When backing up the MAC on Time machine does it back up your emails also?

Does time machiene back up emails also when doing a standard backup.  I use icloud?

Thanks
Chad

If the emails are stored on cloud, then no, Time Machine will backup what is on your local hard disk and that is all.
If you need mails backed up, then you need to ensure they are copied to your local hard disk.. I think you will need to ask this question in mail how to ensure mail program creates a local copy of the mails.
Apple will of course backup their servers.. so you will not lose your mails en masse.. but if you delete them and then scrub them from the delete box you will not be able to recover them via time machine.

  • When I restore my mac in time machine, does it restore drive partititions

    OK so heres my story.
I had XP on a partion on my mac running through boot camp. I didn't have any vital information so I decided to just delete the partition and start over with windows 7. I deleted the partition with disk utility instead of the bootcamp assistant. I guess thats a no no! The partition is now gone but I didn't gain the extra 20 gb of storage back. I tried sliding the box in disk utility to gain more hard drive space but it says it failed do to some file error. I was told I have to restore my entire drive.
I just backed up my computer after this happened so my question is this: If I restore my laptop with the most current backup, will I still have the same problem on the hard drive or will it automatically give me my 20 GB back. How should I go about restoring my computer safely and not having any partitions on my primary drive?
    Thanks,
    Caleb

you should do the following. boot from the snow leopard DVD, start disk utility and reformat the whole internal drive. select the whole drive (model, not name), click on the partition tab. set the number of partitions to 1 and hit apply. once3 the partitioning is done quit disk utility and slect "restore system from backup" from the Utilities menu. proceed with the restore. this will restore your system onto the full drive.

I guess if stolen or lost it would protect my "stuff", and if I'm travelling would protect my privacy.
You must understand the purpose and implications of encryption before deciding whether to use it.
Encryption locks your data with a password. If you forget that password, the data is lost beyond any chance of recovery. Neither Apple nor anyone else will be able to help you recover that data if you don't know the password.
By the same token, the password must be strong enough to provide the security you want. For example, if you're the potential target of industrial espionage by a government or large corporation, you need the strongest possible password. To create and manage such a password safely is a task in itself, not to be undertaken lightly.
If you're only concerned about casual snooping by someone with no special skill, a weak, easily-remembered password is appropriate.
But regardless of the strength of the password, if you lose it, the data is gone forever.
Another point to remember is that if you encrypt your data on one storage device, you must also encrypt it on all other storage devices that would be accessible to the same attacker. Otherwise the data isn't protected. For example, if you keep your computer and your backup drive in the same room, and the internal drive of the computer is not encrypted, then there's no point in encrypting the backup drive.

Make sure that there are no other Macs backing up at the present time.
Pull the power cord from the back of the Time Capsule
    Count to ten
Plug the power cord back in
This will "fix" things about 98% of the time. Post back if you are in the unlucky 2% category.

  • Time machine does not back up iPhoto in mountain lion ?

My Time Machine does not back up my iPhoto library. When I open Time Machine I get Desktop display going back to installation date.
All other applications respond correctly including Mail, Contacts, etc. My Seagate drive is not involved in the present programme of repair I have been told by Apple. Any ideas?

I'm now fixed and done (update to latest software and learn how to use it)
Thanks again Ivan for the article, it alerted me to otherwise incomprehensible changes in iPhoto/Time Machine operation such as in my case would transfer 3.8GB of data to restore a single photo, while apparently loosing all photos added after that backup time.
    However the article says:
When using iPhoto ’11 (version 9.2 or later) and Time Machine with OS X Lion 10.7.2 (or later), iPhoto no longer has the Browse Backups option. This means that instead of restoring specific photos within your iPhoto Library, you must restore your entire iPhoto Library.
This may be practically true but it is technically false.
To restore a single photo in iPhoto '11 with Time Machine it goes something like this:
Start with your Time Machine hard drive and navigate many steps (including showing package contents where necessary) all the way through to the photo/date you want. Drag it to your desktop. (Do not make any edits in Time Machine!)  Import to iPhoto. Click on last import in iPhoto. Right click the photo and change the event name, then look for it at the right date in iphoto with the new event name.
Hopefully those with more time and patience can check this out and see what it can do. I had to do it twice with Apple suport senior tech to get it. What a pain compared to iPhoto' 09 but at least now I can restore iPhoto library or a photo if necessary.

I remember that with Snow Leopard you could download them from the Apple website.

  • Time Machine - does not back up

Hello - I am new to Time Machine and have spent the last few hours trying to figure out why it is not backing up to my new 1TB hard drive.
I have followed the steps in Mac 101: TM and also looked into the FAQs and have done the following:
FAQ #5 - erase and format with the Disk Utility App
A4. Full Reset of Time Machine
    hard reset and deleting the
but I always get the same result:
    - time machine is turned ON, the lock is unlocked for me to change things
    - when i choose "back up now" from the menu bar, nothing happens. the status from the menu bar says "automatic backups off" and it also says that in the Next Backup line of the TM program.
    - i start a backup by "select disk" and chose my Time machine and "Use for backup"....then the "next backup" line does a countdown from 120 seconds until one second....and thing nothing!
it just keeps one second until i click again on the time machine program and then it switches to "automatic backups off".
time machine buddy widget says "no time machine information found"
i have no idea what to try next but really would like to be able to use this feature.
    thanks so much,

I have no idea what to try next.

Check the +Exclude these items from backups+ box in TM Preferences > Options. See if your internal HD is listed there, or anything else (besides, of course, your TM drive) that might be preventing backups.
Try the +Back Up Now+ again, while the TM Preference display is on the screen. Even if something is preventing the automatic backups, that should start something.
Watch the area where it shows *Next Backup.* You should get a series of status-type messages and a progress bar there, even if only briefly.

  • Meverckics time machine does not back up wiki

I am using a Mac Pro mid 2013 as a server for my team.  I use it only for wiki (no other service like mail server or website host). I started using in October 2013. December 2013, the Time Machine informed me that it runs out of space (my working HD is 1 TB, at that time it is more than 500 Gb in use. The HD for Time Machine is 3TB). I just let the Time Machine keep running ( it said that it woud arrange to delete old backups to make room for new ones).
Yesterday, the wiki database is corrupted and I fully restore from TM. to my horror, the wiki is only restored to December 2013. Which means we lost the works of the last 6 months.  I check the backup files in Time Machine and found out that the last wiki database (Library/Server/Wiki) was updated to December 2013 only, even though other files were updated to yesterday. I checked the TM preference and wiki database is not in list of files excluding from backing up.
    My questions:
    1. Does any one know why the Time Machine doesn't back up wiki while it backs up other files?
    2. In future, how can I prevent this happen again?
    3. Can I recover the works of last six months (in other words, does Mavericks server keep wiki database where else other than Library/Server/Wiki?
    many thanks in advance!

  • Time Machine does not back up all iTunes music files

Hello, I'm trying to view the music files, on my Time Machine backup disc, from a CD that I recently imported into iTunes. My iTunes library resides on my hard drive. The backup disc shows files for some of the other music that is in my iTunes library, but not from the new CD. I did several backups after importing the new music, but the song files still do not show up in Time Machine. Any ideas for why the files don't show up?
My ultimate aim is to copy those music files onto another computer, but my research on the support pages suggests that I should not do it this way. Instead, I will copy the music files onto another disc (not using Time Machine) and then import them onto the other computer. Please confirm that this is the best way to proceed.
But in the meantime, I'm wondering why Time Machine does not show my newly imported music.
Thanks very much for any help you can provide.

    New formulation of my question:
A file dated at 10:00 may not appear in the back-up dated 11:00.

  • When I restore my Mac with Time Machine and then want to partition my disk, Disk Utility always says incorrect number of extended attributes

When I need to restore my Mac from a time machine backup and then partition my hard disk (the disk inside the computer not the time machine disk), Disk Utility always says "Incorrect Number of Extended Attributes". I then boot into Recovery HD and run disk repair. The result? "The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK". So then I reboot into normal OS and try the partition again, still Incorrect number of extended attributes. I have even tried /sbin/fsck -fy in single-user mode but it still says the volume is ok. I have tried partition my disk in the recovery HD and it still fails.
Can anyone please help me solve this problem?

Try something stronger, such as DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro.

  • Can I keep working on my mac while Time Machine does its first back up?

Just wanting to double check before I do anything I am sorry about. I am getting ready to do my first Time Machine back-up. I have my documents all backed up with an on line service, but feel like I need to back up the whole system (better safe than sorry) and will back up to an external hard drive. I have plenty of space as I have about 60GB to back up on a 320GB drive. I know after the first backup it will only back up changes or additions to my mac and I will probably not notice anything, but is there anything I should be watching out for during this first time?
    Thank you
    laverne's mom

Thanks for your quick response. I expect it will take a while for it to complete. It took a little more than two days for just the documents to be backed up. I'll give it a good long time before I panic.

  • HT201250 I am doing an initial back up of my files, which looks like it's going to take 3-4 days because of photos. If I turn off the computer in the middle of the download to Time Machine, does this delete everything that has been backed up so far? Thnx.

I am about halfway done uploading files to Time Machine. However, because I have a lot of photos, the upload is taking days. If I turn off my computer, will I lose the files that have been uploaded so far?
    Thanks!

How much is on your system, what are you backing-up to, and how is it connected?  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #29 for a rough idea of how long it should take.
If I turn off my computer, will I lose the files that have been uploaded so far?
If you turn it off, doubtful, but the backups may need to be repaired, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
If you cancel the backup, no. But they'll be mostly inaccessible until a backup does complete normally.
They're in an 'in.Progress" package on the backup drive; when you start another backup, Time Machine will start over, but it won't re-copy all that data.  It will take quite a while, and appear to be backing-up quite slowly, as it recovers those files.
If you're backing-up to a TIme Capsule, connect via Ethernet cable if at all possible -- it will still take a long time (20-25 GBhour) but be much faster and more reliable than via WIFI.

  • If i back up my mac using Time Machine and an external hard-drive, can that same hard-drive be used on another computer and on a PC?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated
    thanks

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can do it, but it's not recommended to use a Time Machine volume to store other files. In this case, you can create a second volume on the external drive, so you will be able to use it to store data and transfer it to other PCs.
As you are going to use the external drive with other PCs, you can make the volume and format it in "MS-DOS (FAT)" with Disk Utility > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU3.html Finally, you will be able to copy files to the external drive.
If you copy files to a Time Machine disk, you may damage the Time Machine file structure, so you shouldn't do it. It may not happen, but it's better not to try that. Also, you won't be able to read the Time Machine drive in a PC
