When I create an album in iphoto am I duplicating pictures or just creating links?

When I create an album in iphoto am I duplicating pictures or just creating links?  My iphoto is slow and I'm wondering if I am bogging it down. Thanks.

How many Photos? How much Ram? What Mac? How muc free space on the Disk? And, how slow is "slow to start up"?
Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.

  • When I share an album from iPhoto on iCloud and invite friends, can those with a pc view them?

When I share an album from iPhoto on iCloud and invite friends, can those with a pc view them?

That depends, see this link:   iCloud: iCloud Photo Sharing FAQ
iCloud Photo Sharing adds new features to shared photo streams, including the ability to share videos and allow subscribers to contribute to your shared streams. These new features work with the following devices and software:
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch using iOS 7
Mac using OS X Mavericks v10.9 or later and either iPhoto 9.5 or Aperture 3.5
Apple TV with Apple TV software 6.0 or later
Windows PC using Windows 7 or later and iCloud Control Panel 3.1 or later
If you're using earlier versions of iOS, iCloud Control Panel, iPhoto, or Aperture, you can still create and view shared photo streams. Learn more.
If all fails, you can publish the shared photo stream as a webpage and mail  the links to your friends with a PC.
Can I share with people who don't use iCloud?
Yes. If you enable Public Website in the settings for your shared stream, your photos will be published to a website that anyone can view in an up-to-date web browser. Learn more about inviting people to view your shared photo streams.

  • TS2972 When playing a photo album from iPhoto on Appletv it will not play the videos

When playing a photo album from Macbook Pro on Apple tv the videos in the album won't play.  Is this fixed in settings?

I don't believe that is possible. It may be best to have those videos stored in iTunes if you wish to home-share/airplay them.

  • IPhoto folders and duplicated pictures

I've just swith to Mac, and I love it. Importing my pictures from my pc was easy, however somehow I ended up with the following folders under iPhoto Library:
    -Data
    -Modified
    -Originals
Can someone explain to me how were these folders created?
Aditionally, when I spotligth a picture it appears on two locations (generally under Originals and Data folders, or Originals and modified) Do I have duplicated pictures? How can I look for duplicated pictures?
    Many thanks
    Pedro

    vote_4pedro:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Those three folders are created by iPhoto automatically to hold the following:
Data - thumbnail files for each file imported into iPhoto and viewed in the thumbnail mode up to a certain size, after which the original file is used. This speeds up launching of iPhoto as it does not have to read and render the full sized image files.
Modified - every time you do an edit iPhoto creates this modified file and applies the edit to that file. This allows you to revert to original any time you need the original file.
Originals - these the the files that get imported into iPhoto.
Having these different folders and files is how iPhoto operates and they should not be tampered with from the Finder: Don't tamper with files in the iPhoto Library folder from the Finder. To do so will damage the library and render it unusable for the most part.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

  • Does it support transparency when you want print album on iphoto 11

i want to try to print an illustrator draw that  i made on an album and on cards  but i am worried to loose the transparacy and have a black background does anyone have tryed this kind of thing ? does it support transpiracy for printing apple card and album

    Did you Preview it?
To make a PDF file using the background shortcut menu:
Open the book project, open the card project, or open the calendar project.
Press the Control key while you click in the background of your project.
    Do one of the following:
Choose “Save Book as PDF,” “Save Card as PDF,” or “Save Calendar as PFD” from the shortcut menu. In the window that appears, enter a name for the PDF file, enter a location to save the file to, and then click the Save button.
Choose Preview Book, Preview Card, or Preview Calendar from the shortcut menu. The Preview application opens and shows a PDF file of your project. You can save it just as you would any other document.

  • Organise photos within Album in iPhoto on iPad

Yesterday I purchased the iPhoto app for my iPad, this is due to someone recommending it to me as an easy option of presenting artwork as a portfolio. I have a batch of JPEGs in an album that I want to display in a certain order, so I named them for example 'iPad app_p01' 'iPad app_p02' and so on. But when I synced the album into iPhoto on the iPad the photos are in a random order and the only option I have is to view them by newest or oldest, no option for by name.
Please can someone help me, this seems like a really obvious option to include in a photo app.
Any help would be much appreciated.

The iPad only sorts by date, and the date is the "date modified", so if you change the version name, you are modifying the date.
I have not tried it myself, but this post looks promising:   Re: How do I sort events in iPhoto for iOS?

  • How come my albums in iPhoto don't sync with iPhone?

    Hi
Something very frustrating I've been dealing with for a while now is photo albums.
How come when I make an album in iPhoto, I cant have it on my iPhone; and when I make an album on my iPhone I can't have it on my iPhoto???
This doesn't make any sense to me. Does anyone know if I'm missing something, or is this really the nature of these devices?
Its such a waste of time for me.

What system do you have on your Mac?  To share photos in Photo Stream the Mac must be running 10.7.5 or newer and iPhoto 9 or later while the phone must be running iOS 7.  For Shared Photo Streams the Mac must be running 10.8.2 or later.  Do your devices meet those requirements?

