When I import my photos into lightroom 4 they all turn to black and white...what is going on?

When importing the photos are color...but when I go to the develop module the all start going to black and white...before my eyes!

sounds like you either got a black and white preset selected in the 'Apply During Import' section of the Import Dialog (over on the right), or you've created a default setting in Develop. For the first, make sure no Develop preset is selected. For the second hold down your Alt key on PC, or Option key on Mac in the Develop Module. The Reset button will turn into 'Set Default...' on the bottom of the right panel. This will open a dialog box. Choose the left button that says 'Restore Adobe Default Settings'.

  • Can't import new photos into lightroom 4, any help?

I have macbook pro, a external HD with all my RAW files in a folder called 2013, I imported edited and export 2 photos into the same external folder, using lightoroom 4. Now I wanted import the others but they all grey out and there's no import button to import, any ideia what's i'm doing wrong?

Take my apologize for the delay doceddy. This issue is 90 percent permissions related. But one thing is confusing in this. If it would be permission issue it should not affect for example the desktop folder. .
    Testing:
1 / Create a floder TEST on the desktop.
2/ Use the transfer method which you normally to download the rwas from your cam. Put few raws into the TEST folder.
3/ Run Lightroom and try to import those in TEST.
4/ If it does not work: highlight the test folder - right click - properties - check if there is read only attribute.
5/ If it so - try to put the blue marker from this box away and click apply.
6/ After this close the dialogue (the operation will run some small time). Then do it again if your system allowed you to apply the change. So second time should be the attribut away. If it is start Lightroom and try to import again from TEST.
7/ Give me some feedback then please - I will suggest you some other steps if it does not work.
    Good Luck

  • Cannot import a photo into Lightroom 5.2

See the Lamp and Chopper video at http://www.smugmug.com/gallery/21425173_dGgs24

OK, the first "problem": one of them IS the original, which you modified by applying the tint adjustment. So why would you expect to see it in its "original" non-tint form? That will only happen if you step back in the history panel. Lightroom NEVER changes the original image data, but it does update the previews that you see with any adjustments that you make.....so you will always see the modified version of your original. In the Develop module, you applied the +100 tint adjustment, so you'll then see that adjusted image in the Library module. So seeing the modified original file in Library is the expected view, yes? You then exported that file, during which process Lightroom reads the original file, adds whatever changes you have in the develop history, and writes the new file.....which as expected then matches the modified original file when you see them side by side in the Library.
I really don't understand why you see this as a problem, it is entirely normal behaviour.
The second problem: when you made that +100 tint adjustment to your original, the effect of having that XMP setting checked in your Catalog settings means that almost as soon as you made the change, Lightroom will write that change into the XMP portion of the file's header. It does NOT, however, recreate the small embedded Jpeg preview in your file. That embedded thumbnail preview is what you see when you look at the file in something like Explorer/Finder, and if you fully open that file in say Windows Photo Viewer you will still see the original image (because Lightroom hasn't changed it).
However, when you remove that file from Lightroom and then re-imported it, the sequence is as follows:
In the Import window, Lightroom will show you the embedded jpeg preview, i.e. the original unmodified image.
But then during import Lightroom will detect the XMP data that was written to the file, and because Lightroom wrote it it can decipher it and apply it. So after import you see the modified image. Again, entirely expected behaviour, once you understand the sequence. Also note that most non-Adobe products will NOT be able to understand XMP develop data written by Lightroom, so will ignore it. So open that file in a photo viewer, you see the original, but open it is Photshop or Lightroom and you see the modified version.
But that aside, there really was no need to remove the original in the first place.

  • All my previous events disappear when I import new photos into iphoto?

Each time I import photos from my Canon digital camera into my iphoto, the new import is the only event that shows. I can't access any menues or events in iphoto; when I open iphoto from the dock, only my most recent event opens. To import photos from my camera, I open iphoto, connect the USB cord to my camera and the USB port on my computer, and click import. The next time I open my iphoto, nothing is there except my last import. When this happened a few weeks ago, I looked at the discussions and found out how to rebuild the library, which I did, but I can't do that every time I import photos. What is happening? What is wrong with my iphoto?

It sounds like you have a damaged database.
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
As to why you have repeated corruption - Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
If you're running a Managed library, then it's the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing
If you're running a Referenced Library, then you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced and iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing.

  • When I imported email addresses into TB, they landed in the nickname column and I can't manually change 1000 addresses!

Is there a way I can change the nickname column to email addresses? If I try importing the address book again (I have it on a different flashdrive), I'm afraid I'll have 2 copies and things will get even more complicated.

My guru said when he imported the addresses there was no opportunity to 'line up the data.' These addresses came from Outlook Express. Do you still think we should be able to line them up? I hate to delete what I now have (have redone maybe 10% of the 1500 addresses) and then wind up in the same fix. Thank you for your help!!!

