When I burn a DVD it doesn't work when I play it on a DVD player

This has been driving me insane, i have used + and - dvds. I have used them in all DVD players and they do not work, is there anything I can do to repair this? Thank you for the time and patience.

No, you're not.
The filename extension .mov designates a QuickTime file, not a DVD format. You are probably using .mov as a source for your DVD.
First, you need a DVD authoring app, which will convert .mov to the type of files required by the DVD-Video specification.
Second, you need a burning app which will burn the disc not only in the required format (UDF bridge) but also in the required layout (files need to be burned in a certain order).
(The two requirements -- authoring and burning -- may be combined in a single app.)
If you don't have it, you can still obtain
iDVD
<http://www.apple.com/ilife/idvd/>
Other options are,
Roxio Toast
<http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/toast/titanium/>
NTI DragonBurn
<http://www.ntidragonburn.com/en/us/product/dragon_burn.asp?>
The above are commercial apps. If you're looking for simpler, cheaper, or open-source apps, try
DVD Image Utility
<http://geek.thinkunique.org/2007/07/17/dvd-image-utility/>
Disco
<http://discoapp.com/>
no longer supported, but free, simple, and runs well under SL.
LiquidCD
<http://www.maconnect.ch/>
free; iffy support, but, again, simple, and runs well under SL.
Burn
<http://burn-osx.sourceforge.net/Pages/English/home.html>
open source; not clear how active development and support are, but runs well under SL.
If you are a Terminal kind of guy, get
mkisofs
<http://cdrecord.berlios.de/private/cdrecord.html>
(part of the cdrtools kit)
Use mkisofs to create the disc image, and burn it with hdiutil or drutil. (Some of the free options mentioned above actually use mkisofs.)
Keep in mind that the list above is by no means exhaustive.

  • IDVD selectively won't recognize .mp4 format - how to burn for dvd player?

    Hi -
    I'm trying to burn a .mp4 movie for my gf's family so they can watch it on their TV instead of my tiny comp. After trying DiskUtility and iTunes (both to no avail, DU wouldn't even allow me to select a .mp4 format to burn on the DVD; iTunes burnt the movie, but it doesn't play on the DVD player ...). I thought I'd try iDVD, but it won't recognize the movie I'd like to burn - says the format is unrecognized. Tried with another movie, same format (.mp4) and it worked just fine.
    I'm really at a loss - I didn't expect it would be so difficult to burn a DVD! Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
    Kind regards,
    Rax

    Alright, my results correspond with Russ' hypothesis: both videos I tried are in the same format & at the same FPS, the only difference b/w them is the audio. The one that worked is Stereo (L R), the one that does not is the 5.1.
    Unfortunately, I do not have Quick Time Pro, I just have QTP 10.1 that came w/ Lion (& an older version that I added b/c it allows playback speed control). Here, the export options are:
    480p
    720p
    iPod touch & iPhone 3GS
    iPad, iPhone 4 & Apple TV
    Audio only
    None of these were an obvious choice to me, any suggestions? I've heard something about "Toast", would this be an easier / better option?
    Thank you for on-going help. Very much appreicated.
    Kind regards,
    Rax

  • DVD Burns; no DVD Player Playback?

    I am able to burn a DVD using DVDSP4 (Universal) and it will play back on any Mac or PC I try it on. However, putting it in various DVD Players (I've tried at least a dozen) will have it only say "Loading..." , then freeze or say "No Disc" on some; others work fine. I also tried a similar project in iDVD with the same results. Is there incompatibility with Mac-burned DVDs with some types of DVD players? I have tried Panasonic, JVC and Sony DVD Players; Apple, JVC and HP DVD-R's and different combinations of each.

    It is strange that so many different players are having problems with so many diiferent forms of media, usually it is just one or two combinations and not that prevavlent.
    I know some people who get iDVD to work better than DVD SP on a problematic player they have, but it is usually just one (i.e., they have one of many players act "weird") And I tried to get DVD SP discs to work on the problem player, but in fact it was sporadic as you have described.
    If you can go through each step of how you are making the DVDs, compression rates, Dolby/apac rates, burn speeds etc, there may be something there (you should encode .mov outside of DVD SP)
    On thing to try is to put a small few second move/FBI warning or something on the dsic, some people have indcated going to first play of a menu will mess up players for them

    Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
    See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] and [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
    If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the ''Safe mode'' start window.
    You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (on Mac: "Firefox > Quit")

  • Unsupported format after burning on DVD Player

    I burn many discs on iDVD and always do it the same way - I have found that a few of the discs are unable to be read on my player after burning.  So some work fine and some cannot be read in the Player.  I get the message "Unsupported Format" on my player.  Any suggestions?

    If iDVD didn't have sound before you authored the DVD, you won't have sound after the DVD is created.  Did you create a self contained Quicktime movie out of your editing system before importing into iDVD?  Did the Quicktime file have sound in the Quicktime Player?  Here's an article I wrote about transferring your HD footage to DVD.  You need to break the process up into steps to avoid problems.

  • When I play any video with any player, it stops after few minutes

    When I want to play any video it stops after few minutes as freeze. Sometimes it continues without sound and others stops completly. I try to play it with more than one players, but same.
    The video it's .mkv
    I tried with:
    - Quicktime X with Perian
      - MplayerX
      - Mplayer OS X Extended

    You should probably take it to the closest apple retail store and have someone at the genuis bar help you. If you dont want to do that you should probably purchase a software or use a free trail version of one to run a virus check.Ive found that Mcfee is a good virus scan program.

  • The play button on HTML5 video doesn't work, however the play option in the context menu does

    I have embedded a video using HTML5 using the mp4, webm, and ogg formats.
    In Firefox the video poster displays as do the native controls. When the video is clicked on (either on the poster or the play button on the controls) the poster disappears to be replaced with the first frame of the video. However the video then fails to play.
    If i right click over the video and select play it plays fine, similarly if i then click the pause button it pauses, the play button still does not work though.
    The video plays in all other browsers that i have tested in without an issue.

    Hi Obverse,
    Thank you for contacting support. To better understand how the video is embedded, could you please post a link to the video or an example of where the HTML play button does not play a video?

  • I have a XPS Dell 420 . I burned a CD of my songs but can't play them on a CD Player. Only Playlist.

    I need to know why I can't play my burned Cd on a Player?

    You may have to try deleting all the music from your phone (by going to Settings>General>Usage>Music, swipping All Music and tapping Delete), then sync it all back on with iTunes in order to fix this.

  • TS3474 Display doesn't work, although iPod plays through other devices

    Anybody know how to fix this?

    If you have tried all of the suggestions mentioned under the appropriate section in this Apple support document, you may need to have your iPod serviced or replaced either by Apple or a third party service.  It's a hardware issue with the iPod's LCD display.
    iPod nano (6th generation): Hardware troubleshooting
    Some users were able to resolve it by restoring the iPod numerous times and others corrected it by letting the battery fully drain and then charged it back up and restored it in iTunes.
    If the Nano is still under Apple's 1 year warranty against manufacturing defects, Apple may swap it out for you at no cost if they don't conclude the issue to be the result of abuse or accidental damage.  If you have an Apple Store nearby schedule an appointment with them and show them what you are experiencing.

  • Just burnt a playlist to a disc... why is the sound quality so quiet when I play that disc through CD player??

    ?

    I have had the exact problem, but with both the Apple earbuds and Skull Candy earbuds.  I have used the latter on my iPhone4 for months without any problems.  I have long phone calls and this will happen 10 - 30 minutes into a call, but seems to happen more frequently as the calls continue.  As you mentioned, if I pop into speaker mode and back out, the problem usually clears up.  I returned my original 4s after experiencing this problem, but my new one had this problem immediately.

  • DVD Studio burn works on computer, error on DVD Player.  iDVD works fine.

    I'm a new DVD Studio user. I've spent a few days researching this problem but am running out of answers. I've had no problems using iDVD. I haven't got a successful burn from DVD Studio as of yet. I've used +R and -R and a few different brands of each to make sure that's not the problem.
    I've created the movie in FC Pro 5 and exported the movie as a Quicktime Movie. Imported into DVD Studio. Created a menu. Simulator works fine. Pressed Burn. After burn the DVD Player pops up and plays the movie fine. Put it into DVD player and receive an error message.
    Bitrate looks to be set at 4.0Mbps - 7.0Mbps, One Pass VBR.
    Any advise would be great.

