When firefox freezes cant shutdown firefox using task manager

Sometimes when im surfing on internet firefox just stop to working properly and dont open any website or domain or anything, just can access to internet, but is not a ISP failure because i can keep chatting, skype, irc, and also navigating using internet explorer or opera, the point is just firefox stop all kind of activities with internet looks like if im not connected. To solve this i close the firefox and try to open again. When this happen i get a message saying firefox.exe is already running, then i just open task manager and try to close but doesnt matter how hard or how many times i click to close, the firefox.exe process just cannot be closed and my only solution for this is restarting the pc. There are any way beyond task manager to force the shutdown of firefox.exe? Or maybe any alternate program to force a shutdown of firefox.exe??

Did you check for plugin-container processes as well?

  • Firefox won't close without using Task Manager - end process; can't start in safe mode or disable add-ons

I've been having a memory leak/hanging problem for weeks -- FF slowly increases memory usage until it's at almost 100% and then freezes and I have to shut it down via Task Manager/end process.
Last week I updated to FF 12, and I also added the Web Developer 1.1.9 add-on. Now every time I open Firefox it tries to go to the "Web Developer installed" page, but the page never loads. Nothing else will load either.
I can't start in Safe Mode because of the problem with having to close it in Task Manager. I select "restart with add-ons disabled" and it just never opens. The Add-On manager page won't load, so I can't disable Web Developer to see if that's the problem.
I've uninstalled Firefox and reinstalled, and it still goes right back to the Web Developer page when I open the freshly installed copy.
    Help, please!

Have you already tried clearing the browser cache, opening a blank tab, and trying to open some other website ?

Instead of trying to open safe mode from within the User Interface menu have you tried alternative methods such as holding the shift key when you start Firefox. (After checking for running Firefox processes or plugincontainer and killing them if found )

  • When I exit Firefox, the firefox.exe process continues to run. I cannot re-launch Firefox unless I first stop the firefox.exe process using Task Manager. How do I fix this problem?

I am running WinXP Pro, SP3. I uninstalled and re-installed Firefox and the problem didn't go away. This problem started about 2 months ago. Firefox always worked fine before that. This happens very frequently -- If I have been using Firefox previously, and I closed the program, when I try to re-launch it, about 50% of the time, I need to use Task Manager to stop a persistently running firefox.exe process.

See the "hangs at exit" section of the [[Firefox hangs]] article.

  • Firefox does not close/exit and must be shut down using task manager

When I "x" out of Firefox, or File menu "exit" or right click to "close," the Firefox window closes but whenever I attempt to restart Firefox, it says that it is already running (hence was never shut down) and I have to use Task Manager to "end process" before re-starting Firefox again. This dilemma only started after upgrading about 6 months ago (can't remember the version). I recently upgraded again but the problem still exists.

Did not address my issue. Firefox isn't freezing while it's up and running, it just doesn't completely shut down... therefore it's always running behind the scenes.

  • Removed working Firefox 7, Installed Firefox 10.0, Firefox will not load. When I click on icon, firefox.exe process shows briefly in task manager, then goes away....no errors, nothing

Removed working Firefox 7, Installed Firefox 10.0, Firefox will not load. When I click on icon, firefox.exe process shows briefly in task manager, then goes away....no errors, nothing. Never see browser panel at all. Also tried to install Firefox 9.0, but the same result was observed.

Rather difficult to say what the problem may be at present but for general info please have a look at
    * [[safe mode]]
    *[[firefox will not start]]
    *[[firefox hangs]]
Note sometimes you may have to wait a while for firefox to shutdown completly, and if it has hung then as explained in the above articles you may need to kill any firefox.exe process that is still running (and maybe plugincontainer.exe)
Try starting firefox in [[safe mode]] e.g. by holding down shift key
    * do not make any changes in the first window, just click on continue<br/> ? Do you get as far as seeing the options window for safe mode ?
If firefox is crashing see [[firefox crashes]], this is easier to work through if you can get firefox to start without crashing on startup. Currently some firefox users are finding Firefox 10 crashes on startup, and a new version Firefox 10.0.1 is being released very soon to deal with this and another cause of hangs.
Not saying any of this applies to your case but recent issues include

  • Trying to upgrade to V.8, cannot open Firefox. Have uninstalled, loaded 8 again then 7 , 9 and finally 6. The program will not run. Operating Windows 7. When I try to uninstall, I am asked to 'close Firefox' but it isn't open ( Task Manager confirms).

Firefox 8 won't open. The Windows 'wheel' which indicates a program is opening spins for about 5 seconds and then stops and nothing happens. I have spent several hours uninstalling and then loading different versions but still the same thing happens. I frequently switch off and restart the computer but nothing happens. I have changed the Windows firewall to allow Firefox, again nothing happens.

In the task manager, are you looking at Processes? That is where you find Firefox listed when you see no interface, not in Applications.
This page might have some useful information about that problem.

