When I close the screen...

When I close the screen on my MBP it goes to sleep. Does the new O.S. enable me to set it so it does nothing?
I have my sony vaio set to do nothing when I close the lid with XP Pro. If I'm running parallels with windows can I set my MBP this way?
Thanks
Kevin

Welcome to the Forums!
Normally, no. You can run in lid-closed mode if you are using an external display and an external keyboard/mouse. This is supported by Apple:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86286
Lid-closed sleep can be disabled with commands in Terminal, or you can use 3rd party software like SleepLess or InsomniaX. These run under OS X, I am not aware of any solutions under Windows through Parallels (however, since in that case OS X is still running, they would work as intended).
Note that running lid-closed can potentially lead to heat issues, since air for cooling is drawn in through the keyboard.
Hope this helps...

  • MacBook Pro overheating when I close the screen

I have a Macbook Pro one year from now.
I used it without problems until a couple of weeks that when I closed the screen (not shut down) and I plugged to electricity, the mbp becomes extremely hot.
Any suggestions how to solve the issue?
    Thanks.

OK. Open Activity Monitor and select "All Processes" at the top and "CPU" on the bottom bar. Then look through the CPU column and see if you can find some process--perhaps a hung up printer process--using more than 50%--maybe even 100%--of the CPU. These hung up processes, if you have one, can generate a lot of heat.
Also, run the extended version of the Apple Hardware test, just to be sure that the fans and the thermal sensors are functioning properly. If you get any error codes, please post back with them.
    Good luck!

  • Bue tooth is dead, and computer does not sleep when i close the screen now.

    OK
This is a on going issue:
1-I paid for apple care 4 days prior to the expiration of my one year agreement with purchase, they shipped it a day after it expired of course, and at first it rejected my serial number saying it was beyond the date,
2-i contacted Apple, they fixed this and after calling them again they repeated the same thing, i can not down load techtool deluxe.
3-However, i used iMac apple care kit to download the latest Techtool deluxe only to find out it is not Leopard Compatible,
Apple did it again with a new OS, releasing it with no coverage leaving us all sitting around like PC geeks !
Now after several incidents with blue-tooth on the phone with tech support, like been told i have to pay money if its the OS doing this instead of the hardware itself, i am a bit fed up here., blue-tooth is dead and my macbook does not sleep, i can even see iChat still on while the screen is closed!
I no longer have confidence i the idea of going back to Tiger on this computer will fix a bad logic board as i read others with the similar BT problem.
Can anyone advise what to do next please?

used original dvds and found BT, LEOPARD bugs caused the BT problems.

  • Firefox 6.02 will not save my privacy settings (Use Custom Settings) when I close the window

I am trying to set up my preferences in Google and it tells me that my cookies are not enabled. I open the Firefox 6 Preferences / Privacy window and select the Custom Settings option, to enable third party cookies. When I close the screen the setting is not saved. I am using Firefox 6.02 with Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.

I took the check mark out of the "Remember Download History" box and closed the screen. It saved the privacy settings.

Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Displays.
System Preferences can also be found in the Hard drive -> Applications folder.

This only started happening after I upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10, I don't have a clue why it does it, but if I close the screen on my laptop and open it, the screen doesn't come back on it just stays off but the power light button comes on and the WiFi signal button is on but it is red as if the wifi is turned off, is anyone else having this problem or does anyone know how to fix it? I have to manually hold down the power button everytime I close my laptop to turn it off and then back on and once it is on it works perfectly, but I don't like holding the power button down for obvious reasons. Thank you.Go back to Windows 10, seems HP do not care about releasing up to date drivers for Windows 10, this is despite the problem you report also happening during BETA Testing of Windows 10 over TWELVE MONTHS AGO! It is only now HP are bothering to advise people not to upgrade, but yet they clearly won't reply in this topic, which is more or less about your problem from many different users! http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-Systems-and-Software/Windows-10-Laptop-won-t-go-into-sleep-mode/m-p/5181173#M304826

  • After my Macbook has been on for a little, the light goes out on the screen. When I start to close the screen the light comes back on. I can hold it in this position and keep typing/reading indefinitely.any idea what is the problem?

