When exporting my aperture library it unexpectedly quits.

I have tried to export my aperture library and it keeps crashing on me. I have already exported 2 other libraries from the same computer and have had no issues however i am trying to export the 3rd library and it gets to 20% and crashes. I have already tried to repair the library but it continues to crash. Any suggestions? Thanks in advanced!

Is your external drive formatted correctly? MacOS X Extended? And is the drive mounted locally or is it a network volume? Aperture will have problems and may crash, if you are copying a library to a different filesystem.
But when i try to export my 3rd library (labeled "Maldvies 2012') it crashes after about 20% of it is exported.
You may have a corrupted item in your library (image file or video). Sometimes an item has an illegal filename, containing non printable characters or return characters. Or the media corrupted and Aperture cannot render thumbnails or preview. Try to export in smaller installments - select only half of the items you want to export. If this suuceeds, you will know that the problematic file is in the other half of the items. Keep subdividing, until you know which photo or movie is crashing Aperture, then delete it from the library.
Not sure where to find the crash logs??
The crashlogs are shown in the alert panel, when Aperture crashes, you should see something similar to this:

  • What is the best settings to use in the export manager when exporting from Aperture 3.5 to Photoshop cc.  tiff? psd? 16bit? dpi?

What are the best settings to use in the export manager when exporting from Aperture 3.5 to Photoshop cc for editing?
Should I use tiff or psd?
    8bit or 16bit?
    How many dpi?

That will depend on the photometric resolution of your originals. For jpegs it would be a waste of space to convert them to a higher resolution than 8bit, but if your images actually have already more than 8bit, you will want to preserve this quality. Then he 16bit format will help to prevent color clipping.
Both tiff and psd will preserve the lossless workflow. With Photoshop as external editor I would use he psd format for better support of layers and transparency, e.g., when you want to create watermark files.
The dpi will only matter, when you export the file for printing.

  • 'Unable to quarantine' when exporting from Aperture to a NAS

I have scanned a lot of images as TIFF (approx 28.000), and they are on an External Drive, and I imported them into Aperture (3.3) as referenced files.
Now I want to have a a more workable environment, because the TIFF's are 140 MB each.
    So the idea is:
    - Export from Aperture to a NAS drive
    - Create a new Aperture Library and import them (again as referenced files)
The NAS is a WD MyBook Live Duo that is attached to my Time Machine.
The current Aperture Library and the future Aperture Library will be on my iMac's HD.
I just exported 405 images and in the log I see 405 times:
    1/3/13 9:29:34.000 PM kernel[0]: Aperture[54224] Unable to quarantine `/Volumes//Pictures/Modellen_Ref_Files/Mulder_Koosje/JHWA_9601M-25.jpg': 22 (error suppressed)
    (Time and filename differ ofcourse.)
However all 405 images were indeed exported.
    I read the thread :
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/20274081#20274081
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/20294802#20294802
    from Steffen4712
So before continuing with the rest of the 28.000 images I want to make sure that I will not run into problems.
So can somebody explain to me or point me to a discussion so that I can try and understand what this Quarantine thing is trying to do?
    Thanks,
    Jan

I managed to find a way to get things done without getting the error.
    Workflow from the start:
    - scanned negatives and stored them as TIFF files on an external HD
    - Started Aperture and imported them as referenced files
    - added keywords and adjustments
    I tried:
    - export them as JPG to a NAS drive
This give the error "Unable to quarantine  22 (error suppressed)"
    I tried :
    - remove extra attribute from TIFF file on external HD (using xattr -c)
    - export them as JPG to a NAS drive
This give the error "Unable to quarantine  22 (error suppressed)"
    I tried:
    - export them as JPG to my HD
    - remove extra attribute from JPG (using xattr -c)
    - switch to "new" Aperture Library and import them and choosing the NAS as place to store them
This give the error "Unable to quarantine  22 (error suppressed)"
    I tried:
    - export them as JPG to my HD
    - remove extra attribute from JPG (using xattr -c)
    - using Finder and copy them to temporary folder on my NAS
    - open "new" Aperture Library and import them and choosing the NAS as place to store them (effectively relocating them)
No errors were seen in the system.log
Conlusion, apparently Aperture wants to quarantine them when moving them to the NAS and Finder does not.

  • Photo's are pixelated when chosen from Aperture library in System Prefs.

