When I open Firefox 4 RC1 by clicking an external link (as from my desktop) I get an error: "there was a problem sending the command to the program"

A box with this error: "there was a problem sending the command to the program" always pops up upon clicking any URL sitting in my desktop (or from any other folder). It will not happen if Firefox is already open. However, it is only an annoyance as the page fully opens with no problem.
It started after I downloaded Firefox 4 beta ver 12. It continued after upgraded with RC1. It did not happen in my latest version of Firefox 3.6.x which I removed after installing 4 RC1

This has happened to me many times but on the older FF 3 It could be a small bug, One should list the PC's being used as it could be related? Mine is an E-Machine Mod, W3609 running W7.

  • After updating Firefox to 10.0.2, when I click on a link in an email, I get an error box saying "There was a problem sending a command to the program".

I have not changed/updated my mail client, Windows Live Mail, so I assume the problem is with the updated Firefox.

If a shortcut is used while Firefox is already open the error does not occur.

As reported in earlier replies, the annoyance disappeared after I upgraded to Roboform 7.5.6, from 7.5.4.

    Hi,
Have you try to un-select the Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) setting?
Click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Excel Options.
Click Advanced, and then click to clear the Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE)
check box in the General area.
    Click OK.
If the problem cannot resolve, the Run as administrator may selected.
Go to Office default install location: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12.
    Right-click EXCEL.EXE > Properties >
    Compatibility tab.
Under Privilege Level, uncheck Run this program as an administrator
    check box.
    Best regards.

You get message "firefox is still running" and computer restart doesn't help you. Try the advice below.
Make sure Firefox isn't running (end firefox.exe process in Task Manager or restart computer)
    Find your profile folder
    C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default
find file "parent.lock" in it and delete it (the file is empty, its function is to signify to Firefox whether it's already open or not).
Then try to open Firefox again. Will it start or not? What will it say?

  • There was a problem sending the command to the program when opening Microsoft Project 2010 files

When opening MS Project 2010 files from the file and print server, I receive "There was a problem sending the command to the program."  Copy the same file to my local drive and the file opens fine.  This can be repeated by several other
users.  Created a simple project file and once the size hit 1 MB, the error appeared.  The error appears on all files over 1 MB.
I am a domain admin, so it is not a rights issue.  This does not seem to be a network latency issue, the file copies extremely fast.
    Any ideas?

This message appears to be caused by Windows Explorer trying to send old-fashioned DDE messages to the Application.
Since MS Project has no "Ignore DDE messages" setting you might want to go change the compatibility settings for WinProj.EXE (and any shortcut to it) to Windows 7 or greater.  Hopefully then Windows Explorer will stop trying to send DDE messages.
Another possible culprit is older versions of the WinZip explorer extensions - I would disable them as well.
    Good luck,
       James.

  • New Win7 install. Can't open html files. Get "there was a problem sending command to the program".

When I try to open an html file on my hard drive, I get a "There was a problem sending the command to the program" error. There is no way I can open a local html file with firefox, even though Win7 sees it these files as Firefox documents. This is a brand-new Gateway tower running Windows7-64, Athlon phenom 4x processor, 6G RAM, and the latest version of Firefox (a week old).

    Try:

You can try to redo the default browser (temporarily make another browser the default).

  • The icon for firefox is not working. "There was a problem sending the command to the program" pops up. Cannot get in to firefox

Since the upgrade, the icon does not work. Now this message comes up. I made Google my home page by following directions on this site. I deleted the old icon as it didnt work, and this new one came up on my desktop and it presented the message above.

    Hi,
Before you open any of the applications, please go to Task Manager to see if their processes are stuck there. If so, shut them down and try again.
You can also try starting the applications in Safe Mode to determine if the problem is 3rd-party add-ins related.
Please refer to this article below to learn more:
    http://office.microsoft.com/en-001/support/why-cant-i-start-my-office-2013-application-HA104011864.aspx
As for the Excel problem 'There was a problem sending the command to the program', please note when double-clicking an Excel workbook, a
dynamic data exchange (DDE) message is sent to Excel, instructing it to open the workbook that you double-clicked. If you
turn on the "Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE)“ setting,
the DDE message sent to Excel by Windows Explorer is ignored, and Excel does not open the workbook that you double-clicked.
To automatically solve this issue , we recommend to run “Microsoft Fix it 20074” and follow the steps in the wizard:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/211494/en-us
You can also try to fix it manually by the steps under 'Let me fix it myself'.
If the steps above don't help, we can try to repair Office from Control Panel -> Programs and Features to check the result.

  • Receiving message"There was a problem sending the command to the program" every time I access a website using a desktop icon via Firefox.

When I click on a desktop icon and access a site via Firefox I get the message "There was a problem sending the command to the program". This started to happen after I downloaded the most recent version of Firefox. I uninstalled Firefox and reinstalled it and the message still comes up every time. The site will come up about three seconds after the message appears but the message is a real pain to put up with. What is the problem? I am ready to dump Firefox and go to Opera.

