When i move something to the trash i have to enter an administrator password

After I installed Lion, I now have to enter an Administrator and password before the item is deleted.
Also, it never shows up in the trash after it is removed form the original folder.
Where are the files going that are deleted?

Well I found the answer in a different community.
The problem was that somehow when I loaded Lion, permissions were changed for my own trash folder.
The fix was to open the terminal and run the following command:
1. Fire up Terminal - located in your Applications/Utilities folder.
2. At the command prompt type the following exactly (just copy and paste it to ensure it's entered properly):
sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash
3. Hit Return. You'll be asked to enter your Admin password. Note that the cursor within the Terminal window will not move as you enter your password.
4. Hit Return
5. Restart your Mac or log out then back in again.

All seems good now.

    Check this Link out.
When I updated to Mountain Lion my iMac messed up file permissions and always when I booted or started up my iMac it went to terminal screen because start-up disk was read-only. You might have to change file permissions to what it was so your mac won't always ask your permission to do something (assuming you are admin of your mac).
PRAM reset might help too. Instructions can be found from the discussion that I linked (there's another link for PRAM [parameter random access memory] reset).
    Good luck!

  • When I move items to the trash I get asked for my password.

When I try to move any item into the trash I a screen pops up and says that the finder needs my password in order to complete this action. So once I enter in my password the item gets deleted from the desktop or wherever but does not even show up in the trash. My computer has never done this before until recently and I find it annoying that I have to type in a password to move an item that doesnt even show up where I move it. Is there any way that I can fix or change this?

Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on solving Trash issues. You can also try using Trash It! 5.1 to fix the problem. Or you can try this:
Open the Terminal in the Utilities folder and paste the following at the prompt:
    sudo rm -Rf ~/.Trash
Press RETURN. Enter your admin password when prompted. It will not echo to the screen. Press RETURN again.

  • When I move items to the trash they do not go into the trash, they are deleted entirely

Heading above pretty much explains it.  Sometime recently, my trash started acting differently - when I attempt to move an item into the trash, I get a message asking if I want to delete the item permanently.  I am sure this is a fairly new phenomenon.

Click on the item in the Finder's sidebar with the house icon and verify that you are able to write to this folder in the Sharing & Permissions section of the Get Info window, and that it isn't locked; if it is already set this way and you get that error, open the Terminal in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder and run the following:
    mkdir ~/.Trash
If you get a message stating that the folder exists, run the following:
    sudo chown $UID ~/.Trash
    chmod u+rwx ~/.Trash
The first command in the second set will prompt you for your administrator password; nothing will appear in the Terminal window while it is being typed. In either case, click on the Finder icon in the Dock with the Control and Option keys pressed, and relaunch it.

  • HT1751 I copied my iTunes folder to an external HD and now I cannot delete it. When I try to move it to the trash it displays The item "iTunes" can't be moved to the Trash because it can't be deleted.

I copied my iTunes folder to an external HD and now I cannot delete it. When I try to move it to the trash it displays: The item “iTunes” can’t be moved to the Trash because it can’t be deleted.

Close iTunes. Click the icon to start it, then press and hold down the left shift key. Keep holding until asked to choose or create a library. Choose the iTunes folder on your external drive. That should bring back all your playlists, ratings, play counts etc. You may have to settle for removing and reloading the media onto the device again. That's not too bad, but what you don't want to have happen is your apps being removed and reloaded as then you can lose settings and data. If that looks likely backup and then restore the device rather than sync it.
If for some reason rebuilding the library the way you did has moved files around then the restored library may have trouble finding things. If so post back and I'll explain what to do...

  • Gatekeeper failure: Application is damaged and can't be opened. You should move it to the Trash

    I have installed Eve online.
With the first try to start it I received message "Eve Online is damaged and can’t be opened. You should move it to the Trash".
I know my Gatekeeper may protect me from apps downloaded from internet so I tried open Eve online application with Ctrl also. I tried open it using context menu also.
Everything ended with same message = Damaged move to Trash.
Re-download and reinstall resulted in the same behavior (almost 8GB download).
However I found out later on that disabling Gatekeeper by selecting "Allow applications downloaded from: Anywhere" is the only way how to solve it.
When Gatekeeper is off application works without any problem.
So my question is: Is this behavior of Gatekeeper correct?
I do not think so. Gatekeeper should stop mark applications as broken if they are not. It can be marked as dangerous. It can be marked as Blocked. But it should say always: Gatekeeper marked it as dangerous because ... Gatekeeper blocked it from start because ....
Am I right? Should I write a bug report for this or there is something I missed?

