Thanksi think you mean to get data relevant to a date. have you setup the begda/enda as selection parameters in the generic datasource? that would be the only aside from a custom program to first fetch the data and then send it to bi.
with the dates, you can pull it with the relevant date range setup in the infopackage -
Multiple data sources based on a parameter
Hi there!
Is it possible to get data from different data sources based on a parameter?
For example, I have SQL query and parameter pFI that can be equal to 1 or 2.
So if the pFI = 1 then I need to execute this query in DB1 otherwise I need to execute It in DB2.I do not think its possible to change the datasource on a data model dynamically. However you could create two seperate data models and two seperate layouts using a parameter to distguish between the two when you call the report.

Lunar linux and sourced based distros in general
Whilst looking for versions of linux that I haven't tried as of yet, I stumbled across Lunar.
Distrowatch:
Lunar is a source based Linux distribution with a unique package management system which builds each software package, or module, for the machine it is being installed on. Though it can take a while to do a complete Lunar installation it's worth it as it tends to be quite fast, once installed! In the beginning Lunar was a fork of Sorcerer GNU Linux (SGL). The fork occurred in late January to early February of 2002 and was originally made up of a small group of people who wanted to collaboratively develop and extend the Sorcerer technology. The original name for the project was Lunar-Penguin but the group decided to re-christen it Lunar Linux while the Lunar-Penguin name has become a sort of umbrella which the team could use if they decide to collaboratively develop something besides Lunar Linux.
Has anyone tried this flavour yet? Might give it a whirl on a VM (compile times on a VM might be a deal breaker though!). Something which strikes me as odd is the fact the forums are closed.. link. I cant find any information as to why this is the case.
Does the community think that sourced based distributions are better than pre-compiled versions? There dont seem to be that many sourced based about, but of those that are they seem to tout speed as a big plus.
Gentoo "Extreme performance, configurability and a top-notch user and developer community are all hallmarks of the Gentoo experience".
Lunar "locally compiling an optimized system tailored toward the users specific needs. This should result in a lean and optimized operating system for example both tout speed as being one of their major plus points".
Is the linux world lazy, and just like the ease of .deb .rpm pacman etc? Because if sourced based is better, then surely there would be more sourced based distros about? So this leads me to think that either potential sourced based bonuses dont outweigh the time it takes to compile, or the linux world is just plain lazy (hardware issues aside as a reason not to used sourced based).ryuslash wrote:
I've tried it a couple of times, but I've never gotten it to work, always with installing something some dependency couldn't be met because it couldn't be found on the server. Too bad too because I really thought it could be interesting...
Oh well, now I've found arch
Same experience here.
I won't call Lunar a bad distro. It has some appeal for a small niche-within-a-niche. However, because of the small size of the project and community, the quality suffers.
I've tried it in the past on the most generic hardware I had at the time and there were always installation issues which turned out to be showstoppers for me.
There are so many distros, yet in my view, there are so few high-quality distros.
Debian (big), Slackware (small), Arch (small), Fedora (big), and Centos (small) are all good, solid distros.
I find once I venture outside of these solid systems, lack of quality and annoying bugs manifest themselves. And even though a project may look intriguing for its innovation or fresh approach, unexpected behavior is to be expected.
YMMV -
Has anybody built Arch from source? Does anybody build packages from ABS (doesn't install it from official repo)?
Does anybody build packages from ABS (doesn't install it from official repo)?
I do that for some performance-critical packages like mplayer or for packages which aren't up to date yet, but from which i need the new features anyway(wine and the nvidia-drivers for instance). Actually building something source instead of binary is quite simplified by using yaourt(search the forums), since you only have type "yaourt -Sb package" to do it, although this is currently broken for community packages due to the repo migration from cvs to svn.
I don't see much sense in doing that for all packages though, because the difference from i686 to your architecture should not be noticable in most cases, especially if you don't have a very new chipset. This in my opinion waste of time when compiling _everything_ was actually the main reason that made me leave gentoo for archlinux.