    You know what is strange I know a few people who have DVD Players that play thingss from iDVD perfectly, but seem to choke out on DVD SP projects. Actually tried it myself to see (in other words, proper compression etc.), the DVD SP discs fail (though they will play on other machines fine) but the iDVD discs work. And you would htink since iDVD uses PCM audio they would have more issues

  • How to make a photo CD to work in a DVD-player?

    I burn photo CDs in Finder in my MacBook. No problem with the burning, but the CD doesn't work in my DVD-player. I can see some of the photos, but some are just grey "items". A photografer told me to use a setting in the burning program that burns the CD in PC format. That would make my photo CD to work in PCs and DVD players. The problem is that I can't find any settings like that when I burn CDs in finer. Are there any? Shall I use some other program to burn?

    It’s not a good solution. (I’m no expert at IPhoto.) The manual in iPhoto says that you have to export the photos to a burning map in Finder if want the photo CD to work in Windows and PCs. Then the problem is back. I can see the photos, but there is grey “item” for every photo.
    The other way is to burn direct from iPhoto. OK, no grey items. But the photos are “down sized” in quality and not full size if you want to look at them on your TV via your DVD player.

  • Convert iMovie Project to NTSC for Viewing on DVD Player

    I have been trying to find some application (relatively cheap) that will convert an iMovie project to NTSC.  I found one on line for $30, but didn't know if anyone had suggestions for a cheaper solution that is realiable.  Thanks
    PS - If iMovie can do it, PLEASE let me know how because I have looked and I haven't found anything that will let me burn in DVD player format.

    Hi
    PAL to NTSC or NTSC to PAL
    A. Copying commercial DVDs - No Not possibly at all - Not even legal to discuss.
    B. Home made DVDs (DVDs without copy protection)
    C. Movies from iMovie or FinalCut
    • Save as full quality QuickTime .mov and convert this with JES_Deinterlacer  (free on internet)
    NTSC ---> PAL.
    • Most often not necessary - Most stand alone PAL DVD-players playback NTSC
    (if TV is old in BL/W)
    PAL ---> NTSC.
    • If played on Mac - not necessary AT ALL
    • If on NTSC DVD-player - CONVERSION IS NEEDED - nearly no Stand alone NTSC-DVD-players
    playback PAL at all.
    To do this You need to convert the PAL DVD to streaming.DV or full quality QuickTime .mov
    • I use Roxio Toast™ to do this (There are no free converter)
    • JES_Deinterlacer  (free on internet) to convert to NTSC
    • Set up an NTSC project (29.97fps or 30) in iDVD and import then burn
    I burn to
    • Verbatim DVD-R
    • Set down burn speed in iDVD to x1 or x4 recommended by many
    • Secure a minimum of 25Gb free space on internal boot hard disk before burning (IMPORTANT)
    PAL is 25 fps and an analog TV standard of 625 lines
    NTSC is 29.97 fps and 520 lines
    NTSC (29.97fps) 520 lines - about 640x480 pixels (square) 720x480 rectangular (narrow) pixels
    PAL  (25 fps)   625   lines - about 768x576 pixels (square) 720x576 rectangular (narrow) pixels
    to use a photo 702x480 resp 576 then add 9 pixels on each side to add together as 720
    If iDVD hangs on PAL or NTSC.
    Bengt W wrote
    Deleting iDVD pref. file - should return You into NTSC mode.
    Yes iDVD can switch to PAL - BUT as You see with a rather lousy result. (so will other way around too)
    a. Need to convert to PAL - most often not - Most PAL-player can playback NTSC
    and on a fairly new TV in color. (old TV in Bl/W)
    (Other way around - from PAL to NTSC most often a must - few NTSC-player can use PAL)
    b. IF MUST - then use JES_Deinterlacer to do this conversion - so much better and free.
    My list on this (or rather PAL --> NTSC - just think the other way around)

    Thank you SDMacuser. I dumped all the plist icons with no result, and was getting pretty plist off when it occurred to me to delete all the previous dvd.proj files. Bingo. That did the trick. So thank you for all your help and the additional information you provided.
