When i exit one program firefox closes all programs

why does firefox close all tabs when I exit one tab?
This happened
Every time Firefox opened
== when i switchef from IE to firefox

I don't use keystrokes or "hot keys" to open or close windows, I use the mouse to close individual windows by clicking the red "X" on the window I desire to close. I do not use tabs either. The problem just began occurring, and I have been using this version for a long while and prefer it over the newer releases, however have not had this problem before. The method I am using to close windows is also what I have been doing for years and is not unusual.
What is unusual is that all open browser windows should not close when I close just one. I am trying to determine whether or not this is a Firefox problem or a Windows 7 problem. I suspect the latter, but decided to check for answers here in case someone else is having the problem and has a solution for it. Thanks in advance if anyone has a solution.

• My question is why does firefox close when I click another window off? I have a new window come up so I have two, but when I click one off it closes all of them.

I usually have more than one tabs up and ready when I'm searching the web. But when I look at my mail or when a new window is opened if I click the "X" all of my windows are closed. What could be the problem?

This is not a cure but will make it easier if Firefox locks up.

From what I have been reading from other posts on this forum, the
issue may be caused by the clear history settings. It was suppose
to have been fixed in v30.
Press the Alt or F10 key to bring up the tool bar.
Followed by;
Windows; Tools > Options
Linux; Edit > Preferences
Mac; application name > Preferences
Then Privacy.
The button next to History, select Use Custom Settings.
At the bottom of the page, turn on Clear History When Firefox Closes.
At the far right, press the Settings button. Turn on ONLY Cache and
Form And Search History leaving the others off.

• In 4.0.1, if I have multiple firefox windows open, when I try to close one window, it closes all. Why can't I close just one window at a time?

I open multiple Firefox windows so that I can quickly Alt+Tab between windows instead of using my mouse to point to tabs. When I close one of my Firefox windows, the browser closes all my windows. What happen to the "Close" feature under the File tab? Why don't I have the option to close only one window at a time?

I don't understand what happened above, but ericn1, wasn't your problem that you tried to close one browser window using the red X, and ALL of them closed? How did any of the above help you solve your problem? jscher2000 gave you alternate methods of closing windows but said that closing a window with the red X "should" work. It doesn't work, because it is closing ALL your windows, not just the one you are clicking on. I am now having the same problem. with Firefox.
Understand I do not have the problem with any other program. In other words, I can open multiple windows in Paint Shop Pro, IE, Notepad, etc. and close one with the red X and all others remain open. It ONLY happens when using the Firefox browser.
The red X should close only the window that you are in when you click on it.
NOW, before someone suggests tabs, I don't like them and don't use them. My choice. Before someone says my browser is out-of-date, (3.6.13) I am using it because it was the last version that worked reliably on my computers, both at home (Windows 7 Professional) and my office (Windows XP Professional).
When I updated to the last Firefox browser, both computers started seizing up (nothing worked and had to reboot using power button) Removing that version of Firefox and going back to this version solved that problem. Fact remains, version has little to do with this problem. I've seen other posts around the net about this with different (newer) versions of Firefox.
So . . . does anyone have a solution to this that doesn't involve using keystrokes or hot keys to close windows instead of the red X that should work properly?

• I am trying to download the new version of Firefox but when I try its says to close all firefox connections but I don't have any open. The only open window is the one to start the download only

I am trying to download new version of Firefox. After I try to run the program it states to close all Firefox versions but there is no Firefox open except for the download. What else can I do

Do you have the "Green Arrow" icon on one of your toolbars? That usually will list your most recent downloads with a button to open the folder where they are saved.
If you don't have that, you can open the full download list using either:
* Ctrl+j
* Tools > Downloads
* History > Show All History, then click Downloads in the left column
Can you find the download listed there and click the "Open Containing Folder" button?
Are you downloading Flash or Acrobat/Reader?
For Flash try: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
For Acrobat/Reader, you may not need an update.
Firefox's plugin check site only recognizes the Adobe XI (11) series as current, but if you have checked for updates in your Adobe Reader X or Adobe Acrobat X product (Help > Check for Updates) then you do not need to update the plugin. For this older Reader/Acrobat version, please rely on Adobe for information on available updates and not the plugin check site.