Table contained in a topic causes slow response when working with source
I am using RoboHelp V8.0.2 (I have applied the two fixes available from the Adobe product site).
Here is my issue:
I am documenting a product that has over 1,500 metrics.
I am trying to make a list of 1,077 metrics in one topic (all the metrics are of the same "type" so they are grouped together).
The table presenting these metrics has two columns, a Field Name column and a Description column.
There is not a lot of text within the table - most of the explanations and calculations are defined outside the table.
When I have more than about 400 table rows, the response time working with the topic in source is just horrible.
It took 3 minutes to open the topic in source, another 3 minutes to move the table over .425in from margin.
When I try to close the project, it gets hung up.
Has anyone else run into a problem working with tables within a topic?
I had a similar response time issue with V8.0.0 in general when I first installed it.
Once I installed the two fixes, that problem was (for the most part) eliminated.
I think the second fix specifically addressed response time issues when working in source.
I am going to try this on one of my other writer's machine to see if it is the age of my computer.
My computer setup is:
Dell Precision work station with an Intel Xeon 2.40GHZ processor and 2MB of RAM.
I am using Windows XP Professional 5.1.26 Service Pack 3.0.
I have a 110 GB hard drive with 18 GB available.
As always - thanks for any insight or information.
Michael F WeartHi Michael.
Interestingly the maximum number of rows you can use when you create a table via the Table > Insert > Table menu item is 100. That said, I've just created a 500 row table and whilst it is slower than a smaller table it is OK. I am also using RH 8.0.2 but on a higher spec PC.

ORA-06502 when searching region source
The following is listed as a limitation of Apex 3.1, for both interactive reports and the application builder, although the specific context is not mentioned.
The row length limit is 32k (just as with Classic Reports). You can include more columns but if too many are selected to be displayed, the user will get the following error - "ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character string buffer too small". This should be considered when creating your report.You can find that here: http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/application_express/html/3.1_known_issues.html
I'm getting this very error when trying to search region source for one of my application items. Presumably the region source is larger than the 32k limit where my particular page item is being used?
Can anyone from Oracle verify that this is still a problem in Apex 3.2.0.00.27?

Wrong date format when creating a universe based on a MS Analysis cube
Hi,
When creating a universe based on a MS Analysis 2008 cube the date objects from the cube are created in the universe with CHAR format when it should be DATE format
I have tried to resolve the issue by modifying the date object in the universe with MDX but with little success.
I wonder if it is an error in the cube and that it actually should be possible to get the correct date format from the cube when creating the universe automatically in the universe design tool.
The date object is organised in a hierarchy.
Any ideas? - both to resolve the issue by using MDX in the universe object properties or in the cube.
The universe design tool is version 4.0 SP2 patch 5
/KimOh I knew I was missing something. Ok version 2.
I think in general this approach would work. I assumed you are starting from 1 and resetting to 1.
There should be error handling and so forth that is not here. Probably some details need to be tweaked.
So the key thing here AFAIK is to put the sequence reset in an autonomous procedure. Exactly how to do that may need to be modified.
PS this version has a bug. After the reset needs to change the increment of the sequence back to 1.
and I left that out. oops!

Sourcing Based on Company Code
Hi All,
Is there a way to configure sourcing based on company codes? We want carts to go into sourcing based on specific company codes.
Through configuration, you can seggregate carts based on product category, but we want on the basis of company codes!
Have already tried DOC_CHANGE & SRC_DETERMINE BADIs, they don't help.
Regards,
SnehalHi Disha,
Thank you for the reply.
But I am not quite very clear with the option you have suggested.
Do you mean carts for company codes where sourcing should be skipped, shouldn't be displayed in the purchasur's worklist ? Then how will they be converted to PO ?
I couldn't see any parameter in BADI BBP_WF_LIST which will convert the carts of specific company codes to PO.
Or some other BADI should be implement for this ?

Snehal