When I go to system preferences to choose my background image, all my Aperture Images are extremely pixelated when clicked on.
Example: If I have a 1440 x 900 image to perfectly fit my background it appears as a stretched out 640 x 480 extremely low res image.
But if I export the photo from Aperture than drag it into the background drop box in System Preferences/Desktop & Screen Saver the images looks like it should. It's just that this way takes way more time and is a hassle.
    Any idea? common problem?
    Aperture 2.1 on 10.5.3

You my friend are a genius! worked like a charm!
    Thanks
One more question not related the pixelation is that in System Preferences/Desktop & Screen Saver
Two 'Aperture Projects' come up with identical content in them of my Aperture Library. Both with the little triangle expander to the left of them. I can't understand why there are two of the exact same thing.

  • Can I export my Aperture library to iPhoto?

I "upgraded" to Aperture about a year ago, and I like all the editing features, etc. However, Aperture seems very cumbersome when I am trying to do simple things, like email photos via an email program open in Safari, or making a simple slideshow, etc. I was thinking that it might be better to use iPhoto as my main photo management tool, and use Aperture only when I want to do more advanced adjustments, etc. Thanks for any input!

Stick with Aperture is my advice.
    Thes things you mention:
simple things, like email photos via an email program open in Safari, or making a simple slideshow
are the same in iPhoto as in Aperture. If you can give specific examples we may be able to point you more concete information.
Reverting from Aperture is not easy. It means starting over from scratch.
iPhoto has no knowledge of, and knows nothing of how the Aperture Library works. It cannot read the Aperture library. So
    1. Export all your Masters
    2. Export all your Versions
You can write the metadata to the files on export - check out the Export presets. Note that you cannot export Faces. There is no convention for sharing Faces. The best you can do is use Faces as a basis for keywording.
Import them into iPhoto. Note that there is no way to associate the masters with the versions in iPhoto, so you'll have apparent duplicates.
Also, you can't use Aperture as an External editor because it isn't one. You would be importing to Aperture, processing and the exporting again, and then importing to iPhoto, a needlessly complex workflow.
Aperture does everything that iPhoto and a whole lot more.

  • ICal opens although when I click week view iCal unexpectedly quits

    Dear colleague:
    May I have your help?
I will appreciate if somebody help me on this issue described bellow.
    Details of the crash:
    iCal opens smoothly.
I go to the month view and all appointments appears right correctly.
Right after clicking week view (button in the toolbar), iCal opens the week view yet seconds after it unexpectedly quits sending automatically reports to Apple.
Hoping to have any help very soon
    Thx

    IcemanKo70,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
First, refresh the the com.apple.iCal.plist file. You will find the com.apple.iCal.plist file in your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder. Quit iCal, drag the com.apple.iCal.plist file to your Desktop, log out/in or restart.
Then before restarting iCal, open System Preferences...>Language & Text>Formats>Region: and set/reset the appropriate region.

  • Which Metadata option when exporting from Aperture?....

When Exporting a single Original (never edited) CR2 file from Aperture 3.6 to my Desktop there are 3 Metadata options :
    1) - Don't include IPTC
    2) - Include IPTC
    3) - Create IPTC4XMP Sidecar File
As I have no idea what 'IPTC' etc is, which option is best to later Import into Capture One, please?

IPTC are all Metadata you assigned in Aperture or in other applications, as opposed to the EXIF metadata embedded in the photos by the camera. The camera tags would be in the EXIF.
The get an idea, what is in clouded in EXIF and IPTC, open the Inspector in Aperture in the sidebar and switch the view to "IPTC info". That will show you a list of all tags, that will be included, when you export from Aperture with IPTC included.
You can only export modified versions with IPTC, since Aperture will not modify the original file on export. That is why you can add a sidecar files, that lists all tags, and many applications are able to read this sidecar file, when you import photos.
I want the camera EXIF data to be exported with the image file.
The camera EXIF are already embedded in the original image files. When you export the originals, the EXIF will be included, independent of your setting for IPTC.
You can test, what will be exported, by opening exported files in Preview and opening the Inspector (Tools menu > Show Inspector)
You can see all EXIF and IPTC tags that have been exported with the photo.

  • Tried to rebuild iphoto library twice - "unexpectedly quits"

    Hi there
Iphoto froze up and so I did a restart only find that all my photos had gone from the library and all albums. I followed the advice on this forum and tried twice to rebuild the library. Both times all went well for the first part and then iphoto "unexpectedly quit" - each time.
I don't think I've ever tampered with hard drive photo folders. The only other info I have is that iphoto had been very slow before it froze.
    Help! Please!!
    Thanks very much.

