So this message appears mainly if I were changing web sites. Can't carry on until I have cleared everything from screen, gone on to my Thunderbird e-mail then Firefox will load again.I can then just carry on till next time.
Please look at [[Firefox is already running but is not responding]]
The initial problem is solved by killing any process firefox.exe, ( & maybe also plugincontainer.exe) Make sure you always close firefox by using the option Firefox Button -> Exit
You may need to investigate further and clear some of the duplicated files that may exist. -
I get this message when I click the icon on the desktop or open a webpage from O.E.
Make sure that you do not start Firefox with the -no-remote switch appended to the command line.

when I launch firefox get the following message "firefox is already running, but is not resonding. to open a new window, you must first close the existing firefox process, or restart your system" firefox not running and a restart doesn't solve the problem
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.

Uninstall your current Firefox version, if possible.
*Do NOT remove personal data when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because all profile folders will be removed and you will also lose your personal data like bookmarks and passwords from profiles of other Firefox versions.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
*It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.

As I stated above, I have to constantly restart my computer because I get a message stating firefox is already running.
Do you see a firefox.exe in the Task manager if you look there right after you get this error message?
You do not have to restart the computer, just kill that process.
This situation may occur if Firefox was not closed correctly or crashed. -
this has been happening since i updated i have windows 7 but firefox beta used to work just 3 days ago i had mcafee site advisor but i deleted it its not working every time i click on the icon it displays the above message
I discovered that when the "Firefox is already running . . . ." message pops up I can fix it by doing the following [note: I get the same message for the Thunderbird e-mail program too] : 1. I open 'TASK MANAGER" and click on the "Processes" tab. 2. Next I scroll down until I see Firefox.exe *32 in the leftmost column (or Thunderbird. exe *32 if the message came up there), highlight that line by clicking on it and then click on the "end process" button on the right side on the bottom. 4. A pop-up window will come up but ignore its message and click on the "end process" button in the pop-up window. The program should then start the next time you click on the icon..
While that saves the need to restart your PC to fix the problem, I have yet to find any information as to the reasons for those two processes to show up in the first place. I'm running the 64 bit Win 7 Professional and do not know if that has something to do with those two processes running from time to time or not. The message comes up often but not all the time and I haven't been able to pinpoint any action on my part where the message comes up if I do '''X '''or the message never comes up when I do '''Y''' before closing Firefox or Thunderbird. -
Question
why does Firefox give this message when I do not have another program running or another window open - "Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system." editSee also "Hang at exit":

Firefox will just stop loading/ connecting to the internet. The gray circle will just continually move but it never turns green to load the pages. I know it's not my internet because my internet explorer works just fine while this is happening to firefox. So I close firefox and then try to re open it but I get the message: Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system. So I wait a little bit then try and re open it and still get the same message. I then go into my windows task manager and try and end the firefox proccess but it won't end. So I restart my computer and firefox eventually starts acting up again.
For possible causes of this error, and how to troubleshoot it see [[Firefox is already running but is not responding]].

I closed a Firefox process. Then clicked the FF icon to restart my browser. I received an error message. " Firefox is already running, but not responding. To open a new window you must first close existing Firefox process, or restart your system. However there is no Firefox process running to begin with. I checked the task manager.

Every time Firefox openedIt takes Firefox 5-15 seconds to completely close and for the OS to release the processes; it may take longer if you have a Flash animation/video running in one of the tabs. If not waiting long enough is not the problem, you can try the following to determine if an Extension or Plugin might be causing Firefox to hang at exit.
<u>'''Kill Application'''</u>
In Task Manager, does firefox.exe show in the <u>'''Processes'''</u> tab?

<u>'''Safe Mode'''</u>
You may need to use '''[[Safe Mode]]''' (click on "Safe Mode" and read) to localize the problem. Firefox Safe Mode is a diagnostic mode that disables Extensions and some other features of Firefox. If you are using a theme, switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes <u>'''before'''</u> starting Safe Mode. When entering Safe Mode, do not check any items on the entry window, just click "Continue in Safe Mode". Test to see if the problem you are experiencing is corrected.
See:
'''[[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]]'''
'''[[Troubleshooting plugins]]'''
'''[[Basic Troubleshooting]]'''
If the problem does not occur in Safe-mode then disable all of your Extensions and Plug-ins and then try to find which is causing it by enabling <u>'''one at a time'''</u> until the problem reappears. <u>'''You MUST close and restart Firefox after EACH change'''</u> via File > Restart Firefox (on Mac: Firefox > Quit). You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the Safe mode start window. -
I get this when I try to open a session....Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system. The task manager shows no open Firefox processes.I had two users on this laptop running Firefox and I tried deleting the program on both users. I then downloaded the newest version, installed it and I still get the error message as before. HELP!!!! I loved the browser program when it was working before and would rather use it than other browsers.
