"When Firefox starts:" is set to "Show my homepage", but it still shows the last page visited anyway.

Firefox 20, Ubuntu 12.04, Cinnamon desktop. "When Firefox starts" is set to "Show my homepage". I tried settting browser.sessionstore.max_resumed_crashes to zero. Still does it. I think it happens mosts often if I log out without closing Firefox first. Does not seem to matter what that last page was. This problem has existed for as long as I have been using Firefox. It seemed to go away at about version 17, but now it is back in version 20 (at least for me).
Possibly, uninstalling all my add-ons or closing all tabs and shutting down in proper sequence would fix it. Come to think of it, going to my homepage and closing all other tabs before I log off would fix it for sure. But, it would be nice if it just worked.
Thanks

If the problem is that your settings are getting reset or failing to save correctly, you could check out this article: [[How to fix preferences that won't save]].
Have you tested with your extensions disabled for a few shutdown or system restart cycles to see whether that makes any difference?
Less likely:
Could you make sure this preference is set to false: [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser.sessionstore.resume_session_once browser.sessionstore.resume_session_once]. Usually is.
If you start Firefox with a shortcut, could you make sure there are no command-line options set that could override your default settings?

I just downloaded Lion.  Now when I open Safari, it automatically opens to the last page visited.  How do I reset it to open to a blank page as it did previously?

Dealing With The Resume Feature of Lion
Managing Mac OS X Lion's application resume feature.
If you shutdown your computer you should get a dialog asking if you want applications to resume on the next startup. Simply uncheck the box to prevent that from occurring. Open General preferences and uncheck the option to Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps. You can also install a third-party utility to control resume features on individual applications: RestoreMeNot or Application State Cleaner.
It is possible to completely stop the Resume feature although I'm unconvinced that it is that annoying. Nevertheless see the following:
If you have not yet done so you must first make your /Home/Library/ folder visible. Open the Terminal application in the Utilities folder. At the prompt paste the following command line:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library
Press RETURN. Quit the Terminal application.
In the Finder navigate to the /Home/Library/Saved Application State/ folder. Delete the contents of the folder. Back up to the /Home/Library/ folder. Select the Saved Application State folder. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the Sharing and Permissions panel at the bottom click on the lock icon and authenticate. Set each of the listed entries to Read Only. Close the Get Info window.
Quit all open programs except the Finder (this is very important.) Next, navigate to the /Home/Library/Preferences/ByHost/ folder. Look for a .plist file with "com.apple.loginwindow." in the file name followed by some numbers in hexadecimal. Select the file. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window and in the Sharing and Permissions panel click on the lock icon and authenticate. Set each of the listed entries to Read Only. Close the Get Info window. If you also find a file with the same filename but with a last extension of ".lockfile," then you should delete it.
The above should eliminate the Resume feature system-wide. Note that any future system updates or upgrades will likely undo these changes. You will then need to repeat this procedure assuming there are no major changes in OS X related to it.

  • I just want my tabs to load for the web link they were originally set for. Instead I am getting the last page visited or the tab has been logged out.

''locking as a duplicate of https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/981122''
I have "Show My Home Page" for the Startup option
I have LastPass set to AutoLogin
I have the cookies for the tab sites in the Cookies Exceptions list
Despite all of this, the tabs are "logged out" when I restart Firefox, and sites that have no logins are not opened based on the web address the tab was originally set for.

Type '''about:config''' in the URL and filter
*'''browser.stratup.homepage''' and change the value as the website you need to load.
    or
Firefox Menu > Tools > options
*General > Startup > When firefox starts " Show my Home Page"
    **Home Page "www.google.com"
Firefox Menu > Tools > options > Privacy > History
*Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history":
*Select: [x] Accept Cookies from sites
**Accept third party cookies: "From Visited"
    *Keep until "They Expire"
*Deselect: [ ] "Clear history when Firefox closes"

  • Sometimes the url's don't update so when you press the "back button" it sends you to the home page instead of the last page visited

A friend of mine has this webblog and I have never had problems viewing it before I downloaded the new version of firefox. However, once I downloaded the new version, I noticed that every time I press the "back button" after viewing a picture, it sends me back to the blog home page instead of the last page I was on or that I viewed. This also happens with some of the standard websites I visit not just the blogs.

Right click the Back button and select the page you want to go back to.

  • I have firefox 5 on windows 7 ultimate, evry time i close the browser , when it is opened again i get the last page i was browsing, but Options, general, when firefox starts is set to show my homepage, whats wrong?

homepage is set to www.google.co.uk, this works when i click the home page icon, but not when i open the browser, its always the last site i visited , which i dont want

Perhaps your install of Firefox is hanging on exit, triggering the session restore.
You can disable session restore by changing a hidden preference.
Type about:config into the location bar and press enter
Accept the warning message that appears, you will be taken to a list of preferences
In the filter box type resume to bring up a small number of preferences
Double-click on the preference browser.sessionstore.resume_from_crash to change its value to false

  • Regardless of changes I make, when Firefox starts, it sets my homepage to Gcal. How can I fix this?

I keep resetting my home page, but every time Firefox starts up, it changes it to Google Calendar, which I had as homepage once, but no more. There has to be a fix for this, right? I hope someone knows what it is. Thank you.

