When I launch Lightroom, a pop up states "an error occurred when attempting to change modules".
Just installed Lightroom. Not getting the normal activity when launched. Just: "an error occurred when attempting to change modules".
Moving this discussion to the Photoshop Lightroom forum.

"an error occurred while attempting to change modules" when launching lightroom
I get the message "an error occurred while attempting to change modules" when I launch the app on my mac.
Every other adobe app works like Photoshop
I have followed all the troubling shooting steps in the link below, not one of them makes anything different. Except I tried the last one. I created a new account, simply logged in and launched the app and everything ran normally. No problem. However it doesn't say what to do if that works it just says try it.
Error changing modules | Lightroom
Obviously this means its going to be an issue with a support file in the one user account but what one?
I also can't un install lightroom either, when I go to the creative cloud plug in on my menu bar the uninstall says its unavailable but the others are fine.
Any ideas?I just found the answer for me.
I did step 5 on this support article:
Troubleshoot unexpected behavior | User account-specific | Adobe software | Mac OS
It is to repair the permissions on the hidden Library folders. -
I installed Lightroom 5.6 (full version, not trial) on Mac, when starting I receive an error message "An error occurred while attempting to change modules".
I tried removing it and reinstalling but the same error comes up.
Anybody have any recommendations?A forum thread from 3 years ago talking about LR 1.x which had this problem seems to need permissions fixed or new folders created with the corrected permissions. You might try doing a repair permissions for your user and/or run LR as an administrator user. I am a PC person so cannot tell you exactly how to do that.

Despite it is claimed in Adobe forum that Lightroom is fully compatible with OS Maverics on my MacBook Air IT IS NOT. A message "an error occurred while attempting to change modules" appears every time I try to open Lightroom. This happened immediately after upgrading to Mavericks. On my doughter's same machine Lightroom works perfectly. Can anyone help?
Surely the Adobe forums are the place for help with Adobe applications. The fact that the problem doesn't occur on your daughter's machine suggests that it's not an issue with Mavericks but a local problem on your own machine.

I found a solution in one of Apple forums. I will copy her post:
" I was checking the differences between my normal admin User account/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Lightroom contents and the one on the clean other admin User folder in the same place on the G4 PB where Lightroom2 had launched normally and noticed that on the one that works there are a slew of folders (Develop Presets, Export Presets, External Editor Presets, Filename Templates, Filter Presets, etc etc). On the main admin account, there was only one, the first. So it seemed the install on that account didn't load all the needed info. I simply copied the missing folders from the account that worked into the Public folder, switched to my main account and added those missing folders in the proper place. Voilà!. Now Lightroom launches normally and I don't get the dreaded missing modules alert."
The problem with me is that I do not have a working copy of Lightroom, just 1 account in which it doesn't run and don't know where to copy the missing folders from. Please send some advice.Surely the Adobe forums are the place for help with Adobe applications. The fact that the problem doesn't occur on your daughter's machine suggests that it's not an issue with Mavericks but a local problem on your own machine.

I have Lightroom 5 installed on my iMac which I downloaded (uploaded?) to my MacBook Air (via wi-fi) but unlike the iMac, I'm unable to use the program on the MacBook Air. When I open the program on the iMac and click 'file', (as people using the program would know) there are 21 options - import pics, export, etc, etc - however, in the version on the MacBook Air, opening 'file' gives me four options - New Catalogue, Open Catalogue, Page Setup and Printer - and with that comes the pop-up message "An error occurred when attempting to change modules". Any ideas please?

I have Lightroom 6 (not CC) on a Windows machine. I'm prompted to log into Creative Cloud when I restart my computer (I don't have, use, or pay for Creative Cloud), and then when I launch Lightroom, it tells me to use the application I have to log into my Adobe account...AGAIN! And then to further add insult to injury, I'm prompted to enter in the license number of my product. I've gone through this process a dozen times now...SCREAM!!!
Paulou12 what type of a Creative Cloud Membership do you have? You can find details on how to update Lightroom using the Creative Cloud Desktop application at Install and update apps - https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/help/install-apps.html.
Finally if you are in a managed environment then please work with your I.T. department to apply the update. -
Hello, I recently downloaded a trial version of Lightroom and then decided to get the monthly photoshop membership. Now, when I launch Lightroom, my choices are to enter a serial number to continue the trial. On the adobe website, it says "You can convert your trial to a Creative Cloud complete or single-app membership by purchasing on the Creative Cloud website. After you purchase your membership, your desktop product trial will automatically be licensed upon relaunch." But this is not the case. I do not want to risk losing my catalog and the work I have already done in Lightroom, so what should I do?

Lightroom trial doesn't show complete menu selections or import button. Also get error message on launch: An error occurred when attempting to change modules. I am unable to find/see the following file to try renaming the SLCache and SLStore files: System Library/Application Support/Adobe. Any ideas? I only have 16 days left on the trial and have been unable to get it to work on my Macbook Pro. This is all I am seeing after Lightroom opens. Thanks!
Thanks to both of you for attempting to help. I finally figured out what was wrong . . . it was a Permissions problem. Very frustrating, but after scouring the troubleshooting tips I finally found the one that solved my problem. I had to add a User and give it Read/Write privileges to Lightroom. The file I had to add the User to was Hidden on my Mac, so that added an even bigger challenge to the mystery. Only a few days left on my trial version! I hope I have time to try it out!

Have downloaded new Lightroom 5.4 from CC. When trying to launch am getting following error message and then Lightroom crashes: "an error occurred when attempting to change modules". Can't find a thread which relates to this error message.
Hi 99jon,
Many thanks for that. Had been going through this list yesterday and now again today:
Ref Solution 1: Lightroom is at its latest update
Ref Solution 2: It's interesting how I cannot find the Preferences file anywhere on my mac. (new mac pro, OS 10/9.2) . . .
Ref Solution 3: Lightroom doesn't allow me to do anything after the error message appears
Ref Solution 4: don't have any Nik Software plug-ins
Ref Solution 5: checked permissions and changed all to "Read & Write" - makes no difference
Ref Solution 6: I don't have a different user account on my mac.
Not sure what else to do. -
