When I import music, iTunes 8 creates duplicates in library

When I drag and drop music from a folder into iTunes 8, itunes will create a duplicate for every song. I tried unchecking "Copy Files To iTunes Music Folder..." in Preferences>Advanced. It still does it. Help please.

Three solutions or workarounds I have seen as this clearly is a bug. I do not use iTunes match and have never seen these issues myself
1) Store > Update iTunes Match if you have it turned on
2) Logout of iTunes Store and login again
3) Download the free single of the week. I have no idea why this works but some people have said it worked for them

My music is on a nas. Loaded using windows media player in WAV.
When I import into Itunes only the record apears, no Album name etc
How can can I see all the details

Information is often stored as tags embedded in the file.  WAV does not support tagging. I don't know how WMP works but iTunes keeps its own database about media.  For many audio formats, track information will be stored both in iTunes' database and in the file itself as tags.  With formats such as mp3 most tags (not all) will 'travel' with the file when copied.  This does not happen with WAV where the information is only stored in the player application's database.

  • When I import to itunes my computer sleeps or shuts down.

When I import to itunes, and work in another program, my computer either sleeps or shuts down. Sleeping is much more frequent but it's extremely frustrating. Obviously I didn't use to do this. I suspect it is as a result of an upgrade, but am unsure. any suggestions would be very gratefull accepted.

Not it. Thanks. I tried it, so thanks for the tip, but I get the same error message. That I need to authorize this computer to get the purchases. I guess it's not really an error message. But It will not let me proceed any further. Once again I have deauthorized and this is the only computer that is authorized for this account.

    Pretty annoying. Any ideas?

  • ITunes creating duplicates in my Windows music folders?

I ran out of space on my local hard drive, so I moved iTunes and all my music folders to an external drive. I wish I had checked here first, and gotten the instructions to move my music, but I didn't. I just dragged everything to my external drive.
I guess I made a mess of this, because many songs were duplicated (and triplicated) in my music folders. I deleted everything and tried again. It seemed to work. This was a few weeks ago.
Tonight I noticed the space used on my external drive suddenly doubled from 30 GB to 60 GB. I started looking in album folders and I'm finding duplicates again. For example, it will list songs as "Honky Tonk Women", "Honky Tonk Women1", "Honky Tonk Women2", etc.
Can anyone tell me why this is happening, and how do I fix it? Manually deleting 8500 songs will take forever! If I sync my iPod, will I end up with duplicates in my iTunes library?

Ed, I did have "Copy files to..." checked when I added music the first time. Per your advice, I've unchecked that box.
    Question: What is the EHD?
You say I can delete the music not in my iTunes music folder, but all the duplicates are in there.
I've been looking in my iTunes player, selecting songs, and getting info to check its path in my hard drive. Depending on if the song ends in 1, 2, or with no number, I then know which version I can delete from the iTunes music folder. I can't even imagine how long it will take me to do this about 8000 times! I'm tempted to delete everything and start over, but reloading all my CDs will take me weeks as well...

  • My itunes creates duplicates in my iphone

Fisrt I purchased Anamanaguchi through my iphones's itunes. Then I created a ringtone using a song from that album. Then the original song keeps playing ringtone part. In my macbook, it plays full song, but in my iphone, it plays only ringtone part, even though I deleted and repurchase, that problem still occurs. I connected with my itunes in macbook again and now it gives my iphone many duplicate songs. I tried deleting that ringtone and reboot my phone but it is still the same. I really tried of it. I will never connect my phone to macbook again

  • Is there a way to replace tags on import rather than create duplicates??

I use the tag engine to connect with the KEPWARE OPC server program and at times I want to change how the tags are located inside KEPWARE but keep the same tagnames inside LABVIEW. I export the .scf file and modify it inside EXCEL. When I import it again it will create duplicate tagnames. When you have 4000-8000 tags, it can take awhile to delete the duplicates. It would be great if we could replace the existing tag name data. Maybe I should be creating a vi to modify the properties of individual tags instead. How does anyone else work around this issue??

I would export all of the tags and then modify the ones that need to be modified. Then, before I import them, I would create a new scf file. This way there are no duplicates.

  • ITunes creates duplicates in my iTouch...

I have a large number of Korean songs/artists in my iTunes library and I prefer to have the English first and then the Korean name/title. I've noticed that sometimes when I change the information for a song, I will have two of the same song on my iTouch but not in my iTunes library. (The song with the original information and another of the same song with the information that I changed) Does anyone else have this problem or know of a way to fix it? Thanks in advance.

Look at your iTunes -> Preferences -> Advanced. Is "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" checked?

  • When I import music, I don't know where its being saved.

I have done many successful imports in my time, but suddenly my 'recently added' file has just dissapeared and the music I import isn't saved in the library file either! Any tips on where it might have gone?

This depends on whether you're talking about importing new music from audio CDs or adding files from other locations, and on your iTunes preferences.
If you're importing music from audio CDs, then the files will be automatically sent to your the default iTunes Music folder location you've specified in iTunes. See iTunes > Preferenes > Advanced > General, and check the path in the iTunes Music folder location field.
For other files you may have added to your iTunes library, they should have been copied to your iTunes Music folder if the Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library option has been checked. Otherwise, the files will be in their original locations if other than the iTunes Music folder.

  • Does copying in music files create duplicates?

After installing iTunes 11 I found that my music and video were all listed with the ! (exclamation mark) and I had no access to them and the message "the original file cannot be found....." (Only the few that I had bought from the iTunes store were still accessible - the ones copied from CDs etc were not).   I tried to locate the orignal files but it seemed that the music and video files were nowhere to be found.  So I copied in my 1,080 music files and 16 video files from an external back up, and it now works ok.  But by copying in the music and video files have I now created duplicates?  Are the original files still hidden somewhere taking up space on my HD?  How would I check on that?

