When closed lid, drive tries ejecting cd that isnt there

hi just starting yesterday i noticed when i close the lid on my macbook it tries to eject a cd like every 15 seconds even though there isnt even a cd in the drive. its really annoying and it chews up my battery really quickly.
i repaired and verified disk permissions and it still didnt help. im using 10.5.7 and have never had any issues with my macbook since i got it in january.

I suspect that something is causing a restart on your MacBook when it tries to enter sleep. You can check this by just putting your MacBook into sleep mode without closing the lid. If the MacBook reboots instead of going into sleep then you've isolated this problem.

  • MacBook Pro crashes when closing lid while in windows 8.1

I use a late-2011 MacBook Pro with Mavericks for work and run Windows 8.1 as my daily driver via Boot Camp. I've been running this setup for about a month without incident, but within the past week whenever I close the laptop it starts acting really weird. Normally it has alway just gone into sleep mode with the white LED on the front of the base pulsing slowly, and when I open it back up (even after a day or two) it snaps right back to action.
When I got home from work one day about a week ago I noticed that the computer was completely turned off, and when I booted it back up it went to OSX (I have it set to boot into Windows by default). I didn't initially think anything of it, but I soon realized that every time I closed the lid it was crashing. After closer examination I saw that the white LED wasn't flashing after closing the lid and that I could hear the fans still running. Oddly enough everytime I open it immediately after seeing this occur, the LED starts blinking when the lid is open yet the screen is black, the computer is unresponsive, and yet the fans are still humming. Eventually the computer just turns itself off completely. I've tested the same sequence of events while in OSX, yet everything works as it should: the LED illuminates immediately after closing the lid and the computer is fully operational the moment I open the lid.
I haven't made any major changes or performed any sort of updates since setting everything up initially, so I'm completely baffled as to why this is occuring. I've tried to reinstall/repair the Boot Camp drivers while in Windows, but to no avail. I'm at a total loss... I defintely am hoping to avoid having to wipe my fully configured windows installation and starting from scratch. Has anyone experienced anything like this and hopefully have any suggestions? Thanks!

I would be looking at the Quad core MBP for Parallels. A Quad-core vs Dual-Core is not a fair comparison.
For the same CPU, the two bottlenecks for Parallels are RAM and disk speed.
You will see an improvement if you max out the RAM and the disk speed. The SSD in the MBP will be much faster than the HDD in the iMac.

  • Disable Sleep Mode When Closing Lid

Is it possible to disable this? It is really inconvenient and annoying. I don't want my computer open on my desk when its simply playing music or streaming media. Also, sleep obviously logs me off instant messengers. This is also inconvenient when moving rooms and such. You have to then restart downloads, relogin, or carry it around open. This would seem simple and an easy setting to switch, but I have as yet not been able to find it. I know this exists on my PC laptop so I'm assumging Mac has a similar function? I'm not sure this is my first Mac. Thanks for any help with this issue.

I haven't used more than one PC laptop (my Dell XPS) but it gives you the option to select what you want it to do when the lid gets closed and you also have the option of what you want it to do when you press the power button (just like all of our computers do, which are all Dells, other than my 2 Macs).
The settings for Windows (as this is probably just a part of the OS and not company specific) let you have your "Sleep" option, "Hibernate" option, "Shutdown" option and the "Ask Me What To Do" option (also with the standard options of: select # of minutes until Screensaver, Turning off the Monitor/Display, and Turning off the Hard Drive). So you can set it so that your system always sleeps when you hit the power button when it is already turned on, or that it always asks what you want it to do. And then for the laptop lid being closed, you can set it to your system staying on, it going to sleep, it hibernates... etc, so that you can cater it all to what you want it to be like, your needs....
If there is one thing that I would like to see in the future for Macs, this feature would be it (well I have a few I would like to see). The networking aspect (joining up to a -possibly Windows- home network easily) and other customization features of the look and feel of the OS are the other main 2.
I love using WindowsBlinds and other skinning software, to change the look and feel, and the option to change how the main menu bar looks and acts which I do think could be harder -possibly?- for a Mac as the menu changes with each application that is the *currently focused* window compared to Windows just adding in a tab to the bar with the window's name and you get all the "menu info" from inside the tabbed window instead... If applications like this do exist for OSX, I would love to hear about them...