If there are problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the disk image (dmg) file to the desktop
    *Firefox 8.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
*Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
*Install the new version that you have downloaded
Your profile data is stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder, so you won't lose your bookmarks and other personal data if you uninstall and (re)install Firefox.

  • My Firefox 20 seems to not shut down but only restart. Also, rather than my home page, the last pages visited appear.

It's as if Firefox 20.0 never shuts down but only restarts.
Even when I close Firefox 20.0 by clicking the X button on the top right or use "exit," when I open Firefox, it acts the same as if I'd used "restart," namely the tabs don't load until I click on them. Furthermore, the 4 pages I use as my home pages aren't there but rather whatever pages I had up when I last closed my browser.
I have tried creating a new profile, which worked ONE TIME. Then, it went back to my problem.
I have used "restore" to go back to a time before the problem started but that hasn't worked.
I removed the addon I had downloaded in that time period but that didn't help, either.
Thank you for any help you can give. I know you're all volunteers and your time is important.

Does it seem like that Firefox is crashing? Try checking if there are any crash reports by going to about:crashes in your browser. Alternatively you can try safe mode as outlined below:
'''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
    * You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article for that.
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''
''When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.''

  • I want tabs to open at google.ca as they did before I got rid of the bing bar. Have gone to options and set it there but I still get the thumbnail page. Thx.

Instead I get the thumbnail page which Id rather not have. I x'ed out all the thumbnails so only the google.ca one is there but it's not a full page, just a thumbnail. I realize I can enlarge it. This is not a huge problem but I would like it solved.

Just to lay out the recipe all in one place:
    (1) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
    (2) In the search box above the list, type or paste '''newtab''' and pause while the list is filtered
    (3) Double-click the '''browser.newtab.url''' preference and enter your preferred page:
    * ''Page thumbnails (default)'' => about:newtab
    * ''Blank tab'' => about:blank
    * ''Built-in Firefox home page'' => about:home
    * ''Any other page'' => full URL to the page
Press Ctrl+t to open a new tab and verify that it worked. Fixed?
Note: as per cor-el's suggestion, open the Google page you want and copy the "final" URL from the address bar to paste in when you update this setting. If you use a shortened version, then Google will send Firefox a redirect every time, which is a waste.

  • When I open my shortcut for Mozilla Firefox, instead of my start page (Google) it opens the last page visited...kinda annoying, and I can't fix it in the OPTIONS section.. any help?

well, above says it all, I think...

  • In Firefox 4, it keeps wanting to open two pages when I open the browser, the home page AND the last page visited in a separate tab. How can I get it to stop doing this?

At 1st I thought this was because I'd forgotten to properly close my last session, but then I realized that it happens every time.

  • HT201322 I have deleted tv shows I purchased but they still show up on my iphone.  They are not in the cloud or in Itunes under purchased.

I deleted some old music videos and 6 tv shows from ITunes.  I had purchased them.  Yet they still appear on my Iphone (yes they do have a cloud in the bottom right corner), but they don't show up in my purchases when  sign in and check in the cloud, nor do they show up in Itunes.  It is as if they are hung up in the cloud, and I cant delete them.  There is no trace of them anywhere in the ITunes Library or Cloud.  I see them in my Recycle bin on the desktop.  Any suggestions?  Been to Apple 3xs this week.  They keep giving me the mini tutorial on hiding purchases and deleting unwanted items from itunes, but nothing is there, it is merely not going away...meaning still on my phone, even when wiped clean and itunes downloaded again. Anyone?  Thank you.

If they are showing in the Videos app with a cloud then go into Settings > iTunes & App Store on your phone and set Videos (under the 'Show All') heading 'off' - you might (depending upon which country that you arein) have a similar button for music and the Music app.

  • Having recently installed Firefox, it is not retaining any of my browsing history, including the last page visited (no back button!).

My Privacy and Security settings are set to retain cookies but for some reason this information is not being stored at all. I cannot save bookmarks or even go back on my browser. Help!

This can be a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

  • Firefox 4 doesn't open in a homepage, but rather opens the last page I visited, which I HATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So far the Firefox upgrades are nothing but trouble to me and my computer. Where is the homepage. Why when I open Firefox from the desktop shortcut do I not get a homepage, but rather the last page I visited. I was doing bills, and finished but couldn't find the log off button, so closed the page, and then closed firefox. When I re-opened, it opened right to the page where I was still signed into my account!!!!!!! A security failure if I ever saw one. There is not one thing I have found to be helpful since Firefox first updated me to 3.6.14, then quit responding completely! So I tried the 4 Beta, and it is so far a disaster.

If the Cookies window is open and no browser or other Firefox windows are open, opening a new browser window will now still open the last page visited instead of a blank page, even if "Show a blank page" is selected for "When Firefox starts:", and even if the last browser window opened was blank; I tested this by opening a webpage and then opening a blank browser window, closing the browser window with the webpage, then closing the blank browser window, then opening a new browser window while the Cookies window remained open. It is a time waster to have to continually close and reopen the Cookies window and a potential privacy disaster to have your website reopened after you closed your browser. Please, please, fix this.
