When I drag a link into a neighboring tab, how do I prevent Firefox from moving me into the new url?

When I drag a link from tab #1 into tab #2, (Firefox 3.6.6) my browser window automatically shifts to tab #2. I've noticed that dragging into the lower portion of neighboring tabs is supposed to prevent this, but it's hit-or-miss. How do I kill this "feature" so that I can simply drag and drop while staying on the original page?
== This happened ==
Every time Firefox opened
== Several versions ago.

No, you can't avoid that.
The purpose is that you can drag text or a link from one tab to a text area in another tab and to achieve that the tab must be opened and focused.

How do I prevent itunes from moving my music from its original place ie folders in an external drive when I play music from itunes. I have all my music in artist folders and separated by MPG3/MPG4 and FLAC folders within the artist folder and itunes moves the track/s whenever i try and load selected music to my ipod/iphone. I've tried to find some sort of preference to prevent this, but no joy? What am I missing?

Try opening iTunes preferences. Then click on advanced tab. Then uncheck "Copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to library." By default, iTunes copies music to its own media folder when you use iTunes to play the music.

  • How do I prevent Firefox from automatically placing me in the tab that is created when I click on a link?

For example, sometimes I want to open all the links in a "Google Alerts" email in new tabs BEFORE I look at any of them. By default, I have to keep clicking back to the original email after I click each URL. I want to be able to open multiple links in new tabs without being automatically placed into each tab after every click. I know I can right click and say "open in new tab" but I want to just be able to click on the link.

Are that regular links or are they handled by JavaScript ?
There are three prefs, accessible via the about:config page, to control the focus if you click a link.
*browser.tabs.loadInBackground (normal links; also Via Options > Tabs)
    *browser.tabs.loadDivertedInBackground (javascript)
    *browser.tabs.loadBookmarksInBackground (bookmarks and searchbar)

  • How do I prevent Firefox from automatically starting when I boot-up my Mac in the morning?

Whenever I boot up my Mac in the morning Firefox automatically starts and displays my home page. I would only like to see the desk top with no applications running. I am running OSX 10.4.11 on my laptop.
== Started possibly a few weeks ago.

Hmm.. Okay I've done a bit more digging and tried the following two things before the last restart.. Not sure which one actually worked but give these a shot (one at a time) and let us know which is the ''actual'' solution! :)
    1. Open Safari -> Preferences -> General
    - change "Default Web Browser" to Safari
    - Close all applications
    - Relaunch Safari and change default browser back to Firefox.
    2. Remove the check from "Reopen windows when logging in" in the logout dialog and logout of the computer..
I suspect step 2 is actually the proper solution, but I did both so, hopefully one of them works for everyone else!

  • Extra monitor w/laptop in office, when out of office how do I prevent Firefox from displaying on the non-existant 2nd screen?

When I am out of my office using my laptop, upon launching Firefox, it displays all of the tabs from the previous session on the non-existent extra monitor which is set up as a screen extention for when I am in my office. All of the other programs that I park on the extra monitor (Outlook for example) display on the laptop's screen when the extra monitor is not attached. Is this a bug? Or, must I not save my open tabs when exiting Firefox if I am going to use the laptop w/o the monitor?

Thanks for your suggestion. I sort of came to that conclusion as I was typing the original question. However if there is anyone out there who has a solution that is not dependent on my remembering to do something before I exit Firefox, it will be welcomed.

  • How can I prevent Firefox from opening a second instance of Excel when I click on a web link to a .csv file?

I can't find anything about this online

The CSV files are send as Content-Type: text/comma-separated-values
Do you mean that you also see the file in a Firefox tab or do you get two Excel instances?
You can try to rename (or delete) the mimeTypes.rdf file in the Firefox profile folder to reset all file actions.

You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:

  • How can I prevent Firefox from starting in Offline Mode when there is no internet connection?

    Hey!
When I fire up my laptop from standby it takes some time before the wireless internet connection is established. If i am too quick and open Firefox before that happens, it automatically goes into Offline Mode, which I hate a lot.
Is there any way to disable this behaviour?
I have already tried everything mentioned here: [http://superuser.com/questions/208146/can-firefoxs-offline-mode-be-disabled http://superuser.com/questions/208146/can-firefoxs-offline-mode-be-disabled]
Also I found this addon, which unfortunately does not work with Firefox 11: [https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/addon/disable-automatic-offline-mana/ https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/addon/disable-automatic-offline-mana/]

That shouldn't happen in Firefox 4 or later. You should just get a page not found or server not found message.
Can you check the following setting?
    (1) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
    (2) In the filter box, type or paste '''offline''' and pause while the list is filtered
    (3) Look for '''network.manage-offline-status''' and reset it to False (either double-click or right-click/reset).
    Does that work?

