When at home with WiFi  am I still using 3G data?

WiFi is turned off when the phone goes to sleep to preserve battery life unless the phone is connected to power. So any background data transfers will use cellular data. In addition, a few functions (such as visual voicemail) always use cellular data.
The bigger question is how do you know when it is using cellular data? You cannot use the timestamps on your bill or the carrier's website or iPhone app, because those are the times accumulated usage is reported to the billing system.

  • How to stop cellular connection when at home with wifi

I frequently download large fies to iPad then realize I'm still connected to ATT cellular while at home with wifi. How do I make iPad switch to wifi automatically when at home and not pay for cellular downloads by mistake?

I cannot figure out the connectivity settings when I am at home, so that I don’t pay for cellular data charges.
Even though my WLAN is available, or even if I first connect to it manually and the browser is using it, many widgets/apps  insist on using my cellular (Vodafone)  connection for data transfer.
I have tried various settings in  Menu/Settings/Connectivity/WLAN/Settings.
    Here are the  latest ones::
Switch to LAN: Known WLANs only
Data Use in home Network: Always Ask
Data use when roaming: Always Ask the
    No good......
Change the #2 to WLAN Only instead of Always Ask and it will kill any Cellular Data connection.

  • When at home with WiFi is Internet not charged?

Are Internet minutes charged when using at home with WiFi?

I have a data plan for my phone, but I'm not getting charged if I connect through my router at home. So, as long as you're using your home network you shouldn't get charged for it. The situation may be different connecting to public Wi-Fi spots.

  • If you use imessage while on WiFi does it still use your data plan or does it only use the data plan if you're on 3G?

I just got the new iPhone4s (my first time off of a flip phone!) with the imessaging but I'm not sure if that is going to use up my data plan if I use it instead of texts.  If I'm at home on my wifi will that still take away from my data plan if I use imessage? I know that FaceTime works off of wifi as opposed to the data plan but wasn't sure if it was the same for imessage.  I'm on the Verizon data plan if that matters.
    Thanks!

This weekend, the AT&T tower near our home failed.  We had no AT&T cell service whatsoever.  During this time, our home WiFi was always running at 100%.  No iMessage would go through, nor could any iMessage be received.  Both my and my wife's iPhone 4S were connected to the home WiFi and were used with it.  Two things did not work: cell service and iMessage.
I think that iMessage seems to rely on the phone data plan, or at least the cell service must be in range to use it.

  • HT204409 How do I change or reset my password for my wifi? I have forgotten my initial password when I setup the wifi and now cant use it with my iPod but it still works with my iPad as the password option doesn't come up like the iPod.

If you are saying that the iPod asks for the password for the network and you do not know it, what may work is to turn on iCloud keychain for the iPod and iPad., Thet may sync the password from the iPad to the iPod

Otherwise you will have to go into the router settings and reset the wifi password in the router

Other times the Wi-Fi connection works fine and it check e-mail or other within few seconds. The connection problems seems to be intermitted
This issue never happened before with IOS 5 since I bought the new phone in Oct 2011.

We suffered the imap.gmail.com server problem After an IoS 6 upgrade. The simple solution is to delete the problem account, shut down the iPad, start up again and reenter the account. Everything comes back normally. Good Luck everyone!

This is from article on device with multiple computers:
iPod shuffle and iPhone are intended for use with a single computer. You cannot load music from multiple computers or iTunes libraries onto iPod shuffle and iPhone like you can with other devices.

  • If I got an unlocked iPhone 4s would I be able to use a 3G network? Like so when there is no wifi network can I use a 3G network if I got an unlocked iPhone? Or do you have to have a locked iPhone to do this?

if I got an unlocked iPhone 4s would I be able to use a 3G network? Like so when there is no wifi network can I use a 3G network to go on the internet when i am out if I got an unlocked iPhone? Or do you have to have a locked iPhone to do this?

If I am reading your question correctly, yes if there is no wifi
you can use 3G IF you have a contract with a wireless provider
and the appropriate SIM card if required. Being unlocked does not
give you access to 3G for free; you still have to pay for it. Same
for locked iPhone. Difference is that you would have to get contract
with whatever provider the iPhone is locked to if you have locked
iPhone; if iPhone is unlocked, you will have to make a choice from
    your local providers.
If this does not answer your questions, please post back with more
details and someone will answer you.

  • Currently using Lightroom 5 as a standalone on a mac and two windows machines one desktop one laptop. with CC can i still use all the machines or do i have to take out an individual license for each?

with CC can i still use all the machines or do i have to take out an individual license for each?

Your LR5 license allows for activated installations on two machines.  Of those two machine, only one can be using the licensed software at a given time.  The same applies with CC, except with CC you won't be able to sneak in the third machine.  What you can do though with CC is have it installed on all three and sign in and out of the different machines as needed.
If you intend to be using all three machines at the same time then you do need three separate licenses/subscriptions to be in compliance with the license agreement.