After my Macbook has  been in  use  for a little while, the light goes off on the screen as if the computer is off.  Then, as I start to close the screen, it comes back on fully.  If I push it back open it cuts off again.  So, I just leave it part way open and turn the laptop at an angle so that I can continue to see the screen & type.  It acts like there is a short.  Any idea what the problem is?

It does sound like you might have a faulty video connection. See if you can make a Genius Bar appointment at your local Apple Store.

  • Downloaded upgrade to Google Earth and when I attempt to open, all I get is the "Start-Up Tip".  With previous version, I the earth would come up in background.  Now only the tip.  When I close the tip screen, nothing.?

Had Goggle Earth (GE) on the Mac since new last year.  Worked fine.  Tried upgrading GE this week and only the tip window opens.  Before, the earth would be in the background and the tip in the foreground.  Now, only the tip.  When I close the tip, nothing.  No earth, no GE but the Mac says the GE is running.  Any idea what is going wrong?

  • I've connected my macbook pro (os 10.6.8) to an external display, but it will not go into clam shell mode!  When I close the lid the laptop goes to sleep, and I am unable to wake it using the external keyboard or mouse.

A rundown of what I've tried:
Adjusting energy settings to try to prevent sleep
Pluging the USB keyboard and wacom tablet directly into the laptop (as opposed to a usb hub)
My laptop's power cable is connected
My display (a Vizio TV) is recognized in the System Preferences panel
I'd been using this TV for about a year with my older Macbook Pro (OS 10.5.8), though using a different wireless keyboard and mouse
***Update:  The issue seems to lie with the keyboard and wacom tablet.  I am trying to use a wireless Case Logic keyboard (with dongal) and wired wacom tablet to wake the Macbook Pro in clamshell mode.  To experiment, I tried using my Logitech wireless keyboard & mouse set (also dongal) that I had been using before and it wakes the computer without any problems!  However, I really need to be able to use my wacom tablet.  If I switch to the tablet after waking the computer using the Logitech keyboard & mouse it works, but once the computer sleeps it won't work anymore.  I could keep switching back and forth I suppose, but it's sort of a pain.  There has to be an easier way!  Any ideas why the wired wacom tablet is unable to wake the computer in clamshell mode?
    Thanks!

So your keyboard or mouse won't wake the Mac when you close the lid correct? Try resetting the SMC and pram
    Shut down the computer.
Disconnect the MagSafe power adapter from the computer, if it's connected.
    Remove the battery.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
Reconnect the battery and MagSafe power adapter.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

    18. What is the maximum resolution available for use with the Apple Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter?
The resolution available with the Apple Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter is 1920 x 1200. VGA displays that use higher refresh rates (such as 85 Hz) at resolutions of 1600 x 1200 or greater may not generate video properly until you lower the refresh rate.

    How can I detect displays?
If the detect displays option is not available, hold down the Option key while you are in the Display pane.
How do I select additional resolutions on my display?
You can use the Display pane of System Preferences to specify how your display works. Not all options appear for all display models. By default the best resolution for your display will already be selected in System Preferences.
To select a different resolution, use the Scaled option. Some additional resolutions may be available when you hold the Option button.

  • When I close the lid to my Macbook Pro, it won't stay awake.

I am trying to hook up a SAMSUNG SyncMaster B2330 monitor to my MacBook Pro so that I can close the lid and work with my wireless mouse and keyboard instead of the laptop screen.  I have limited desk space and I dont have room to have two monitors open.
When I close the lid and wiggle the mouse, my computer wakes up for a second, but then quickly goes back to sleep. I am not currently plugged into power, but I am running on battery.
