When i download a movie i want it to go straight to external hard drive how do i do this

I own a mac air 17" and i like to keep the memory as free as possible.  I would like to know if i can have my external hard drive plugged in and download my itunes (TV shows & Movies) purchases direct to it.
I hvae tried moving media files etc but i just can't work out how to keep it working HELP!!!

Move the entire iTunes library there, launch iTunes with the Option key held down, and point it to that instance of the library.

Do you mean you want to continue editing it with the media transferred to an external drive?  Which version of iMovie are you using?
    With iMovie 10 see: http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.0/#mov3fa25bae7

  • I have Mountain Lion OS Install CD downloaded onto my external hard drive, how do I use this to upgrade from Leopard

Current computer that I just bought used is operating on Leopard 10.5.8
I have Mountain Lion OS X CD installation files downloaded on my external hard drive from another Mac that I have owned.
How do I use my external HD to download and Install Mountain OS X wizard.
Is the only way to do this to buy a copy of snow leopard and then once upgrading to that, plug in my external HD and then access the Mtn install file as I would if I had the installation CD?
When I try to access the install file from my external HD, i get to the installation window and then when I am to select a hard drive to install it on I receuve a red exclamation mark error that says it can not be written to the HD. Why is this? Because I'm not on snow leopard but rather leopard?

As you have the installer on a DVD, you can do a trick that consists in formatting the hard drive, and then, install Mountain Lion.
First, make a backup of your files with Time Machine > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427 I recommend Time Machine because it will be easier to restore your files later.
Then, insert the DVD with Mountain Lion and hold the C key while your Mac is starting, so you will see a window with different options. Open Disk Utility, choose Macintosh HD in the sidebar, go to Erase tab and erase the drive.
After erasing the drive, you can install Mountain Lion. Close Disk Utility and install it. During the initial setup, it will ask you to restore your files, so plug the external drive with the backup and follow its steps. Note that PowerPC apps aren't compatible

  • My start up disk is full I want to transfer files to my external hard drive how do I do that

Mac Book Air start up disk is full
I moved my iTunes to an external drive
    But this keeps happening
    Any ideas?

time machine or keep your collection of large media files on an external HD
    To show HD on desktop
go into FINDER at top then PREFERENCES  then GENERAL tab
then check "hard disks" and "external disks"
You already moved your music to your ext. HD,  why are you having any issues to transfer anything else?
check your SSD contents in your Air

  • When I plug in my ipad it automatically tries to back up and download all the contents to the C drive - the PC is too full and I have iTunes on an external hard drive, how do I tell the system to do the backup to the hard drive please?

When I plug in my ipad it automatically tires to back up and download all the contents to the C drive - the PC is too full and I have iTunes on an external hard drive, how do I tell the system to do the backup to the hard drive please?

You can open a command prompt by hitting the start button and typing CMD<Enter> in the search box that opens up.
To move the current backup folder from C: to D: type in this command and press <Enter>
    Move "C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup" "D:\Backup"
Where <User> is your Windows user name.
To make iTunes look for the data in the new location type in this command and press <Enter>
    MkLink /J "C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup" "D:\Backup"
If your external drive has a different letter or you already have a folder called "Backup" then edit "D:\Backup" accordingly in both commands.

  • When I download a CD to iTunes, some CD's appear as separate albums. How can I correct this?

When I download a CD to iTunes, some CD's appear as separate albums. How can I correct this?
for some reason iTunes appears to believe some tracts are from a separate album. For instance, one recently released Rod Stewart CD HAS 8 tracts on one album and the remaining two tracts on two separate albums, all albums are called the correct album name?

If your CD has tracks with different artists, or if there are differences in how the artist field is filled in for the different tracks, then you can fix this by identifying the disc as a 'compilation' CD.
Select all of the tracks in the CD, then 'get info' (control-I), and go to 'Options'. Select 'yes' for 'Part of a compilation'. That should fix the problem.

  • I want to change screenshot location from my Solid State hard drive with OSX on it, to my 2nd storage hard drive, how do I do this?

I want to change screenshot location from my Solid State hard drive with OSX on it, to my 2nd storage hard drive, how do I do this?
I am aware of "defaults write com.apple.screencapture *location*" but I want to change the location to my 2nd drive which doesn't have OSX on it... everytime I've tried to insert MacintoshHD2 in there it just doesn't work... any tips?

I'm having the same problem.  I've entered the following path in terminal:
    "defaults write.com.apple.screencapture location /Volumes/Macintosh HD 2/[my username]/Downloads"
But it's not working.  It keeps going to the SSD Downloads folder.
    What am I doing wrong?

Ensure that the external is correctly formatted
    Drag and dropped the files
Test to be sure that the moved files work
Once the moved files work delete the originals

When ever the power goes out or I restart my iMac the external hard drive that is used for backups by Time Machine is dismounted and all backups are gone. I can reselect it and it will start working again, but I am worried if the iMac hard drive should fail will I be left without a backup ?

"Mac OS X can't repair the disk.  You can still open or copy files on the disk, but you can't save changes to files on the disk.  Back up the disk and reformat it as soon as you can."
It's possible a heavy-duty 3rd-party disk repair app can fix it, but they're expensive (DiskWarrior is about $100), and there's no guarantee it can do it.
Am prompted to reformat but I don't have a good understanding of what this means and how to do it.
That will erase it.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #5.
It sounds very much like the disk is beginning to fail, although it's possible there's a bad port, cable, connection or power supply (if it has its own).
I'd suggest getting a new one, and using it for your Time Machine backups; once you have a good backup there, reformat the old one (and select Security Options to write zeros to the whole drive -- if that fails, you know the drive is toast).  Use it for secondary backups, per FAQ #27.   If it has failed, get a second new one for secondary backups.

You did something wrong. Why was your usb hard drive connected? Did you somehow format the external hard drive? If so, your files are gone.