    Hi, thanks.
To be honest I checked it and I found their suggestion to switch off Gatekeeper.
However I expected I can avoid Gatekeeper using Ctrl or starting application from context menu because I prefer to keep Gatekeeper switched on for regular work.
I know now, that I cannot. The only way is to disable Gatekeeper generally.
But the question is: Do you think that message "Application is broken..." is valid for case when Application is evaluated by gatekeeper as potentially dangerous? Based on this experience I see it wrong. Application is working ok and Gatekeeper marks it as broken.

I have a macbook pro with OSX 10.9.3 and Safari 7.0.4. How do I remove BING FROM SEARCHING when i type something into the search bar

See below if the search engine setting was changed without your knowledge and you can't change it back.
You installed the "Genieo/InstallMac" rootkit. The product is a fraud, and the developer knowingly distributes an uninstaller that doesn't work. I suggest the tedious procedure below to disable Genieo. This procedure may leave a few small files behind, but it will permanently deactivate the rootkit (as long as you never reinstall it.)
Malware is constantly changing to get around the defenses against it. The instructions in this comment are valid as of now, as far as I know. They won't necessarily be valid in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for more recent discussions or start a new one.
Back up all data. You must know how to restore from a backup even if the system becomes unbootable. If you don't know how to do that, or if you don't have any backups, stop here and ask for guidance.
    Step 1
In the Applications folder, there may (or may not) be an application named "Genieo". Genieo may be partially installed even if this item is absent. If it's present, select it and open the Finder Info window. If it shows that theVersion is less than 2.0, download and install the current version from the genieo.com website. This may seem paradoxical, since the goal is to remove it, but you'll be saving yourself some trouble as well as the risk of putting the system in an unusable state.
There should be another application in the same folder named "Uninstall Genieo". After updating Genieo, if necessary, launch "Uninstall Genieo" and follow the prompts to remove the "newspaper-style home page." Restart the computer.
This step does not completely inactivate Genieo.
    Step 2
Don't take this step unless you completed Step 1, including the restart, without any error messages. If you didn't find the Genieo application, or if you couldn't complete Step 1 for any reason, stop here and ask for instructions.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Frameworks/GenieoExtra.framework
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
    from the contextual menu.
If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
A folder should open with an item named "GenieoExtra.framework" selected. Move that item to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your administrator password.
Move each of these items to the Trash in the same way:
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.completer.update.plist
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.engine.plist
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieoinnovation.macextension.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.genieoinnovation.macextension.client.plist
    /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/com.genieoinnovation.macextension.client
    /usr/lib/libgenkit.dylib/usr/lib/libgenkitsa.dylib
    /usr/lib/libimckit.dylib
    /usr/lib/libimckitsa.dylib~/Library/Application Support/com.genieoinnovation.Installer~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.completer.download.plist
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.completer.update.plist
If there are other items with a name that includes "Genieo" or "genieo" alongside any of those listed above, move them as well. There's no need to restart after each one. Some of these items will be absent, in which case you'll get a message that the file can't be found. Skip that item and go on to the next one.
Restart and empty the Trash. Don't try to empty the Trash until you have restarted.
    Step 3
From the Safari menu bar, select
    Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Uninstall any extensions you don't know you need, including ones called "Genieo" or "Omnibar," and any that have the word "Spigot" or "InstallMac" in the description. If in doubt, uninstall all extensions. Do the equivalent for the Firefox and Chrome browsers, if you use either of those.
Your web browser(s) should now be working, and you should be able to reset the home page and search engine. If not, stop here and post your results.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install this software. Chances are you got it from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad has a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If youever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
You may be wondering why you didn't get a warning from Gatekeeper about installing software from an unknown developer, as you should have. The reason is that the Genieo developer has a codesigning certificate issued by Apple, which causes Gatekeeper to give the installer a pass. Apple could revoke the certificate, but as of this writing, has not done so, even though it's aware of the problem. This failure of oversight is inexcusable and has compromised both Gatekeeper and the Developer ID program. You can't rely on Gatekeeper alone to protect you from harmful software.
Finally, be forewarned that when Genieo is mentioned on this site, the perpetrator of the scam sometimes shows up under the name "Genieo support." He will tell you to run the provided uninstaller. As he knows and intends, the uninstaller does not completely remove the malware.