  • Some albums don't appear in finder (Pictures)

For some reason not all of my albums from iphoto appear in my "Pictures" folder in the finder. About 3/4 do, but not all. I have made sure that I haven't used any odd characters, etc. Is there a way to ensure they appear. That seems to be the best way to get the photos into other applications.
Also, my "photos" folder under "pictures" in the finder will not open to show all of my photos. When I double click on it, iphoto opens. Is that standard?
    thank you,

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
    1. What version of iPhoto are you using? (iPhoto Menu -> About iPhoto). I ask as you're posting in the v7 (iPhoto 08 forum) and in this (or indeed v6 or v5) no albums appear in the Finder at all.
There is no way to make you albums "appear" in the Finder. Albums are virtual entities, there is no corresponding folder of images. An Album is an entry in the database.
That seems to be the best way to get the photos into other applications.
Not at all. Never access you photos via the Finder. Doing so risks damaging your Library.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto. With 10.5 you can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
All of the above are faster and safer than rooting through the folders of the Library.
lso, my "photos" folder under "pictures" in the finder will not open to show all of my photos. When I double click on it, iphoto opens. Is that standard?
Yes. With iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder is now a Unix Style Package File. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.

  • HT204364 I'm creating a 'book' from an album in iPhoto.  I have downloaded the latest version.  However, I have selected a certain book i.e. wire bound, 19 page and when I'm creating it, it indicates 33 pages for one, and 42 pages for another.  How can I

I'm creating a book from an album in iPhoto.  I have downloaded the latest version of iPhoto.  When I choose a book, i.e. wirebound, 19-20 page book, it shows a 42 page book when I am populating the pictures in the book I've selected.  Is that because I have more pictures in the album?
In any case, I can't seem to manipulate/choose the number of pages I want.  How can I stick with the 20 page book I want?
    Thanks.

You can not select the "number of pages" - you select the photos and the page layours and the number of pages comes form that - with Autoflow iPhoto uses random page layouts so the number of pages is rando=m
You can change layouts to include more photos, move photos to the pages with no empty photos frames and then delete the pages at the end after the photos are used elsewhere

  • When I create a new photo album in Iphoto it adds all my photos in the library

I love my macbook pro but still not fully understanding Iphoto.  When I create a new photo album and drag photos over from a disk it seems to add all photos from my library. When I remove them it removes them from all the albums.  HELP!

Add the photos from your disc to iPhoto, then drag them from the iPhoto Event or photos to the Album.
You can delete photos from the Album without removing them from the computer.  If you delete them in the Photos or Events area, they are removed from iPhoto, therefore taking them out of the Album.
The photos have to be in iPhoto to exist in an Album.  They cannot exist in an Album and not be in iPhoto..
    Hope that helps...

  • I created an album in iPhoto 11 and I have placed photos in a certain order for her graduation party slideshow. I want to place that album or photos on a thumbdrive, but when I do I lose the order I placed them in the folder.

I created an album in iPhoto 11 and I have placed photos in a certain order for her graduation party slideshow. I want to place that album or photos on a thumbdrive, but when I do I lose the order I placed them in the folder.  renamed the photos starting with 1 and ending 262. thinking that would save the photos in order. Each time I try to export them that are placed in original folder names and descriptions need help.

This is a two part process. First we title the photos, then we export them, using the title as filename.
    To title them
Once you have then in the order you want select them all and go
Photos -> Batch Change. Select set 'Title' to 'Text'
Choose a Title -> Graduation 2013 or whatever, then check the box at 'Append number to each photo.
Now, in the Album all your photos are named... Graduation 001, 002, 003 etc
    Next Export them:
File -> Export, and in the Name option, choose 'Title as Filename' and complete the export.

  • How significant is the yellow hazard warning for pictures when creating an album using IPhoto?

How significant is the yellow hazard warning message for pictures when creating an album using IPhoto?

Are you talking about making a Book?
How siginificant depends on how low resolution the photo is and how sensative you are to poor prints - it displays when a -photo will print below 180 dpi - what is the DPI of the photos that is givingyou the warning (the photo size divided byt the pixel size)

  • When I create an album and then try to watch it in slideshow, I get only a black screen with a white title.  No photos come up.  Also when I click on an individual photo in the album, I get a white exclamation point on a black background but no big photo.

When I create an album of photos and then open the album and try to watch it by selecting "slideshow" I get only a black screen.  The white title comes up briefly but then no photos, only a black screen.  Also when I go back to the album and click on a thumbnail, up comes a big white exclamation point on a black background instead of the enlarged photo.  Any idea what's going on?

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • I created an album in iPhoto and every time I click on slideshow it plays the pictures backwards from the order in the album. How do I change that?

I created an album in iPhoto and every time I click on slideshow it plays the pictures backwards from the order in the album. How do I change that?

When running a slideshow from an album it will not run properly if the photos are sorted manually.  Sort them by any of the other options, title, date, rating, etc. and it will play correctly.
Send a report of the problem to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html.
If you must sort them manually create the slideshow in the slideshow mode in iPhoto, not from an album.
