When i click on applications folder Trash opens as well?
I see there is a short cut icon on the folder applications on my task bar, when i open applications from my finder the trash opens? i think i may have accidently moved the folder into the trash can right beside it ,at one point. i can 't see anything that looks obvious to me (lol) and i am not tech savy enough to know what else to look for .
Or maybe i am off on the wrong track all together, can someone help?
Question is , how can i get my origional application folder back , not the shortcut?

Also my desk top ill show you my application folder is the one with the acrobat reader on top and a copule of other things in behind. i decided to empty my trash bin, when i realized i still had my applications even if they were not looking right

hi when i open my application folder, all the application is shown in trash folder. when i click the application it says this app is in trash first move it out. and when i try to open through finder> go it says this file doesn't exist. can some1 plz help? how can i put all my application through application folder?
Something really odd is going on. In your first screen shot, I noticed that the Applications folder does not have the proper icon displayed in the side bar. Also, in the title bar it lists it as Applications 08-59-29-909.
Not sure where it's picking up that odd name, unless it's because it's still truly within the Trash folder.
Try this. In the Finder > Preferences > General > turn on "Always open folders in a new window". (I have a feeling you have the default setting with this off).
Now, in Finder > Go > move down and open the Applications Folder from there. Now open the folder where you see all your applications that you show in your screen shot, select all, and move them to this true appliactions folder.
This is what you should properly seeing (but with different apps listed):

I want to open a folder in a separate window by clicking on it. For some reason when I click on a folder it just replaces the one I was just in. I want them both to be open at the same time without having to go through several steps. Old apple operating systems made it easy to have several folders open at one time.
Eric, thanks that works but seems like an extra added step also to do it that way. I've got to move and organize a ton of files and I'm looking for a easy way to get this done. I could also open the folder into a separate tab and then drag the tab out so it becomes an open window but thats a lot of fussing around also with extra steps. Not sure why these newer operating system seems more confusing and less user friendly than what they used to. In the past I could just click on any folder and it would open in a separate window making it really easy to copy or move files from one place to the other just by simply dragging them from one window to the other. Seems like I'm going through several extra steps now to do a simple task.

New Applications folder window opens always half outside the screen
As in the subject, only the first time after a log-in or finder restarting, when i press shiftA to open a new window of applications folder, it opens always in the same ugly position, i.e., on my right side of the desktop, half out of it, half inside. This happens only with this folder. If after restarting finder, restarting the mac, log-out log-in, I press +N to open a new window, it opens correctly on the center of the screen. If I try to grab the new applications window either in the center of the screen or in whatever position I want, next log-in, reboot, etc... it opens in the ugly position as I mentioned.
I tried deleting .Ds_Store file in it, deleting com.apple.finder.plist, repairing permissions (both in leopard and by using the installation dvd), clearing caches, executing maintainance tasks, searching google, asking in it.comp.macintosh, praise the lord, but nothing. Now I'm going crazy, so I need to solve this.
Ps: Maybe this problem start when I installed magnifique. It's an applications that let you change leopard themes (since shapeshifter works only on 10.4). I uninstalled after two days, being shure to delete its preference files and any other stuff that could have been reconducted to it, but the problem is still there. I tried creating a new user and the problem still exists.Hm, I guess that makes sense - the idea is to save power; but the process of trying to transfer control between display interfaces on the fly would have to be somewhat perilous. This (hot swap of display interfaces) is just not the kind of thing that would normally be expected by software designers.
Are the two display subsystems made by nVidia? If not, I'd imagine it to be a practically impossible task to get right. GPU makers aren't normally friendly with one another!
It makes sense that a manual switch to the more powerful GPU would be needed to run Photoshop properly, as complex as it is.

/Applications Folder not opening in Finder but works in Terminal

I recently upgraded to Yosemite, but I'm not sure if this is a Yosemite-related bug.
My application folder (/Applications) does not open in finder (see screenshots)
The spinner keep spinning in the bottom right corner.
Also, when I "Get Info", it keeps calculating the size and never completes.
Also, when I drag the Applications folder to the dock, nothing happens.
However, it works fine in Terminal:
$ cd /; ls -lh

When I go inside the Applications folder (in terminal), I can list all the files in it.Oddly enough, most of them are greyed out, and it only says "total 8" when I have way more than 8 apps.