• Just updated to Firefox 7. Even though I have checked the appropriate boxes in the "Privacy" menu for clearing history and password when Firefox closes, all passwords and history are there next time I start Firefox.

I had this set up in previous versions of Firefox. After updating to 7, it no longer works. I went to "Tools" "Options" "Privacy" I checked "clear history when Firefox closes" I also went to settings and checked all the boxes. Then clicked OK. I closed Firefox, waited a few minutes, started it again, and all my history and passwords loaded on startup. Why?

I'm a little puzzled that your post shows Firefox 29.0.1 but you said you updated this week (Firefox 32.0 was released this week). ???
One of your settings is places.history.enabled = false, which could be a problem for saving history. I'm not sure how that could have gotten switched. Could you check here:
"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Privacy
Under "Firefox will: Use custom settings for history" make sure you have the settings you want.
Note: I think I have read that if Firefox is set to clear history at shutdown, then Firefox might not save any history during your session.
Can you find an Old Firefox Data folder on your desktop? If the Reset feature ran, your old data would be in that folder and we could discuss how to restore them.

• I changed the "keyword url" setting in about:config to allow it to be used as a google search box, but when I exit and restart firefox it reverts to its previous setting.

chrome://browser-region/locale/region.properties
This is the URL that is in "keyword:URL" in about:config in my Firefox 4. I attempted to change it to http://www.google.ie/search?q= so as to use the address bar as a search bar. It works fine while Firefox remains open, but when I exit and come back later to open Firefox and use the address bar for search items I find that it has reverted to the default setting.
Can you please help me resolve this issue?
Thanks

You can start Firefox in <u>Safe Mode</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
* Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
* https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Safe+Mode
* Troubleshooting extensions and themes
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
* Use "Disable all add-ons" on the Safe mode start window to disable all extensions.
* Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")
In Firefox 4 you can use one of these to start in <u>Safe mode</u>:
* Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
* Hold down the Shift key while double clicking the Firefox desktop shortcut (Windows)

• Macbook freezing when more than one program runs

Hello all,
My Macbook is about a year and a half old. A few weeks ago, it crashed catastrophically, and the geniuses at my local store replaced the logic board.
Since getting it back, it's been crashing almost every time I try to run more than one program, such as itunes and safari. Ichat video or photobooth on their own cause it to freeze. The freezing process is gradual; first the program I'm looking at freezes, but I can navigate to other programs, but within a few minutes those freeze as well. During the freeze, the cursor moves (in beachball shape) but the screen is unresponsive and apple-option-escape has no effect; the only solution is to manually turn it off. It's also taking longer and longer to boot up. This happens when it's plugged in as well as on battery power. It's gotten to the point that I'm scared to do work on it, because I can't trust it to work long enough to save my data. What happened? Is this the result of my "fixed" logic board or something else? I am getting SO FRUSTRATED by how unreliable my macbook has become!!

To rule out any 3rd part apps/additions are causing the problem, try booting into Safe Mode...

Have you replaced/changed Ram lately? ...if so, try reverting back to the old.
You could also ensure you've run your standard Maint. scripts (via Onyx, Cocktail etc...) and perhaps boot to the Install DVD to verify/repair the hard drive and its permissions. Booting to the Install DVD and running the Apple Hardware Test (hold 'D' on startup) could also reveal things.
Failing all that, try resetting the SMC and Pram...

To rule out a 'bad' hard drive you could either replace it physically or try booting from another Macbook via firewire...

These are all a bunch of general procedures that the user can try to eliminate the issues - if nothing works, you'll need to make another trip to the genius bar.

• One command to close all files?

Is there a single command to close all open files?
I've opened up a bunch of files, and if I do a Force Quit on Pages, all the files re-open automatically when I re-open Pages.
Thanks for any help.

HI PM,
Are you actually doing "a Force Quit"? Or is this a vocabulary issue?
Force Quit (option-command-esc(ape) ), which brings up the dialogue below, is intended for use only when an application is not responding, and the regular means of quitting the application are not available.
The Quit command is the last item in the Application menu ("Pages" menu in Pages), or from the keyboard, command-Q.
In addition to the two methods for closing all open windows in an application described in Jerry's post, there's one more: Option-click on the Close (red) gumdrop of the front window.

• Firefox closes ALL tabs & exits when I ONLY close the AOL Mail tab.

