When I move a mouse through a page it starts blinking like crazy; however, it works fine in safe mode.

This is happening on my Alienware M11x laptop. I do not know if the switchable graphics is affecting this, but I have tried integrated and discrete graphics and the same problem exists.

As it works fine in safe mode it indicates an extension/theme as the likely cause. Follow the procedure in the [[troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article.
You can also try disabling hardware acceleration to see if that is related. In the [[Options window - Advanced panel]], on the General tab, deselect the option to "Use hardware acceleration when available". You will need to restart Firefox after changing this setting for it to take effect.

  • When I try to open up firefox it just starts blinking like mad, then say's firfox is already running when it's not. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling and it did not work. I can open internet explorer

    when I start Firefox, it just blinks like crazy and won't do anything. I have gotten a message reading that Firefox is already running. internet explorer still is working
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
    == a few days ago. Can't remember if it started before or after I deleted macafee and added norton or not

    I have this problem too: when I have used and shut down FF and then try to start it again, I get the message that FF is still running, while it's not. Using Windows task manager, I can see that the process is in fact still running. In order to startup startup FF again, I have to end this process manually. This problem is really annoying since I open and close FF several times a day. I run Windows 7.

    Hi, Tom.
    FYI: You've not stated which of your listed Macs is having the problem. However, the following may help in any case:
    1. Did you install Front Row using the Front Row hack on a Mac that did not ship from the factory with Front Row installed? If so, See my "Uninstalling the Front Row hack" FAQ. This has been known to cause a variety of problems, including the menu bar (Clock, Spotlight) issues you noted.
    2. If you did not install the Front Row Hack, an incompatible or corrupted Startup or Login Item may be partly to blame for the problems with the menu bar. My "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ can help you pin that down if such an item is causing the problem.
    3. As a general check, run the procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified.
    4. Re: Safari and Mail, if not sorted by any of the above, see also:• "Safari: Blank icon after installing Security Update 2006-002 v1.0."

  • The tabs disappeared at the top, and when I move the mouse up to the top, they do not reappear and I am stuck on the page!

    the tabs recede into the top of the screen, along with the toolbar. sometimes, when I move the mouse up to the top, the tabs and toolbar reappear, but sometimes it gets stuck and I am stuck without the toolbar. I can only navigate from the page I am on. I am not the most computer savvy but I am good at following directions! so if you could instruct me how to adjust the settings so the tabs and toolbar remain permanently at the top of the screen, I would really appreciate it, thank you.

    Click View->Toolbars and make sure "Navigation Toolbar" is selected.

    At various stages over the years, mouse-related iTunes trouble has been associated with driver conflicts. So it might be worth following up on that possibility.
    Head to the drivers and downloads page for your model of PC, and check to make sure you're not behind on any chipset and input-device-related driver updates. (And while there, just in case, also check to make sure your BIOS, sound-card/integrated audio, and video-card/display-adaptors are up to date.)
    If you're behind on anything, and you update, does that help with the mouse-related iTunes issues?

  • How do I get the Adobe PDF navigation bar to automatically appear at the top of my screen again instead of when I move my mouse?

    Before I upgraded my computer to Windows 7 and updated Firefox to the latest version, when I opened a PDF document online, the PDF navigation/menu bar would automatically appear at the top of the screen. Now it only appears at the bottom in a blue bar when I move my mouse around.

    cor-el, thanks for the tip. While I certainly scoured Adobe's preference settings to look for something relating to that exact thing, I never went to their help site until I got your post. I found out that the floating toolbar appears because the PDF opens in'' Read Mode'', which you can turn off for all future documents by doing this:
    * Quit your internet browser
    * Launch Acrobat (or Reader)
    * Choose Edit>Preferences
    * Click on the Internet category on the left
    * Deselect “Display in Read Mode by default”
    * Click the OK button.
    * Relaunch Acrobat
    Something important to note, if you have both Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Reader, you need to do the above in both programs (same steps).

