When I connect my camera to my iPad I get a requires too much power error message

I keep getting a "usb device requires too much power" error when I connect my external camera to my iPad.

Doing a search on here it looks like other people have the same problem with Sony cybershot cameras. If you have a card reader which doesn't draw too much power then you could try using that with the USB part of the kit.

You can transfer photos outside of iTunes. I do it all the time. THat said, i have a 50/50 success rate with them. I'd avoid sandisk and kingston, their bundled software triggers the 'too much power' warning.
I've had mixed luck with lexar, some work, some don't.
I did have good luck with an older 4 gig geek squad one.
Look for drives without software on them, without bright LED lights and I haven't gotten any larger than 4 gig to work, but that may just be me.
For a less troublesome way? h onestly, I use a SD card that I've formatted with the DCIM folder. I've never had one of them trigger the 'too much power' warning. Just make sure they're not SDXC. those don't work.

  • Is there an App in App Store to solve  "Cannot Use Device - 'The connected USB device requires too much power' error

I'm not an app developer, but I'm wondering if there is an app that enable's USB devices connected via the camera USB and using the most current iOS 5.0 to use USB devices that draw on the iPad's power. I'm making reference to some USB microphones such as Blue Yeti that have suggested that to get a Blue Yeti working one hasto downgrade to iOS 3.2.2?
I'm thinking, can Apple or someone make this app so the user may think, "okay I want more power now to record something", and the user can turn up the power and when they've done recording, go to the app, turn down the power when the USB device is not in use [by turning down the power via the app].
Of course with the App, Apple or the developer may state that using the USB Charge Changer radically reduces the charge of the device. It'll keep a LOT of musicians and creative types very happy. I hope with Apple's blessing they'll consider this.
Hey, I'll pay 5 bucks to get this app!

No, third-party apps cannot change the power drawn by USB devices. Such a change would have to come from Apple in an IOS update.
Send feedback directly to Apple about this here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html

Some cameras are designed to use the power suppled via USB when they're plugged into another device, usually a PC or laptop. The iPad does not supply sufficient power for a camera. The iPad Camera kit allows for either a camera to be plugged in only for the transfer of photos, not as a power sourse, or the removal of the SD Card from a camera so it can transfer photos as an alternative.

  • IPad Air - The connected device requires too much power.

When connecting my iDJ Live II to my new iPad Air  I receive the following message:
    Cannot Use Device
Numark iDJ Live II: The connected device requires too much power.
The iPad Air is running iOS 7.0.4, I also have an iPhone 5S, iPad Mini and iPad 2 all running latest iOS 7.0.4 and this dj controller runs on all these models. I know about the 20mA output limit on these other devices but they all still work why not the iPad Air? What has changed?
I am very disappointed with this restriction as the only reason I bought the iPad Air was for the better processing power and 128gb storage to fit all my music on there to use this dj controller with djay 2 and vjay. Now I have spent $900 on something I can not use as intended.
Please any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Adam

Try giving your iPad a reset. See if it can clear up the error or if it repeats. Hold down the sleep and home keys until it reboots then try again.
How does this device plug in? Via the lightning connector or the USB part of the camera kit? If it's USB then sometimes a powered USB hub can help with the power issues.
If it's lightning then the issue could be related to something that came with iOS7. Due to so many unauthorized lightning cables, iOS7 activated software that looks for a code broadcast by the chip in the lightning connector. Authorized manufacturers have codes that the software sees, unauthorized ones don't. Usually people using unauthorized cables get a specific message, however it could be possible that this new part of the software is affecting other things connected to the lightning port.
Have you looked on djay's site to see if others are having issues or if they have fixes?

  • HT4106 How do I use a midi keyboard on GarageBand with my iPad? When I try it says the device cannot be used as it requires too much power.  However, I have given the midi it's own power source.

How do I use a midi keyboard as an input device on garageband? Its an oxygen 61 board.  I'm using an iPad camera connection kit and a separate power source for the midi but each time it says it cannot use the midi as it requires too much power.

I have the same problem with my iPad and 61. Sometimes it says device not supported and sometimes it rants about power - any solutions anyone ?

  • I want to download pictures from a Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo to my iPad 4. There is no cord for the camera and the USB dongle requires too much power through the camera connector kit. Any good solutions?

I want to download pictures to my iPad 4 from a memory stick pro duo. There are no cord connections for the camera and the USB dongle requires too much power through the camera connection kit. Any good solutions?

Another way. You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive (works the same with an SD card) into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)

  • IPad mini retina - The connected device requires too much power.

    Hi,
I just bought the IDJ Live 2 Controller on 6 march 2014.
when I connect the lightning cable to the ipad and idj live 2, it shows me an error.
Unable to use the device: The connected device requires too much power.
i use the original cable from numark idj, my configuration is:
ipad mini retina ios 7.0.6 - idj live 2.
I tried with iPhone 4, it works well. (same ios)
I also have a sd card lighting adapter and it works on the iPad mini retina.
Currently it is not possible to power the lightining cable..
maybe in future, will Apple increase the output current through new ios?

No, because the other end of the lighining cable has a mini usb (type b) connector.

  • HT4101 It says it requires too much power when i connect my usb??

It says it requires too much power when i connect my usb??

Ok. Many USB's trigger the too much power warning. If you have a memory card, try doing it that way. Or you can experiment with other USB sticks. I've literally had a 50/50 success rate with the ones I've tried. You can try another one. Off brands seem to work better, along with smaller ones. The largest I've had work was a 4 gig. Kingston and Sandisk often trigger the too much power warning.
Do you know the naming format to make it work? Have a folder named DCIM in the upper level and make sure that all the photos have a name of exactly 8 characters.

This is the message I get when connecting a camera on binoculars to ipad.  Is there a work around the camera will also load to a SD card

    There are a few options:
    1. If your camera supports it, you can try a low power mode, or picture transfer mode so it does not attempt to charge from the iPad. some cameras have this.
    2. You can add a powered USB hub between the iPad and the camera, so the camera uses the usb hub's power instead of trying to charge from the iPad.
    3. You can get the SD card reader and read the photos direcltly off of the card instead of through the camera.

  • HT4101 What does it mean when it says that the USB device requires too much power?

What does it mean when it says that the USB device requires too much power, when using the ipad lightening pin camera connection kit?

Just that. The iPad allocates a certain amount of power to that port. If the device you're trying to plug in wants more than the iPad is willing to give, it'll trigger that warning.
If it's something that you just must hook up you can try using a powered USB hub, but results are mixed at best.
What are you trying to hook to your iPad?