    Hi bob1935-
I did some research and found a couple of previously answered questions that have multiple options for solving your problem. Please look at these:

  • Excel won't open and error message There was a problem sending the command to the programe

    Hi there
I'd be grateful for your help.
I've just bought a new laptop and installed Office 2013.  I used Excel 2013, did what I needed to do and saved it.  This was 5 days ago.
Today, I've tried opening the file from my desktop and get the error message 'There was a problem sending the command to the program'.
And when I try to open Excel to do the DDE fix, which seems to be the best suggestion, I can't open Excel at all.  I've tried to get into it from the Apps screen.
Any help would be gratefully appreciated.
    Thanks

Don't seem like this can be fixed so I went back to version 6.0.2 which works good.
I have Chrome now as my default browser and will not use fire fox until they fix it!
    Chrome works great!

  • Can't open Excel files saved to desktop, get popup "There was a problem sending command to the program".

Whenever I save an MS Excel file to my desktop, it creates an icon on the screen. But when I try to open it, I get a popup that says "There was a problem sending the command to the program."
This happens with all Excel files - but MS Word and other files work fine.
    Thanks for your help.

Yes, I saw that earlier but it seems to be a temporary fix. I had the same issue return 2 weeks ago, then again yesterday. Each time, I've tried this solution which works but only to see it return at some time in the near future.
Coincidently, I have a similar issue occur on my iPhone 4S w/ iOS 6. There, my keyboard shortcuts won't work in forms unless I tick off Data and Documents iCloud setting, power down the phone, then turn it back on. But like this, it only seems to work for a temporary time and the problem resurfaces in a few days.

  • When I click on my browser it asks me if I want to allow program (x86)mozillafirefox/firefox.exe. I say yes and it says error- there was a problem Seems like a virtual loop.

When I Open Mozilla browser it pops up with Do you want to allow program: (x86) mozillafirefox/firefox/exe. I say yes and it pulls up the internet but says there was a problem. Happens everytime i open Mozilla. I've rebooted, opened in safe mode/
    Nothing makes it go away.

This is a brand new installation of Firefox? I don't know whether there is a troubleshooting article on this scenario.
Can you start up in Firefox's [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe%20Mode Safe Mode]? Hold the Shift key when double-clicking the Firefox program icon to start up in safe mode. You can ignore the checkboxes and just Continue in Safe Mode.

  • "Error: There was a problem adding your media." when importing audio, video, images

    Hi there,
I'm using Siena on a couple of machines: a desktop PC with Win8.1 and an 8" tablet running Win8.1.  On the tablet but not on the desktop, I receive the above error whenever I try to add an image, audio or video visual and then Add Media to it.
I can choose for instance an MP3 file or JPG but it never imports, instead telling me there was a problem.
On my PC it works fine.
I thought it may be because I have My Music and My Photos redirected to D: on the tablet, but moving them back seemed to make no difference.  Further, it doesn't matter *where* I try to open media from -- I get the same error. I've uninstalled and reinstalled
the app completely to no avail.
While I can develop on my PC, I really want to be able to do so on the tablet.
    Any suggestions?

Hi Solitaire01, what you describe is supported scenario which should just work. Let me gather more information about the environment you have and in the same time suggest a few things to try.
First, can you share the brand and the model of the tablet exhibiting the issue? Do you see any error message and if yes - what is the text of the message? Are you able to see the desired image in Siena Beta2 when you right click open the top appbar and
select AppData -> Embedded Media -> Images ?
Here is something you may want to try as an alternative:
    1) Copy your images to your Pictures folder, which is usually in C:\users\<your_username>\Pictures
    2) Add an image visual
    3) Set the Image property of the visual to "C:\users\<your_username>\Pictures\<some_image.jpeg>"
Please do include the double quotes in the expression.
This should render the image. Please note that when you use this method of rendering images, video and audio, you'll need to check the checkbox "Download and include images, video, ........" in the Publish backstage.
Hope this helps and looking forward to hearing from you about your tablet brand and model!

  • When my screensaver starts, it gives me an error there was a problem connecting to server

It seems like I'm having a problem with iPhoto. Whenever my screensaver comes on, it just sits on "Loading Photos" and then when I move the cursor to get out of the screensaver, I get a warning saying "There was a problem connecting to server XXX"
I don't know why it's trying to connect to this server. I have googled and searched and tried everything that everyone has said (renaming/deleting plists, removing all login items, clearing iPhoto and trying to start over...) but nothing has helped.
This error also comes up pretty consistantly when iPhoto is open.
I'm not really sure what else to check. I can't find any trace of the remote server, so I'm not sure why this is coming up.
I'm running Mountain Lion and whatever the latest version of iPhoto is.
    Any thoughts?

I was able to get it. Apparently there was some old photo in my iPhoto library that was being mapped out to the server that it kept trying to connect to.
Which should have been relatively easy to detect, except the way that iPhoto is setup, there was no real way to find the source for each photo.
What I was able to do to was, under photos, CMD-A to select all photos and then try and move them to an album. It popped up with a notice saying that it wasn't able to find XXXXX.jpg and I had the option to cancel or find the photo. So I renamed another photo on my desktop to XXXXX.jpg, and when the error came up, I selected Find and then used the copy on my desktop to replace it.
After I did that, it let me add all of the photos to an album and I was able to launch the screensaver successfully.
A pretty big pain in the but that would have been easier to resolve if the UI of iPhoto was a little more detailed or customizable. But oh well it worked for me.
    Hopefully this helps.