  • KDE: Laptop only sleeps when closing lid every other time

    Hello all,
I'm running KDE 4.14.1 on an older Toshiba Satellite laptop. In the KDE System Settings, I've told it to sleep when closing the lid and this works - but strangely only every other time I close the lid. It will work once, then I open the lid and it powers up just fine. Then I close it again and the screen just turns off but the laptop stays fully powered.
Any ideas what might be going on? It consistently only sleeps every other time when I close the lid (the other times it just turns the screen off).

    Take a look at /etc/systemd/logind.conf
Is systemd also trying to manage this?

    HI,
    Try resetting the SMC.

  • MBP Core 2 Duo randomly restarts when closing lid

Randomly my 2.33 Core 2 Duo restarts when closing the lid instead of going to sleep.
A real pain when your in the middle of something
    Anyone know a fix ?
Recently had a new logic board (due to faulty graphics card) and hoped this might also cure the restart at sleep problem. Did not.
    Advice welcome.
    Thanks

I would suggest you to reset the power manager to check whether the issue resolves. If the issue persists please contact Apple Authorized Service provider for further troubleshooting.
In this case I suspect the logic board or may be the sensors as a issue but to confirm it is always good to contact an AASP for further troubleshooting.
To reset the Power manager refer this article http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303319

Somehow, after rebooting, this problem is gone. So next time, I will try a reboot first. Thanks!

  • [solved] Kernel panic (?) when closing lid or undocking thinkpad t61p

    Hello,
I have a thinkpad t61p connected to the advanced mini-dock. I also have an external monitor connected to the DVI port. When I press the "Eject request" button on the dock, the green led starts to blink and then stops blinking. After this the laptop is totally freezed, with sound looping over and over again from the speakers.
Worth noting is that I can undock with no problems from the console (no X server running). This seems to indicate that this is an issue with the nvidia drivers?
This seems also be the case with the laptop freezing when I close the lid while X is running.
    I'm running 2.6.30.6-1 kernel and nvidia 185.18.36-1.
Any ideas what's causing this? Should I report this to nvidia, lenovo or ... ?

  • [SOLVED] Laptop doesn't suspend anymore when closing lid [GNOME 3]

    Hi there!
Since I upgraded to GNOME 3 recently, my laptop (Acer Aspire TimelineX 3820TG) doesn't suspend anymore when I close the lid. Instead, it just turns off the screen. If I choose suspend from the menu, it does suspend properly.
I googled a bit and found out that the option what to do on closing the lid was dropped in GNOME 3, setting suspend as default action. That's exactly what I want...
Also, I checked that option via gnome-tweak-tool and dconf-editor, and (surprise!) it was set to 'suspend'.
Anyone got an idea what to do to make it suspend again on closing the lid?

Sorry to bother you again, but for some reason it doesn't work anymore...
Somehow it can't lock the GNOME session, because when I enter the above line from /etc/acpi/handler.sh manually as root in TTY1, I get this error:
** Message: Failed to get session bus: Befehlszeile »dbus-launch --autolaunch=c9375f4ea0008d92177b28db000009ae --binary-syntax --close-stderr« brach mit von Null verschiedenem Beenden-Status 1 ab: No protocol specified\nAutolaunch error: X11 initialization failed.\n
If I enter this command inside GNOME, everything works just fine, it locks the screen and suspends.
    EDIT:
Setting the XAUTHORITY environment variable properly did the trick. Therefore, I borrowed some lines from here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Su … losing_lid