  • How can I prevent Firefox from closing when it crashes?

So, I'm using a Windows 8 computer, & when it crashes, it closes altogether & it's really annoying having to reload my session, but when I was using a Windows 7 computer, Firefox hardly ever closed altogether when it crashed- all it did was freeze. Is there some way to only have it freeze instead of closing altogether? I hope you understand what I'm saying. Thanks.

    If only, if only! :)
No, there isn't a way you can choose what Firefox does when it crashes. It crashes for a reason. But we can see what's causing those crashes.
Can you give me your crash reports?
#Enter ''about:crashes'' in the Firefox address bar and press Enter. A Submitted Crash Reports list will appear, similar to the one shown below.
#Copy the '''5''' most recent Report IDs that start with '''bp-''' and paste them into your response here.
Your System Details looks very light/empty. Can you start by giving us the troubleshooting information from the Firefox installation that's having problems. This is an essential step in troubleshooting.<br>
*Click the Firefox button at the top left, then click the ''Help'' menu and select ''Troubleshooting Information'' from the sub-menu. If you don't have a Firefox button, click the Help menu at the top and select ''Troubleshooting Information'' from the menu.
Now, a new tab containing your troubleshooting information should open.
*At the top of the page, you should see a button that says "Copy text to clipboard". Click it.
*Now, go back to your forum post and click inside the reply box. Press Ctrl+V to paste all the information you copied into the forum post.

  • Ps cs6 i can open photos in the same folder into layers panel, but how do you open photos from seperate folders into layer panel

what is the method of taking a single photo from 3 different folders and have them all open in the layers panel

Let get the term right.  Photoshop has a Layers Palette.  The Layers palette show the layers in the current active document your working on in Photoshop.  If you have more the one open document they will be in a Tabbed View or Floating Image Windows or Minimized.  The list of open documents is in Photoshop menu Windows at the bottom.  You can also open more then one image into a single document as a stack of layers and also place, paste and copy in image into a document  into a new layer.   The layers Palette shows the layers in the current document  the one your actively working on. The layers  changes as you  work on layers and the whole palette changes when you switch between open documents.

  • How can I prevent Firefox from opening the file I create when I print a page with PDF Create! 5

After I print a web page using PDF Create! 5, Firefox opens the file so i can view it. Before I print, I select print properties and disable "view resulting pdf". However, the file is always opened in Adobe Acrobat, although I believe I have Adobe Reader set as default. I do not want any file to open. This happens on my non-privileged accounts. On my privileged account, the file is not opened. I have removed Firefox profiles, re-installed Firefox, Reset Firefox in Help-Troubleshooting. PDF Create!5 print screen can only be viewed in a host program such as Firefox, Libre-office Writer, or any other program that prints. They do not open the file either.

Thanks for your help. This is the Scansoft (Nuance) program. What I do not understand is why when I tell the print driver not to open the file with a privileged account, it obeys me. I am not sure where in the registry I would look for the information. I do not want to, but perhaps I should remove the Adobe Acrobat program (temporarily?) - then what would it do? Again, when I print from other programs - browsers, wordprocessors, etc - the file is not opened after printing, just with FireFox. I guess I can live with it, I have spent too much time already.

  • How can I prevent Firefox from shutting down to 5% when inactive?

My computer (running Win8, FF 22.0, just installed) is set for maximum performance, which means it enters sleep mode only when I tell it to. But recently FF 21.0 and 22.0 has started shutting down to 5% of its normal operating memory use after as little as 60 seconds or so of inactivity. Then when I try to use it, it will SLOWLY reload, sometimes taking as long as 5 minutes or more! This is a relatively new behavior and a basically intolerable one. I cannot find any setting under Tools that addresses this, and the right click on the icon upper left now only deals with resizing. I do not want to go back to IE and have never liked Chrome at all, so I would hate to leave FF but I simply cannot continue to wait several minutes do do everything.