  • Pictures turn to black and white exclamation marks when i click on them!

Could someone please help me! My iphoto randomly deleted all of my photos from it's library, and i have spent ages re-importing them. now when i click on a picture to view it in large it changes to a large, blurry exclamation mark within a second! What is going on?!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
The ! or ? turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
My guess is that what has happened here is that your database has been damaged and the re-importing effort hasn’t worked because you’ve been importing to the same damaged DB.
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.

Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop

  • Why can't I import any photos into lightroom?

I just bought Lightroom 5 and installed it. I need it so that it can help me correct Chromatic Aberration in portraits. I have tried importing photos but nothing will import. They won't import as raw files from memory card or jpeg from desktop or external drive. Loads fine into Photoshop Elements. If someone has a fix to this, please help. I will need step-by-step instructions. I don't understand complicated technology lingo. I'm using a Mac. My camera is a Canon T3i. My card is a Lexar…tying to think if there is anymore info I need to give. Please help before I go bald. Thanks!

  • Discontinue the auto import of photos into Lightroom from photo card

How do I stop Lightroom from automatically importing pictures from the camera card inserted in a card reader?  I am using Lightroom 4 in a laptop running Windows 7.

I have the same problem. My program has worked perfectly until a few days ago.
Now the module import has the central screent in blank, empty, and not import anything.

  • How can I put 1 object in a photo in color but the rest in black and white?

I have iPhoto '08, and I have seen many photos that have interesting effects like the one I mentioned before. I would really like to know how I can allow the main object in the photo to remain its natural color, but change the rest of the picture to black/white or sepia.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. You mean like this?
This was created by Photoshop. But it's a little over the top for must of what we want to do. Photoshop Elements can do the same as can some of Larry's other suggestions. I've worked with PSE and it's an excellent editor with about 75% of PS's capabilities at about 1/7 the price.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

  • Importing default treatment black and white?

Whenever I import photos now (LR4), they auto preset to black and white on 'Treatment' on the develop tab rather than 'Color'.  I've uninstalled and reinstalled the program hoping to get rid of preferences but it continues to do so.  I can't find the setting anywhere, please advise.

At some point you have changed the LR default processing for the images of this type (LR remembers a separate default for Raw and for camera JPG, for each camera model).
These settings are what you get when you import a fresh image that does not already have any editing to say otherwise; or, when you press the Reset button.
The settings are shared with Adobe Camera Raw, outside the LR program data, so have not been removed and replaced when you reinstall. This is "user" data in other words; LR does not know that this was not deliberate.
To undo this changed default, click on an example image that this is happening to. Then in Develop, hold the Alt (Option on Mac) key down, and the "Reset" button at lower right changes to "Set Default..." - click that.
A dialog opens where you can do one of two things: put back the processing (Develop) factory default that Adobe originally supplied, or else, take the Develop settings of the current highlighted image and make those into a new, customised default (which is how this will have all got altered in the first place).
Once LR is returned to the Adobe factory default, which I recommend, new imports will once more start out using that. If you then click "reset" on already-imported images (the ones accidentally turned into B&W) they will adopt these same settings too; though note: this will also clear all Develop work you may have done on these images.
You can still customise this default differently, as you wish - you do not have to settle for the Adobe settings in particular. Those are just one "known baseline" option that will get you started acceptably. But whatever change you do make to these defaults, needs to be something that you actively want future imports to initially show.

  • Unable to import photos into Lightroom 5 from anywhere.

I am running the CC version of LIghtroom 5 on a macbook with OSX 10.7.5.  I upgraded to lightroom 5 and have not been able to import any photos into Lightroom.  Every folder that I click on in the import dialogue looks empty.  I have tried from the WD external hard drive that I store my photos on and directly from the desktop.  It doesn't recognize photos anywhere.  I've unchecked the "hide suspected duplicates" box and that doesn't make a difference.  It's like LIghtroom thinks they don't exist.  Help?!

    Hi,
can you please post screenshot of the import dialog when it fails? Do you crate a subfolder in target folder? You use file rename, apply preset, set metadata during import. Try to deactive these. (May be some corrupt / missing data).

  • Can't import iphoto library into Lightroom

Lightroom does not appear to recognise my pics in the Mac iphoto library.  I can import from other folders/files but not directory from iphoto. Likewise I can't export a photo back into iphoto once it has been "developed" in Lightroom.
Do I have to change some preferences or something?

I recently changed my pc for a mac and all my old photo files were transferred across into iphoto and any new photos from my camera were imported straight into iphoto.   I have since started a course where we use Lightroom but find I can't import any photos stored in iphoto into Lightroom.  iphoto is always "shaded out" in the list when I try to import into Lightroom.
What do you suggest I do in order to import these photos into Lightroom?