  • Cannot move files to the trash bin

    Hello,
I recently upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion and have since also changed the administrator on our MacBook Pro. My account (formerly the admin) can no longer move files to the trash bin. My wife's account (now admin) has no problem doing so. When I try dragging a file to the trash I get "Finder wants to make changes, type the administrator's name and password to allow this."
Not something I wan't to be doing every time. Please help.
    Thanks,
    the RouleauFamily

Thanks for your reply. The permissions looked fine.
Here is the fix I found at http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/trash.html which worked:
    If the affected account is:
    Then type the Terminal command:
    Your Admin account:
    sudo rm -ri ~/.Trash
    Another user account:
sudo rm -ri /Users/user_name/.Trashwhere user_name is the short name of the affected account.
    Warmly,
    Olivier

  • Why does Mail say that I cannot move items to the trash????

I cannot delete email the "normal" way. When I set up my POP account, it created a second trash folder with the same name as my mail account. There are thus two folders in my Trash can - "On My Mac" and the one named after my email account. When I try to delete any mail it says that I cannot move anything to the Trash folder for my Mail account. I have to DRAG all email I wish to delete to the "On My Mac" Trash folder. ????????
I just want to be able to click delete and have email go away! Why is this not working?
    Thanks.

Select the mailbox you wish to correct, then select "Mailbox > Rebuild"
    Then do a PRAM reset:
    PRAM RESET
    Zap the PRAM
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Password to move items to the trash on my iMac?

Today, my iMac started asking me for my password to move items to the trash. In addition, if I do put the password in, it automatically deletes the file from the trash.
This does not happen when I move items from external drives to the trash.
I'm using an iMac 24 inch with Mountain Lion (10.8.5).
    Any suggestions?

I've got one more question. I just ran verify permissions on my iMac (Mountain Lion 10.8.5), and it says the permissions are incorrect for iTunes, Safari, java and shows a warning.
    Typically the permissions say:
    "Permissions differ on “Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/Resources/ca.lproj/AskUser.nib”; should be drwxr-xr-x ; they are -rwxr-xr-x .
    Permissions differ on “Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/Resources/ca.lproj/AskUserWide.nib”; should be drwxr-xr-x ; they are -rwxr-xr-x .
    Permissions differ on “Library/Internet Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin”; should be lrwxr-xr-x ; they are drwxr-xr-x .
    Permissions differ on “Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/Dutch.lproj/BookmarkTitleChange.nib ”; should be drwxr-xr-x ; they are -rwxr-xr-x .
Permissions differ on “Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/BookmarkTitleChange.n ib”; should be drwxr-xr-x ; they are -rwxr-xr-x ."
    The warning says:
"Warning: SUID file “System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent” has been modified and will not be repaired."
    Any suggestions?

  • I can not move files to the trash.

I can not move files to the trash. When I drag the file to the trash it does not move, but it does appear in the trash and when I empty it, the file is erased. When I go back to my files, the file I just deleted is still there. I keep getting the "startup disk is full" message so I need to delete files, but I can't. Anyone know a solution to this?

try getting a external drive such as a usb flash drive or a hard drive to transfer the files from the startup disk, and free up space.
    hope this helps!

  • Since I started using Lion (10.7.2) I'm prompted to type my password if I want to add a folder or put something in the trash. Is there a way to stop this from happening?

Since I started using Lion (10.7.2) I'm prompted to type my password if I want to add a folder or put something in the trash. Is there a way to stop this from happening?

It sounds like the permissions on your Home folder are snarky.
    http://osxdaily.com/2011/11/15/repair-user-permissions-in-mac-os-x-lion/
Restart Lion and hold down the Command and R keys.
You will boot into the Repair Utilities screen. On top, in the Menu Bar click the Utilities item then select Terminal.
In the Terminal window, type resetpassword and hit Return.
The Password reset utility launches, but you’re not going to reset the password. Instead, click on the icon for your Mac’s hard drive at the top. From the drop-down below it, select the user account where you are having issues.
At the bottom of the window, you’ll see an area labeled ‘Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs’. Click the Reset button there.
The reset process takes a couple of minutes. When it’s done, quit the programs you’ve opened and restart your Mac. Notice that ‘Spotlight’ starts re-indexing immediately.
