When I call someone I cant hear anything

When I dial a number I cannot hear the dial tone, or indeed the person who answers the phone, unless I switch to loud speaker. I have checked all my volume settings etc, anyone have any ideas how to resolve this? All updates are up to date etc etc. many thanks

PS I have tried:
switching on / off
Plugging headphones in / out several times
checking for fluff / debris in the headphone jack
I can still call someone using headphones or speaker phone, but not as 'normal', I will try a full restore....unless anyone has any better ideas

Apple Store Genius makes all decisions regarding implementation of Warranty Coverage. Maybe you have AppleCare coverage and don't even know. If the Genius decides to cover under Warranty then it was worth taking to Apple. If Genius decides no Warranty, then replacement iPhone 4 is $149.

good question. try to record a voice memo on your phone. if you can't hear yourself, it means likely that your mic isn't working, which would explain why no one can hear you on the phone

I found a document that mentions symptoms similar to what you're experiencing - having a hard time hearing and being heard. I'd follow the troubleshooting steps within and see if that resolves the issue:

Thanks for the question. Since you're saying the mic is working in other applications, I'd try out the general iPhone troubleshooting assistant and do steps 1, 4 and 5 to see if that solves the issue.

When I try to make a call it will go through and I can hear the other person but they cannot hear me, is there a setting that disables the speaker when using the headphones to try to make a call, also speakerphone automatically goes on when I start a call which I do not like, any suggestions how to fix this?

There may be a defect in the phone. As you bought it in the US the only place you can get it looked at is in the US.
When you say you bought it new, unlocked did you buy it directly from an Apple store? If you did not it was hacked to unlock it, which could also be your problem. Apple stores are the only place in the US that sells legitimately unlocked iPhones.

Turn the volume up... in call volume and sounds (ring, notifications, etc) are seperate volume controls.

Basic troubleshooting steps clearly outlined in the User Guide are restart, reset, restore from backup, restore as new device.
If you have been through ALL of the troubleshooting steps and you're still having problems, then you'll need to bring your phone to Apple for investigation.

Try turning down the speak volume (System Preferences->Sound->Output->Output Volume) or the microphone gain (System Preferences->Sound->Input->Input Volume). Do this on both sides of the call.

I have the problem with my iPhone and my friends have this problem too.
My iPhone have the problem about calling and answer the call. When I use my iPhone to call I can't hear anything from my iPhone but the person that I call can answer it but when answer both of us can't hear anything and when I put my iPhone to my face the screen is still on and when I quit the phone application and open it again it will automatic call my recent call. And when my friends call me my iPhone didn't show anything even the missed call I'm only know that I missed the call from messages from carrier. Please check these problem I restored my iPhone for 4 time now in this week. I lived in Hatyai, Songkhla,Thailand and many people in my city have this problem.

Apple isnt here. this is a user based forum for technical questions. The solution is to restart, reset, and restore as new which is in the manual after that get it replaced for hard ware failure. if your within your one year warranty its replaced if it is out of the warranty then it is 199$

If there's an Apple store nearby make an appointment with the genius bar to have it checked. Be sure to sync it and back it up, as well as import your photos and videos to your computer and back up your contacts separately (such as by sync them with iCloud) in case it needs to be replaced.