I can even open my apps in Terminal:
$ cd /Applications; open Notes.app
Mission Control works fine as well.
Does anyone know how I can see my Applications in Finder?
I've tried the usual Disk Utility (verify/repair permissions) and even reinstalled a fresh copy of Mac OSX Yosemite (using recovery).
Note: I did mess around with ~/Library/Preferences immediately after installing Yosemite because of the background flashing bug (I deleted some plists files to fix that bug).

This seems like a 'defaults write tweak' or similar system level modification that is failing on the latest OS.
Revert any applied system tweaks from apps like Secrets or Onyx, that is if you remember applying any (these can be things like 'no-glass dock', no shadows on screenshots etc).
Your Terminal may have the command history saved. Try 'history' in that app to see if you have any 'defaults write' changes listed. Post them here for help to revert them.
It seems likely to me that the 'background flashing bug' mentioned earlier by helloziy was fixing a bad defaults write setting (preferences store the defaults write tweaks). If you have one 'bad tweak', there are probably others elsewhere on the system.
2.
I would consider backing up, erasing the internal disk & clean installing the OS. Migrate ONLY your user data back to the new install (avoid Applications & 'other files' - they could be the reason for this issue). You will need to reinstall apps as you need them.
3.
Another possibility is using EtreCheck to view what everyone has installed & running…

It would basically be a case of comparing affected reports & then removing or reinstalling apps until something changes (a crapshoot).
Etrecheck will not tell you about any 'defaults write' or other system modifications.
4.
I'd backup & consider removing all system preferences. This is drastic & may break many things until you alter the default settings!
Reboot into recovery mode & remove the contents of /Library/Preferences from the boot disk, it will need to be done in Terminal.
You need to do this when the OS isn't running because Mac OS will cache preferences and some values will be written back to new files even after deleting the original files. Keep a backup of the files handy incase the OS breaks on next reboot!
Sorry it's not a solution, but it may help some diagnosis that get you closer to one. -
I reset Firefox. Now when I click on the icon to open Firefox my computer asks me if I want to let Firefox make changes to my computer.
I have read that I should do a clean reinstall. Will I loose all of my open tabs, bookmarks, history etc?
Is there another way to fix the problem other than a reinstall. this would have to be my last resort!A possible cause of this error is that Firefox is set to run as Administrator.
Check that Firefox isn't set to run as Administrator.
Right-click the Firefox desktop shortcut and choose "Properties".
Make sure that all items are deselected in the "Compatibility" tab of the Properties window.
* Privilege Level: "Run this program as Administrator" should not be selected
* "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" should not be selected
Also check the Properties of the firefox.exe program in the Firefox program folder (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\). -

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).

With FireFox as my default browser, I create a shortcut on the desktop as per instructions in 'help' but when I click on the shortcut it opens in a browser which is not even running.

Make absolutely certain that FireFox is designated as your default browser.
Do this: Tools / Options / Advanced / Check Now / correct the setting
OR right click on any shortcut icon / Open With / Choose Default Program / select desired Browser / check Always... box / OK

Could someone help me restore my photos? I was trying to "restore my database" in iPhoto when it shut down - now my thumbnails are distorted, logged under a new name, and when you click on a thumbnail it opens as another photo. I was following another "helpful hint" hold down the option and command key and restart iPhoto - select the top three and you should be able to get rid of the dreaded exclamation point. My MAC ran through the first two options dealing with thumbnails, but crashed during the "restore database" step and now I have a mess. Help, please. Thank you.
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. -

Boot into Safe Boot Mode and see if the problem is present, this turns off third party plug-in's and extentions.

I have 139 items in my Trash, When I click on secure empty trash to erase them it wants to erase 1309 items. Does anyone know what may be going on?
If your erasing packages or programs, they appear like a file, but are actually folders with more files and folders inside.
For instance right click on your Pictures/iPhoto Library and "show package contents" inside is more files and folders of files.
