When i am texting the keyboard blocks the message being typed how do i move the keyboard so it doesn't block the message

I have an iPad Air WiFi 16GB.When I try to text a message the keyboard blocks the message area and I cannot see what is being written. It worked fine then just out of the blue started blocking messages. I’ve tried dragging it down but it won’t stay.Help is appreciated. Thanks

Also go to settings> general> keyboard> split keyboard> off. Now the keyboard won't leave the bottom of the page.
