When backing up LR catalog to an external drive, what do I copy?

Hi,
Let me explain what I'm doing with back ups for the LR catalog.  First I backup the catalog to the same drive my photos are on, simply to allow LR to access the catalog without having to power up an external drive.  That LR folder contains 1.) the LR catalog, 2.) a previews file (lrdata), and a backup labeled with the date of the backup.   At least once a week, however, I copy the LR file to an external hard drive, to another LR folder.  I notice when doing this that the entire catalog is transferred to the external drive each time I do the copy.
Question 1:  When doing a catalog backup to the photos folder, should I delete the previous backup?  I.e., I did a back up today;  on Saturday I'll probably do another.  Should I just save the last dated backup and delete the earlier dates?
Question 2:  Should I just copy the updates to the external drive?  Or is it more appropriate to copy the catalog, previews, and latest update?  It seems to me the latter is the best alternative, but perhaps it's not necessary.
Thanks much in advance,
BAB

there's really no right answer, but these are my recommendations
Do not make a backup of your catalog file to the same folder as the photos unless it is on a different physical hard disk than your working catalog. You can save as many backups as you want, the amount of insurance that you take out (the number of backups) is entirely up to you. I keep at least one month, and then some older catalogs as well.
I don't know what updates you are referring to, but there is no reason or benefit to copy/backup previews
Additional comments ... I strongly prefer an automated backup approach, that doesn't rely on a human being remembering and having the time to make a manual backup. Thus, I would recommend you have Lightroom automatically place the catalog backup on the external drive. I don't really know why you are opposed to powering up your external HD, that's what it was made for, to be used! Mine is powered on 100% of the time. Furthermore, if your backup to the photos folder is on the same hard drive as your working catalog, I would strongly recommend you not do this ... because the day that this disk fails (and it is 100% sure it will fail at some time in the future), you have lost your working catalog AND most recent backup and thus it is possible that you could lose nearly two weeks of work when this disk fails (and more if you just so happen to have forgotten to manually make copies to the external HD).
Additional comments 2 ... Nowhere have you mentioned making backups of all of your photos. I assume you are doing that, and if you're not, stop what you are doing, do not celebrate Hanuka or Thanksgiving, and make backups of all of your photos immediately. Of course, you might have been asking only about the catalog backups and you have done a thorough job of making backups of your photos, in which case ignore this paragraph

If I back up iMovie projects to an external drive does imovie  take the media with it? I want to free up space and remove pictures that were in iPhoto...that were used as media by iMovie when project was under way. In short I want archive iMovie stuff. If I pull pics out of iPhoto, and later want to drag an archived projet bac into iMovie and the pics are no longer in iPhoto, will I be able to keep working in the project in iMovie?

Very likely not, as the iPhoto's can be used for something else.
More like it took a copy, or it's referencing that spot on the drive in the editable files and most likely made a copy to create a new permanent export file.
Sample one picture and a iMovie file and see what happens.

I backed up my bookmarks to an external drive, rebuilt my system, and now when I try to restore from that file, I get "unsupported file type" How can I restore from this file?

Make sure that the backup file with the bookmarks has the correct file extension: .html for a HTML backup and .json for a JSON backup.<br />
You can check that via the right-click context menu of that file and open the Properties.<br />
If you are not sure about the file type then you can open the file in Firefox via "File > Open File"<br />
A JSON backup will show as one long text line without line breaks and a HTML backup as a web page with clickable links.<br />
    A JSON backup starts with: {"title":"","id":1,"dateAdded":<br />
An HTML backup starts with: <nowiki><!DOCTYPE NETSCAPE-Bookmark-file-1></nowiki>
You may need to add quotes ("") around the name to rename the file to the correct file extension.

    Hi
Just to clarify a couple of points in your post.
RAM (memory) is different from hard drive space. You have 4GB of RAM, but that has no bearing on the amount of drive space you have, of which we know that 79GB are photos.
If those photos are in iPhoto, you should be able to move the entire iPhoto Library, from the Pictures folder, to your external hard drive. You can just drag and drop. Do not have iPhoto open while you're doing this. Once it's done, you can double-click on the moved iPhoto Library file to associate it with iPhoto, so that the app remembers where the library is for next time.
One more thing. When you move a file to a different location, and then delete the original, you don't have a backup. You still only have one copy. So if that external drive dies, you will lose all your photos. Time Machine is a very good way to prevent this from happening. You should dedicate a different drive for Time Machine backups.

  • I am having trouble keeping the quality of my video when exporting to my external drive.  I change the kind to "original" but when I view the video from the external drive once exported, the sound and picture are distorted.

I am having trouble keeping the quality of my video when exporting to my external hard drive.  I have tried to export from iphoto with changing kind to "original" but when I open the video from the external drive the quality is effected.  I have also tried copying the video to my desktop and then dragging and dropping onto the drive...same problem. Any suggestions?  I would like to save everything to my external drive so that I can delete all of iphoto library and then reimport to correct a few things.

The file sizes are identical.  In the finder I did a search for all .mov files.  Then when they came up, I went through them and named each one so that they would be easier to find.  I am a new mac user and am used to windows.  I realized later that I should not have done this....with a mac files should be named within iphoto app...not finder....When I went to open the videos in iphoto, it wouldn't allow me.  I had to go into finder, copy to desktop and reimport into iphoto.  Then the videos worked again.  However, I had the problem with the poor video quality when copied to external drive before that.  Actually the first problem I had was when I copied to ext drive...videos were copying as an image...so I learned that you have to change "kind" to original before exporting....then that problem was solved...now they are videos, not images but not of a great quality.  Skips, sound and images are not in sync...etc...

I have catalog on an external drive but the tags are on the computer. Is there any way that tags can be placed on the external drive so that other computers can access and update?

In case its just the tags that you want to have in one catalog that is easy. From multiple computers save the tags to the xml file.Copy the xml file to the external drive where the catalog resides. From there you can import the tags into the catalog.
Command for exporting tags ->Save tags to file in the tags panel of the application
    Command for importing tags->From file

My Mac Mini does not boot, after backing the enire system onto an external drive with Carbon Copy Clone. I had switched the start-up disk back to the original of course. Now all I see is the Apple logo. What should I do? Thanks in advance.

Try disconnecting any external devices, especially hard drives
    and try rebooting.
If that doesn't help, then :
If you are running Lion, boot to the Recovery HD and run a
Repair Disk on the OSX partition.
If Snow Leopard, boot to the installl DVD and run Repair Disk.

When I plug in my Lacie (thunderbolt) External Drive it doesn't show up on the desktop. I need to move some stuff out of my hard drive to make room. I have very little room left on the hard drive and need to move an iPhoto library.

i have a lacie, and i encrypted it.  i had to wipe it, because it kept dropping off over and over and re-logging in.  so unencrypted i went.
at some point it wasn't recognized at all.  sometimes disk utility would open it, but then it got to the point that it wouldn't recognize it either.
i hadn't realized that the power supply was dysfunctional.  but i was able to recover it using disk warrior at the last deep breath it took.  the disk itself still works, but not in that housing.

  • The MacBook Pro will not allow me to cut-and-paste to and from or to click-and-drag to the external drive. I can copy-and-paste, but then I must send the original to the trash, which doubles the time and effort. Is there any way to cut-and-paste?

I have recently switched from a PC to a MacBook Pro.
I have a large number of documents and photographs on a multiterrabite external drive, backed up on a second multiterrabite external drive.
Both external drives are formatted for MacIntosh. This has been verified by agents at an Apple store and also at Best Buy in two different cities.
    This is the problem:
The MacBook Pro will not allow me to cut-and-paste to and from or to click-and-drag to the external drive. I can copy-and-paste, but then I must send the original to the trash, which doubles the time and effort. Is there any way to cut-and-paste?
Also, the MacBook Pro will not allow me to rename multiple documents or photographs. I can click-and-rename a single one, but this is impossibly time consuming. I can batch-rename in iPhoto, but when I transfer the photographs to the external drive, the rename does not transfer.
I’m reduced to using my wife’s Toshiba to cut-and-past, rename, and transfer documents. It works perfectly. Is there any way to do this on the MacBook Pro?
    Thanks!

No, this is a philosophical difference between Apple and Microsoft. Apple believes that it's dangerous to cut a file in case the user never pastes it; in that case the file is lost. Microsoft seems to not have this problem (if I remember Windows correctly) because they don't delete the originating file if it's cut but never pasted.
Even though Macs have a lot of keyboard shortcuts, philosophically Macs have traditionally been mouse-first. This applies to file copy operations. In your case, what a Mac user would do is open the source window, open the destination window (on your second drive), and then Command-drag the selected files from the source to destination window. This is because a normal drag would leave the originals behind, while adding the Command modifier key tells OS X that this is a Move, not a Copy, so don't leave the originals behind.
(In addition there are different rules for drag-copying within the same volume or between different volumes. If you drag between two folders on the same volume, the files are moved. If you drag between different volumes, the files are copied unless you hold down Command to delete the copies on the source volume.)

Two problems in this case. First, batch file renaming is not built into OS X unless you build something with Automator. However, there are many utilities that can do batch file renaming which you can find at macupdate.com or on the App Store. Since I work with media I often batch rename using one of the media managers I have lying around like Media Pro or Adobe Bridge (comes with Photoshop).
iPhoto is a database front end designed to shield the file system from the consumer and let them concentrate on creativity and sharing. As such it is often a poor choice for managing files directly. When you "transferred the photographs" chances are you moved the originals, not the ones iPhoto edited which are stored in a hidden folder.

There will not be a way to do it exactly like Windows. As described above, there are ways to do it "the Mac way." If it is possible to remove judgment on which way is "better" you might find the Mac way to be acceptable, but of course sometimes we simply prefer what we're used to.

Yes you can store images on an external hard dive and have them referenced in Organizer. It’s best to export copies to separate folders/subfolders and that will ensure iPhoto does not get corrupted.
Alternatively you could continue to use iPhoto with the Elements Editor set up in the iPhoto prefs as your external editing app. Then there is no need to use Organizer and no need to duplicate your images.
You can then call up photos directly from iPhoto as normal with the additional option e.g.
Double-click on a thumbnail to edit in iPhoto editor.
Control (right) - click on a thumbnail to edit in the elements app.