At: “https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Menu+bar+is+missing Hidden menu bar:” the following appears. This reference was given in an earlier post here. My comments are added below inside << … >>>.
"If you're using Windows 7 or Windows Vista, you now have an orange Firefox button that takes the most common functions and puts them in one menu." <<THIS CLEARLY SAYS “ORANGE BUTTON” AND THAT BUTTON SHOWS ON THE SCREEN SHOT, BUT THIS ORANGE BUTTON DOES NOT DO ANYTHING BUT OFFER “RESTORE, MINIMIZE, CLOSE”>>
"To temporarily show the old style menus, just press the Alt key. "<<THIS DOES NOT WORK AT ALL>>
"• To have them shown all the time, right-click on an empty section of the Tab Strip and check Menu Bar in the pop-up menu. "
<<WHEN THE MENU BAR IS REMOVED, THERE IS A FIREFOX DROPDOWN MENU – NB NOT A BUTTON IN ANY NORMAL SENSE OF THAT WORD—BUT THE INVENTORY OF FUNCTIONS IS QUITE DIFFERENT FROM THE MENU BAR’S INVENTORY AND THEREFORE NOT THE EQUIVALENT AT ALL.>>
<<IT MAY WELL BE THAT THE WRITERS HERE ARE USING “BUTTON” IN A SLOPPY, IMPRECISE WAY (RATHER, IN TWO QUITE DIFFERENT WAYS) AND THE ORANGE ”BUTTON” THEY ARE REFERRING TO IS SOMETIMES IN FACT THE DROPDOWN MENU TAB, AND NOT THE ORANGE BUTTON AT ALL, EVEN THOUGH THEY WRITE “ORANGE BUTTON” AND DISPLAY A SCREEN SHOT WITH AN ORANGE BUTTON. IN ANY CASE NOTHING IN THIS WHOLE MESS IS ACCURATELY DESCRIBED.>>

  • How can I prevent Firefox from cutting off the title of a webpage for use as a file name when printing/saving as PDF if there's a / in it?

Like it says in the question - when I try to print/save a webpage as a PDF, Firefox (version 36.0, Windows 8.1 64bit, German) usually uses the page's title as the file name. Slashes are, of course, not allowed in file names, but instead of just leaving leaving it out or replacing it with a hyphen, the title is cut off and everything before the last slash is gone, which in some cases results in very odd and misleading file names.
Is this a known bug? I couldn't find anything. So I'm just wondering if there's either going to be a fix anytime soon, or whether there is a simpler solution than to generate a different title sans slashes specifically for Firefox users.
Thanks in advance for Your help!

There is more than one proxy type.<br />
Only an anonymous proxy will hide the IP and build two connections, one between you and the proxy and a second connection between the proxy and the website that uses an IP from that proxy.<br />
A normal proxy merely passes all traffic without affecting it, so websites see your IP in such a case.

  • How do I prevent firefox from switching tab groups when closing a tab?

I really like the tab groups feature, as it helps cut down on the number of tabs I have open at once. The problem is that when I close a tab, I sometimes get shunted to another random tab group. It is then a pain to get back to where I was before. Is there a way to force Firefox to choose among the current tab group for a tab to open?

This problem persists in Firefox 5.0 on all of my computers (Windows 7, OS X 10.6, and *any* Linux distro). It would be nice if Firefox was forced to remain within a single tab group until no more tabs remain. Also, if we have pinned tabs, closing the last non-pinned tab should select the nearest pinned tab, without switching tab groups.
This issue is pretty annoying. It would be nice to see a remedy. For reference, here is another post with the same issue: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/828677

  • How do I prevent Firefox from installing a new version when I click on the "Check for New Version" button? And why does it even do this?

I check for updates manually and this is frustrating because I can't stop it once it starts. There is no "Cancel" button or anything that will stop the update.
"Check for updates" does not mean "Install updates"

OK, I guess that's what I'll do. Thanks.
I do have to say it is kind of ridiculous for them to remove the "There is an update. Do you want to install it?" that every other application uses. Even FF plug-ins use one. Checking for an update should not automatically install it.
That is bad enough, but removing the "Cancel" button during the update download is one for the ages. Whatever happened to "user-friendly"? I guess they know what we need better than we do.

  • How can I prevent Firefox from automatically filling in my passward in every site I visit? I have NO security now when others use computer.

Everytime anyone on this computer goes to my AOL or YAHOO email, Firefox automatically fills in my password and whoever is using my computer can read my email or check bank balances or anything else. I have just started using Firefox and now have NO security. Can anyone help me change the security settings?

Also, make sure you have a password on your user account - if you share a computer without separate Windows accounts, they have access to all your information regardless of whether you stay logged in or not, and regardless of whether passwords are saved or not. Make everyone else use the guest account or their own limited account.
