WHEN I CLICK A LINK, IT DOESN'T OPEN IN A NEW TAB

I do a google search and then when I used to click a link it would open in a new tab. However it no longer does this. I have tried all the following remedies to no avail.
I have tried under Tools>Options>Tabs and checking and unchecking the open new windows in a new tab.
I have restarted the computer.
I have tried it in safe mode and still no luck.
I have tried typing in the url about:config and checked the specs but didn't work.
I tried "Open Link in new tab" add on
None of these damn things work and I'm frustrated as %$%$.
I am using firefox 25.0.1. What the heck can i do to fix things. Please someone out there help me with this I'm going insane.

For the Google website you can set preferences on the Google results page via the gear icon in the top right corner, click that button to open the menu list and select Search settings.
* http://www.google.com/preferences?hl=en
Where results open: Open search results in a new browser window.
You can set the Boolean pref browser.search.openintab to true on the about:config page to open the search results page in a new tab when doing a search via the search bar on the Navigation Toolbar.

I have already made sure the 'Open new windows in a new tab instead' option is checked. It doesn't make any difference (at least not with bookmarks).

Google search and other websites have a user preference that can be set to open a search result in a new tab or a new window, for users who are logged in to their website.
Otherwise, when you don't have a 3-button mouse or a scroll pad with "middle-click" functionality, you can use '''{Ctrl + Click}''' to open a hyperlink in a new Tab.

• I am having a problem opening new tabs, when I click the + sign, and ask to open in a new tab, the new location opens in the same tab, thereby deleting the open tab

I reloaded an updated firefox, and this feature appears to have been inactivated.

Uninstall the Ask toolbar and it should work again. There is a compatibility issue with the Ask toolbar and Firefox that prevents new tabs from being opened.

• For some reason if I click a link that needs to open in a new window, the new window is blank. This just started happening when firefox updated itself last time

Ever since firefox automatically updated itself, I am not able to open websites in new windows - meaning that if I am on a website and you click a link on it that opens in a new window, that new window is blank. It used to work perfectly. I even checked my foxit reader and that it working well

Hello Angelika.
I should bring your attention to the fact that your user agent says you're using Firefox 3.6, not 3.0. I will remind you that Firefox 3.0 has been discontinued and is no longer supported. Furthermore, it has known bugs and security problems.
As for your problem, you may be having a problem with some Firefox add-on that is hindering your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal?
Whenever you have a problem with Firefox, whatever it is, you should make sure it's not coming from one of your installed add-ons, be it an extension, a theme or a plugin. To do that easily and cleanly, run Firefox in [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode safe mode] and select ''Disable all add-ons''. If the problem disappears, you know it's from an add-on. Disable them all in normal mode, and enable them one at a time until you find the source of the problem. See [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes this article] for information about troubleshooting extensions and theme. You can troubleshoot plugins the same way.
If you want support for one of your add-ons, you'll need to contact its author.

• Not true: Links to other websites open in a new tab so that your App Tab doesn't change.

In the article "What are App Tabs", there's the following statement:
"Links to other websites open in a new tab so that your App Tab doesn't change." That doesn't happen when I make an App Tab in FF 7.01 in Win 7. I want it to happen, but it doesn't. Sometimes I want to keep Gmail open while I open an link in an email. When I click on the link, I expect a new tab to open, but it doesn't. Instead, the App Tab the contains gmail goes to the linked website. How can I stop this from happening?

• The only way I can open a new tab is by right-clicking a bookmarked site and selecting "Open in a New Tab." I can't click on the New Tab + or CTR+T or open via File. WHY?!?

The only way I can open a new tab in Firefox is by right-clicking a bookmarked site and selecting "Open in a New Tab." I can't click on the New Tab + or CTR+T or open via File. WHY don't the other means work?

The Ask Toolbar is causing that in the Firefox 3.6.13+ versions. Uninstall that extension.
There are a couple of places to check for the Ask toolbar:
* Check the Windows Control panel for the Ask Toolbar - http://about.ask.com/apn/toolbar/docs/default/faq/en/ff/index.html#na4
* Also check your list of extensions, you may be able to uninstall it from there - https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Uninstalling+add-ons

• Just learning my track pad; viewed tutorial; when I click a link, message comes up,"open in new window," etc. How to stop messages?

I'm just learning how to use my Track Pad on my MacBook Pro, running iOS 10.9.4. I viewed the tutorial, which helped a lot , but still, when I click a link at odd times (I haven't figured out what triggers it yet) a small window with options such as, 'open in new window' opens up. It doesn't happen all the time. I just want the link to click through without having to deal with the message. When I click it several times, I may finally get it so the link just opens. How can I avoid those messages?

• When I click a link in a website, it loads in another tab, however i get 100's of new tabs that load with "untitled" and when i close firefox, it just opens by itself again and again

I was on my son's school website and I was looking to click the link to his teachers personal web-page. When I did, many, many "untitled" new tabs kept opening in the same screen. In fact it did not stop until I restarted my computer.
When I tried to close mozilla firefox page, it would then open up a new screen again doing the many, many "untitled" tabs. Every time I clicked the red X at the top of the screen, it would load a new page doing this.
It also did this on one other web page.
I am sure that there is just some info that needs to be entered for what to do when you click a link, however I have no clue how to change it.

For the list of teachers there are email addresses in the right hand column, did you click on an email address?
If you did that could explain the multiple tabs being opened. What may have happened is you have the mailto protocol set to open Firefox which results in 100s of tabs opening when you click on an email address. For details on fixing that see [[Firefox keeps opening many tabs or windows]], in particular the section on "Change the action for a content type". My guess is you will find mailto is set to "Use Firefox".

• New tab opens when I click email link, this doesn't happen with IE or Chrome

I use a specific website for work. When I click a hyperlink on the website that is supposed to generate an email, it also generates a new tab for no reason. This is a waste of time. This also doesn't happen on the same website in IE or Chrome.

Those are extensions for Firefox. You can access the Firefox Add-ons page using one of these methods:
* Ctrl+Shift+a
* "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Extensions. On the right, enabled extensions are listed alphabetically, with disabled extensions at the bottom.
As a general test for problems caused by any extension, the user can try the same pages/functions in Firefox's Safe Mode. That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode]].
You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:
* "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
* Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
(Not all add-ons are disabled: Flash and other plugins still run)
After Firefox shuts down, a small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (''not'' Refresh).
If the problem goes away, usually that points to an extension as the culprit.
Bear in mind that other aspects of Safe Mode may be more relevant to display glitches (hardware acceleration) or crashes than extensions, but in this case, I'd look at extensions.

• Can Firefox be set up so that when you click on a bookmark it automatically opens in a new window or tab?

I don't have an issue with how the tabs work. But, the other user of my laptop can not distinguish between the concepts of "x" and "+" leading to constant frustration as he opens bookmarks over the tabs he wants left open.
I thought it might help if a clicked bookmark opened automatically in a new tab or window rather having to click on the add a tab for a blank tab before opening a bookmark. But, I don't see how that could be set up, or if it can be, in the options menu.

Install this Add-on: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/open-link-in-new-tab/
