When I click on my firefox icon on my windows desktop or in my programs menu, nothing happens. Why?

Firefox had been working just fine. Then a few days ago, I noticed the Firefox desktop icon would not open into the program. I uninstalled the program and re-installed it and yesterday it was working but now again the icon, or clicking on other icons driven by firefox or clicking on firefox in the program menu does nothing. Just nothing happens. My desktop here runs on Windows 7. Safari works OK. Thank you.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

You can use one of these to start Firefox in Safe mode:

A possible cause is security software (firewall,anti-virus) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

I suddenly started getting redirected when I click on my Firefox icon. Page says "Paypal and Firefox Simple promotion!" Paypal says it isn't theirs. I can't seem to get past this. I am afraid this a Trojan redirect or keystroke copier.

I'm not sure how or when it happened but whenever I click on any Firefox icon on my desktop, I get redirected to what appears to be a Mozilla Firefox page but there is a window on the screen that says "Paypal and Firefox Simple promotion!, Did you know that Mozilla Firefox is the most safe browser? this is where the button is for the url I was originally trying to get too.

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs. 
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. 
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

When I click on the firefox icon it doesn't start unless I then try and open something else - at which point it starts after the other program -how can I stop this?

When I try and open firefox -either from the start menu or desktop shortcut -it doesn't open unless I open another program first. Eg I click firefox and then say 'word' and then 'word' will open followed by firefox- not only is it a bit irritating but also means I get distracted(!) as I usually chose solitaire because it opens quickly.

Use file-type association feature of the Windows operating system. It is not a Java issue and Java can't access that particular OS feature AFAIK.

Firefox 23 introduced a new security feature. If this is an HTTPS page, insecure content may be blocked. Look for a shield icon on the address bar to the left of the URL. This article has more details about this feature: [[How does content that isn't secure affect my safety?]]
If it's not a secure page or there's no shield, here is a more general suggestion.
When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.
(1) Bypass Firefox's Cache
Use Ctrl+Shift+r to reload the page fresh from the server.
Alternately, you also can clear Firefox's cache completely using:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced
On the Network mini-tab > Cached Web Content : "Clear Now"
If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.
(2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, try either:
* right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
* Alt+t (open the classic Tools menu) > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
In the dialog that opens, you can remove the site's cookies individually.
Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

When I click on the Firefox icon, my homepage opens to about 95% and then it stops reponding. If I click on anything, I get the message that it is "not responding:. I have used Firefox for years with no problems. What can I do?