  • Why won't Firefox close, even using Task Manager, unless I right click on the process and select 'end process' ?

Firefox works fine, but won't respond when I try to shut it down. Using Task Manager to 'End Task' doesn't work. In Task Manager I have to right click on firefox in the Processes menu and click 'End Task'. Apart from logging off/shutting down, this is the only method that works. Also refused to respond when I tried to reset and doesn't respond to commands to change profile settings.

    SOLUTION (possible).
Hi all. I had this problem as well. I currently run FF26. A week or so ago, out of nowhere FF wouldn't exit - the window would close but firefox.exe process would keep running in the background using about 50% of CPU. Not sure if it's connected, but just prior to that I clicked on a link on Facebook that looked like spam website, nothing happened, site loaded (sort of, all I saw was a msg - Please Wait...) but nothing happened, I have Eset antivirus and it monitors network traffic and files for viruses, so maybe it prevented my PC getting infected...
So, I had this problem for a few days, was searching the net for solutions, but nothing seem to help. Then, just out of luck I did something that WORKED!
Here's what I did. I noticed that svchost.exe was using a lot of CPU alongside with FF. I ran ProcessExplorer to see what might be connected to this process, the list was long and I didn't have any idea where to start, so what I did was - Right click on svchost process, choose Debug and dismiss the warning. In a few seconds svchost process quit and after that FF started closing properly.
I had to re-enable all my plugins and themes I disabled prior, I also lost my history and preferences which I trashed in the process of searching for solution. But heck, it worked, hopefully for good. Now if someone could point out the real cause of this and fix it for everyone - that would be great. Cheers!

  • Why do i have to use task manager to end firefox even after i close the website

every time i go to close firefox, i use either the X or file exit.
then i go to the icon to launch the program (firefox) i get a pop up that tells me firefox is still running to maybe restart my computer.
the only way i can override this is by using "task manager" look for the icon and end the process.
then i can reopen the browser

Use "Firefox > Exit" (Windows: Firefox/File > Exit; Mac: Firefox > Quit Firefox; Linux: Firefox/File > Quit) to close Firefox if you are currently doing that by clicking the close X on the Firefox title bar.
In case you are using "Clear history when Firefox closes", try to exclude the clearing the Cookies

If I create a new profile and start from that window, Firefox starts up. I see no error windows/messages. I do have it listed in my Firewall as an exception program with Permit All. • Fire fox not responding, locks computer, have to use task manager to reset

Firefox continually stops responding when I click on a bookmark. I get the info at the top of my screen that Firefox is not responding. Now if I go to MS office and am working in Word with Firefox in the background, word freezes. I go to Task Manager, it says Firefox not responding. End task and office works. Even without office running, I still get the not responding problem. I use Windows 8.1 on a Dell desktop. This problem has been happening since Friday the 21st.

Problems with bookmarks and history not working properly can be caused by a corrupted places.sqlite database file.
You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox profile folder.

  • Why do I have to use task manager to close FF after I exit FF?

I use Firefox close it like normal. If I start it again it will not open and I get and error message "firefox working with other program, try closing firefox".
I then open the task manager, end process, Firefox*32.~.
I thought maybe it could have been a plug so I disabled all plug-ins. Restated FF it went to google/FF home page. I closed firefox at the X. Opened the task manager and it was still running in the end process tab.

Use "Firefox > Exit" (Windows: Firefox/File > Exit; Mac: Firefox > Quit Firefox; Linux: Firefox/File > Quit) to close Firefox if you are currently doing that by clicking the close X on the Firefox title bar.

  • All open windows lock up, cannot minimize/close, must use task manager to close everything

I've been using Mozilla Firefox for a few years and love it. My home page is Google News, and Google is my chosen search engine. For the last three weeks, whenever I have Firefox/Google news open, then open another program, like Word, Quicken, maybe a downloaded game site, everything locks up - every single page including my Mozilla Firefox, my gmail account and whatever other page I have tried to open. I cannot minimize any screen, cannot X close any screen, this includes the original open Firefox Mozilla screens. The only way to be able to do anything on any screen is to use Task Manager to close the windows. My AVG protection runs scans every night. I have gone in and run my Malware protection program, another AVG scan, updated everything, flash players, run checks everywhere. Even ran a computer degrag, yet still the problem persists.
What now? I am frustrated having to completely shut down all programs running with task manager before I can proceed with any program.

I found that logging into Google Docs would lock it up EVERY TIME. So I disabled every one of the Add-Ons one at a time, and found the offending Add-On: Shockwave Flash 11.3.300.268. Disable that one and see if it solves your problem, it did mine.
EDIT: Disabling this means you can't watch YouTube videos. The best fix is to do a search for Adobe's earlier versions of Flash. Uninstall Flash Player from your computer and reinstall an earlier version. I am successfully using 11.3.300.265.
