When I download pdf files in Safari I get a black screen.  However, if I open a pdf in Mail it is viewable in Preview.  What is wrong?

    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste (command-V) into the text box that opens, then press return.
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
I've seen an unconfirmed report that the "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you might need to remove it as well, if applicable.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

  • When I open Firefox I get a black screen; how do I get rid of it?

When I first click on Firefox my monitor shows an all black window for a home page. A small rotating circle shows up on the black window; the indicator that a web site is loading. After a few seconds the circle goes away and for a flash the screen shows the url itself of my established home page, with a bit of an outline of that opening. Just as quickly, that disappears and the window goes black again. I can close it by right clicking on the Firefox logo and selecting "close all windows," and I can minimize it by using the windows key and the letter M. I feel that the correct screen is underneath the black window, but to which I have no access.
Before all this happened the search engine Ask had made itself the home page for Firefox without my consciously asking for that. By going to the control panel and the Internet entry, I removed what had become the url (of Ask's supplied home page) in the choice for home page, with my usual one (www.excite.com). That's when the above trouble started and remains.
Obviously, I am writing this contact to the Internet and a different machine. On the computer with the problem I couldn't see what I am doing. I could have also used Windows Explorer on the troubled machine; it has not been affected with the same problem.

I have also found that unchecking the "Use hardware acceleration when available" option solves this issue. This option is in the Advanced section, under the General tab.

  • I use Safari as my browser. When on a site and I click on a PDF file I get a black screen and a notice that "Adobe Reader blocked for this website". However, this does not happen if I use Firefox.

I use Safari as my browser. When on a site and I click on a PDF file I get a black screen and a notice that "Adobe Reader blocked for this website". However, this does not happen if I use Firefox.

Back up all data before making any changes. Please take each of the following steps until the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
If Adobe Reader or Acrobat is installed, and the problem is just that you can't print PDF's displayed in Safari, you may be able to print by moving the cursor to the the bottom edge of the page, somewhere near the middle. A black toolbar may appear under the cursor. Click the printer icon.
    Step 2
There should be a setting in its preferences of the Adobe application such as Display PDF in Browser. I don't use those applications myself, so I can't be more precise. Deselect that setting, if it's selected.
    Step 3
If you get a message such as ""Adobe Reader blocked for this website," then from the Safari menu bar, select
    Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
    and check the box marked
    Allow Plug-ins
    Then click
    Manage Website Settings...
and make any required changes to the security settings for the Adobe PDF plugin.
    Step 4
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
From the folder that opens, move to the Trash any items that have "Adobe" or “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari.
    Step 5
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it, if it's present. The same goes for a plugin called "iGetter," and perhaps others — I don't have a complete list. Don't remove Silverlight if you use the "Netflix" video-streaming service.
    Step 6
Do as in Step 3 with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari.

why do I get a black screen when i click on a PDF in a web page? Firefox works as is should.

    Hi,
From your Safari menu bar click Safari / Preferences then select the Extensions tab. If you have any installed, turn that off, then relaunch Safari. Try a PDF file.
If it's not Extensions, open a Finder window. Select MacintoshHD in the Sidebar on the left. Now open the Library folder then the Internet Plug-Ins folder. If you see any files such as this:
    AdobePDF Browser or Viewer Plug-in
Move it to the Trash, relaunch Safari.

  • Why do I get a black screen in front row when watching some iTunes store purchases? esp Cars 2

We bought Cars 2 a few months ago from the iTunes store. The movie won't work in Front Row, we only get a black screen (except for the blue Front Row controls at the bottom) although the audio comes through just fine. The annoying part is all of our other iTunes store movies work fine in Front Row. Just Cars 2 is broken. I don't think that it is an authorisation problem because it plays okay in iTunes, Quicktime, even via airplay to an appleTV or via Home Sharing to our iPad.
The movie is only standard definition so I am guessing that it is not an HDCP issue; I understand that there is only HDCP on HD movies. We are playing it on a Mac Mini (core 2 duo) on a Sony Bravia via a VGA connector.
After a little bit of complaining, apple let us download the movie again in case the file was corrupted, but unfortunately the same problem with the new version.
The computer did have Perian installed at one point, but uninstalling and restarting made no difference.
I have found lots of reports of movies with missing picture in Front Row but these are all ripped videos, never with an iTunes Store purchase.
Apple won't refund our money as the purchase was more than 60 days ago by the time I gave up troubleshooting and reported the problem.

Yeah! Problem solved: It's a QT issue.
Cause: Mac Update Software downloaded a faulty QT.
Solution: Download QT from Apple's QT site.
Great to have the Video back

  • Powerbook G4 1Ghz,OSX 10.5.8 - Kernel Panic when downloading in Safari

Revisiting this, as original discussion (August 2010) was archived.
Original problem was kernel panics particularly when downloading in Safari. Various people had similar issues, and crash logs appeared to indicate Airport Card/Driver as issue - one respondent suggested replacing Airport Card.
Having left this for a few months, and reverted to Tiger, I decided to give it one last try - purchased a second-hand A1027 Airport Extreme Card on Ebay, installed it (thanks iFfixit!), tested functionality (still in Tiger), then installed Leopard (new, fresh install from retail disk). Software Updated to 10.5.8 (via Ethernet for speed).
Have been up and running in 10.5.8 for 4 days now - and all running beautifully. iLife 09 installed fine (no iMovie 09 though - failed min-spec).
Have "thrashed" my 17" Powerbook constantly - this morning tried downloading combo update 10.5.8 - 759 MB - downloaded, verified and mounted fine.
Leopard runs superbly - not incredibly fast, but appears to be at least as quick as Tiger - one definite improvement is the Airport speed, and strength of signal.
Whilst I can't categorically state the the "new" Airport Card is the solution, it is the only thing changed in my configuration. Although the card itself appears identical to the one it replaced, I think this may have done the trick.
Will continue to monitor, and post if any issues arise.
17"  Powerbook now good for a few more years yet!

  • Cant play tv shows on ipad after downloading just get a black screen

My first generation ipad will not play tv shows that I have purchased from Itunes. Once they are downloaded on to the ipad I just get a black screen when I try to play them. If I restore the ipad I can SOMETIMES watch them for a short while before it reverts back to a black screen. So Frustrating!!

    Hello LBV123,
The next step would be to report the issue to the folks in the iTunes Store, as detailed in the article below.

  • Getting a black screen when publishing in Captivate 4.

I am getting a black screen when publishing in Captivate 4. I have noticed patches that care for this with later versions, but is there something available for version 4.

Thank you for your reply, I work for Citi and am personally unable to make decisions about updating our Flash player version. Is there a patch for this issue for Captivate 4?

Hi there, Thanks for reaching Adobe Community. Please accept my apologies for the same. Try updating your Flash Player to the latest version and then republish the project. This black screen issue was first discovered few months ago after the first Flash Player 10 release.  The link to download the latest version of flash is here: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/  Newer versions of Flash Player do not result in the same issue.  Thanks!Shekhar