Sorry I guess I wasn't clear in my last email.
I held down the option+shift keys while starting iPhoto and the message that came up was that my library couldn't be found and did I want to find it or create a new one. I clicked on find and the photo library in pictures appeared. I highlighted that and clicked on open but it wouldn't open. Should I have clicked on "create new library" instead? Or am I dealing with the wrong library file. Although this is the biggest of the two files, the other ones( that are now on the desktop) seem to have some different stuff to this one.
By the way I can see the individual thumbnails in the pictures folder if I click on the sub folders, so the pictures are there somewhere.
Sorry for the long and endless emails and thanks for your advice!

  • Is there an option to add a watermark to a image when exporting with aperture 3 to flickr or facebook?

Jea the headline is pretty much my question ;-)
cheers Jan and thx for help already

The short answer is no- for facebook anyway.
Even if this this feature is added, I will continue to export my images to a drive first because Facebook now allows users to download full rez images, and of course they archive them too so the highest rez I upload to Facebook is 1024x1024.  Remember the  Facebook TOS says they can use uploaded images any way they wish.
I have a separate A3 library called "Facebook" that I import these previously exported images into so these lo-rez, watermarked images don't show up in my main library.

  • Aperture 2.1 unexpectedly closing upon launch

I have MacPro and just installed Aperture2. Aperture 2 is in my applications folder and I just imported iPhoto library (15k photos). I previously had Aperture 1 but now when I launch Aperture 2 is unexpectedly quits. I checked and made sure I had most recent updates (2.1) but still no luck. Any ideas?

What happens if I simply try to re-install Aperture 2. Will it keep my library from Aperture 1 and simply uninstall and reinstall Aperture 2.1?
Aperture 1 worked fine- all I did was install Aperture 2 (which installed fine) then I clicked on import iPhoto library?
    I don't get it?
If I remove Aperture 2 will my library still be there so all I need to do is then reinstall Aperture. I do not want to play around with library preferences- beyond my scope probably.
    Many thanks,
    Ed

  • FCPX and Aperture Library Issues

Does anyone else have issues with FCPX being unbearably slow when loading an Aperture library when accessing the Photos window on the lower right? I have all the most current versions of both Aperture and FCPX. I have a Macbook Pro Retina with i7 2.6gig processor. 16 gigs of RAM. My Aperture library is very large, about 300,000+ images. The Aperture is located on an external Thunderbolt drive. It can take as much as an hour for the still images to show up in the photo window. Any suggestions our there for speeding this process up. It's one of the main reasons I use Aperture, the supposed terrific integration between all Apple programs. I this speed it's much faster to just export the images and forget about going through FCPX. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

If you don't need all 300,000+ images in FCP, I would export what you need and import it into the event library.

  • Opening Aperture Library from my Drobo (Very Slow)

I have a Firewire Drobo, which I love, and I use Aperture on my Mac. I currently have my primary Aperture Library (~125GB) on my Drobo. I have been experiencing an issue with slowness when opening my Aperture library from my Drobo. It takes several minutes (5-6) to open my library from the Drobo and am wondering if 1) others are experiencing excessive slowness when opening their Aperture Library from a Drobo and/or 2) if I would be better off just using a regular firewire drive for my Aperture library and using the Drobo just for my Aperture Vault and not my primary library?
It seems that this issue has gradually gotten worse as my library has increased in size. When the library was 50GB it seemed to open pretty quickly, but the bigger it gets the longer it takes to open. Once it is open it is fairly snappy, although if I am reading and writing a lot of data to the Drobo simultaneously I will see some slowness sometimes. This machine is the current generation of 24" iMac with 4GB of RAM. My Drobo is filled with 3 - 1TB Western Digital Green drives and 1 500GB WD Green drive.
Would love to hear if others are having a similar experience and any ideas for better performance.
    Thanks!
    Guy

