When first installing iTunes
Hello and thanks to all who take the time to help me out. First, I have used iTunes before, but by no means am I a poweruser. This is what I would like to know: can I install iTunes on my c drive but actually have the library on my external hd?
I have a 500gb external, but on my machine my biggest fixed disc is hardly larger than my iPod hd. If I fill my pod from my fixed disc I basically have to forget them for any other purpose which is just stupid. I find it hard to believe that iTunes is so poorly designed as not to allow the user to decide where the library resides.
When I recently re-installed Windows I copied my existing iTunes folder onto my external hd. Ideally I would like to re-install iTunes and tell it the library should be on my external drive, then in theory I could just dump the content from the backup copy of my old iTunes install. Is this at all feasible?
I know about managing my music manually, but I want to use Apple Lossless and of course would need iTunes for this. Maybe I am making things far to complicated, I really don't know. I actually have just now re-installed iTunes to see and things don't look good. Under the preferences and I directed iTunes to make the iTunes Music folder on my external drive rather than the c drive, iTunes ignored this. What next? Thanks for any suggestions.

Thank you for your reply. I ended up blending a few things to resolve the problem. Your technique alone would have been enough I suspect, but sadly I had two library files in the original backup location. When iTunes first grabbed the library as you guided me to do, it grabbed an old copy.
I had to nuke the old library out of the directory, make a new directory and dumped the various folders containing the albums into this directory. I then used my text editor (UltraEdit32) to open the library xml file. I located the line in the file where the path to the old library was referenced, changed it to reflect the new directory. I then went into the preferences and indicated that iTunes music folder was the new directory.
When I used iTunes to then add new albums to the library happily it did indeed use this new directory! However all the folders containg albums I had put inside the new directory had to be added into the library one at a time via the Add Folder To Library option.
The long and short of it is that things worked fine, iTunes is installed on my c drive and the music files on my external drive as I wanted. And to boot I was able indeed to use all of my albums previously used by iTunes. I'm sure this has been a little bit of a dirty fix, but at the end of the day I have tunes and I'm mobile so all is good. Thanks again.

Have you completed all windows update including service Pack1? If not, please complete all the windows update then follow steps below to re-install all over.
1. Go to Microsoft website to fix install and Unistall problems. Click "Run now" from Fix it to remove all iTunes & related installer files:
http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall
Be aware that Windows Installer CleanUp Utility will not remove the actual program from your computer. However, it will remove the installation files so that you can start the installation, upgrade, or uninstall over.

When I installed iTunes 11 on a Windows 8 system the installation did not seem to work correctly. There is no sidebar and no ribbon w/ File, Edit, etc. I tried to use an external hard drive to move from an older computer using XP to the new one w/ Wdw 8. I thought if I deleted iTunes from the Wdw 8, I could reload it. Apparently I did not delete the music files because they appeared in the format I complained about, no side bar or ribbon. Can anyone walk me through the process of deleting everything and reinstalling? I am not very computer savy so a step by step would really be appreciated.
Thank you,ctrl B - Show menus

When I installed itunes into my old computer (loaded with Windows Vista) it deleated my CD burner and would only allow me to burn via itunes - I had to go in to Best Buy to have them fis the problem but was told not to download new updates for itunes or it would do the same. with this fix I am not able to burn CDs from itunes which is a bummer. If I download itunes onto my new computer (loaded with Windows 7) is it going to do the same thing or has this problem been resolved?
Copy them from your old computer, or your backuo copy of your old computer. to your new one.
The music sync is one way - computer to ipod. the exception is itunes purchases. -

When I install iTunes all my shortcuts bring me to iTunes
When I installed iTunes, my shortcuts all bring me to iTunes instead of where the shortcut says. The iTunes icon is on all the shortcuts.
Doublechecking something, mike. Are all the icons in your Start Menu also iTunes icons?
How about files and programs icons in "Computer" (For example down in your "Program files" folder?) Are they showing iTunes icons, or the normal sorts of icons?
(Trying to work out here if the file association for .lnk (shortcut) files has gotten set to "iTunes". If so, there's some registry fixes available that might be of assistance with this.) -

How long does face detection take when first install Aperture3?
How long does face detection take when first install Aperture 3?
I just upgraded from Aperture 2 to Aperture 3 and installed latest updates to Aperture 3.2.2 and I have a message at the bottom of the browser: "Face detection..." with a spinning wheel. This has been going for over an hour. But it took six hours for Aperture 3 to upgrade my Aperture 2 library (approximately 60,000 photos). Am I looking at the same sort of time frame for "face detection"?Thanks for the info... but I just answered my own question: I went to Aperture Preferences (thanks to someone's suggestion that this is where to turn off Faces) and an activity screen popped up showing Face detection progress. (Cool!) It's going thru all my images... and right now the status is 4,080 of 55,182. Very nice. So looks like I have a few more hours to go!

I have a windows 7 & when I install iTunes all the icons on my desktop turn into iTunes icon & any icon I click on opens the iTunes app
First I'd set up a System Restore point. Then try applying the LNK registry fix from the following document:
