When Firefox starts it opens 22 new windows.

All of a sudden when I first start Firefox it opens literally 22 new blank windows. It used to be that one of them was my last browsing session but now they're all blank without even a home page or my pinned app tabs. I have no idea why that started, I don't think I changed anything.

It is possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
Delete the files sessionstore.js [2] and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
* Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder
* http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
If you see files sessionstore-##.js with a number in the left part of the name like sessionstore-1.js then delete those as well.<br />
Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).

  • When I try to open a new window in Firefox, I get an error message

When I try to open a new window in Firefox, I get the following error message:
    "Not Found
The requested URL /en-US/firefox was not found on this server."
...but other websites, such as Google or CNN.com, work just fine.
I'm running Firefox 3.6.28 on my MacBook Pro, with OS 10.4.11. I can't update to the latest version of Firefox unless I update my OS, which would be costly and also involve increasing my RAM.
But the Firefox homepage worked fine until this morning. Is this likely to be a temporary glitch? If not, how can I fix it?
    Thanks,
    Emmy

At least at the moment, the default Firefox homepage is back! So maybe this was a momentary glitch. But see below.
BTW, here's the URL for the page:
    http://start.mozilla.org/en-US/?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official
'''But, '''the "Mozilla Firefox Start Page" currently lacks a menu bar at the top with various Google options such as "Gmail," "more," etc. I found these very useful.
I'm wondering -- did Google tell Mozilla to stop including those links on its start page? Maybe Google wants us all to switch to having Google as our default homepage. Or is the lack of a menu bar just another temporary glitch?

You can try to reset Firefox with a new profile if you are currently using a Firefox 13.0.x version.
Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.<br />
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.<br />

  • Firefox lately always opens a new window

Whenever I click a link in firefox, whether I option-click it or right-click it and choose "Open in new Tab." Firefox lately always opens a new window, not a tab. For the life of me, I cannot get it to open a page in a new tab.
There was a time when I had one window open, and every time I would choose to create a new tab, it would create it in that window instead of the window I was currently in, but I have since closed that window, and now I cannot get a link to open in a new tab no matter what I do.
I have tried both selecting and deselecting "Open new windows in a new tab instead" In Firefox preferences, restarting Firefox in "Safe" mode, etc. to no avail.
    How do I fix this?

There are other settings in about:config that might be causing that effect.
    <pre>browser.link.open_newwindow
3 = divert new window to a new tab (default) (checked*)
2 = allow link to open a new window (unchecked*)
1 = force new window into same tab
    * First checkbox in Options > Tabs (on Mac, Preferences > Tabs)
    browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction
0 = open_newwindow preference honored for all new windows
2 = open_newwindow preference honored for all new windows except script windows with features (default)
1 = open_newwindow preference ignored completely (same effect as open_newwindow=2)
    browser.link.open_newwindow.override.external
-1 = open_newwindow applies to external links (default)
3 = open external links in a new tab
2 = open external links in a new window
1 = open external links in active tab </pre>

  • Firefox will not open a new window for a website when it is supposed to and then will not close properly. I have un-installed and re-installed and problem persists, why? How is it solved?

When I go on to some websites and click on certain things it wants to open a new window to display the information etc.
I.E. On an agency job search site I click to do a detailed job search which should open in a new window, but this will not happen now on my Firefox.
Firefox was working perfectly ok on Saturday 11th September but for some unknown reason has acted up since Sunday.
There have been no Windows updates which could effect this and the laptop is otherwise working perfectly ok.
Nothing has changed from Saturday Night to Sunday Night that I can see.
I have even tried to do a system restore to solve the problem but with no success.

I also have this problem. I cannot open links from a discussion board I frequent nor can I open links from my email. Also after opening my email, I cannot go to any other sites except my home page. I can then go no where else.
When I close Firefox and try to reopen it, it does nothing! I have to bring up the Task Manager and end the Firefox process before I can get back in.
To the best of my knowledge, this problem started with the new update to Ver. 3.6.9. I am running Windows XP Media Center 2005

  • Firefox will not open a new window How do I fix it?

When on a web page, If I right click and choose "Open In A New Window", it will open a new window but the window is always blank. I can copy the address and paste in in the new window and it will then take me to the web site but will not automatically open and take me to the site. Is there a fix for this?

