When I open pdf with my Acrobat Pro 8, it takes a while, then says not responding

When I open a pdf with Acrobat Pro 8 it takes a while, then says "not responding" then grays the page out, then finally opens.  The same thing happens if I use Acrobat 10.  It doesn't happen with anything else.  Any ideas, please?

Do you have Acrobat 8 and X on the same machine? Do you have Reader on the same machine as well? If so which version? How much RAM? How much free hard drive space? What OS? What happens if you turn off your virus protection does things speed up?

  • Can't open pdfs with Adobe Acrobat X

I can't open pdfs with Adobe Acrobat X. I get this message:
Warning: Distiller will not process .Log, .PDF or .JDF file extensions
What do I need to do to be able to open .pdf files? I could open them previously.

What are you getting the message in response to? Was this a creation of a PDF that resulted in the message? What are you using Distiller for? Distiller can only open PS and EPS files for processing to create a PDF.
PDF files are opened in Acrobat. For opening PDFs, Distiller has nothing to do with the opening. So I really have no idea. It sounds like you may just be having a creation error since you mentioned a log file. If you were creating a PDF, have you checked the LOG file for the errors? The log file is usually located where you were going to create the PDF, but is created as Distiller processes the file (part of the general Acrobat creation process) and is deleted if successful.
If you were trying to create, go back to the original application and print to file with the Adobe PDF printer. Then open that file in Distiller to create a PDF. Any errors will be shown in the window and an indication if the PDF was created or not.

  • Can't open PDFs with Adobe Acrobat Reader DC

I downloaded AR DC and cannot open PDFs while using Google Chrome.  I get a message that I have to accept the end user license but I can't find it.  If I switch to Firefox I can open the same PDF without a problem.  I am on MacBook Air Yosemite 10.10.3

Chrome uses its own, built-in (and buggy) PDF viewer.

  • I have an iPad using version 7.0.4. When I open newsstand I cannot close it down again-all gestures and buttons do not respond, all else is fine. Any ideas out there?

My iPad will not shut down newsstand when I open it. Double clicking the button or multiple finger gesturing have no effect. Going to the store on the newsstand page and double clicking on that brings up the open apps but I still cannot swipe newsstand away. I can swipe the store away. No other issues with other apps. Anyone have similar happening and if so how did you sort it.
    Thank you.

I see what your saying as I can replicate it. It's goofy. Open Newsstand and tap Store. Once in Store hit Home button and then dbl push Home button and we'll see Newsstand is no longer present in running apps.

  • Problems with editing/opening PDF's in Acrobat X

We have 2 situations going on with Acrobat X:
    1.  We are scanning drawings on a Xerox Wide Format scanner to PDF's.  When I open them in Acrobat 8 Pro I can rotate and edit them.  When my boss opens them in Acrobat X the same file opens as a PDF/A and he can't do anything with them.  Any thoughts on how we can change this?
    2.  When my boss get's PDF attachements in his email he is not able to open them, he has to email them to me so I can open them in Acrobat 8 Pro.
We were considering upgrading the whole office to the latest version of Acrobat but until we can get these 2 basic items solved it won't happen.  Any help is appriciated.
We are running Macs with OS X verison 10.8.4
    Thanks
    Christinia

    Hi Christina,
For first issue, you are scanning your PDFs as PDF/A i.e why Acrobat 10 cannot edit them. (Acrobat 8 could edit PDF/A, this feature not to enable editing on PDF/A files were added in later versions). Now you can:
    1. Either turnoff the checkbox to create PDF/A while scanning as shown in image below: You need to click on "PDF Output Options"  button on the scan dialog to access this and other options.
    or
    2. When you open PDF/A in Acrobat X, you will get a blue message bar at the top, saying that "This file has been opened read only" along with the button "Enable Editing". You can click on "Enable Editing" to modify the pdf. See image below:
This should take care of the first issue.
Regarding the second issue of PDF attachments, I am not sure what could be the problem. It may be an OS issue related to file association. You can try associating the pdf files to Acrobat. To do this, Right Click on any pdf file and click "Get Info", then under "Open With" panel, select Acrobat and click on "Change All". See image below:
    Thanks,

  • Still no PDF Creator after Acrobat Pro 10.0 to 10.1.0 patch

I installed the Acrobat X Pro patch for 10.0 to 10.1 as recommended in this forum, in the attempt to solve the program's inability to create a pdf with EITHER Acrobat Pro's "Create PDF" option OR with the Adobe PDF Printer. My OS is Windows 7 Pro 64 bit. I can now create PDFs from WORD and EXCEL files; neither worked before the update.
The message from Acrobat's "Create PDF" is "Missing PDFMaker Files. Do you want to run the installer in repair mode?" If I chose "yes", Windows repair runs for a couple of minutes and stops -- but trying "Create PDF" again brings up the same message. This is true with ALL files I try.

