When does TM erase backups for removed USB/FW drives?

I have a MacBook Pro running 10.6.1 and I have a 2TB Western Digital My Book Studio (formatted HFS and attached with FW800) on which I store a lot of data (about 1.2 TB).
I have a couple of backup strategies including Time Machine (my Synology NAS acts as Time Machine server) and I would like to understand better what happens if I allow TM backups to occur WITHOUT my WD My Book FW800.
My concern is - would TM automatically 'remove' the backups of my FW drive if it's not connected when a backup occurs? This might occur once every four backups...

Whilst the KB does mainly deal with when TM should be used and when Backup should be used, I'm not sure what you mean by "that's not what it says"? The KB does clearly state (as I quoted in my post) that "Time Machine allow you to back up data to a network volume". Perhaps Apple needs to change the text of this KB and make it clear that the "network volume" they mean is only the Time Capsule or later AirDisk.
Perhaps you need to tell Apple that: http://www.apple.com/feedback/
TM will do network backups, but only to a Time Capsule; or a shared disk on another Mac running Leopard or Snow Leopard on the same local network; or a USB drive attached to a (recent) Airport Extreme.
Actually this is not correct as I have been successfully using both Synology and a ReadyNAS devices as TM volumes...all that is needed is a network volume that supports sparsebundle disk images (no firmware hacks on either the NAS or the Mac are needed).
Yes, sometimes it will. Excuse me for not prefacing that with the word "Officially."
There are a number of threads here and in the +Leopard / Time Machine+ forums where it works for a while, then something goes wrong, and there don't seem to be any solutions.
There's even a chance that your backups will be useless just when you need them the most.
I'm not worried about this because, as I mentioned in my original post, I have a couple of backup strategies
As long as you (and others who might read this) understand the risks.

  • When does java deallocate memory for objects;

um i'm working on a midp application that is very memory consuming. i would like to optimise it and make it just the oposite of what it is. now i would like to know when does java dellocate memory for an object, is it when it can find no more references to that object? or some other time, well i know its not when it can find no more references to that object because i've already tried that.
or to make things simpler is there any explicit way to make java deallocate memory for a specific object, like if i have a thread, which is executing a while loop, and i want java to end the thread and free its memory. is there any way to do this?

I happen to have quite some J2ME experience and it's not overly wise to count on extensive garbage collection. The garbage collector in limited device VMs isnt as advanced as it's big brothers. Try to avoid excessive object allocation and reuse instances whenever possible.
As for garbage collection, objects will be garbage collected if they can no longer be reached by any of the active application threads and if the garbage collectors deems it necessary to collect garbage, which will probably be when free heap memory becomes sparse or when there's some idle time in your application.

  • How do I backup to a USB flash drive?

How do I backup to a USB flash drive?

Do it with Windows, not with iTunes. Copy your whole iTunes folder from the hard drive to the USB flash drive. Or, if you have music not in the iTunes folder, then copy the whole My Music folder.
Before you start, make sure the flash drive has capacity. Most iTunes libraries are bigger than most flash drives. If you need more room, consider an external hard drive, which have much more capacity than a flash drive.

  • CPU is very hot when using Thunderbolt display and mac attached USB hard drive for TimeMachine

    Hello,
i've bought the new MacBook Pro 15" and a Thunderbolt display. Everything works fine for me due to the latest updates, but i experience an issue which i really don't understand. When i connect an usb hard drive for TimeMachine to my display it works like expected (CPU has a temperature of 64°C), but when i connect it to an usb port of the mac while using my display the CPU temperature goes crazy (spikes about 80°C) and it gets very noisy. Has anyone else experienced this behaviour?
May this has something to do with the dual graphics adapter and how the system handles the data stream to thunderbold ports and usb devices? Which graphics card is used for the external display, the internal gpu or the adapter from ati? I've googled a lot but haven't found appropriet answers about these questions.

    Hi there ulairi9!
I understand how this would be a frustrating issue! I have an article here that can provide some troubleshooting steps for you, and can hopefully help you resolve the issue. That article specifically addresses the issue you are experiencing, and can be found here:

  • Best practice power setting when doing a Site Survey for VOIP

    Hi Team,
Can someone please confirm or correct me.  When doing a Wireless Active Site Survey for Cisco VOIP, I should be setting the Test AP to local power of 14, which is 25mW?  Is this correct, or should it be another value?  I asked the customer for the power of their weakest client and they do not know, but they claim there's a high probably that they will go with Cisco VOIP clients.
    Thanks...

When you check the signal coverage, make sure the AP's radio transmit power does not use a transmit power greater than what the client devices can support. For example, by default, the Cisco Unified Wireless IP Phone 7925G uses the highest available transmit power by default (17 dBm / 50 mW for 2.4 GHz and 16 dBm / 40 mW for 5 GHz). It is possible to have a survey report that shows good coverage in all areas; however, if you have APs that operate at the highest transmit power, you might still experience uplink issues where the client devices do not support the same transmit power. For areas where there is deficient coverage, and you increase the AP transmit power to levels that the client devices cannot support, this only increases coverage on the downlink.

