So if you tap the excel document you don't get a Done button at the top ? If not then try closing the Mail app completely : from the home screen (i.e. not with Mail 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Mail app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
If that doesn't work then you could try a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

If I receive an e-mail with an excel attachment on it or an attachment that has 'dat.' at the4 end of it, the attachment won't open when I try to open it. Most frustrating.
To get Thunderbird to open a dat Text file file using Excel.
Right click on attachment and choose 'Open'
A window opens asking what to use.
select 'Open with'
click on the drop down selection and choose 'Other'.
A small window opens showing a selection.
If Microsoft Excel is not in the list, click on 'Browse' button
a window opens showing your 'Program files'
If your OS is Win8.1 and 64bit version and Office 2010 32bit version, to find Office programs the default path may say:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\ This is the 64bit version path for Win8.
It is also the standard directory if using Vista 32bit.
So if your OS is Win8.1 64bit version you need to choose the 32bit path:

The number eg: '12' depends on the version: I have 2007
so if you use 2010 then it will be in Office 14 folder - list is below to choose correct folder.

* 14 = Office 2010
Now you should see 'Excel.exe' , This is the file you are looking for.
Select 'Excel.exe' and click on 'Open'
If you want Thunderbird to remember this and use it each time to open dat file, select the checkbox 'Do this automatically for files like this from now on.
click on Ok
This will now open a dat file from the attachments in an email using excel.
It will be listed in Tools-Options-Attachments-Incoming tab. -

Try sending them when connected via Wifi. There is a size limit when using 3G.

Regarding your suggestion to try the free LibreOffice, at the moment I don't need this, because I have downloaded a one-month trial Japanese Microsoft Office 2011 and can open my current files with that, although I do not want to revise any of my files until either this problem is solved, or I purchase a new MS Office.
Unfortunately there is not many MS Office software in English available here in Japan. I spoke to Microsoft Japan and even though they sell software, they do not sell any English verions of MS Office. Incredible, considering that the company itself is located in the US. They suggested I buy it from Amazon Japan, however Amazon do not have any available at this time and do not know if they will in the future.
Anyway, I have found a company which sells the downloaded English version (no disk). The software is Microsoft Office for Mac Home and Student 2011. I have not purchased it yet. It would take too long and the postage charges would be too high to purchase it from the US.

When I open a pdf document from my dropbox to view it, the document appears blank, even though I know the information is actually there. This also has happened with pdf documents that have been e-mailed to me, then opened to view and they are blank?? Why are they showing up blank?
When I open emails with PDFs I click on the attachment (doing this all on my iPad) it gives me the option to "open in iBooks", I accept then after that the document is sucked into my iPad but I can't do anything with the PDF after that. Where is the actual file on my iPad? Why can't I email or send these PDFs to my cloud (Dropbox)?
It's like once they go into iBooks they're stuck forever. -

If you use iTunes' default settings then when you add a file to iTunes it places a copy of the file in the iTunes media folder and it leaves the original in place. The exception is when you drag it to the Automatically Add To iTunes folder.
It does not convert the file. You can delete the original if you wish. -
I just set up a new computer running Windows 8.1. When I go to my icloud photostream, the pictures are in PNG format NOT JPG. When I open and upload photos from the photostream, the resolution is so low that the image quality is terrible. Help?!?
Hey Sierra, You can do just what you have stated. My question, what is your "other"? If it is over 1.5 GB you most likely have corrupt files. Doing a Restore to New, Factory restore should correct it. Just make sure you make a full backup of all information on your iPod to your computer before you restore, so you don't lose your stuff, contacts, videos, pictures, non-iTunes music, etc, use the cable and connect with your computer. Then, via cable, connect to your computer, run the Restore to new, don't use your backup. Treat this iPod as if it was your first one ever. When restore is done, set up and add what info you wish to install on this iPod. The music apps etc you purchased should be on your computer, if not you should be able to retrieve purchased apps and music from iTunes. Any music, videos, apps not purchased from iTunes will be lost to you if you do not save them to your computer or the cloud first. When your done, make a current Backup and you should good to go. At the moment when you open a RAW-file from Adobe Bridge by double-clicking, RAW-file is opened only in Photoshop. In the settings Adobe Bridge - in "open RAW-files by double-clicking in Adobe Camera Raw» box is checked. When you try any changes in the settings Adobe Bridge system displays a message:
Bridge's parent application is not active. Bridge requires that a qualifying product has been launched at least once to enable this feature.

When I open an excel file (via a button) , it has the filename as follows:
production_report[1].csv
The prompt to save or open has the name as production_report.csv
This prevents people saving the opened file as square brackets are not allowed in the file name.
Is this an apex issue (ie a problem with the way I specify the filename) or a browser issue, and is there a solution?
I am passing the filename in to my excel download page using the items/values settings.
eg
ITEM P12_FILENAME
ITEM VALUE production_report.csvYes, It works on firefox. It is only an issue with Internet Explorer.
However our web based application has to use IE and therefore when it calls apex it is in an IE browser.
I am really just producing a csv file, and opening it in excel. If this was fixed (or customisable in some way in IE that would help) -
When I open a RAW file from my Nikon's SD card it automatically goes to PS. I have a new Sony camera; when I open RAW photos from it, it goes to Perfect Effects 8. How can I change it so it goes to Photoshop instead of Perfect Effects 8?
When I have an NEF file on my desktop and click on OPEN WITH, it shows the programs, including Photoshop, that will open it. But, when I click on OPEN WITH for an ARW image, it doesn't show Photoshop. However, your suggestion about dragging the images from the SD card on the desktop into the Photoshop icon provides me with a solution. This is much easier and quicker than the way I was doing it.