  • MacBook Pro Display (window) shifts off the screen when I move my mouse

    With a slight move with my magic mouse, my entire open window will shift completely off the screen with only a part of the window still visible. I have to click on the exposed edge of the window for it to shift back into place. It's only the window of the program that I have open that moves. The dock and the desktop image stays in place. I'm using an HP external monitor now but it was doing this before I hooked up the monitor. I've tried maximizing and minimizing my window but that does not seem to have an effect. Could it be the magic mouse? Thanks in advance for any help.

    You cannot boot an iBook from an external USB drive--only a firewire drive. Actually, the drive is just a drive--it is the enclosure that determines USB vs. FireWire. If you could find an appropriate firewire enclosure, you could remove the drive from the USB enclosure and place it in a firewire enclosure and then be able to boot from that. Or you could just purchase an external firewire drive if those are available where you are.
    FireWire external drives are quite useful. One option would be to mount the external drive on the good iBook, format it properly for OS X with Disk Utility, and then use a program like Super Duper to make an exact clone of your internal hard drive. This is a popular way of backing up your stuff. You can boot from either the internal or the external. This means that if your internal hard drive were to die, you would have all your stuff on the external, and could run off of that. Since you are already using the USB for backup, it would probably be best to acquire a new firewire drive for troubleshooting and testing if you decide to go this route, since you really don't want to lose your existing backup.
    If you did have a bootable clone, you could see if the sick iBook would boot from it or not. However, it may be more productive to pursue your other thread about the boot problem. I see that Richard has joined the thread as I had hoped he would. He actually works on iBooks and is very knowledgeable.
    Also, if you do get the second ibook working and want to install OS9, you might want to post a question in the "Mac OS X v 10.3 Panther and earlier" forum. I'm not up on this myself, but I believe there is something about installing OS 9 drivers while formating or something like that. I believe the smart guys on that forum could give you some guidance so that you can avoid the problems you encountered earlier.
    Good luck!

    On my Mac desktop I must have changed a setting so that now when I move the mouse the open windows fly off to the sides and I can't see them. They come back when I move the mouse, but it is so annoying. How can I make the windows not disappear like that?

    Click on the Hot Corners..  button and look at the four definitions.  In the picture below, if you moved the cursor to the right top of the screen, it would slide all the applications off the screen as you describe and show the desktop.  Set it to "-" to deactivate.

  • When I move my mouse my screen moves

    I apologize as this is probably a dumb question but I'm a new user. I must have accidentally hit some button and now wherever I move my mouse, my my screen moves all over too. I've searched everywhere to try and solve this but I can't. For example when my arrow goes to the bottom I eventually get to the see the icons but then the stuff at the top disappears.I just want my old screen back where I see everything and the screen stays still when I move my mouse.
    Thanks.

    Welcome to the discussions. Perhaps you inadvertently entered this mode by holding down the Ctrl key whilst scrolling up with the mouse. If so, to return to normal, hold down the Ctrl key whilst scrolling down. ...From a comment in this _Magnifying With a Touch_ article:
    "...if you have a mouse with a scroll wheel. Just hold down the control key when when you scroll up to magnify, and scroll down to return to normal."
    Settings are in the Mouse tab of +Keyboard & Mouse+ System Preferences with an Options button for more settings. Also:
    "You can use keyboard shortcuts to control zooming. To make the screen image appear larger (zoom in), press Command-Option-equal sign (=). To make it appear smaller (zoom out), press Command-Option-hyphen(-)."
    ...quoted from this Apple doc:
    _Making it easier to see what’s on the screen_
    For portables, see this Apple doc:
    _Apple Portables — How to use trackpad screen zooming_
    ...although it's a little out-of-date as 10.5.6 introduced a dedicated Trackpad pane in System Preferences.

  • With the newest auto update version of firefox there is now a white bar that pops up when you move your mouse over that area. i want that gone, how?

    when you move your mouse underneath the address bar a white bar pops up, this makes it so you can't click buttons or links on websites, like login buttons for example. also when in full screen mode you can no longer mouse over tabs at the top of the screen, only that white bar shows up. that prtty much kills full screen usage for me. so that popup white bar and the full screen with the white bar without tabs has just about ruined firefox for me. anyway to fix this would be great.
