When changing computers...?

Next week I will be getting a new computer which also will involve moving from Vista to Win7 Pro.   I'm wondering if there are any suggestions as to which files I can transfer over (besides the site files) to make this easier. I'm not sure if I can copy an extentions folder or if I need to reinstall them, or any other folders that might be transferable.
I only have CS5 installed on my Vista computer so I believe I'm fine to also install it on W7P in case I need to go back and grab something. I will still have my old pc.
If you could provide locations to the folders that would be awesome, but even just an idea of what can be copied over would be helpful.   I'm planing on exporting my site configurations so I can just import them with the site, but anything else related to moving my DW CS5 files would be great.
Thanks.

1.  Export the site definitions from Vista box and save them on W7 box.  After installing DW on W7, IMPORT the site defs.
2.  Copy the USER Configurations folder from Vista box (C:/Users/<name>/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Dreamweaver CS5.5/en_US/) and save on W7 box.  I usually copy out the snippets, workspace, and server behaviors into a new installation each time.
That should be all you need to do other than getting the site files over.

  • Workflow when changing computers

I have changed computers from where I was working yesterday so everything I needed was copied onto a harddrive.
The sequence settings are exactly the same, I just had to reconnect all the clips. Now whenever I move anything or make amendments it renders. It's taking about 5minutes to render a 5 second clip. what can I do?

Thanks for your replies. How does the media manager work?
I changed the RT settings to safe and it stopped asking me to render etc? But the Mac I'm using now is Mac OS X 10.6.7 and the project is in a sony code.
The problem I am still having is it is taking ages to export anything. The videos are only 4 minutes or so and are taking 30mins to export. It is also a green screen project and once exported, there is green showing up that isn't apparent in FCP?

  • Muse missing assets when changing computers.

I have a Creative Cloud subscription.  I have Muse installed on my Mac (desktop) and my MacBook (laptop).  I have a website for which I store the Muse file and all of the assets in my Creative Cloud account (I do not store them locally on my machines).  When I make changes to the Muse file on one machine and then save them to the Creative Cloud, when I open that file on the other machine, I get an error telling me that many of my assets are missing and need to be relinked.  The assets have not been moved and are in the same location in my Creative Cloud account files.  It doesn't happen with all of my assets, but happens with a number of them...and it seems to be the same ones over and over.  If the two computers are using the same "Cloud" files and both are synced with the Creative Cloud account, why is this happening?
Thanks for any advice you can give!

Still trying to understand the setup here.
"I have a website for which I store the Muse file and all of the assets in my Creative Cloud account". So the files are hosted by a webhosting provider? I assmume you ftp them up to the server of your hosting provider.
"When I make changes to the Muse file on one machine and then save them to the Creative Cloud". Are you uploading files to https://creative.adobe.com? Are you using Creative Cloud Connection and having the files in your Creative Cloud Files folder sync up to the website?
"when I open that file on the other machine, I get an error telling me that many of my assets are missing and need to be relinked". How did the files get to the other machine? Did you download them from https://creative.adobe.com? Did you let them sync to your Creative Cloud Files folder? Did you use ftp to download them from your webhosting provider?

  • Backed up mail files but lost messages when changing computers

I just switched computers, from one running OS X 10.3.9 to one running OSX 10.4.9.
On my old computer I created different folders in which I stored my emails. The Help on Mail said that to backup I had to save the files on
    Home > Library > Mail
Home > Library > Application Support > Address Book
    Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.mail.plist
I did that and moved these files into the corresponding location in the new computer. I can see all the folders, but they are all empty. Have I lost my saved emails forever?

The folders in the Mail application are empty. So the folders transferred, but the emails I had stored in them didn´t.
On the backups I made I can see:
    - In the Home>Library>Mail folder:
    1- a file named DefaultCounts
    2- a file named LSMMap
    3- a file named LSMMap2
    4- a file named MessageSorting.plist
    5- a file named MessageSorting.plist.backup
    6- a file named Signatures.plist
7- a folder named Mailboxes with a folder named like each of the folders I had created in Mail (which are all empty), and a folder named like each of the folders I had created in Mail, next to the folder name is the extension .mbox. And inside each one of these are 4 files named content_index, Info.plist, mbox, tableofcontents
8- a folder named POPmypopaccountname which contains folders named Inbox.mbox, Delete Messages.mbox, Drafts.mbox, Sent Messages.mbox. Each one of these has 4 files named content_index, Info.plist, mbox, tableofcontents. This folder also has a file named MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded

That really does not work since music is not included in the backup.  See:

I Have iTunes since 2008. I have changed computers and I know have old libraries in my Hard Disk but iTunes do not locate a lot of songs when I try to play it. How can I correct this situation?

When iTunes say that try to find the file you want iTunes to play in your iTunes > Media folder.  If iTunes offers to find others, let it. If it does not find them all you will have to find them yourself or re-add the files from your drive to iTunes (use Automatically Add to iTunes folder).
iTunes 9: Understanding the "Automatically Add to iTunes" folder. - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3832 - Files put into this folder are actually moved from this folder onto the correct location in the iTunes Media folder.

  • When I changed computers, my IPAD did not get the apps that I had downloaded or purchased. It did get my calendar, music and related items.

When I changed computers, my IPADII did not get the apps I had purchased when synching. It did get themusic, calendar and related items. I tired Restore, but that did not work. what do you suggest?

I would try first in iTunes right clicking on your iPad and selecting "Transfer Purchases from iPad". This will add any new downloads from your iPad to your computer. Then click on the iPad and at the top choose Apps and make sure you have "Sync Apps" checked. I hope that helps.

  • I have a Nano, where I changed computers and moved my library.  Now my nano doesn't recognize the location or the song on the nano.  How do I update my library so the nano will recognize.

I  have an IPOD Nano.  I had it originally set up on another computer where I would down load my songs that I purchased from ITunes.  My Nano would sync up with my PC when I would plug it in.  I had to change computers, so I moved all my songs / library to my new PC.  I downloaded the ITunes process to my new PC and then purchased a song.  I saw the song in my download area of my PC under ITunes Media / downloads.  However, my nano would not sync as it is still referencing the prior location, which was on my old PC.  I moved the song directly to the Nano when it was plugged in.  I see the song on the Nano directory when I have it plugged in to the PC via the USB cable.  I even click on the song and I hear it play from the Nano on the PC.  However, when I go to look for the song directly from my song listing from the Nano music screen, it doesn't list he song or the artist as being on the Nano.
I have tried to follow the online instructions for erase and sync the old library to the new, but that doesn't happen.  Any suggestions on what I may be doing wrong in moving from one PC to another.  Seems to me this should be a much simplier process.  But I find working with Apple products they are all harder to deal with.  I would appreciate your help.
    Mel

I am not doing it in ITunes, but i did down load the song from ITunes.  I loaded the song on to my Nano, but in my menu selections it doesn't show the song or the artist in any search format.  However, when i plug in my nano to my PC I see the Nano library on my PC drive listings and that song and artist are there.  I can click on the song and it will play in Windows media on my work PC.  I did notice that the format for most all the songs in my library on my Nano are MPEG - 4 audio Files.
    Thanks for your help, Mel

  • I have the iPhone 4. I recently switched from PC to IMac. I am trying to sync my iPhone, but iTunes will not let me add or remove anything. Do I need to change a setting since I changed computers? Help!

I have the iPhone 4. I recently switched from PC to IMac. I am trying to sync my iPhone, but iTunes will not let me add or remove anything. Do I need to change a setting since I changed computers? I try to add songs from my music into my phone section and it will not go... Plus the playlists on my phone are not updated on my iTunes phone on my computer. Its like it never updated. What am I doing wrong??

Iphone will sync with one computer at a time.
When you sync to another it will delete the current content.
Make sure you have copied everything from your old computer to your new one first.

  • On my windows Itunes I changed computers and ended up with two of every song. How do I delete the duplicates without doing it one at a time?

I have duplicates of all the songs on my windows 7 computer.  I changed computers and ended up with duplicates of all of my songs. How can I delete them all without having to do it one at a time? thanks!

Apple's official advice is here... HT2905 - How to find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls.
Use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items to display duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created.  If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin.
Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See this thread for background and please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping.

  • Changing computers, can't "see" my files on IPod menu, but I can in windows

I changed computers, and followed the directions, essentially: used my ipod as a disk to move files from old laptop to new laptop. Did all the steps of consolidating files etc. OK, no problem. Then I can see all the music on Itunes on new laptop. Restore and reset IPod and then synchronized. Files load to the IPod (I can see on the IPod when I view outside of ITunes (i.e. windows explore). But, when I try to play or view any files going through the IPod menus, there isn't anything there, nothing in music, podcasts, videos, nothing. If I plug the IPod into the old laptop, restore, and synch, everything is fine. I've tried this about 4 times and cannot get this to work. What am I doing wrong?

Copied media files to a HPFS+ (journaled) SimpleTech USB drive connected to my iMac. Files copied fine and can be accessed from the iMac with no problems.
I connect it to the TC, the drive can be seen and mounted over the network but the files do not show up. The free space corresponds to the free space left by the files I had copied--but again the files do not show up.
TC file sharing is on and is working fine as demonstrated by access to the internal drive without problem. And the USB drive shows up in the airport utility without error indication. Files copied over the network to the USB drive are accessible as expected (read/write/delete--no problem).
    Any advice?
    Thanks,
    Mark

  • Changing computers &  transfer purchases?

I am in the process of switching from a desktop PC to a MacBook Pro as my main iTunes computer. However, when I used Home Sharing to copy the files, I didn't copy all of them (I didn't want some songs anymore). Will this do anything to my iPod?
Also, I have been buying a few songs from my iPod on the iTunes app, so it has several songs that are not in my main iTunes, as they were purchased on the iPod itself. I know how to transfer the purchases, but coupled with the first problem (switching computers), how do I go about transferring this?
Basically, I want to change computers (with less songs on the new comp's iTunes than on the iPod) and transfer my purchases. How would I tackle this double duty problem?
    Thanks!

iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music [library] to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the new location of the library.
Your iPod is only going to want to sync with one library at a time.  It will likely see your Mac library as a brand new library and want to wipe the ipod, then replace the content with whatever you tell it to use on the new Mac.  Easiest would be to copy the whole library are instructed above, then delete content you do not want.