Normally an installation should not delete files.  Occasionally people here have reported it did for them.  Since it shouldn't, we don't know why it would.  It's good you had a backup.
If you use iTunes default preference settings (i.e., if you have not changed them you do) it should put all your media in a Media folder in your Music > iTunes.  Since you are seeing ! something has happened to cause the reference in the main iTunes library database file to have a bad reference for where your media files are located.  So either the files have gone missing or were moved (by you) to a place where iTunes' addressbook is incorrect, or something happened during the updating of the library file to result in bad references.
Look in your iTunes Media folder and see how many copies you have of files.  Use Spotlight to search for a track you know exists and see if there is more than one copy on your computer.
If you now have a lot of dead links in your library look at: Super Remove Dead Tracks - http://dougscripts.com/212 then type "super remove dead" into the search line to get to the free Applescript rather than the app.

  • ITunes creates duplicate tracks on its own

    Hello everyone,
I noticed recently that iTunes is creating duplicate tracks on its own. The new “tracks” all reference to the same file. Sometimes there are up to 4 duplicates (see screenshot). As you can see on the far right of the image, it seems that every time I ran iTunes the tracks are added.
I did not change anything recently, but noticed that iTunes also updates my Cover Art, even though I explicitly unchecked the checkbox the settings…might be connected to my issue.
    Any advice is much appreciated!
    regards
    modtastic

Is the media folder stored on an external drive? If you start iTunes with an external disconnected it will "notice" and mark all tracks as missing. If you then add media by scanning folders it won't notice that it is already connected to the files and will add them again. Next time you start iTunes you can have two tracks linked to the same physical file.
How do you normally add media to the library?
To check your library for duplicates use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. Keep holding down shift until you have clicked on the text Show Exact Duplicates or it may still use the loser definition. If you don't see a menu bar press Ctrl+B to reveal it or Alt to show it temporarily.
If you find that you have true duplicates you need to manually select all but one of each group to remove, or use my DeDuper script if you don't want to do it by hand. The script attempts to take account of different types of duplicates which need to be handled differently, merges playcounts and preserves playlist membership. Please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping. See this thread for background.
iTunes doesn't generally do much in the way of background media updates, but it may reveal those enacted by something else, such as Windows Media Player.

  • Many events and photos are missing from my iphoto.  I have time machine and would like to restore without creating duplicates. The issue is although my photos are presently blank time machine/iphoto does see the file so importing them will create duplicat

For some unknown reason, events and photos in my Iphoto are appearing blank. The photos have a title / placeholder but no picture. I use time machine and have back ups, my goal is to restore the photos without creating duplicates. Unfortunately iphoto sees the blank photos as if the picture exists?  Help

If you want to use your back up you need to restore then entire Library from Time Machine, and then replace the damaged Library with it.

  • Best way to import music folders into new media library

I have searched, but have not been able to find an answer. I have recently just moved my music library from my internal hard drive to an external hard drive. I also consolidated my library so that it will have the new naming convention, etc in the new media library.
I am now ready to import songs/folders into my new library and want to make sure I do it correctly. Is it as easy as moving my music folder to the new external HD music location; selecting file/add to library/ and then selecting the folder? I just want to make sure I am doing it correctly. Thanks in advance!

    iTunes > preferences > advanced
    1. make sure iTunes is pointed to your external HD
    2. check +keep iTunes media folder organized+
    3. check +copy files to ... when adding to library+
all new content will be added to the specified location *provided that* the external HD is mounted on your desktop before iTunes is launched.

  • When I boot up itunes it now says "library.xml" instead of just "iTunes"?

I recently tried to export my library which resides on an external hard drive to another external hard drive and failed. Not only didn't it copy but I couldn't find my library.
I managed to recreate my library in tact, and really don't care about the exporting aspect any more, but now when I boot up instead of saying "iTunes" at the top of the iTunes window and on my taskbar, it says "Lbrary.xml" as if that is the name of the software rather than iTunes. Everything seems to be working fine, but I wonder if there is a way to get it to say "iTunes" again.
    Thanks for any help.
    Mike

What you see at the top of the iTunes window is usually the name of the folder where your "iTunes Library.itl" file resides (that is your main library file). By default that folder name is "iTunes" and that's why you'd see it displayed, not because that is the name of the program.
But now with "Library.xml" showing I wonder if you re-built your library by opening your .xml file? Just for kicks, you might hold the Shift key as you launch iTunes and select "Choose Library" at the prompt, then navigate to where your "iTunes Library.itl" file resides and see what comes up.

  • ITunes creates duplicates when Adding a Folder

Lately, whenever I add a folder to iTunes it creates a duplicate of each song. I have to go in and delete each occurance -- very irritating. I have the Sound Check volume adjuster in Preferences enabled. Maybe it has something to do with that. Any ideas?

No, I do it the normal way. I simply use the Add Folder function and locate the folder on my computer, which is always in a separate directory. I do not put the folder in the music library. Usually, I delete the original folder once the music files have been copied. Basically, iTunes is duplicating the files for no apparent reason -- it's certainly nothing I'm doing.
BTW, once iTunes has completed copying to the iTunes folder, it adds a "1" to the duplicated file. For example, in the iTunes folder "Joy Division\Substance," the duplicated files are represented this way:
    Joy Division - Transmission (1979).mp3
    Joy Division - Transmission (1979) 1.mp3
You can't have two files with the same name in Windows' folders.
    Thanks for your suggestions, though!