As far as I know, PDF Maker for AA X does not work with versions before OFFICE 2007. That means you either need to go backward with Acrobat or forward with OFFICE. You might wait for others to confirm this, but it is what I remember seeing posted. However, you need AA X updated for Win 7 on a 64-bit machine. A few have gotten AA8 to work on Win 7 (not sure about x64). AA9 also works on Win 7, but I am not sure about the 64-bit system. I think the updates may have fixed that aspect. I think the bottom line might be your OFFICE software. Hopefully someone else will drop by to confirm this note. A compatibility chart is available at http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/333/333504.html. Too bad it is so hard to find. You have to search for it. Looks like compatibility for AA X goes back to OFFICE 2003, not OFFICE 2002. Guess your information may have helped me answer your question after all. Bill

I don't know if this is the right section but I experience the following issue with Adobe Acrobat Pro XI installed on Windows 8.1. When I start Acrobat the related window opens normally but, after some scroll up and down along the document, it blocks, Acrobat doesn't respond to any command I can give and, in place of the pointer arrow, a vertical bar, as the one of the text editor appears. The only way I can stop Acrobat is by means of the task manager. I tried to de-install and the re- install Acrobat but the behaviour is always the same. What can I do??

Have you opened Acrobat and gone to Help>Updates to get an updated install?

  • Can't open pdf created with Adobe Acrobat Pro

I can't open a pdf (that was created with Adobe Acrobat Pro) using Reader 11. However, the file will open with an older version of Reader (10.1.4) on another workstation. Is there any way to resolve the problem?

Reader 11 is not available for general release. If you participated in the beta program, there is a place for this discussion which you have been provided. If you did not participate in the beta program, then you should not yet have access to Reader 11. I have just checked the Adobe website and it is not available to download from there.

    Hi Mbs@adobe,
It sounds to me like you're trying to open a PDF via one of the Acrobat online services, not via Acrobat. Did you install the file that you downloaded after you signed up? Once you do, Acrobat will be installed on your computer, and you can run it locally (you don't access an Acrobat Pro subscription via the web--it works just like a version of Acrobat that you might purchase from the Adobe Store, or a large retailer).
Then, you'll open the Acrobat application from your desktop and choose File > Open to open your PDF file.
Please let us know how it goes.
    Best,

  • Safari Insists on opening PDFs with Acrobat

If I go to a PDF link in Safari, it insists on trying to open the with Adobe Acrobat, which isn't currently licensed for my computer. When this doesn't work it crashes Safari. How do I get it to default to preview? PDFs on my computer are defaulted to open with Preview already.

Well, I do sometimes need Reader. And it works fine if I simply choose, outside Safari, to open a file in it rather than in Preview. Part of the problem may be that I've got two startup disks on my Mac and the other one (where I don't have this problem) has Adobe CS4 with Acrobat Pro installed and licensed. I can't license it on this startup because of Adobe's licensing limit.
Also, go to Safari/Preferences - General. Make sure Safari is set as your default browser.
Tried that, Carolyn. Seems to make no difference.
The exact message, btw, is "Before proceeding you must first launch Adobe Acrobat and accept the End User License Agreement.

I cannot print a PDF from Adobe Acrobat Pro or Adobe Reader.  I tried on both MacBook Pros we have here, both now with Mavericks.  Error message says "Opening printer connection failed.  Unable to open printer connection . . . Please help.

  • I have created PDF from hardcopy by using my scanner. After I run OCR option for my PDF by using Acrobat Pro 9. But "Text-to-speech" functionality of the PDF says that an error message comes up that says the page is empty when I turns on the read out loud

I have created PDF from hardcopy by using my scanner. After I run OCR option for my PDF by using Acrobat Pro 9. But "Text-to-speech" functionality of the PDF says that an error message comes up that says the page is empty when I turns on the read out loud option in Acrobat. Kindly help me to sortout this problems?

So I tried generating the same PDFs on two other computers that have Acrobat 9 Pro.  Results were reproduced.  The verdict is:
    - complex PDF files (that is, containing cross-references, tables of contents, and bookmarks) generated by Acrobat 9.x Pro are roughly 2-5x larger than the identical file generated with Acrobat 8.x Pro.
    - different PDF conversion settings make a negligable difference (less than 10% rather than 70-80%).
    - using the "Reduce File Size" or "Optimize PDF" option cuts the file size roughly in half, almost always resulting in a "image downsampling mask" warning message, which requires acknowledgement (that is a problem for batch processing or automation).
    - adding an Acrobat watermark to the file cuts the file size roughly in half.
    - just using Save As to another filename has no effect on file size.
    - generating the PDF in Acrobat 9 with links but no PDF bookmarks still results in the inflated file size.
    - generating the PDF in Acrobat 9 without any links or bookmarks results in approximately the same file size as the Acrobat 8 PDF with full links and bookmarks.
It appears that Acrobat 9's manner of adding links is what's bloating  the files, and in my case it's probably not related to images or image resolution/print quality.  It's a shame, because Acrobat 9 seems to have made some  improvements to the Review Tracker interface, and a few other bells and  whistles which I haven't really gotten around to exporing yet.  But  unless I find a way to keep my links and the PDF file sizes comparable to what I was  getting with Acrobat 8 Pro, it looks like I'm going to stay with Acrobat 8.

I'VE CREATED A FORM WITH IMAGES. WHEN I OPEN THE FILE IN ACROBAT READER THE IMAGES ARE BLACK BOXES.
THE FORM HAs (extend features to acrobat reader). THE FORM WAS DISTRIBUTED.
NON OF MY EMPOYEES CAN SEE THE IMAGES. WHAT'S WRONG? CAN YOU HELP?

However, the view large images is an issue for a form that is being distributed. Either a note needs to be added to the PDF to tell how to enable the view or the images need to be changed so that the enabling is not needed.
