When I attempt to erase my hard drive, I am unable to select the "security options" tab?

I wish to erase my hard drive and for the contents of the hard drive to be unrecoverable. In order to do this, I have done some research and I believe there is a tab called "security options" when I go into "Disk Utility" and click "Macintosh HD." This tab is indeed there for me, however, I am unable to click it. What I mean by this is basically when an option is there but you simply cannot click it because... well, yeah, that's exactly my problem! I don't know why I'm unable to click it.
Thanks in advance!

Do a backup. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions. Then select the Erase tab. Format is Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Select Secure at the level you want. Erase and then reinstall the OS.

  • When I try to erase my hard drive by using the disk utility, the format is in gray and won't let me erase. What do I do?

Ive got an iMac with bootcamp on it. Recently my computer has slowed down and I want to restore it to factory settings. The format says mac osx extended (journaled), but its in grey. Also, the security options and erase buttons are gray. The only button I am able to press is "Erase Free Space." I have a feeling that i might have to delete my bootcamp partition first. What do I do?

To erase the OSX on your harddisk you have to boot your Mac from the OSx Install DVD that came with your Mac.
You can't erase the OSx from which your Mac is booted.

  • Will iLife be deleted when I erase my hard drive and reinstall Snow Leopard and the Applications with the disks that came with the computer?

I plan to restore my computer to factory settings to have a fresh start but i dont know if all the ilife applications will still be there (imovie, iphoto, etc). Or is the ilife applications included in the Applications Install DVD?

Yes, they are, unless you have a machine which shipped with Mac OS X Server, in which case you wouldn't have them to begin with.

Selecting paper size in the first sreen tellis iPhoto what papery you are going to use - it does not tell the printer what paper to use - printer specific options on on the last (second or third if you customize the print) screen where you tell the print any specifics like paper source (typically printers need to you tell them where a specific paper is loaded - they do not really know the sizes in each paper tray)

  • How do I erase my hard drive

Little help, please.  I want to erase the hard drive on my iMac so we sell it.  I do not want any data inadvertently passed onto the next user.  I am familiar with disk utility and have gone there but when I click on the hard drive it is subdue and I am unable to select the security options or the erase key.  Can you help, please.  Must be doing something wrong...
    Thanks,

If the computer did not originally comes with Lion on it then 1) you cannot sell it with Lion on it because Lion upgrades are attached to your AppleID and it's also a violation of the license agreement. You will need to contact Apple and purchase the original OS X install discs as I mentioned in my original post.
However IF your machine is a mid 2011 iMac that came with Lion pre-installed already then you need to boot into the Recovery Volume and use Disk Utility to Erase your disk. How you do that is:
When you hear the start-up tone hold down the Option key and choose the Recovery Volume and choose Disk Utility.
Click the erase tab and make sure the Format is set to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and click erase.
Then to reinstall Lion on the HD, exit Disk Utility and choose Reinstall Mac OS X.

  • I recently bought Mac book air and was doing a fresh install of 10.7 and I erased my hard drive and now want to reinstall osx but it keeps telling me that it can't find install information for this machine and to call AppleCare.

Any one have any suggestions?? AppleCare is closed right now

    Hmmmm...
When you say OSX, which version do you want to reinstall?
Was the MacBook Air new when you bought it?  Did it originally come with Lion?  Mountain Lion?
When you say you erased your hard drive, did something go wrong while you were installing Lion?
Were you installing it from a file downloaded from the App Store, or from another source?
When you press and hold "Option" while you boot up, does "Recovery" come up as an option to boot your computer?
If so, you can reinstall Lion from the recovery part of the drive and (hopefully) everything should be fine.
Let me know if you still need a hand with your MacBook and we'll see if we can get you going again.

  • How can I erase my hard drive?

I just sold my computer. How can I erase the hard drive? Thanks1

To prepare it for sale you should follow these instructions:
What to do before selling or giving away your Mac
    In addition to the above:
If you enabled FileVault, disable it in System Preferences > Security & Privacy.
"Deauthorize" your iTunes account. Same for Audible if you have one.
System Preferences > iCloud > de-select "Back to My Mac" and "Find my Mac".
Sign out of iCloud. Select "Delete from Mac" when it appears.
    Then:
Start your Mac with its original System Installation DVD (if your Mac shipped with one) or OS X Recovery (if it didn’t).
Remove any Open Firmware password if you created one: select Firmware Password Utility from the Utilities menu and remove it.
Select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
Remove any partitions you may have created.
Select the Mac's hard disk icon, then select the "Erase" tab.
Select the "Security Options" button and erase the disk.
The more "securely" you erase the disk, the longer it will take. The fastest method is sufficient since all but the most expensive techniques and equipment will be able to recover securely erased data.
When it finishes, quit Disk Utility.
Select Install Mac OS X from the Utilities menu. Do not create any user accounts.
When it finishes, shut down the computer.
If you want to install the bundled apps that were included with your Mac, restart by using your Applications DVD and install the bundled apps.
Don't forget to include any DVDs that came with your iMac, your AppleCare certificate if you bought it, printed documentation, even the box if you still have it.
Execute a bill of sale showing the Mac's serial number.
Once no longer in your possesion, remove the Mac from your devices in My Support Profile.