  • Macbook pro does not go to sleep when closing lid

    Hi,
I'm having a weird problem with my macbook pro. When I close the lid, my macbook does not go to sleep. Even more weird: when I put my macbook to sleep using cmd + alt + the eject button or using the apple button => sleep, my macbook stops sleeping as soon as I close the lid
It seems like this problem occured after installing the Nosleep extension for mac (http://code.google.com/p/macosx-nosleep-extension/). I already deleted that program and rebooted, but that did not help.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}' | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    { sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix\.cron)|org\.(amav|apac|cups|isc|ntp|postf|x)/{print $3}'; echo; sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook; echo; sudo crontab -l; } 2> /dev/null | open -ef
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    { launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'; echo; crontab -l 2> /dev/null; } | open -ef
    Step 4
    ls -A /e*/{cr,la,mach}* {,/}Lib*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts .la* 2> /dev/null | open -ef
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of login items' | open -ef
Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • I removed an app from my iPhone, but when syncing, it keeps trying to copy that app back to iTunes.  And then it sits, trying to copy it back but it never finishes.

I downloaded Battery Doc Free to my iPhone.  Liked it, so I downloaded Battery Doc Pro.  I then removed Battery Doc Free from my iPhone.  Now when I sync, it keeps trying to copy Battery Doc Free back to iTunes.  And just sits there in that state.  Any ideas as to how to remedy this?  The app doesn't show under Apps either on my device or Apps under Library in iTunes, but it keeps trying to copy it back!
    Thanks in advance.

Delete all the Battery apps from your phone, also delete all Battery apps from your iTunes library(if any are shown in your library), when prompted, move all files to trash, empty your trash, then restart iTunes. Go up to iTunes>Preferences(under the edit menu if using Windows)>Devices>Prevent iPods/iPhones from syncing automatically...put a check in that box. Connect your phone, iTunes running, right-click in the left device pane & select "Reset Warnings". Hit the sync button...if you get a popup that iTunes has detected purchased content on your phone not in your iTunes library, asking if you want to transfer, DECLINE. You should get a warning that this content will be erased from your phone, click OK. Eject your phone when finished. Re-download the Battery Pro app to your iTunes library(you can re-download purchased apps for free). Once complete, sync it to your phone.

  • Logging out when closing lid

For some reason my MacBook has logged out when I closed the lid a couple of times instead of going to sleep. The battery was at about 50% charge the last time it happened. Anyone else have this happen?

Ok, I realized for it to log out I have to have my computer go to sleep. I usually only have the display go to sleep b/c I heard it is bad to have you computer set to go to sleep that often. So there is really no way for me to make someone have to log in without putting my computer to sleep, or logging off and closing all my apps. ??

  • A word of caution when closing lid of MBP (late 2008) and placing in bag

Over the years, all the previous Mac Books I've owned went to sleep almost immediately I closed the lid. With the Unibody MBP late 2008,I thought this was no different. Until one day I arrived back home, unzipped the bag to find both fans going full tilt and a MBP very hot under the collar! It appears that the fans will continue to run until the temperature has dropped to an acceptable level even though the lid is closed and the display is off.
The moral of this ramble is to wait until the light on the front starts to pulse before placing your MBP in bag. Thankfully there was no visible damage to the MBP, but, if it had been left any longer, could have ended up with a cracked display or worse, a battery fire!

Safe Sleep is the process of writing the RAM contents to the hard disk, which occurs after you close the lid and before the light starts to pulse. It's actually been a feature of Mac portables since the PowerBook G4 (Double-Layer SD), in late 2005. All MacBooks, MBPs, and MBAirs have had it since day 1. That's what you're interrupting when you move the computer before the light starts to pulse, which can cause an unexpected subsequent wake up.
Apple warns against moving a portable computer before the light begins pulsing:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA25026
Note that the more RAM you have, the longer the process takes.

  • Crash when closing lid

    hi,
My Macbook pro crashes when I close the lid. The front light does not pulse... etc... Same behavior for all the users on the system.
This article mentions that I should disable Safe Sleep:
    http://www.macfixer.net/articles/184/
    Is this my ONLY option?
    thanks!
    Thierry

I can't believe it, I've been fighting this problems for WEEKS and just found the solution:
    http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20090518095106449
The problem lies in the fact that my current network location did not have an ETHERNET service setup as I was on airport solely, I had removed Ethernet service for that particular location.
So I followed the instructions: added an ethernet service and activated it in the gear tool menu. Voila. SO much frustrations and cold crashes... gone now! it seems.
    Hoping this helps someone!