I don't think the FW is the problem, although it might be
I was keeping my Aperture library on a Drobo and ALL of the images were referenced and not managed.
And like you, it became progressively slower (5-10-15-20 minutes to open) and then became corrupted on more than one occasion. After the last episode and after substantial heroic efforts (48 hours of rebuilding), I was able to recover the library. Once recovered, I moved the library to my internal drive and left all of my images as referenced on the Drobo. The library since the move has been fine. I have occasional images which appear to become corrupted on the Drobo (not recognizable by Aperture or Photoshop or Preview), that fortunately, I simply replace the RAW file in the appropriate location from a back up copy of the RAW file and everything is fine.
This has been discussed with Data Robotics and after several weeks I still don't have an answer from an email I sent providing all the requested information.
Bottom Line. Place your referenced your images on Drobo, but make sure you have at least two other additional backup of your original datafiles. Move your library to some other drive immediately!!
My suspicion is Aperture and Drobo RAID system do not work well together and Data Robotics has been disappointing in terms of technical response to inquiries.
I have two Drobo boxes and they are used daily, but at this point I always, always always have at least two back ups on whatever is on the Drobo. My dream was it would be a highly or super reliable copy of my data, but at this point, I really do not consider them to be even a reliable copy, given the random corruption issues and Data Robotics poor support.
I am investigating alternative large data systems and the most interesting thus far is the WD Share gigabit system. Data Robotics says that they only certify one other FW drive and it HAS to be a Data Robotic drive and not another vendors. FW is supposed to support up to 16 devices according to Apple so there is a huge disconnect. I do use several drives downstream from my 2nd Gen Drobo units, I mount/unmount religiously and have not had obvious problems with other drives.
Having said that, I have not had another corruption problem since December 26 or so, but I also have not looked at every RAW file of the 40,000 stored on the Drobo. I figure I will find more, but will replace them as I find them.

  • Ipad:Safari unexpectedly quit

    I have an iPad,iOS5.1.1
When I open safari, it always unexpectedly quit,
I ask apple store in Taiwan ,they told me it can't fix...because my iPad can't upgrade to  iOS6 ...Q_Q
The only way is reset...when safari unexpectedly quit,  I have to reset my ipad again again again
Someone can help me or tell me what can I do?
I don't have iPhone or Mac or PC, just iPad
I really hope this problem can fix!!
Thank you for read...my English is not good, I hope you can understand.

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

  • Aperture Library to Adobe Lightroom?

    Hello,
Does anyone know of a way, or have any ideas, of how to share my Aperture library with Adobe Lightroom? I like both programs for different reasons and was curious if there was a way to at the very least export my Aperture Library in a way that I can import it in Lightroom? I eventually want to move both of these to an external hard drive as well..
    Thanks!

Well, I just tried this... with one file. What I discovered, makes sense. The original file is not 'syched' because the original is not modified with non-destructive editing. All of the "edits" to the original files seem to reside within the programs, and not with the files. I wouldn't know where to look for this edit data in Lightroom, but I'm pretty sure that in Aperture the edit instructions being stored in the Aperture Library, even if the file is refrenced. This would be an interesting piece of code for someone to work on..... i.e. make a change in Aperture, and Lightroom reads that change from the Aperture library, and vice a versa.
Not sure that anyone would really want to do this on a long term basis as I sincerely doubt that there is something that on program can do that the other can't. (Except that Lightroom does not make books or have a Lighttable). If for instance you created a bunch of great edits in Lightroom and wanted to used those edits in an Aperture book, you would, at this time, have to export the edited versions and import them into Aperture - at least that seems to me to be the current requirements.

  • Photoshop Elements 6 "Unexpectedly quits"

    Hi all,
I am currently working out of a MacBook pro, running 10.5.6, and I recently installed Photoshop Elements Six.
The installation went fine, but when I boot the application, it "unexpectedly quits" when I try to start a new document, be it "from scratch" or on an existing photo.
If I don't load anything, but just click on the tools or settings, it doesn't crash immediately, but after a few seconds the program freezes.
I have no idea what's wrong with it, as the program worked fine on my desktop machine, which incidentally has lower specs than my MacBook.
I've tried installing and re-installing, I've reset PRAM, deleted the elements settings, and am about to repair disk permissions.
I'm at my wit's end with this problem.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    ~Zac

    Hi everyone,
This is my first try at this so I hope i will be alerted to any replies I may get.
I feel like I walked into a trap. I installed PS Elements 2.0 on my Macbook Pro and of course it will not open. There is at this point absolutely no information anywhere as to how I can properly uninstall it. I do see that it is an issue with other folks though and find it a little hard to believe that adobe has not posted the solution on their own site.
Well enough crying, does anyone hold he magic key to this question? how to properly uninstall Elements 2.0?
I see allot of uninstall software out there but I am very leery about that option.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
