Well there is Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck witch includes step by step instructions to run disk repair without the install disk.
But before doing that, it's a good idea to backup. You may want to troubleshooting your superdrive / disk before hand. if I disk repair fails you may need the disk working to re-install the OS.
Dose the computer read any DVDs? if no, you may want to use Troubleshooting the slot load optical disc drive.

When the DVD is in the drive (and DVD players is open) click on File>get disk info.

When I insert a DVD game ( brand new) I can hear it spinning but it will NOT download. When I insert a DVD or a CD for it to play it does NOT play. I have the PC set to play automatically and I have also tried downloading the player they show to download for Windows I know it is three initials and it starts with a V?? it made no difference. Why doesn't Windows Media player play te? I do not care who plays them I just need to have my PC accept and to download from Dvds and CDs and to also play them would be really great. Every DVD-Video disc contains one byte of data representing a region code, which limits where the disc can be played.

Once you have set the region in DVD Player five times it cannot be changed.

I have been using a Mac Book pro from 2011 (Early 2011 Model), In the mid of 2012 I have planned to upgrade, and bought a 240 GB SSD and 16 GB ram from OWC, Installed successfully and bought another 750 GB WD Sata Disk and connected it to the Optical Drive Bay of the Laptop, using the optical drive as an external device now
I was using the SSD as the main disk for all the applications and OS itself, and tranferred all the user library (iTunes Library, iPhoto Library, Documents etc..) to the additinal 750 SATA Disk,
Last week the Mag Safe cable has been worn out and seperated completely from the adapter, I tried soldering the cable again and it was working for two days, third day The machine stopped charging and it was working until the battery run out of charge,
Now I have bought a new Mag Safe Charger for 108 Singapore Dollars and it wont charge, read in iFixit Forums to change the Mag Safe DC in Board, so found a new part in singapore and replaced DC in Board myself, after doing this when I connected the new mag safe adapter, it fired the cpu fan for two second, I was able to see the green light the adapter and it stopped again and the green light wont lit up now
Removed the logic board from Laptop completely and tried connecting the Mag Safe Adapter I can see the green light,
So with all the above details, Iam confused whether its the Logic Board or the Battery that is giving me issue, I can find out the problem by contacting a Authorised service centre, but Iam thinking whether its is worth to repair it or buy a New Mac Book Pro ?, Because if I need to change the logic Board need to spend 900 Dollars + 100 dollar service charge
So I was trying to remove the 750 GB WD Sata Disk to see if I can get the data back so I can buy a new Laptop without worrying,
The real issue now is when I connect the 750 WD Disk using a sata to usb converter cable to my official macbook, it says the connected USB device is drawing more power than expected and it wont even detect the hard disk, Iam wondering why it cannot detect the hard disk even in the disk utility, is there any way to get the data back from the 750 GB WD Sata disk (which was connected to the Optical Drive Bay)

Welcome to the discussions!
It sounds as if your disk was not correctly formatted to work with the Mac operating system. I suspect it was formatted in FAT32, which is primarily a Windows format. This type of format will not allow the disk to accept any files larger than 4GB. That's probably why you are seeing the crashes.
Connect the drive to your Mac and open Applications > Utilities > Airport Utility.
Click your disk on the left and click the erase tab on the right. You need to format the drive in +Mac OS Extended (Journaled)+. Formatting will erase everything on the disk.
Then you could try the drive again attached to your AirPort Extreme to see if that will do what you want.

Replaced Optical Drive now Mac book will not boot up

I bought a second hand Mac Book Pro A1150 model. It did not have an optical drive so I bought one, installed it and now my Mac Book will not boot up. When I take the drive out the Mac Book boots up fine. I was told that the optical drive although used was tested and work when it was shipped out. I'm a little new to Macs but not new to working on computers. Is it common for a possible defective optical drive to casue a Mac Book pr to not boot up or does this sound like an issue with the optical drive cable, or possibly the logic board?

That is true. I cannot think of any way to test the Optical Drive without swapping it into a known correctly operating MBP.
A thought which probably may not be an issue. When I installed an Optical Drive in my old (2006) MBP, I remember seeing in the instruction manual an item called a grounding pad (which looked like a tiny steel brillo pad with out soap) which was missing in mine. The MBP worked and I essentially ignored it. Perhaps that may not be case with your situation.
My thoughts are that the Optical Drive is malfunctioning and the cause of your problem. Perhaps you should consider getting a new replacement from OWC. But that entails a $100 risk with no guarantees of success.

This is a blank disc? A disc you burned? Burned discs have a relatively high failure rate if you buy cheap DVDs. I bought some Dynex ones once and about one in every four fails.
Have you tried other DVDs to check if it is a drive issue?

DVD player hangs when I insert blank DVD

I have a 2 month old iMac and yesterday it stopped accepting DVD/CDs. Don't know if that's what you meant by "hangs". If I restart my computer, the DVD/CD will work and I can insert/eject normally. I have a trouble call into Apple. They're supposed to call me in a couple hours. I'll let you know what happens.

Prolonging the life of your optical drive?

I recently had to have the Superdrive on my MacBook replaced, as it had only lasted a rather woeful 7 months since I bought the computer new.
The guy at the authorised service centre gave me a tip: he said that to prolong the life of any optical drive (PC / Mac / laptop / desktop), you should leave a CD in it at all times. He seemed to think that this would protect the laser.
Is this just an old wives' tale, or does anyone here think that it could be a good idea?
I went through two optical drives on my previous Mac (a G3 Powerbook), so as I'm sure you can understand, I'm getting kind of paranoid that my new Superdrive will go wrong again, so any other tips would be most welcome!

About the only benefit I could see in doing this is that you would keep the laser covered and perhaps prevent dust build up. Most notebooks don't have slot-loading drives so a Q-tip can easily clean them... and as the MacBook does have a slot-loading drive, I can't imagine any dusty getting in there. I've lost count of how many desktop/notebook optical drives I've had over the years. I don't recall ever having one fail and I've never kept them loaded with a disk. As mentioned, I would imagine the extra wear of the drive spinning up all the time would be more likely to cause a shorter life (plus the annoying delays associated with optical disks mounting, etc).

The import command only works with audio CDs. So if you burned the files in mp3 format, try instead using the "File > Add file to library" or "File > Add folder to library" commands.

I read of a work-around to stop this, but it does not meet my needs. Yes, you can stop it. When you plug in the phone, down in the lower right of your screen, click and pull up the Motorola Device Manager. Do as you please with it.