  • Lightroom 5.3 crashes when I try to import from hard drive

I was running LR 5.2 and when this happened I upgraded to 5.3, same result. When I go to import from my hard drive, it allows me to select the drive and open the top level folders on the drive. When I go to open the lower level folders where my images are stored, the program stops working. The whole screen grays over and eventually says that the program has stopped working...windows wants to close it and check for a solution.
I have rebooted the computer, same result.
    Win 7 64 bit, i5, 16 gig RAM

It is a known issue that Adobe isn't discussing.
The best workaround I have found is to remove any videos from the storage media then try importing -- works as it should (minus videos) for me now.
I would not suggest the normal suggestion of rebooting....I mean deleting your preferences file (I already tried it).

  • I had to erase my hard drive and now when I try to sync the I phone or Ipad it says I will loose my data on the iphone or ipad .  how can I sync the phone or I pad without loosing my music ?

I had to erase my hard drive and reinstall ox snow leopard.  when i try to sync my Iphone or Ipad it says that my device was synced with another computer and I will loose my songs on the Iphone or ipad and it will be replaced by the library that is on my computer now.  The library is empty since I had to erase the hard drive.  Can anyone help?

    1) ensure iTunes is authorized for your iTunes store account(s)
    2) connect your device and right-click or control-click it in the iTunes Source list, then choose transfer purchases from the shortcut menu that appears.
    3) sync the device
iTunes will wipe the iPhone/iPad but, since you transferred your purchases in the previous step, your content will be in your library and you can re-populate the iPhone/iPad with it.
above works for purchases from the iTunes store. for everything else, check out this post by Zevoneer.
also, there are PhoneView and iRip.

  • I had to erase my hard drive and then reinstall everything back from my passport external hard drive. Now my iPhoto edit is not working. I get a blank screen when I want to edit. The photos show up in the library but I cannot edit them. Help?

I had to erase my hard drive and then reinstall everything back from my passport external hard drive. Now my iPhoto edit is not working. I get a blank screen when I want to edit. The photos show up in the library but I cannot edit them. Help?

There are several possible causes for the Black Screen issue
*1. Permissions in the Library* : Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair permissions.
*2. Minor Database corruption*: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
*3. A Damaged Photo*: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). Will the file open in Preview? If not then the file is damaged. Time to restore from your back up.
*4. A corrupted iPhoto Cache*: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto folder from HD/Users/Your Name/Library/ Caches...
*5. A corrupted preference file*: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    If none of these help:
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

Do a backup,  preferable 2 separate ones on 2 drives. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors.  Reformat the drive using Disk Utility/Erase Mac OS Extended (Journaled), then click the Option button and select GUID. Then re-install the OS.

    many thanks Carl.

You must boot from another drive in order to erase the system drive.
Try starting up with Snow Leopard DVD inserted and C depress. That should get you booted from the DVD. Then start Disk Utitlity from DVD and erase the disk then you should be able to install Snow Leopard.
Remember that everything will be removed from the disk when you erase it and install Snow Leopard so backup first.

  • I erased by Hard drive without backing up. Now, when I put the install disc one inside, it says that Mac os x cannot be installed on this computer. The computer was running Mac os x 10.5.8. Any help?

I erased by Hard drive without backing up. Now, when I put the install disc one inside, it says that Mac os x cannot be installed on this computer. The computer was running Mac os x 10.5.8. Any help?

Boot from your DVD by switching on the Mac & inserting the disc, restart it & hold the "C" key. Once the installer window loads & you have selected your language, choose Disk Utility from the Utilities Menu. You will then need to select your disk from the menu within Disk Utility & choose how you wish to format. It should be formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Once it has formatted, you should then be able to install the OS.
PLEASE REMEMBER...that formatting a disk will completely erase it's content. Be sure that you don't wish to recover any of your previous content before doing any of the above.

I had the exact same issue; Lion recovery from Command + R would hang with the logs showing the same message.  To resolve, I used Disk Utility to remove the recovery partition.  My Air then used Internet Recovery to load all the tools.  When using Reinstall via Internet it worked just fine.

I need to erase my hard drive. But the drives are grey when I go to Disk Utility.

Restart the computer with the Command and R keys held down and use the Disk Utility from there. If you're going to sell or give away the computer, press Option as well.