  • Cellular data being used even when at home with Wi Fi

I notice that sometimes (actually pretty often), my cellular data is being used even if I'm at home with Wi Fi available. At this rate, my monthly amount of gigabytes is getting used up pretty quickly. It's gotten to where I have to go into settings and turn off cellular data whenever I come home. Has anyone else had this problem?

You must be losing wifi sometimes. The iPad uses wifi, unless it's not available. Then it switches to 3/4G. Turning Off cellular is the best procedure.

  • My iPhone 5 is on wifi, but it's still using up data, help?

So I just upgraded to the iPhone 5 today which means that I just lost my unlimited data (insert depressing funeral music). And I figured that whenever I'm in my dorm, my house, or anywhere inside that there's a wifi connection, I'd just connect it to wifi to avoid using up extra data. This morning when I got the phone, I only had used .046GB, and I'm always browsing the internet/checking Facebook/blogging/etc. When I got home I connected to our wifi and downloaded some apps. It was on wifi the entire time, but the usage went up to .050 which was weird. Then I drove back to my dorm, connected to my wifi here, barely used any apps and it just went up to .060. What's going on? I'm pretty worried because our monthly billing cycle started a few days ago and if this goes on while I'm on wifi I'll get up to 2GB quick :/ also I always make sure to exit out of the apps/kill them after I'm done using them so they're not running in the background.
    Help :'(

I am having the same issue ~ I opened a discussion on it over the weekend. I tried calling VZ bit after 20 minutes of waiting, I gave up. I figured I'd try back after the iphone 5 rush would stop. I have had a 4 & never had this issue ~ I am VERY Aware of programs running in the background & push notifications, etc & what could be pulling data & everything is off. I've even noticed the data is being used when I (& the phone) are sleeping at 3 am, 5 am, etc.
I got a response from VZ this morning o e mail it seemed a "canned response" with no  explanantion:
"I hope you are having a great start to your week. I would like to begin by welcoming you to Verizon Wireless. This is really a great question and we certainly appreciate customers who keep such a close watch on their usage. When I compare the data records, it looks like data usage began to incur at the same time that your line and device was activated. I definitely still encourage you to use wifi as a great way to manage your data use (I do it myself when listening to music at work)."
Please let us all know what you find out with VZ regarding this issue.
    Thank you

  • Can I upgrade to OS 10.5 with this computer and still use OS 9 and more?

I am NO computer expert, so, I'm wondering if:
    1. Can I upgrade to OS 10.5 (currently using OS 10.3.9) with G4 computer using 450 MHz processor?
    2. Can I still use my old programs (ie Claris 4.0) that switch over to the OS 9 system?
    3. Will this upgrade my Safari so it doesn't quit when I try to make a simple reservation on the Holiday Inn website?
Or, is this just too old and obsolete and I need to get a new computer? I do not do complicated projects with lots of graphics. So far, I'm not having any trouble using my Kodak EasyShare digital camera with the computer. It's just that Safari that gives me trouble.
Any advice (upgrade vs new) will be appreciated.

Hi, lwbusdrvr. Leopard requires at least an 867MHz G4 processor. Yours is barely half that fast. Tiger would run on your computer, and it supports Classic and the current version of Safari.
But the simplest thing for you to do would be to download the free Camino 1.6.4 or Firefox 2.0.0.17 and use it instead of Safari, without needing to upgrade your OS at all. For links to downloads for each, see my post here.

  • Can I use "Maps" with WiFi anywhere (in Europe) without incurring data charges?

Hertz offers a mobile WiFi with a rental vehicle, and I'm wondering whether I can use "Maps" through that system?  Would I have to ensure network connections are off?  Appreciate any expertise on this one.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

You will experience no cost as long as you're on the wifi connection at all times. When I was in europe, my "data while roaming" option was set to off. I wouldn't use any data unless I was connected to a wifi hotspot somewhere, which are quite common in Europe.
To set the data services off while roaming, open up your settings. Go to Network Connections > Mobile Network. You can toggle your mobile network to off if you don't want to use your phone while in Europe or leave it on up to you but for data, use the drop down option and set it to Off. This way it won't use data over any mobile network and so only when using WiFi.

  • How do I use my time capsule as a wifi extender and still use as a backup in Time Machine

I purchased a new airport extreme and want to use my existing time capsule as a wifi extender in another part of the house.  How do I set this up so that I can still use the time capsule as my backup (time machine) hard drive?

    Hello BNOLTNER,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Please see the directions in the following article for configuring your extended network.  Your Time Capsule will still be seen on the network, and may still be used as a backup destination.