When I have maybe 5 or 6 tabs open, and I am done with my AOL mail tab and close it ONLY, the entire window with all of my pages close out. My system is set to recover the last tabs I had open, but when I reopen Firefox (I have to manually, the system does not even restart it), everything is gone. I tried opening AOL mail in another separate window, and this still happens (when I close out the AOL page only). I checked my updates and Firefox is the newest. I run both my security software programs 2 times per day, along with STOPzilla. It clears cookies and I have never had an issue until this past week. I have not downloaded anything new. All is fine as long as I do not open AOL mail. Thinking this was an AOL issue, I contacted them, and they assure me that it must be my issue (of course). I then removed and deleted the Firefox program and re-downloaded it....still no help.
I am using the latest AOL mail, and cannot help but wonder if there is something in that which causes me to lose everything. It's frustrating because none of my tabs are kept, even though I have it set to caution me before the Firefox window is closed, and remember my tabs for "next time."

• Why doesn't Firefox close all tabs when exiting?

I see several users have problems with Firefox not saving tabs when closing..... My trouble is just the opposite: Firefox re-opens all tabs when restarting, even when "quit" is selected in closing.

Make sure that Firefox is closing properly, otherwise it may be considered as a rash and that causes Firefox to reopen those tabs automatically.<br />
See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_hangs and Firefox hangs (Hang at exit)
Firefox 3.5 and later versions will automatically try to restore the tabs and windows from the last session if a crash has occurred or Firefox wasn't closed properly the previous time.
Set the pref browser.sessionstore.max_resumed_crashes to 0 on the about:config page to get the about:sessionrestore page immediately with the first restart after a crash has occurred or the Task Manager was used to close Firefox.

To open the <i>about:config</i> page, type <b>about:config</b> in the location (address) bar and press the "<i>Enter</i>" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.<br />

• When I want to close only one window it closes all of them. How do I close just one.

I only want to close one window. How can I do this without closing them all. But for this, I would use Mozilla all the time.
Thanks, Joyce

You do not mention what your Operating System is. You should be able to close only one firefox window, and then finally exit from firefox as a whole by using Firefox Button -> exit.
Also or alternatively consider use tabbed browsing.

• Opening Thunderbird once gets me several identical thunderbird pages in succession. Closing one of them closes all.

When I double click on thunderbird to open my mail program, I get 2 mail home pages in succession. When I close one of them, both close.

Firefox should have no impact on Thunderbird as it is installed in a separate place and uses a Profile separate from ones used with Thunderbird.
This can be a Thunderbird issue and since this is a Firefox forum there is generally not many here that do Thunderbird support.

• Firefox closes all windows

Ever since taking the latest update for Firefox, anytime I click on a link on a page that opens into a new window, if I try to "X" out that second window, it also closes the page I came from. If I manually open another window for whatever purpose, it seems to work fine. It's only when I get a new window from a link in the previous one. BOTH windows always shut down. Not tabs, but windows. It's very annoying if I wasn't done with the first page I was on. I even tried to minimize the second open window, then right clicking from my task bar to close it, but it will still also close the original window I was in when I clicked the link. This has happened on MANY websites I've visited from links.

Hello LoriH, Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)
* You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.
Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"
If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshooting extensions and themes article for that.
To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.
Thank you.

Hi..,
any way u r executing the programs in the same session but between diff. internal sessions u can use the IMPORT and EXPORT options ( ABAP MEMORY )
or do one thing...
<b>In the first program Copy these fields into a file in the <b>application server</b>,, and in the Second submit program u retrieve these variable values from the Application server file into these two variables!!</b>
just now i have solved one of the issues of this Kind by using an Application server file.
In the first program..
IF ( uf_instn = 'ACEFR' and uf_messg <> 'BSP' ).
OPEN dataset 'FILE' for output in text mode encoding default.
transfer lf_jobname to 'FILE'.
transfer gf_jobcount to 'FILE'.
CLOSE dataset 'FILE'.
ENDIF.
and instead of using the GET parameters in the second program ..
OPEN dataset 'FILE' for input in text mode encoding default.
read dataset 'FILE' into v_jobname.
read dataset 'FILE' into v_jobcount.
CLOSE dataset 'FILE'.
This has solved my problem !!!!! hope this helps u also!!
