When I click on the thumbdrive pictures, it opens to a black box with an explantion mark. I am using iphoto 9.2.1. Note this just started last night.

Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
What version of iPhoto?
As Larry says, your workflow doesn't make a whole lot of sense. If you're using iPhoto only for downloading then you're best off using Image Capture (in your Applications Folder) and just keep the whole database element out if it. If you're using iPhoto also to organise, then what are you using Bridge for? Anything you do in Bridge - or Photoshop - is unavailable in iPhoto if you work this way.

I noticed that I had at least 3 copies of each photo for some reason and when I deleted the two copies I now can't seem to view the one remaining photo. Please advise.

If this is not the case, then post back.
*It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss*
There is never a need for you to enter the iPhoto Library via the Finder. There are no user-serviceable parts there. Every time you do enter the iPhoto Library via the Finder (or any other app) you risk damaging the Library.
Especially when you go and throw away your own photos.
1. They're not copies, they are versions. When you import a pic to iPhoto it's copied into the Originals Folder and a thumbnail version is created (for faster display) in the Data Folder. So, when you look in the iPhoto Window it's the thumbnail that you see. When you double click to edit/view it's the actual file that comes up. If you edit the pic iPhoto creates an edited version. That's in your Modified folder.
2. The "some reason" iPhoto does this is because a: you want it to work fast, b: it preserves your Original file at all costs.
Please advise.
So, what versions did you trash? If you can see the pic in thumbnail form in the iPhoto Window then I have a bad feeling...

I get the same thing... no matter what site i try to pull a pdf for IE10, it gives me the black x... if i use chrome it works, but my client does not want to use a different browser.
I followed the guide that Pat posted... nothing worked... I have uninstalled and reinstalled Java, Adobe reader, Adobe flash,.. upgraded to IE11, then back to IE10 due to medical software that is not compatable with IE11...
The kicker is that my Admin profile works just fine.. no issues.. so i know it has something to do with his profile....

Same here (iPhone 5S). And a friend of mine has the same problem on his iPhone 5. I just installed the newest iOS update (7.1.2) and the problem persists. Although it seems to affect several people yet I can't find anything related to this on the web. If I really want deliberately to trigger the problem I just need to delete a song from the music app and the message will pop up for sure. I am also somewhat reluctant to do a full restore because frankly I expect the same outcome as the thread starter. So hopefully Apple will fix this soon. The main reason for me to buy a $ 800+ phone is to have a device that 'just works' but apparently that's long gone since iOS 7...

Are you syncing your songs right off of itunes itself? because it should be syncing over to the ipod however it is listed in itunes.

Make a temporary, backup copy of your library if you don't already have one (Control-click on the library and select Duplicate from the contextual menu) and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

I tried to sync music from iTunes to my iPhone and when I click on "on this phone" the songs are there, but they are greyed out and have a circle in front of them. I can not click on those songs and when I eject the phone they are not on the phone.

I am having the same problem. I have just tried this. Unplug iphone > open itunes > delete all music from itunes library > close itunes > re-open itunes > add music from original folder > plug in iphone > select songs > press sync > unplug iphone using eject button onscreen > checked phone .... still nothing in music folder on phone. On itunes the "On this iphone" tab the songs remain there but greyed out.

Ipad will connect no problem to other networks.

First thing you need I think is to get your iMac connected to the Internet.
Shut down your iMac and you iPad. Then power off your router. Wait 30 seconds and power up the router.
After the router indicates that it is connected to the Internet then start up your iMac and see if it connects. If the iMac connects to the Internet then your iPad should too.
If this power up sequence doesn't work you'll have to dig into the router setup to make sure it is working properly.