  • Removing Time Machine backups for (missing) external hard drive

My Time Machine was backing up everything, including external hard drives.
One of the external drives (ORIGDRIVE) started hardware failures.  I added a new external drive (NEWDRIVE) and used Finder to copy files over (some via RAID and some from the Time Machine copy a month before the problems cropped up).
Then I ejected and unplugged ORIGDRIVE and shipped it back to the manufacturer.
The problem is that the Time Machine still has all those copies from ORIGDRIVE eating up disk space, but I want to keep a year's worth of monthlies for all the other drives (just in case another drive fails soon).
Since ORIGDRIVE is not mounted, Time Machine doesn't show me those files so I can use the "Delete All Backups of" option within the GUI.
If I try renaming NEWDRIVE to ORIGDRIVE, what I get instead is ORIGDRIVE 1 .
We're talking dozens of TB here, so reformatting the Time Machine volume and starting over maxes out the system and leaves me flying without a complete backup for most of a week, something I'd rather avoid.
    Suggestions?

  • When is Apple will make a Micro USB Flash Drive for iPads and iPhones ???

IIt's really a big help if Apple make their own Micro USB a Flash Drive for iPads and iPhones.

Apple would not tell people there are other brands on the market. It is my opinion that if Apple users keep asking for the USB for ipads, they might consider it. As for the iphone there MIGHT be a tiny slot inside where the battery is for an SD card, which expands the space. I know Android has that feature in their cell phones, but not sure about Apple.

  • Which is the Start-Up disk when doing an 'Erase and Install'?

Basically I am doing the 'Erase and Install' process now and It says in the Support online that you need to erase the Start-Up disk on the left side. But I do not know which is the start-up disk? Is it the Macintosh HD option? or Disk 1 (that is a external hard-drive with all my back-up files on). Please Help!

The start up disk is the one with the OSX.  Usually it is the internal HDD, gray in color, and usually called Macintosh HD.

  • How to restore machine using a TM backup on a usb hard drive from older imac to a brand new iMac?

My imac (the one that had a superdrive in it), had a broken superdrive and was sent for repair. Whilst being "repaired" the screen was broken. I now have a brand new imac albeit without a dvd drive. My question is how to I restore my the old TM back up which had been made to an external usb hard drive to the new imac. Help files say that I should not restore from a TM file to a different machine and that I should use migration assistant. Whilst I can see the external usb drive in TM it is not being recognised in Migration assistant when I click on back up from a TM backup on another machine or disk.
    Any ideas?
Just noticed that this new machine is running OSX 10.8.4  the broken imac was on mavericks

This is very simple first run Software Update on the new machine and get your machine upgraded to the most recent version of Mountain Lion 10.8.5. Install all other software updates Apple recommends in Software Update. Then care fully read Pondini's guide on using Migration Assistant located at:
    http://pondini.org/OSX/MigrateLion.html
Your migrated data will be in a new account, to access it log into the new account.
Also DO NOT repeat DO NOTuse Wi-Fi to migrate data, if your TM backup drive uses USB, then connect it via USB and follow the on-screen instructions as described in Pondini's guide.

  • Rescue and Recovery 4.3 on Win7 doesn't see a backup on external USB hard drive - Model W510

I've run the Rescue and Recovery utility within Windows 7 on two different external USB hard drives thinking that maybe it was a usb drive issue.  When I open the R And R utility in expert mode I can see that both backups exist on their respective drives.  I planned on updating my hard drive so I made a full hd backup and the R&R startup disc to boot the laptop from.  The bios recognizes either external hard drive at boot with no problems.  It shows the names and "+" sign next to drives.  So I booted the drive at startup off the DVD drive with the R&R startup disc after I was sure that the bios recognized either external drives.  Then when I choose a "Full" restore is of course asks me if I want to use hd, cd/dvd, or external usb drive which I choose the later.  It then should show me the backup that I created earlier just as it did when I ran the utility from the Win7 environment so I can choose it to restore from.  But I get a blank box showing no backups when I run the 4.3 R&R Startup disc.  Again if I boot to Win7 and go into the R&R utility I can see the backup on the exact same USB external drive.  Then boot off the CD startup recovery disc and it shows NO BACKUP!  Help please!  I want to shelf my old hard drive "as is" and create the Restore onto the new hard drive but the utility isn't working for me.
    Thanks for any help.

    Hmmm,
Seems like that _should_ work.  Here's a way you might be able to finesse it:  go to the advanced R&R menu in Win 7 and create rescue media on your USB drive.  It's essentially the same process as creating the CD - it makes the USB drive bootable and puts a copy of R&R there.
There _should_ be an option to "preserve existing data" but be prepared to lose your existing backup and make it again.
Then just boot the external USB drive and see if R&R recognizes a backup image on the same drive from which you booted.
That's the way I usually migrate to new drives.  Maybe it will get around your mysterious problem.

  • Will time machine backup external 16gb USB pen drive?

I have a Macbook at home but PC at work. I carry all of my work on a 16gb sandisk pendrive which i work off on both computers. I want to back everything on my mac as well as the pendrive (which i make changes on daily) to an external hard drive or time capsule. My question is: will time capsule check for changes on the pen drive and back them up or does it only check for changes on macbook hard drive? Up till now i have to drag entire contents of pen drive every time i want to back it up which is time consuming!

TM will back up any directly attached drives but only provided they are formatted mac os extended. by what you describe your USB stick is formatted FAT in which case TM will not back it up. you can try using something like Chronosync to sync the drive when you need to. or you can reformat the drive mac os extended. however, windows can not read mac os extended format without extra software like Mac Drive which you'd have to get.
