I am getting this error message when trying to burn a DVD: The disc can’t be burned, because the device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media. iMac, Mac OS X 10.6.8 Memorex DVD-R 12x Any ideas?
First, try a different batch of recordable DVDs. If you still have problems, you may want to make an appointment at the genius bar and have it checked. The drive may be failing.

The disc can’t be burned, because the device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media.
Can anyone help
ThanksUnfortunately your drive has *probably* failed. You can try a cleaning disc, sometimes thst can help. First though try resetting the smc and pram.
To reset the smc on Desktop Macs
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord.
Wait fifteen seconds.
Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer
Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys. -
While using my Mac OS X Version 10.6.8 to burn a DVD-R I keep getting the error message: "This disc can't be burned, because the device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media."
So, I tried the iDVD and got the same error message.
Can anyone out there help me? I've tried both a DVD - R, and a CD.
I made a short 2:20 minute presentation from iMovie and used the "share" to iDVD, then to iTunes, then I tried exporting it to Quicktime and saved it on my desk top. That is when I tried burning by opening the blank DVD-R in the finder then draging the movie on to it and selecting the burn option. Thank you for your time in helping me with this frustrating problem.
Peace, PyxidisI have had that same problem, but it was unrelated to any upgrade.
In my case the optical drive was simply failing, and I replaced it - it was a Powerbook, about eight years old.
It is possible that it's unrelated to Lion, as unlikely as this may seem, since you've just upgraded.
Optical drives seem to be the most life-limited component in these computers. The laser just seems to get weak with age. -
have Mac OS X 10.6.8; Put a few iPhoto-photos to 'burn folder'; press 'burn' symbol. This window appears: 'Burn - The disc can't be burned, bcause the device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media'; what to do next to address this?-
That's a hardware issue and I'd ask on the forum for whatever Mac you have.

I have a mac book pro OSX 10.7.5 I am getting this message when trying to burn a cd: The disc can’t be burned, because the device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media.
Look here:
Burner - device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media. -
Been trying to burn a movie onto DVD and get this "The disc can’t be burned, because the device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media" Anybody know what it means and what to do? Help! Thanks
It generally means that the media is faulty or of poor quality. Most of us here use Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden media.
OR
Your Superdrive may need a clean.
If you have further questions please state what Mac, with what versions of OS X, iMovie and iDVD you are using. -
Is this just a coincidence with a drive failure or is it a problem with Lion?
Try a different DVD or try a commercial laser head cleaner Disc

My Mac OSX (version 10.7.5) is coming up with error message when I try to write a disc "The disc can’t be burned because the disc drive is not accessible (error code 0x80020020)." I have tried several discs with the same message - Same also when I tried my external disc writer. Both disc drives will read my discs that have music or photos on it, it just won't write any new discs - any clues?
Hi Klaus1
So, I tried all the suggestions and followed the links - all to no avail.
as you can see, (screenshot below) my iMac is a 21.5 inch late 2009 model which isn't showing in the updates listed above
My system report shows that my Mac has the following:
I reset the PRAM and the SMC - still have the same error message when I try to burn discs. I've used both CD's and DVD's and tried with my external Discwriter too.
Any further suggestions?? -
I updated to Mavericks and now I can'burn any DVD's any more. I get the following error message and the disk is ejected: The disc can’t be burned because an unexpected error occurred (error code 0x80020000)
I did burn the same way in MAC OS X 10.6.8. with no troubles!
Can anyone please help me out?
I use for years DVD-R of TDK 4.7GB 16X.Hey topo27,
I would try out the following and see if it helps:

I keep getting this error message when I (right-click) on a photo file on my desktop to burn to a CD. I don't understand this code...does anyone? Thanks Ariel**: The disc can’t be burned because an unexpected error occurred (error code 0x80020000).
I tried every obvious solution to this problem with different types of disc (-R; +R; -RW and +RW) and the problem persisted. Then I read about removing a hyphen in picture filenames. I renamed all the images and bingo there were no further problems. Apple should have solved this by now. This error code has been reported for several years and my MacBook Pro is quite new. Anyway, I hope this helps. It does work.

CDs work but not DVDs "device failed to calibrate laser power level for med
Hi
I've been having a problem with my disc drive.
I can burn CDs but not DVDs. Have OS 10.5.6.
While trying to burn an error message comes up saying
"This disc can't be burned because the device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media?
I tried to go into Apps - Utilities - Disk utilities and repair, but this message still shows up and refuses to burn anything even in Toast.
Please help. Any advice would be valuable. Thanks.njdesigner wrote:
Thanks for the advice. I'm going to try the brands you suggested.
I don't think the drive may be dirty, because wouldn't the CDs not work as well?
Not necessarily. Different lasers, different power levels, etc.
It's really a dual drive: CD and DVD. Almost two separate devices with a common motor and platen, etc.
You can get a cleaning CD from RadioShack and elsewhere. Get the dry one with the small brushes. Works fine on everything but a notebook. -
this has begun happening as soon as i installed the new OS... anything will help thanks!

Dvd burner error message "device failed to calibrate laser power"
When I try to burn a dvd, I get an error message:
The disc can’t be burned, because the device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media.
and then it spits out the disk. This has never happened before.
Advice? If Wjosten's suggestion does not work, clean the dvds - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=50448 or use another dvd brand - Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden are highly recommended by Mac users.

Blank DVDs show up as read-only (can't burn DVDs)
When I insert a blank DVD, the disk utility opens and it says the disk's capacity is 0 bytes, and it is read-only. The disk also doesn't mount, I have to eject it through the disk utility.
I have tried two brands that have worked in the past, one is DVD-R, and the other is DVD+RW. I haven't tried to burn a DVD in at least six months, so I don't know what software or settings are different since then.I usually repair permissions after updates for that reason, but I did so again anyway and rebooted with the same result.
But when I created a new account and inserted a blank disk I was asked what to do with it so I opened it with Disk Utility to see what it says about the disk. It still said, "size 0 bytes, read-only" even though when I inserted the disk it said, "You've entered a blank disk, what would you like to do?"
So I guess at some point, 1) I set blank DVDs to open automatically in Disk Utility, and 2) for some reason Disk Utility says blank disks are read-only (or when that happens you can't write to the disk)
Anyway, all I had to do was set blank DVDs to open in the Finder. I'm burning a DVD right now.
Thanks for the help.