Try the Firefox SafeMode. <br />
    ''A troubleshooting mode, which disables most Add-ons.'' <br />
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default Theme.)''
    # You can open the Firefox 4/5/6/7 SafeMode by holding the '''Shft''' key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    # Or use the Help menu item, click on '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' while Firefox is running. <br />
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the Firefox shortcut (without the Shft key) to open it again.''
If it is good in the Firefox SafeMode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. <br />

  • Can you prevent Firefox from EVER opening a new window without approval?

Many websites open a new advertising window when you click ANYWHERE on the webpage. On occasion they are so ill-behaved that they effectively hijack your browser, not allowing you to close the window or navigate away, and rather than risk getting a virus I usually kill Firefox from the task manager... not exactly an ideal way to shut down!
Is there any way to get Firefox to ask my permission before opening a new window, or ideally let me add websites to a whitelist so they are allowed to open new windows, or less ideally let me add websites to a blacklist so they are NEVER allowed to open new windows?
I am well aware that this is "normal" behavior and unfortunately falls outside of the controls that prevent pop-ups, because in some cases you DO want to allow a website to open a new window, but in my experience this is the exception and not the rule so forcing me to approve the new window would be nice, but as I said being able to whitelist approved sites would be ideal.

Thanks, dmcritchie! On your advice I have been using ADP for a couple of weeks, and I think that took care of my problem!

  • What does this mean when I try to open a new window "Exc in ev handl: TypeError: brw is undefined

The above message pops up when I click on new window, once I click OK the message goes and a blank new window does appear. It has also just happened when I was in BBC language site and tried to open a link, the message appeared but once I clicked OK the message went and the link did open. It does not happen when I open a new tab. This has only just started to happen over the last few days.

This issue can be caused by the McAfee Site Advisor extension

  • Firefox Won't Open a New Window

I'm setting up my new iMac and installed Firefox as my internet browser. If I close all the browser windows, it won't open another window even by clicking on File>New Window or using keyboard shortcuts. I have to close the program entirely and reopen it to be able to open a window. Any ideas?

  • Why won't firefox open a hot link in a new tab? I have selected the setting that is supposed to do this, but Firefox insists upon opening a new window, every time! It's annoying as hell.

OK...ummmm, I'm running Mac OS10.4.11 (not so sure about the last two digits, but you get the idea). I installed the latest Firefox update maybe a week ago... my monitor crapped out yesterday, so I replaced it with a bigger one that I had lying around. I have used this monitor with this machine before, and had no problems with getting Firefox to open links that I clicked on in a new tab. As per your Help site, I checked the monitor's 'size' and it was as always. I even reduced the 'size' of the monitor, but no joy.

  • Set hotmail as home - Hit home button Firefox starter page opens in new tab - I DON'T WANT THAT

how do I get firefox from opening another tab when I hit the home button.

I don't have multiple home pages listed and I reset the preferences to default. The issue didn't change; the FF start page and my home page still load every time I start FF. It's annoying.

  • The "open new Tab" commands either menu or the +tab tab do not work at all. A new tab is only created when an existing site opens a new window.

happens all the time. The tab "tab" on the right of the open browser tab does not work and neither does the menu File/New Tab.

Uninstall the Ask toolbar and it should work again. There is a compatibility issue with the Ask toolbar and Firefox that prevents new tabs from being opened.

  • Every time firefox starts it opens a second window to check for Plug in updates!

The first time, I updated all but the Adobe Reader. It crashed.
I have turned off adobe, and still, every time I start Firefox the update plugins opens as the second window

That is a bug with blocklisting plugins that has been fixed.<br />
You can correct this issue by forcing the file blocklist.xml to update or wait until Firefox updates the file.<br />
That update will remove the severity="0" flags in the file that cause the problem.

  • When Firefox starts it opens a page other than what I set Preferences - General - Startup to do.

When I have logged on to Ubuntu as "Bob" Firefox shows www.bob.com at startup. When I have logged on to Ubuntu as "Another" Firefox shows www.another.com. "Show my windows and tabs from last time" works but the www.bob.com shows in an additional tab. Home page is not changed. "Show my home page" works ok too but the www.bob.com shows in an additional tab.
